Note: I super don't like the framing of this headline. "Here's why it matters" idk it's almost like there's an entire country's worth of people who get to keep their democracy! Clearly! But there are few good articles on this in English, so we're going with this one anyway.

2024 is the biggest global election year in history and the future of democracy is on every ballot. But amid an international backsliding in democratic norms, including in countries with a longer history of democracy like India, Senegal’s election last week was a major win for democracy. It’s also an indication that a new political class is coming of age in Africa, exemplified by Senegal’s new 44-year-old president, Bassirou Diomaye Faye.

The West African nation managed to pull off a free and fair election on March 24 despite significant obstacles, including efforts by former President Macky Sall to delay the elections and imprison or disqualify opposition candidates. Add those challenges to the fact that many neighboring countries in West Africa — most prominently Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger, but other nations across the region too — have been repeatedly undermined by military coups since 2020.

Sall had been in power since 2012, serving two terms. He declined to seek a third term following years of speculation that he would do so despite a constitutional two-term limit. But he attempted to extend his term, announcing in February that elections (originally to be held that month) would be pushed off until the end of the year in defiance of the electoral schedule.

Sall’s allies in the National Assembly approved the measure, but only after security forces removed opposition politicians, who vociferously protested the delay. Senegalese society came out in droves to protest Sall’s attempted self-coup, and the Constitutional Council ruled in late February that Sall’s attempt to stay in power could not stand.

That itself was a win for democracy. Still, opposition candidates, including Faye, though legally able to run, remained imprisoned until just days before the election — while others were barred from running at all. The future of Senegal’s democracy seemed uncertain at best.

Cut to Tuesday [April 2, 2024], when Sall stepped down and handed power to Faye, a former tax examiner who won on a campaign of combating corruption, as well as greater sovereignty and economic opportunity for the Senegalese. And it was young voters who carried Faye to victory...

“This election showed the resilience of the democracy in Senegal that resisted the shock of an unexpected postponement,” Adele Ravidà, Senegal country director at the lnternational Foundation for Electoral Systems, told Vox via email. “... after a couple of years of unprecedented episodes of violence [the Senegalese people] turned the page smoothly, allowing a peaceful transfer of power.”

And though Faye’s aims won’t be easy to achieve, his win can tell us not only about how Senegal managed to establish its young democracy, but also about the positive trend of democratic entrenchment and international cooperation in African nations, and the power of young Africans...

Senegal and Democracy in Africa

Since it gained independence from France in 1960, Senegal has never had a coup — military or civilian. Increasingly strong and competitive democracy has been the norm for Senegal, and the country’s civil society went out in great force over the past three years of Sall’s term to enforce those norms.

“I think that it is really the victory of the democratic institutions — the government, but also civil society organization,” Sany said. “They were mobilized, from the unions, teacher unions, workers, NGOs. The civil society in Senegal is one of the most experienced, well-organized democratic institutions on the continent.” Senegalese civil society also pushed back against former President Abdoulaye Wade’s attempt to cling to power back in 2012, and the Senegalese people voted him out...

Faye will still have his work cut out for him accomplishing the goals he campaigned on, including economic prosperity, transparency, food security, increased sovereignty, and the strengthening of democratic institutions. This will be important, especially for Senegal’s young people, who are at the forefront of another major trend.

Young Africans will play an increasingly key role in the coming decades, both on the continent and on the global stage; Africa’s youth population (people aged 15 to 24) will make up approximately 35 percent of the world’s youth population by 2050, and Africa’s population is expected to grow from 1.5 billion to 2.5 billion during that time. In Senegal, people aged 10 to 24 make up 32 percent of the population, according to the UN.

“These young people have connected to the rest of the world,” Sany said. “They see what’s happening. They are interested. They are smart. They are more educated.” And they have high expectations not only for their economic future but also for their civil rights and autonomy.

The reality of government is always different from the promise of campaigning, but Faye’s election is part of a promising trend of democratic entrenchment in Africa, exemplified by successful transitions of power in Nigeria, Liberia, and Sierra Leone over the past year. To be sure, those elections were not without challenges, but on the whole, they provide an important counterweight to democratic backsliding.

Senegalese people, especially the younger generation, have high expectations for what democracy can and should deliver for them. It’s up to Faye and his government to follow."

Code Green

A game for 3–7 players, about being where you're not supposed to be.

Last night, you were suspended in a tube of brightly coloured goo in an underground research facility, operated by an organisation whose three-letter initialism's meaning is strictly need-to-know. This morning, someone noticed your tube was empty. Nobody has determined how that happened yet, and you're not inclined to stick around until they figure it out!

Or, in other words, it's been nearly a whole week since I got that massive revision to Space Gerbils out the door, and apparently my brain has decided that's enough of a break. This thing was written start to finish in under 12 hours, so let the circumstances of its authorship guide your expectations. Special thanks go once again to Caro Asercion, whose micro-RPG Dwindle introduced me to the design space I'm fucking around with here. Go buy their stuff.

Anyway:

What You'll Need

Code Green is a tabletop RPG for one game moderator (GM) and up to six players. Each player will need a copy of the Profile Grid, below, as well as three tokens of some sort: dice, coins, beads, etc. You'll also need at least five six-sided dice (for the whole group, not per player, though it's fine if each player has their own set). If you're using dice for tokens, it's recommended that the dice you plan to roll be visually distinguishable in case they land on someone's Profile Grid.

Rolling Dice

There are two ways you'll be asked to roll dice in this game: rolling d66, and rolling a dice pool.

To roll d66, roll a six-side die twice, reading the first roll as the "tens" place and the second roll as the "ones" place, yielding a number in the range from 11 to 66. For example, if you rolled a 3 and then a 5, your result is 35. You may also be asked to flip a d66 roll; to do this, take your result and swap the digits without re-rolling. In the preceding example, if you flipped your roll of 35, your new result would be 53.

To roll a dice pool, pick up the indicated number of six-side dice, roll them, and take the highest individual result. Duplicates have no special significance. For example, if you rolled a pool of three dice and got a 2, a 4, and a 4, your result would be 4. If you would ever roll a pool of zero or fewer dice, roll two dice and take the lowest instead.

Character Creation

Each player should create their own character. There are three things about your character which are always true:

You are newly born into the world. You may know things about the world (e.g., from your programming, having read them on a computer terminal, etc.), but you haven't experienced them.

You are implausibly good at remaining inconspicuous; unless you're deliberately drawing attention or doing something which requires a dice roll, humans will almost always fail to spot you.

You are not human. You can decide what that means.

To find out what else is true about your character, roll or choose three times from the Form table, and three times from the Function table, placing your results into the correspondingly labelled slots on the Profile Grid, below, in any order you please. Your three results from each table should be different; if you elected to roll and get the same entry multiple times, flip your result, and re-roll if it's still a duplicate.

Think about what your three Form traits and three Function traits imply about your character's physical makeup, but don't set anything in stone just yet – you'll see why not in a moment.

Finally, roll a six-sided die five times, and record the results in the order in which they're received. The resulting five-digit number is the only name your character has when play begins.

Playing the Game

Play proceeds in a series of scenes. In each scene, the GM will set the stage: a challenge to overcome, a peril to escape, a mystery to investigate, etc. Given the nature of your characters, most things will be mysteries to you!

Initial Token Placement

Once the stage has been set, place each of your three tokens on a different square on your Profile Grid. If you have no preference, you can roll d66 for each token and place it in the square whose marked numeric range contains the number you rolled, flipping or re-rolling your result if you get a square which already contains a token. The placement of these tokens represents your initial state when the scene opens. Depending on the nature of your character, this may be reflected by a shifting of internal focus, or by a physical transformation.

Participation

To participate in the scene, simply tell the GM what your character does; the GM will describe how the world responds, and ask what you do next. Whenever you wish – or are forced – to do something more than lurk and observe, you are obliged to make a test.

Making Tests

To make a test, first choose a pair of traits – one Form trait, and one Function trait – with which to face the challenge. For example, if your Form traits are Legs, Tail and Teeth, and your Function traits are Cryptic, Invulnerable and Phasing, you might test your Invulnerable Legs against the trouble at hand.

Next, count the number of tokens present in the rows extending from each of the chosen traits. The illustration below shows which squares would be consulted in the preceding example:

Next, roll a dice pool containing a number of dice equal to the number of tokens present on squares extending from the chosen traits. Do not count a token twice if it's on the square where the two traits intersect (e.g., the green square in the illustration above). In the event that no tokens fall on squares extending from appropriate traits, remember that you are allowed to roll a pool of zero dice by rolling two dice and taking the lowest rather than the highest.

Finally, compare your result to the following table:

1–3. Less than human. Whatever you'd intended to try still happens, but it cannot overcome human opposition (or adversity which would challenge a typical human), and any lasting effects are transitory and easily explained away. 4–5. Mostly human. Your effort can contend with human opposition (or circumstances which would challenge a competent human), and its lasting effects make it obvious that someone (or something) has been interfering with matters. 6. More than human. Your effort easily brushes aside any human opposition, and its lasting effects are impossible to rationalise as anything other than the intervention of inhuman forces.

Without Applicable Traits

In the event that you're forced to make a test and no possible pairing of your traits is applicable, you don't get to roll anything, not even with a pool of zero dice; simply resolve the outcome as though you'd rolled a result of 1–3. Other characters may attempt to preserve you from this fate by assisting you, in which case you roll one die per assisting friend; see below for more details.

Assistance

If you wish to assist another character in making a test, consult your own Profile Grid, considering only those squares which contain tokens. Only the specific pairs of traits represented by the squares on which your tokens fall are eligible for assistance; for example, if one of your tokens falls on the intersection of Cryptic and Teeth, you may assist with Cryptic Teeth, but not any other pair of traits involving Cryptic or Teeth unless those squares also have tokens on them.

If you're able to identify an eligible pair of traits that seems applicable to the test at hand, explain how you're using it to help, and hand the player making the test one extra die. Any number of characters may assist on a given test.

Providing assistance neither requires nor permits your character to adapt (see below) – it needs to be your own test for that!

Adapting

After resolving a test, your character adapts, shifting focus or form to reflect what they've learned. Take one token of your choice from your character sheet, and move it to a different square which doesn't already contain one. You can move any token you wish, but it must end up on a different square than the one it started on unless no valid destinations are available. Adapting is not optional, and must be carried out after every test.

Suffering Strain

If whatever you're making a test against is particularly strenuous or dangerous, you might suffer strain as a consequence. Strain will often be incurred on a result of 1–3, and rarely on a result of 4–5; only the most foolhardy efforts will incur strain even on a result of 6!

To incur strain, roll d66, and place a small X on the square on your Profile Grid whose indicated numeric range contains the number you rolled. If there's a token on that square, immediately move it to an empty square of your choice, unless fewer than three unmarked squares now remain; in that case, simply remove the token entirely.

For the remainder of the scene, tokens may not be moved to any marked square. In addition, if you suffer further strain, and the square indicated by your d66 roll is already marked, your character is incapacitated, and may not participate in tests at all until they recover.

All strain is cleared – and any discarded tokens restored – at the end of each scene. Incapacitated characters also recover at this time.

WalterBob wasnt introduced until Day 80

Wilbur was gone for 171 days before his brief return; almost making Tallulah gone for half the time her dad was gone

Also:

The OG eggs have spent 34% of their time away

Tallulah has spent 36% of her time away

Richas has spent 39% of his time away

Pomme has spent 43% of her time away

Bonus:

The Eggs disappeared on September 7th so the OG eggs and Richas spent 2 birthdays away from their parents and Tallulah and Pomme spent 3 birthdays away from their parents

Well, that's the first time I've seen a sign that said 'Vote YES on Issue 1."

Issue 1 is a special statewide Ohio election which will decide whether or not new laws need 60% of the vote to pass, as opposed to 50% of the vote. But also new petitions would require signatures from all 88 counties instead of the current 44.

This has the potential to block a LOT of new laws on technicalities.

A number of civil rights and reproductive rights are trying to make it through Ohio legislature and this would prevent them from moving forward. And that is exactly what this special election is about- they want to stall progress as much as possible.

Specifically, they're looking to prevent abortion access from being considered a constitutional right for Ohio. That's what voting for this bill would accomplish, primarily.

Sorry, didn't mean to get political words all over your dash today. But it was kind of a surprise to see that sign when a lot of the area is No-heavy.

Anyway, if you can vote in Ohio- voting No on August 8th would prevent a lot of problems.

What If: Captain America Were Revived Today? #44 (April 1983) by Peter B. Gillis and Sal Buscema; Original Image by John Romita Sr.

In this What If? Marvel tale, Captain America is unfrozen in 1983 rather than the 1960s. Without the leadership of Steve Rogers, The Avengers disband. Meanwhile, a Captain America imposter, who calls himself a "real American," has decided to use his newfound influential media status to publicly support a National Identity Card to "deal with illegal aliens,” to suggest that members of civil rights groups "ought to think seriously as to whether or not their actions contribute to the strengthening of communist enemies," and declare that if those groups tear the country apart with protests, martial law is justified "for the peace to find a solution.”

Neighborhoods with large black populations (e.g., Harlem) are walled off and forced into poverty, and one character even mentions that Jewish people are being “put back into camps.” The right-wing politicians make sure that things like this aren’t shown on television, keeping the majority of the American public ignorant of the horrors committed with their indifferent support. The public are simultaneously told that with some sacrifices, America can be free once again. The fake Captain America confronts a group of peaceful protestors, and he is shot by a sniper (in what reads like an inside job), allowing the police to have “reason” to attack the protestors. The imposter does not die and instead uses the attack to provide more reason for the violent crackdown against protesting groups.

When the true Captain America is unfrozen, he is horrified to see what America has become, especially with his emblem stamped all over it. He immediately seeks out the resistance forces (who clearly represent the Black Panther Party) and joins their cause, stating that "the wrongs [he's] seen will take much more than one man to right -- but [he's] got a name to clear, a costume to unsoil-- and a country to die for!!"

By the time Steve joins them, the resistance only has one chance left to stop the American downfall: a political convention where the "America First" party will be able to secure its support to sweep the national elections and allow them "to return America to the pure and great nation [the] forefathers envisioned."

The resistance strikes just as the convention begins. The Captain America imposter is no match in a fight against the true Captain America -- especially against a Steve Rogers who's fucking pissed. ("Get up so I can knock you down!!")

With the imposter knocked unconscious, Captain America addresses the convention crowd, warning that an America that does not represent all its people does not deserve to exist at all; that liberty can be "as easily snuffed out [in America] as in Nazi Germany" and "as a people, we are no different from them."

The crowd realizes that the man speaking before them is the true Captain America and cheers. Captain America holds his hand up and silences them, stating that he will not allow them the chance to simply replace one idol with another. He alone can’t undo the horrible damage, and he pleads that there’s still a chance for the people to “find America once again.”

Fascism doesn’t change its tune, just its singers.

since it went up again this level, here's a breakdown of Orym's passive perception and where it could go from here

it's currently 31, which comes from:

10 (Base)

+ 3 (Wisdom stat)

+ 4 (Proficiency)

+ 4 (Expertise, from the Skill Expert feat)

+ 5 (Observant feat)

+ 5 (Advantage, granted by Sentinel Shield)

depending on what level the campaign goes to, we'll see more increases from proficiency bonus: 33 (13th level) or 35 (17th level). Liam could also elect to increase his WIS score for some more small bonuses, though there's probably better choices on his level ups, like increased CON and/or more feats. the theoretical maximum, if he does increase his WIS and does hit 17th level, is 37.

which is pretty bonkers, by the way - for a point of comparison, if Vax were trying to stealth past someone with a 37 passive perception, he would have to crit on a stealth check just to tie them. even right now, with 31 passive perception, Vax could try to tiptoe past Orym while invisible and Orym would still have about a 50% chance of noticing him. incredible.

(side note: technically speaking, the maximum for passive perception is actually a bit higher - 44, I think - but that requires a WIS score higher than 20 and an Ioun Stone of Mastery, neither of which we are likely to see in this campaign)

Badboyhalo QSMP Lore Masterpost

Disclaimer: Heavily used q!Bad’s wikipage to make this, so I recommend reading through it if you're short on time! Not included is his backstory lore which I’ve summed up here.

Most of Bad's streams are 6-8 hours long, so I've tried my best to include timestamps. Heavy lore usually occurs early in, but Bad is in-character 90% of the time, so many of his character developments happen naturally and slowly.

He also has these vods archived on Twitch, so just head over to his channel if you prefer to watch there.

Finding the Ticket

☆ First Day: The first day of the QSMP

☆ ☆ Adoption Day: The first day of the egg event, in which Bad adopts Dapper. This also is the start to his daily QSMP streams.

Save the Baby Quest // JuanaFlippa Trial:

After JuanaFlippa dies, Slime goes on a rampage and tries to kill Dapper. You can watch the murder attempt on this vod from 3:56:00 and onwards.

The next day, the eggs are kidnapped. Bad tries to rescue Dapper and is unsuccessful because the server is down, so not linking the vod.

Finally on the day of the trial, Bad tries to save Dapper again and is successful. Then, he goes to represent Slime at the trial as one of his many lawyers.

☆ First Encounter with Code: Around two hours in, Bad and Foolish talk with Luzu and see his supercomputer. He drops lore and the Code attacks Bad for the first time.

Second Encounter with Code: Bad, Foolish, and Maxo go adventuring and are attacked by the Code multiple times. Quackity discusses his nightmare with Bad at 4:30:00. This is also the start of Theory Bros, and Bad and Maxo’s theories.

☆ ☆ Dapper’s Nightmare: Dungeon raid starts around 7 hours in. Dapper’s first death.

Brazilians Join // Second Egg Kidnapping: The eggs are kidnapped the day the Brazilians join. Bad goes to save Dapper at 1:55:00.

☆ Theory Bros First Base: Max shows Bad and Cellbit his investigation room at 1:45:00. Starred because it’s a good section to watch for a quick recap of the current lore.

☆ Ramon’s Nightmare: After the egg graduation, the Code attacks 4:18:00. I recommend watching the entirety of its attack, until the vod ends.

☆ Dapper’s First Death: There is a LOT of lore in this vod. The French arrive in a plane crash around 1:25:00. Code attack 3:05:00. Bad learns about Sofia 5:15:00. Dapper dies 6:44:00. Bad goes to destroy the supercomputer 7:00:00 and I would recommend watching until 8:24:00.

Bobby’s Dungeon Event: The entire server helps Jaiden and Roier see Bobby again. Later, Bad and Cellbit spy on Quackity. Would recommend watching up until 4 hours.

Cellbit “Traitor” Arc: Cellbit goes missing and returns different. The comment section has timestamps. Cellbit’s wiki should explain the situation fully from his perspective.

Pomme Attack: Occurs 40 minutes in. Pomme is attacked by the code.

Black Box Recovery: Talk with Sofia + the discovery of the plane black box around 2:55:00.

Cellbit + Felps Rescue: Timestamps in the comment section. Honestly not that important for Bad’s personal lore.

Train Tracks Investigation: Bad, Forever, Baghera, and Cellbit walk to the ends of the train tracks at 2:22:00.

Grim Reaper Lore: Around 3:15:00 Cellbit wants to resurrect Roier’s grandfather. Bad is uncomfortable with this, and continuously warns against it.

I honestly don’t know how to categorize the election arc because its spans a long chunk of time. But links to Bad’s two debates are here and here.

Day 101: The Code returns at the beginning of the vod and is acting strange.

The Code Threatens Leo: 4:40:00 for a Bad and Foolish dungeon raid that’s fun to watch. The code appears 1:18:00.

☆ Blue Bird Mission: Bad, Foolish, and Cellbit assist Jaiden on her mission given by Cucurucho, and Bad is an absolute beast in the dungeon. The mission starts very early into the stream and ends around 3 hours in.

☆ The Timer Runs Out: The timer discovered in Jaiden’s mission runs out. This occurs around 30 min into the stream.

The Secret Room: 3:27:00, Bad finds a book that leads to a secret room in the dungeon, and investigates with Cellbit. I didn’t star this yet, but it could become very important information in the future. Edit: Important for Cellbit lore. Read his wikipage or watch his vods for more info.

☆ ElQuackity Assassination: Movie night (animatics are shown in the theater) and the Theorybros put in motion their plan to assassinate ElQuackity (around 2 hours in).

Mr. Mustard Goes Missing: The start of Foolish’s mission to find Mr. Mustard. Included because it’s a good kickstart to Foolish’s Federation lore, which you can learn more about on his wiki. Also includes Bad and Foolish’s 3 hr contest of wills.

☆ Election Dinner: Pre-election dinner and speech, and more code lore.

Cucurucho’s Survey: Cucurucho gives Bad a task 30 minutes in, and collects it 4 hours in. The Federation responds on this stream, time stamp in the comments.

☆ ElQuackity Assassination #2: Bad formulates a plan to eliminate ElQuackity from the elections, and then goes to execute it.

☆ Dapper’s Kidnapping: Quackity’s POV goes more in-depth on Dapper’s end, but Bad has a nice monologue afterwards.

Elections: Aftermath of the elections, stream of the results is on Quackity’s channel.

Nether Escape: Forever’s nether escape plan. Also the start of Bad’s “vacation arc” where he tries to “rest” (read: cope with alcohol and Skeppy) after the elections.

Dapper's Death Day: Bad celebrates Pomme and Tallulah's birthdays, but notices Dapper is missing. He finds a message from Dapper an hour in.

Quackity Returns/Skeppy Call: Quackity returns and Bad questions him a little. He also succesfully calls Skeppy and, afterwards, drops lore on his backstory.
