All the Achilles and Patroclus fans, don’t sleep on Age of Bronze by Eric Shanower! This epic labor of love is researched, written, and illustrated by a gay man who found their love inspiring.
This is the closest thing you can get to traveling back to this time period. He traveled to ACTUAL TROY to back up his research on the visuals, and he created his own storyline to remove supernatural powers and divine intervention. It draws from many, many versions of this tale, and in my opinion really humanizes everyone involved.
Here’s the lead up to one of my favorite scenes:
Tumblr media
“Yes. What are you doing out here?”
“It’s too hot to sleep. And I’ve been thinking…”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“About what?”
“Well…about leaving Skyros.”
“Leaving! Why? You can’t go!”
“Achilles, the way Lykomedes looks at me…and Deidamia, she’s so…look, you know as well as I do that no one wants me to stay.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“I do! I…”
“What?”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“I, uh…”
“WHAT?”

CW: racism, abuse
There is a petition going around to rescind the Eisner nominations for a comic made by a racist, abusive, and all-around horrible creator.
This comic should have never been published, let alone receive 4 Eisner nominations.
Please sign it and share, it only takes a minute! You don't have to be a comic creator to sign, just a comic reader.
Some context for those unfamiliar (1) (2) (3) (4) (5) (6) (7)
There's a lot more but I won't link the most disturbing stuff (please do not add it to this post if you know what I'm referring to).

Thomas Woodruff is a former SVA professor who was the head of both the illustration and cartooning programs for years. His abuse and derogatory treatment of students is well documented and extensive. He's been nominated for four Eisner awards this year, despite his outward disdain for comics and excessive efforts to push students away from the art form.
Tumblr media
Some wonderful people have started a petition to remove Woodruff and his book from the Eisner ballot, and you can sign it here.
The following is just taste of Woodruff's terrible impact on SVA students over the years, all posted online before his Eisner noms were announced...
"Had a habit of casual racist comments about East Asian students."
Tumblr media
"Enjoys making students cry, enjoys inflicting harm on students verbally."
Tumblr media
"Woodruff is so narcissistic, racist, belittling, and down right vulgar."
Tumblr media
"Head of the illustration major was Thomas Woodruff, who is the most racist."
Tumblr media
"He doesn't even bother to hide his disdain for the comics medium, he has no knowledge of it or its history."

San Diego Comic Con 2023!
We're getting ready for Comic-Con International: San Diego, the annual comic book convention and nonprofit multi-genre event is a colossal effort. The creative team at Charles M. Schulz Creative Associates works with the licensing office in NYC, Peanuts Worldwide, to bring the booth to life. The four-day event, which opens with Preview night on Wednesday, July 19th, and then runs from Thursday, July 20 through Sunday, July 23, requires hours of work to plan, prep, and stage boxes, at our office, headquartered in Santa Rosa, Calif. We filled four pallets (labeled for specific days, so the booth has inventory each morning!), then wrapped them to ship.

One of my favorite pages from TORI AMOS: LITTLE EARTHQUAKES graphic novel, nominated for two Eisner Awards for Best Anthology and Best Adaptation. It was wonderful to be working with one of the most underrated writers in comics again - Derek McCulloch on this handsome tale based on Tori's "Song for Eric".
I suppose it doesn't need saying, but I particularly love doing stories set in the 18th-19th century.

Excerpt from Eric Shanower’s epic comic series, Age of Bronze. I love how this sequence shows what Troy really looked like, and how it seemed like the center of the world in terms of trade.
Here we see two princes of Troy, Paris (impulsive long-lost prick), and Hektor (responsible eldest), discussing the latter’s mission to get the king’s sister back.
Tumblr media
“Having second thoughts?”
“Hunh?”
Tumblr media
“Hektor…no. No second thoughts at all.”
“I came to wish you good luck.”
“Thanks.”
“You aren’t overseeing the loading of your ship?”
“Aeneas is taking care of it.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
“Paris, a lot is at stake here.”
“Yeah, an aged aunt.”
“It’s more than Hesione. You’ve been in Troy for what — four months? Not very long. There are things you need to understand. Maybe I can help you see them.”
“What is there that I can’t see for myself?”
Tumblr media
“You can see most of it — right from this tower.”
Tumblr media
“Look south, Paris — to the seacoast where cookfires constantly burn. Do you know the bay there?”
“Of course, Hektor. I drive my chariot there sometimes. Ships are always beached along the shore.”
Tumblr media
“Trading ships, Paris — from the richest countries of the south — Arzawa, Cyprus, Hatti, Amuru, Assyria, Babylon, Egypt, Achaea, the islands…
“…each ship packed full of exotic goods — copper, gold, silver, oils, spices, cloth, perfumes — the wealth of the world — all for trade.
“Now look north to the straits, Paris. The water flows swift and strong, endlessly coursing through the Hellespont. A ship’s captain needs courage to steer against that current…
“…but that’s where the ships go — beyond the Hellespont — north to the Black Sea ports…from one half of the world to the other. Troy stands between.”
Tumblr media
“What you can’t see, Paris, is the key to it all — the wind. It blows from the north for weeks on end. Only when it drops does any ship dare to venture up the Hellespont.
“So the wait…and pray their gods hold back the wind. And while they wait, they pay us for permission to beach their ships here. A steady flow of the world’s goods pours into our gates.
“That wealth is the lifeblood of Troy. Do you understand, Paris?”
“Of course. I’m not a fool.”
“Good because there are many who yearn to see Troy topple. Priam knows this. Every decision he makes — every term of every treaty — every word to every foreign dignitary — every family connection he arranges — is based on keeping Troy poised at the gate between one half of the world and the other.”
(Pt 2 here)
This is from volume 1, A Thousand Ships, available from Image Comics or Hungry Tiger Press 📚

That's my shop!!
And, let me tell you, they deserve the award so much. The whole crew is amazing. The shop is wonderfully welcoming and inclusive. Katie, who owns it, has always shaped it as a community space as well as a store. They do so much community outreach and have great events, and just a wonderful vibe and a top-notch selection.
I love them, okay. I love them.

At San Diego Comic-con “Run” won the Eisner award for Best Graphic Memoir! I was able to attend the award ceremony and participate in a panel with John Lewis’s son, John Miles Lewis, thanks to Abrams Books (@abramsbooks, publisher). It was a surreal experience, and I’m so grateful to them for making it (and this book) possible.
Now that I’m home, I wanted to take the time to recognize some of the people behind Run.
Although I thanked my editor, Lauren Sankovich, at the ceremony, it bears repeating how much I appreciate her kind and firm guidance during the creation process. Run is my first published work, and the process began in 2020. Her support was invaluable during the unpredictable difficulties that year brought, and I’m so grateful to have had her by my side.
Nate Powell (Illustrator of “March”) was so generous with his time, wisdom and kickass lettering skills. Chris Ross (Designer of “Run”) took my amateur (and often smudged) pages and turned them into a beautiful, Eisner-worthy book.
Long before I was involved, the research team at Good Trouble combed through decades-old photos, police reports, and news archives for references and sources to ensure we told this story as accurately as possible. Andrew Aydin (@andrewaydin) was a great advocate for John Lewis’s vision and voice even after his passing.
Of course, none of this would have been possible without Congressman Lewis. I’m endlessly honored and humbled that he saw my art and felt he could trust me with his story.
On a personal note, I would like to thank Ashley Hymel for her support and guidance. Love and thanks to my parents as well, who nurtured my curiosity and supported my interest in art and comics.
And a special thanks to Jesse, who nursed me back to health post-knee-surgery, pep-talked me through the whole project, and so much more. 💛

I WON an Eisner
Tumblr media
This is crossposted from my newsletter
WOOO! Also the globe spins! You Died won best anthology and I'm the editor on it. So I get a this fabulous fidget spinner. I survived San Diego Comic Con. Partly that is because they did a great job with covid safety rules. We have to get a wristband showing we were vaccinated, every couple of hours there was an announcement reminded folks that masks are required, and security told folks to fix their masks if someone had it under their chin or not covering their nose. Overall things went well.
Tumblr media
July was overall super busy. Between getting ready for San Diego Comic Con and an up tick in work from Seven Seas, I didn't have a lot of time to do my comic work. This also lined up with a scene in You are the Chosen One with 9million horses and me needing to work on a short comic that is due in a couple of months. Basically the past three pages of You are the Chosen One took three times the amount of time to finish as usual because they are a big crowd scene with a parade of horses, like this one.
Tumblr media
So my buffer for You are the Chosen One is pretty much used up. The next two updates on my patreon are gonna be pencils. Then I'm gonna take a month or 2 off to get back ahead. In the meantime, I'm going to post in progress work for a comic I'm drawing and Ryan North wrote. It's for a non-fiction comic anthology called Failure to Launch. So instead of You are the Chosen One that will go up on Fridays for Patreon backers.
Anyway, this month other than working on Failure to Launch, I'm also going to Emerald City Comic Con in Seattle. I'll have my usual table near the entrance. I haven't made a little map yet but we'll be at table 206. Then after the show I am gonna dig into writing Blue Moon, my future book with Meredith McClaren. I hope your August is chiller than mine. But either way, I hope you enjoy it. Thanks for your support! Take care.
