MIT engineers 3D print the electromagnets at the heart of many electronics

The printed solenoids could enable electronics that cost less and are easier to manufacture — on Earth or in space.

Imagine being able to build an entire dialysis machine using nothing more than a 3D printer. This could not only reduce costs and eliminate manufacturing waste, but since this machine could be produced outside a factory, people with limited resources or those who live in remote areas may be able to access this medical device more easily. While multiple hurdles must be overcome to develop electronic devices that are entirely 3D printed, a team at MIT has taken an important step in this direction by demonstrating fully 3D-printed, three-dimensional solenoids.

Rewatching the 90s live action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie, a nice little touch is that they go out of their way to establish that the evil ninjas are not Japanese (except the Shredder) and that the Japanese-American community has actually been warning the authorities about the evil Foot Clan.

I don't know how many people remember this, but in the 80s/90s in America there was a lot of anxiety / prejudice towards Japan, which was perceived as this mysterious place full of workers who were "too" efficient compared to lazy Americans and thus were going to crush the American car industry or something.

Specifically, I remember an American car dealer (as in he sold American car brands like Fords or Chevys) who ran a local ad urging people to "buy American" instead of supporting "communist Japan."

Shoutout to the journalist back then who covered the story / called him out on his prejudice + pointed out that Japan was not a communist country. No matter the era, there were / are people pushing back against stupidity and bigotry. And you can be one of them. :)

Anyway, TMNT is a great movie.

In the pursuit of efficient energy utilization, scientists are looking into materials, i.e., thermoelectric materials, that can efficiently turn heat into electricity. One specific type, called topological magnets, is getting a lot of attention because they exhibit the anomalous Nernst effect. In the anomalous Nernst effect, a voltage is generated perpendicular to both the temperature gradient and an applied magnetic field in a ferromagnetic material.

Thick-film conductive ink suitable for large-area, large-current printed electronics

A thick-film, electrically conductive ink suitable for printing electronic circuits and sensors on the surfaces of films and other substrates to manufacture printed electronics has been jointly developed by NIMS, Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd. (based in Minato City, Tokyo), N.E. CHEMCAT CORPORATION (based in Minato City, Tokyo) and Priways Co., Ltd. (a NIMS-founded startup based in Tsukuba, Ibaraki). Printed electronics are manufactured using additive methods (i.e., electronic circuits are directly printed on the surfaces of substrates) rather than conventional subtractive electronics manufacturing (i.e., metallic films are first deposited on substrate surfaces and unnecessary film regions are then removed to form circuits). The additive method uses less metallic materials than the subtractive method, making it more environmentally friendly and inexpensive. In addition, the additive method can be used to print electronic circuits on the surfaces not only of rigid substrates but also flexible ones. Because of these advantages, the additive method is expected to serve as an effective wiring technique for use in next-generation device fabrication.
