Ohio republicans trying to hold an election they hoped would go unnoticed in order to deny Ohioans simple majority rule (changing it from 50% to 60% majority), only for it to be one of the highest voter turnouts for an August election ever in the state AND the votes against them being 60%+ anyway? Lol. Lmao even.

Ohio voters handed anti-abortion Republicans a stinging defeat. Those voters approved Issue 1 which puts reproductive freedom into the Ohio Constitution. The just passed amendment also protects the right to contraception and fertility treatment.
Results are still coming in. But with 85% of the votes counted, about 55.5% of Ohioans voted to protect reproductive freedom. And most of the remaining uncounted votes come from large urban counties which approved Issue 1 with over 65% of the vote.
Ohio voters approved a constitutional amendment on Tuesday that ensures access to abortion and other forms of reproductive health care, the latest victory for abortion rights supporters since the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade last year. Ohio became the seventh state where voters decided to protect abortion access after the landmark ruling and was the only state to consider a statewide abortion rights question this year. The outcome of the intense, off-year election could be a bellwether for 2024, when Democrats hope the issue will energize their voters and help President Joe Biden keep the White House. Voters in Arizona, Missouri and elsewhere are expected to vote on similar protections next year. Ohio’s constitutional amendment, on the ballot as Issue 1, included some of the most protective language for abortion access of any statewide ballot initiative since the Supreme Court’s ruling. Opponents had argued that the amendment would threaten parental rights, allow unrestricted gender surgeries for minors and revive “partial birth” abortions, which are federally banned. Before the Ohio vote, statewide initiatives in California, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Montana and Vermont had either affirmed abortion access or turned back attempts to undermine the right. Issue 1 specifically declared an individual’s right to “make and carry out one’s own reproductive decisions,” including birth control, fertility treatments, miscarriage and abortion.
It's a great victory for women and freedom in general. And it's a bad omen for GOP prospects in 2024.
Donald Trump carried Ohio both in 2016 and 2020. But the Republican insistence on controlling women's bodies will probably hurt the party there and elsewhere. And any attempt by the GOP to moderate its stand on abortion will result in major pushback by radical fundamentalist Christians who would like to return to the societal standards of the 17th century.

Aggressive tribalism and doubling down on a broken system aside, it's always struck me as a bit arrogant that the "vote blue no matter who" crowd attributes every non-vote/third-party vote to someone who would otherwise support the Dem's chosen candidate but got cold feet at the last minute. My guy, you keep banging on that "lesser of two evils" drum all you want, but I don't think you're gonna like the outcome if you ever successfully convince a lot of the people who voted third party in 2020.

This is bigger than any one election. He has a heavy hand in killing 40,000 Palestinians in less than 4 months. Voting for Joe Biden is voting for Genocide. In Michigan today, and beyond."

Fuck Texas's A-G right now. No respect for women, Texas Republicans? No peace! (sorry for misquoting from "The Simpsons" episode Homer Badman there!)
Tumblr media
There is no better illustration of why I shout that ELECTIONS HAVE CONSEQUENCES than the the aftermath of Roe v. Wade being overturned. It's absolutely frightening -- especially when you see the threats made by the Texas Attorney General in the case of the woman who won court approval to terminate a non-viable pregnancy that could cause her significant future fertility issues and life-threatening complications otherwise:
Tumblr media
It's disgusting and heartless, and just another indication of how drastically life has changed for people in the United States since 2016. Even if a court-approved procedure that could save a woman's life (and potentially preserve the lives of future children that she may have) were to take place, the top law enforcement official in the State of Texas is threatening the doctors, nurses, hospitals, and any other care-givers with criminal prosecution and the possibility of civil lawsuits that could be brought against any of them by any random citizen of the state. This is our country now.

Ok I get that you hate voting and fine fair. But would you stand by and do nothing in the trolley problem? How would that help anything. I just see you attach this element of approval to the act of voting, that just... isn't really there.
I'm not voting for someone supporting genocide hope that helps

Kevin McCarthy should make us all feel better about our jobs, I’ve had coworkers I didn’t get along with, I’ve done stupid things, but I’ve never been so hated that I lost fourteen consecutive elections & then got dissed by my opponent during a speech while everyone cheered

@bunnybolt asked:
"were you ever going to tell me the truth?" for Toshinori
[Starter Meme - Unknown! | Prompted/Accepting!]
"Kid,..." Yagi trailed off, unsure how to answer. Everything was-- tricky. Always, always tricky. As All Might, he never faltered- he always had the right path. Or at least- that was what he liked for everyone to think...but when it came to reality....to Toshinori Yagi--- it was difficult.
Why couldn't the kid have asked this of All Might? When he was in that form, he quite literally felt like he was more- better. When he was this shriveled husk...it was as if the world were shrouded in a thick fog. Maybe he'd just gotten too used to being invisible, when he was like this.
Tumblr media
"....I didn't know if there would be a good time,...if one would ever come up." He still had a few secrets bouncing about in his head- it didn't matter which one it was...the few that remained...he didn't want to burden Young Midoriya. The kid...already had more than enough on his plate.

« That Trump would say what he's said and done what he's done is no surprise; he is a profoundly damaged human being, emotionally and psychologically. And he’s been entirely transparent about who he is. The most troubling aspect of this whole troubling drama has been the people in the Republican Party who, though they know better, have accommodated themselves to Trump’s corruptions time after time after time. Some cheer him on; others silently go along for the ride. A few gently criticize him and then quickly change topics. But they never leave him.
By now I know how this plays out: For most Republicans to acknowledge—to others and even to themselves—what Trump truly is and still stay loyal to him would create enormous cognitive dissonance. Their mind won’t allow them to go there; instead, they find ways to ease the inner conflict. »
— Peter Wehner writing at The Atlantic (archived).
Donald Trump is powerful because Republicans permit him to have power over them. They have known about his anti-democracy tendencies since 2016. But the GOP chose to stick with Trump because they thought his demagoguery could help them politically.
They had several occasions to jettison him, including two impeachment trials, but instead decided to cling to him. Some may claim privately that they wish he would go away but then they fail to do anything to make him go away.
Donald Trump is a product of the Republican Party. A political organization that would give rise to one totalitarian would certainly be fertile ground for others.
Republicans like Trump and his sycophants get elected not just because people vote for them but because others fail to vote against them.
