Hot take, but having now watched several different people break down the problems in various EL James books, I am forced to at least slightly come to that heinous woman's defense to say that complaining about how her books have plot points, characters, and issues that never go anywhere or get addressed in her books... also means taking a long look at current romance novel trends in publishing because like at least half of these books also do that.
Authors put in a plot point to spur the initial plot forward and then don't want to deal with it and then just... don't. Everything that was so dire and urgent in the beginning fizzles away or is abandoned entirely or oops I guess the villain is nice now by about halfway through the books.
This is romance. Some people read dozens of them a week so that issue is not really important to them, I get that. Do I personally think it's lazy writing and that people can say it's to offer drama-free romantic experiences all they like but then can't explain why they put the drama in in the first place??? Yeah. But my opinion doesn't matter here.
Trad-pubbed, indie, self-pubbed, so many of them do this. So calling out EL James for it (especially egregious though her crimes may be), is hardly fair. This is the way it is right now. Unless she invented this trend, which I doubt, then her writing sins need to be examined within the context of current romance writing trends.

This is a cursed suggestion but have you thought about doing a season on 50 shades of grey? It is a twilight fanfic and has a book with the female character and a book with the male character just like twilight/midnight sun.
It’s super cursed but it could be fun to do like 3 or 4 episodes
(Also side not thank you for making this podcast when I’m lonely I listen to an episode and it feels like I’m hanging out with my friends and I don’t feel so lonely anymore)
G has actually read one of EL James’ twilight fanfictions (not what 50 shades was based off of, but a different one) and done some hilarious commentary on it. but as far as reading fifty shades goes?????? uhhhhhh idk about all that LMFAO. I have such low tolerance for bad smut and have no desire to read whatever 50 shades has to offer 😩 i’m SO tickled that we’re able to keep you company though 🥺 that gets me so weepy and happy all at once🤧 —shannon
you're speaking my LANGUAGE!! I did mention Grey on the podcast at least once (in, I think, Episode 0?) and it won't be a close read like season 1 of 3B1P, but I have in fact proposed an EL James one-off special episode that would put her work under a microscope like a phase of mitosis. together we can make it happen (by bullying shannon) —G
ps you can find my sporking of EL James' lost masterpiece Safe Haven here!

It’s incredibly racist to infantilise an entire ethnicity or nationality. Fuck off EL James.

Currently reading, Grey by E.L. James
Christian Grey exercises control in all things; his world is neat, disciplined, and utterly empty—until the day that Anastasia Steele falls into his office, in a tangle of shapely limbs and tumbling brown hair. He tries to forget her, but instead is swept up in a storm of emotion he cannot comprehend and cannot resist. Unlike any woman he has known before, shy, unworldly Ana seems to see right through him—past the business prodigy and the penthouse lifestyle to Christian’s cold, wounded heart.
Will being with Ana dispel the horrors of his childhood that haunt Christian every night? Or will his dark sexual desires, his compulsion to control, and the self-loathing that fills his soul drive this girl away and destroy the fragile hope she offers him?

ive just listened to the latest episode of the pod and im v excited to hear about a season two!! ive been wondering if yall were going to keep up the pod and im delighted that there are ~plans brewing~ and im super curious! ive done a read like this before and ive wanted to hear others thoughts about it for a couple years now because during the quarantine lockdowns i actually gave myself the task of reading through all of twilight and fifty shades in rotation so my Book One sequence was Life and Death, Twilight, Midnight Sun, Fifty Shades of Grey, and Grey all together and wow i sure was insane for that! anyway, just wanted to say that i was thrilled with the whole concept for this podcast when it started and yall have absolutely not disappointed!
oh my god that is the most wild undertaking ever. that makes our gimmick look like fucking child’s play 💀 watching fifty shades with G was enough for me; I’d REALLY have to be convinced to read either of those books, trust me. but I’m glad you’re enjoying the show!! we’re having a fucking blast making it!—shannon
YOU SURE WERE INSANE FOR THAT!! I admire you with my whole heart. I have read 50 Shades way back in the day and could barely get through it, much less attempt Grey (though I never say never.) I'm glad we didn't disappoint with our own slightly less wild undertaking —G

Btw, everyone has their own kink but there’s the correct way to portray them. EL James has never once portrayed a single kink correctly.
