Trick or treat!
Thank you! 👻 🍭🍬
Have a little bit of the Maglor and Luthien friendship fic!
“Why didn’t you fight them?” Maglor asked, looking at her face in the pale silvery light of the moon. “Don’t tell me you couldn’t, I know you could have.”
Her mouth curled into a wry smile that didn’t touch the sorrow in her eyes. “I was taught not to use my power that way,” she said quietly. “Against anyone who could not really fight back. It would be like. . . like unleashing my full strength against a fly. It is unfair.”
He winced at the comparison though he knew it was an apt one. “You wouldn’t have needed to hurt them,” he pressed. “I’ve seen you put creatures to sleep with your song before, that was all you would have had to do.”
Luthien bowed her head. “I could have,” she admitted.
Maglor narrowed his eyes at her. She avoided looking at him, her attention instead on the form of Huan pacing around their camp, keeping watch. There was something she was trying to hide from him, something. . .
Realization struck, and his heart sank. “You didn’t because they’re my brothers,” he guessed, and she looked up at him. The truth of it was in her face, and Maglor felt dismay and fear wash through him.
“They look like you,” she said softly, not meeting his eyes. “Similar features, same builds. Curufin has your coloring and Celegorm your quick smile. Looking at them, all I could see was you. I couldn’t hurt them.”

What is the name for a gender that fades away the more you think about it?
sounds like the inverse form of genderfade (it should be noted that genderfade is also a synonym of genderblur and it was recently recoined).

@elamarth-calmagol replied to your post “Anon hold on your ask is going thru peer review bc...”:
From what I've heard you have a pretty messed up relationship. Not to the point that i think you should cut her out of your lufe or something, but enough that you should know it's not normal. Also, like I said last time, she can ne a good person and not a good parent. You seem adament that she's a good person at heart, and I have no reason to disbelieve that. But it doesnt mean she's treating you the right way.
:( yeah people keep telling me it's messed up and i keep talking about how it's messed up but i'm like. no it's not.
kind-of-jokingness-aside, i rly appreciate outside pov here. i'm feeling very allegory of the cave about this. especially bc the part that's like. the sunlight hurts. that's me when people r nice to me.
and a big feeling right now is this sense that like. idk i'm being overdramatic feeding on attention idk.
right now my goal is to have a good relationship with my mom. for a while it was going rly well and we weren't fighting at all which was nice and i wanted to keep that and now things are tense again and i'm not rly sure how things happened? just like. whoops they were good and now they're not sorry.
i dunno, i want u to know i appreciate this reply! i know i get rambly on these bc i start thinking which makes me sad which is a cycle so b4 i get too far into it i appreciate it.
i feel kind of like. "my mom is a good mom" feels like a fact of life, the way snow is cold. it's definitional. snow is cold. it's frozen water. if it gets too warm it melts. it can't be warm.
and so if everyone is saying my mom isn't a good mom, or even that she's not doing things right/making mistakes/shouldn't do X, then i must be misrepresenting her. because she is a good mom.
i read over some of the posts i've written and they set off the "lie" button in my brain but i don't know how to make them more true. other than the fact that i use yell as a shorthand for something that doesn't rly have a name. like ok maybe i could emphasize more that the only outcome here isn't getting yelled at, i'm just fixating on that bc i really don't want it to happen. i think i've tried to be clear about that, but it's not like this is definite. she might be mad, she might not be. i don't know. i am just trying to avoid her being mad at me.
n i think this whole discussion started because i talked about how i was sending her videos she would think r funny to put her in a good mood and then there was voting and now idk where we stand. and we haven't meaningfully talked since she called me on the phone and that's a whole can of worms i'm not opening right now.
but the point is i feel like if everyone is saying all this, i must be misrepresenting her. but i don't know how to represent her better.
and i don't really know where that leaves me.

Hi there!
I'm a newbie in the tolkien works, I've finished off the hobbit and the lotr books but have no idea where to go next. I've looked at different websites about it but I haven't gotten any clear answers. There's like a million of these books and I feel so lost!
I figured that as a long time fan that you'd know the answers to this question if it's not too much of a bother.
Thanks in advance no pressure!
Augh, anon! This is one of the best things to ask of someone with a lifelong interest in this universe.
I WILL get back to you on this, but.
Was thinking (midnight brain) could we make it a group effort? It feels as though seeing different perspectives from other people in the fandom would be of help here, and since I do want this covered I'm calling on mutuals and followers in the Tolkien fandom.
Please if you deem, I do encourage people to add to this.
Let me try tagging (there are legit so many of us): @arofili @actual-bill-potts @eveningalchemist @goschatewabn @cuarthol @melestasflight @thelordofgifs @outofangband @thegreatstrongbow @potatoobsessed999 @hennethgalad @jamcake-muses @i-did-not-mean-to @glorf1ndel @z-h-i-e @verecunda @naryaflame @mirkwood-hr-department @saurons-pr-department @welcomingdisaster @hirazuki @nuredhel @effervescentdragon @searchingforserendipity25 @cilil @hhimring @chrissystriped @yuzukimist @edensrose @awesome-bluehair-universe @swanmaids @herinke @celebbun @auntieaugury @auroramama @puelhathnofury @kiatheinsomniac @eilinelsghost @asianbutnotjapanese @i-gwarth @batsyforyou @aprilertuileviresse @fishing4stars @elamarth-calmagol @zeladanial @silmarillionwritersguild @silmarillionno @solmarillion @samarqqand @sallysavestheday+ anyone else and ALL the Tolkien visual artists who see this and I forgot to mention (love you all, so many) if you have the inclination to add your journey/experience/recommendations? Tolkien OC Week
A fandom event for OCs and underdeveloped characters in Tolkien's world!
This event celebrates both characters of Tolkien's world and our own characters that need more love, by creating and reblogging all kind of fanworks, like fanfiction, fanart, fanvideos, fancrafts, headcanons, playlists, edits, moodboards etc.
The event is modded by @yellow-faerie, @elamarth-calmagol and @stormxpadme and will take place between 21st August - 27th August 2023 for the third year running.
NSFW text entries are allowed and we’ll tag them accordingly when we reblog them, but please put them behind a “read more”.
We'll also be tracking the tag #tolkienocweek during this week!
*******************************************
*******************************************
Event schedule for 2023:
Day 1 (21st August): Family members
Tolkien often neglects to mention the family members of major characters: for example, leaving both Celebrimbor and Fili and Kili with only one named parent. In others cases, such as Bilbo's family tree, he gives a name and nothing else. Share a character who fills in a gap in a family tree, or create a speculative family member, such as siblings for Legolas.
Day 2 (22nd August): The Bad Guys
Share an OC who belongs to the wrong side of the story, whether they're knowingly evil, misguided, or just doing their job. Maybe they're an orc or a balrog, an unrepentant kinslayer, a Southron or Easterling soldier, or one of the hobbits who worked with Saruman in the Shire. Explore their life and point of view and why they went down the path they did.
Day 3 (23rd August): Diversity
Share an OC who adds diversity to Tolkien’s world, whether it is their race, gender, disability, neurodiversity, sexual orientation, or another characteristic.
Day 4 (24th August): Forgotten Characters
As Tolkien created his stories, he abandoned some characters, such as Eriol the Mariner, and changed major characteristics of others, such as the idea that Erestor was a half-elven relative of Elrond. Other characters, such as the Dunedain chieftains fostered by Elrond before Aragorn, are forgotten by the fandom. Create a fanwork focusing on one of these forgotten characters or characterizations.
Day 5 (25th August): Shipping
Share an OC that you ship with a canon character. It could be a marriage, queerplatonic relationship, or one-night stand, canon compliant or AU, or any other sort of ship you want!
Day 6 (26th August): Alternate Universes
Share an OC who couldn’t be part of the canonical story, such as Boromir's child in an "everyone lives" scenario, a roommate or professor in a college AU, or a dimension-hopping "tenth walker".
Day 7 (27th August): Freeform
Did you have someone who doesn’t fit any prompts, or too many characters for one of them? Today, share any OC that you want.
*******************************************
*******************************************
Since we want to celebrate creations about neglected characters all year long, the mods will occasionally reblog posts and fancreations about OCs and underdeveloped characters. If you would like to see your post on our blog, you're very welcome to tag tolkienocweek. Since tumblr's tagging system is often being faulty, don't hesitate to message us, too!
We are looking forward to see and share all the awesome work you come up with!

Unsure if you already have enough disability pride asks but since Evi showed me LOTR I wanted to add mine to the mix 💕 No worries if you don't get to finishing it!
I was thinking HOH Galadriel, perhaps art of her signing! I read it in a fic I can't remember the name of 💙
Tumblr media
[ID: @elamarth-calmagol asked: I don't know if you're still doing disability asks, but could you draw some elves conversing in sign language? I'm feeling Elrond and Celebrian, where Celebrian is deaf and Elrond learned the language to talk to her, but anyone is fine if that doesn't fit your headcanons.]
Thank you both for sending prompts! Since they were similar/easily connected, I decided to make it a two-parter. Galadriel teaching little Celebrían how to sign "silver" and Celebrían in turn teach little Arwen (and Elrond, but Elrond already signs fluently at this point) how to sign "star". Both signs are based on the French Sign Language ones, since that's the one I know a little of.
Tumblr media
[ID: digital pencil sketch of Galadriel and little Celebrían sitting side by side on a bench. Galadriel is doing a sign with her hands in fists with the thumbs out, and Celebrían is imitating her, her tongue pocking out. The word "silver" is written underneath.]
Tumblr media
[ID: Digital sketch of Elrond and Celebrían sitting cross-legged across from each other, with little Arwen in Elrond's lap. Celebrían, seen from the back, is doing a sign by crossing the index and pointer fingers of both hands. Arwen is imitating her, while Elrond is watching. The word "star" is written underneath.]
In both cases, it's only a still of a moving sign, and the kids aren't signing very accurately, this isn't meant to teach you any sign language.

Share the first line of ten of your most recent fanfics and then tag ten people.
Don't have ten? Not to worry, just share what you have.
I was tagged by two super authors, @spiced-wine-fic and @sallysavestheday Thank you!
1. “Is this it?” Aegnor asked with an air of excitement.
2. Gellalaer emptied the contents of a small drawstring bag onto her workbench. Gems of all colors and sizes tumbled onto the scrap of velvet she had placed there.
3. “I think right here will do,” said Feanor, shrugging off his backpack and un-stoppering the lid to his water skin.
4. A cool wind rushed into the King’s pavilion, rustling papers and bringing with it the scent of salt and sea as the flaps were lifted by a guard and a figure entered.
5. Idhren placed a decorative dish filled with sumptuous roasted vegetables drizzling with honey on the dining table. She stepped back to run an appraising eye over the feast she had laid out for Prince Ereinion’s homecoming.
6. The day was warm and a little on the muggy side. It was one of the first of a three month campaign that would see Tirion swelter.
7. There was a chill to the brisk sea breeze that gusted in off the Belegaer, playfully lifting Eärwen’s silver hair and blowing it across her face.
8. The wind struck him in the face, leaving a sting not with its chill but with its ferocity and strength as he strode the cliffs above the grinding ice next to his brother-in-law Fingolfin.
9. Music and laughter wafted down the path towards Celebrimbor. It was such a welcome sound and took him back to happier times in Himlad.
10. “One, two, three…,” Fëanor counted. Then he cursed, realising one of his sons was missing. He sighed heavily, running a hand down his face in utter frustration.
Tagging. @grundyscribbling @idrilsscribe @herinke9 @wren-of-the-woods @morgulscribe @starspray @elamarth-calmagol @independence1776 @unnamedelement @antares0606
Phew!
I know I go overboard on posting just one sentence, but I can't help myself. I feel some of them need a bit of context.

@elamarth-calmagol
SO this was all anyone could talk about a few months ago. And the show runners have addressed the questions a few times with vague discussions of ‘wanting to try something new, not wanting to repeat Peter Jackson’ etc etc (for the elf hair in any case). But yeah! It all feels a little gender essentialist, although Gil Galad does have very long hair himself, which is quite funny honestly it’s almost like he’s made a law ONLY the king can have long hair. And Disa DOES have a soft little patch of a beard, but it’s nothing like the luxurious lady beard any of us wanted.
In essence I assume it was partly gender essentialist, partly making it far easier to do all the extra’s hair, partly wanting to visually define itself away from Jackson’s films. It’s just not something I’m particularly worried about and it’s not a massive issue enough for me to stop being excited about the show. Especially because Disa is gorgeous anyway and is just so broad and elegant and is allowed so much personality and importance in this show, when dwarf women have never been allowed anything like it ever before (except in LOTRO lmao). She is still allowed to be thick and sturdy and dwarvish and that’s enough for me.

@elamarth-calmagol - creating a new post because the original one (on Vilya and the use of the Three during the Second Age) was getting long! But I wanted to respond; hope you don’t mind!
I fundamentally disagree with throwing out the History of Galadriel and Celeborn as not canon because it's contradictory, not unless you’re going to throw out the entirety of HoME, NoME, etc and only used the Silmarillion itself (plus LotR and the 2nd ed Hobbit) - which I actually think is a very valid way of approaching the texts, though not my own nor that of anyone I’ve seen. All of the sources are contradictory, and sources in HoME contradict LotR and the Silm too (crispy Amrod, for example, which is pretty widely adopted). And the trouble of throwing out the History of Galadriel and Celeborn in particular is that it gets rid of the major source on Eregion, Lothlórien, the Three, and Galadriel. Is it contradictory? Yes, and that’s part of the point, Christopher showing how his father’s conception of Galadriel changed over time. But you’re not left with much without it (including Celebrimborbanner! And Sauron’s black rage! I have otp needs here lol.)
As for the Elven use of the Three, the Silmarillion states that they weren’t used openly, which doesn’t preclude some secret use, whatever that might be:
But Sauron could not discover [the Three], for they were given into the hands of the Wise, who concealed them and never again used them openly while Sauron kept the Ruling Ring.
As for who possessed Vilya in the Second Age, as far as I can tell most of the knowledge we have on that comes from UT as well, which at one point states that Elrond came into possession of it in the middle of the Second Age (seemingly between SA 1701 and 1800):
At this time the first Council was held, and it was there determined that an Elvish stronghold in the east of Eriador should be maintained at Imladris rather than in Eregion. At that time also Gil-galad gave Vilya, the Blue Ring, to Elrond, and appointed him to be his vice-regent in Eriador; but the Red Ring he kept, until he gave it to Círdan when he set out from Lindon in the days of the Last Alliance.
Appendix B states that Gil-Galad gave Vilya to Elrond, in a way that suggests that Gil-Galad kept Vilya till the end (with Círdan receiving it earlier rather than just before the Last Alliance - there’s also the contradiction there of Círdan in the Silm being present when Isildur refuses to destroy the One). So there’s the contradiction between UT and the Appendices.
But at the end it became known that they had been held at first the the three greatest of the Eldar: Gil-galad, Galadriel and Círdan. Gil-galad before he died gave his ring to Elrond.
At any rate, I think the sources are contradictory enough that someone writing fic is more than fine and entirely defensible to write Elrond using Vilya secretly at some point in the Second Age.
All thanks to @aipilosse for pulling the quotes <3

This is probably a weird one, but last night I came up with a xenogender in a dream? I don't know if it already exists or if I genuinely came up with it on my own. Also I swear I'd worded it better in my dream. But it's puzzlegender, like jigsaw puzzles, and it's "a gender that seems chaotic and messy at first, but becomes cohesive when you work on it or think about it for a while." Which sounds kind of cool to me.
nice. I could think of the original meaning of audiogender, but nothing specifically like this.

Getting to know you
Rule: tag 9 people you want to know better.
I was tagged by @keiliss, who I probably won't surprise.
Three ships:
Erestor/Glorfindel - obviously, as I write them more than anyone.
Glorfindel/Gil-galad - rare pair that I wish was not so rare.
Arthur/Eames - inception fandom ate my brain for a bit.
First-ever ship: Probably Han Solo/Princess Leia, followed by Mulder/Scully.
Last song: First Aid Kit - Fireworks
Last film: The Ten Commandments - drama, religion, politics, epic sense of scale. It was a formative influence on my reading/watching taste and I revisit it yearly.
Currently reading: Listening to the audiobooks The Third Reich in Power by Richard Evans and a Pan's Labyrinth novelization by Guillermo del Toro and Cornelia Funke and reading Tuyo by Rachel Neumeier. I rotate through them as the mood strikes.
Currently consuming: Popcorn and Friday Night Lights
Tagging @ilye-elf, @bettsfic, @giraffeter, and @elamarth-calmagol, if you'd like!
