HELLO!
(Yes, this is me as Sarah Winchester for Halloween. Also, yes, this is pretty much my general wardrobe give or take a lace layer. Yes, I wrote a long chapter in this book about Sarah Winchester because I really love her and find her to be fundamentally misunderstood.)
I just wanted to drop by and say it's still Women's History Month and it's still a GREAT time to read about historical women and how their stories resonate with us today. BONUS: you can do this through ghost lore! Here's how!
A HAUNTED HISTORY OF INVISIBLE WOMEN: TRUE STORIES OF AMERICA'S GHOSTS examines women's history by using ghost stories; unpacking how we talk about women, alive and dead. Available wherever books are sold, in paperback, audio and digital! Retailer links here!
Word-of-mouth is so important for books like ours, so if this book interests you, could you please share? Thanks so much and Happy Haunting!

It occurred to me that I hadn't put up my deathhawk in months, and one has to stay in practice. And as long as I was at it, I thought I'd try doing my eye makeup differently. My hands shake a bit, because I'm almost 65 years old. Strange expressions because I'm trying to look at my phone screen while taking the pic.

I was loosely basing the eye makeup on insta's @coffin.goblin

From One Goth to Another...
You don’t have to wear all black all the time! Black is obviously the most important color, but if you want to mix in other colors that you like into your wardrobe, there is nothing wrong with that at all. I personally like mixing black with dark shades of red and burgundy/maroon shades. Occasionally I mix in black with white too just because I like the contrast. Play around with colors and see what looks best to your eyes.
Heavy makeup is not a necessity. Not everybody has the time, energy, patience, or resources to look like a variation of Morticia Addams or Elvira every day of their lives. Some goths don’t even like that look at all. If you’re not that keen on makeup or you prefer a more simplistic makeup style, you’re still goth.
You do not need pale skin to be goth. I repeat - YOU DO NOT NEED PALE SKIN. If anybody tells you this, they are dead wrong and also probably racist. The great thing about wearing black is that black looks great on any skin tone. Goth is inclusive to people who are the palest shade of peach and the darkest shade of brown and every other shade of skin in-between.
If you’re not into TradGoth styles or TradGoth music, that’s fine. No really, it’s fine! I think it’s important to educate yourself on the origins of goth and to be familiar with the OG scene, but if you’re not into backcombed hair or Bauhaus, that is 100% okay. Sadly a lot of TradGoths are snobbish about this kind of thing too, but their snobbery shouldn’t discourage you. Like whatever aspects of goth culture you want and do your own thing.
Don’t let your aesthetic drain your bank account. Buying a ton of expensive accessories, clothing, furniture, and household items that match your goth aesthetic is a bit impractical, especially if you’re on a budget. Instead, hit up some local thrift stores - you’ll be amazed at how much goth-style clothing can be found second-hand. About 80% of my wardrobe comes from thrift stores, plus I’ve found candelabras and decorative art with dark themes, too.
Additionally, don’t let your aesthetic compromise your professional life. If you have a job or career that requires you to look “normal” from 9 - 5, there is no shame in that. We all have to tone ourselves down a bit in a professional setting, because putting food on the table is a bit more important than being mysterious and spooky. If you can, find ways to subtly express your goth style in the workplace without getting yourself in trouble with Human Resources.
Don’t have an “us vs. them” attitude. This is a big mistake that a lot of mall-goths/baby bats make - thinking that everyone who isn’t goth is a “prep” or “the enemy”, even if they don’t outwardly say it. Having a diverse group of friends is SO important. Don’t shut somebody out just because they’re a part of a different scene. Most of my closest friends aren’t goth, but we get along great just the same. Friendship is about loyalty and being there for each other, not about outward appearance.
You don’t have to practice witchcraft to be goth. I think this is another huge misconception about goth culture, that “goth” equals “occultist”. Although there does seem to be some considerable overlap, not every goth is a witch, and not every witch is goth. If you’re a Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, Sikh, Pagan, Atheist, Flying Spaghetti Monster adherent, whatever - you can still be goth. Goth is a stylistic culture, not a dogmatic one.
If there are days when you’re like “fuck it” and you want a break from being goth, take that break. Have mousy hair and wear sweatpants for a day. Wear something pink if you want. Put on some really embarrassing pop ballads from the late ‘90s and belt your heart out. Watch some terrible romantic comedies. Feel good about yourself knowing that you’re goth when and if you want to be, and that you’re not playing a character for anyone, including yourself.

My 90s/Y2K photos
It's kinda amusing to me that 90s and Y2K goth has become a little subgenre all of its own, because that was my era.
However, it also makes me think that there may be people out there who would enjoy seeing my old photos from this time. All these were taken in late 2000 or early 2001 when I would have been 18/19. Faces of my friends obscured since I don't know whether they'd want them shared!
Poor quality due to these being photos of physical photos originally taken with a film camera. We couldn't do millions of digital selfies to get ones we liked at that time, just had to hope for the best and wait until your film was developed...
I have no objection to these being shared, but please reblog, don't repost 😉

And here's the collaged album I keep them in, also an authentic relic from that time. Not sure what Darth Vader is doing on there. Or Cristina Scabbia come to that, I really dislike Lacuna Coil!

One of the most important things I've learned in carving my own path and practice in the craft, is to follow your own path. If you identify with more main stream crafts and rather not stray from the herd, that is totally vailed. However, if you don't identify with anything in the mainstream and find it hard to connect to your craft, don't be afraid to carve your own.
I didn't identify with most wiccan teachings and that's ok. I did a ton of research and stumbled upon "The Crooked Path" by Kelden and it helped open up a whole new concept to me that I've been searching for, for over a decade. I finally realized that I don't have to follow everyone else and their ethics. I can follow my own and not care about what anyone else says.
I still very much am learning what my true path is but I'm loving the journey. I've also wanted to sink my teeth in to tumblr for years but couldn't figure out what I wanted my blog to be for the longest time. This isn't my first blog but this is the first one I've been truly excited about. Not only is being a witch my spirituality and life style but its also my main autistic special interest. I know this blog will stick. I could talk about the craft for hours. With that being said, just because I don't practice wicca, doesn't mean I wont discuss it or know anything about it. If their are witchlings or baby witches (what ever term you prefer) I'll be happy to answer any questions to the best of my ability. Stay vvitchy my friends.

Gothic and Goth are the same.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Photos belong to Jet on Flickr.
“It wasn't popular and it didn't have a name yet. We used to call it Gloom and Doom right at the beginning. Then it germinated into Deathrock, which were live band we used to go see. Then it morphed into Gothic. You weren't a Goth. You were Gothic. That's the way the term was used. There was no "Goth" for a while. That was a later term” — Jwlhyfer de Winter on YouTube
There's some fairly popular misinformation going around the internet that Gothic and Goth are different. Folks are saying that Gothic only refers to the literature and art while Goth refers only to the music. Historically, this is very wrong.
The word Gothic was used first. Later on it was shortened to Goth. Therefore, they are the same thing. As proof, take a look at the club flyers posted above and note how they all use the word Gothic NOT Goth.
“We'd actually described Join Hands as "gothic" at the time of its release, but journalists hadn't picked up on it. Certainly, at that time we were reading a lot of Edgar Allan Poe and writers like that. A song like "Premature Burial" from that album is certainly gothic in its proper sense.” — Steve Severin; Paytress, M. (2003). Siouxsie & the Banshees : the authorised biography. Sanctuary.
Also note that Siouxsie and the Banshees labeled themselves Gothic due to their huge love for Edgar Allan Poe (circa 1979 when Join Hands was released). So, the truth is, Gothic applies to literature, art, as well as music (and more). In which, this term was later shortened to Goth.

I see Goth is trending on this here site right now so I'm just going to take this opportunity to say HELLO from one of your friendly neighborhood Elder Goths (I'm 44). HI FOLKS! I'm a writer, actress and ghost tour guide! I welcome all Goth styles, shapes and sizes, Goth does NOT have to be expensive (just look for black things at thrift stores & on clearance racks like I do then mix/match), I welcome all baby bats and new Goths into our collective black-clad fold, we love you! And always remember: punch Nazis. It was a rule of all my favorite Goth clubs then and now.
(Yes, I am standing at the staircase of The Stanley Hotel, inspiration for The Shining, thank you for noticing!)
If you like my clothes, you'll like my books, I dress like I write!
More about my books here!
My shop, Torch & Arrow, here!
More about my latest non-fiction about the lives and deaths of ghostly women, A HAUNTED HISTORY OF INVISIBLE WOMEN: TRUE STORIES OF AMERICA'S GHOSTS here!

I am so out of practice! I hadn't put my deathhawk up since early November, and it shows. It's so uneven, and I did a lousy job in back. Oh, well, it's still fun. And I need to give up on trying to grow out the back corner. I couldn't get the short hairs to stay up.
