All These Devices Are Now In Your Pocket
Select photos from the Uncanon Valley Museum's installation of the same name, intended to show youngsters just how much utility has been compressed into a single device, and how much the market has narrowed because of it.
By Row:
Martel InstaKlik Camera (1984) / Melinoë Industries GPS-2s (2001)
Fatholla Light Meter (1977) / Issac's Brand Underwater MP3 Player (2003)
Klaxaxabaxan™ Handheld Game (1994) / "Prince Adrian" Platinum Edition Speak & Spell, Tiffany's (1966)
Edison High-Freq K3030 Camera (1973) / L700 Four-Demon Chest, Panasonic (1981)
Splap-it! Game, traditional (1922) / Demiurgical Responder Engine, J.W. Welles & Company (1873)
L'l Farnsy Vacuum-Tube Radiotrox (3022), Poch Ackaoch Perpendicular Receiver (1971)
The images above in this post were made using an autogenerated prompt and/or have not been modified/iterated extensively. As such, they do not meet the minimum expression threshold, and are in the public domain.
Process under the fold:
Lotta prompts here, so I'm going to just go over my process with these.
I took a number of pictures of consumer electronics, along with some wild card objects, and ran them through with Midjourney's /describe feature.
I then shuffled the resulting prompts, separating them with :: marks, resulting in prompts like the following example:
a gold and red medallion located on a white background, in the style of rangercore, konica auto s3, curved mirrors, shuzo oshimi :: the skull in a purple outfit is made from a plastic, orange and green, in the style of m42 mount, terrorwave, packed with hidden details, destroyed gadgets sculptures, katsuhiro otomo, toy camera effects, science academia
The :: marks are used to denote weights normally, but if you don't weight them, MJ tends to blend the concepts. So after that I just appended:
:: electronic device photograph on white background
The example prompt was for the "Edison High-Freq K3030 Camera (1973)" image.

Go!
This is Apollo Control at 102 hours into the flight of Apollo 11
It's grown quite quiet here in Mission Control
A few moments ago flight director Gene Kranz requested that everyone sit down
Get prepared for events that are coming
And he closed with a remark of good luck to all of you

Short version: publishers are price gouging libraries that make electronic books available to their patrons.
From the article:
"CT Library Consortium Executive Director Ellen Paul told legislators that librarians pay half price for most print books in their collections, but e-books are a different story.
"According to Paul, e-books cost six to 10 times more than a print book and are removed from the collection after either two years or 26 borrows.
"'Connecticut libraries, they just can’t keep up. The waitlists for e-books are over six months long. Our budgets are strained because we have to keep rerenting Harry Potter at the same exorbitant prices over and over again,' Paul said."

Whenever I see something about a bridge failing, I think about the London Bridge. The old London Bridge, the first one, which was first put to use in 1209 and remained in service until 1831. Until 1729, it was the only bridge across the Thames in London.
And sure, I know the ships were smaller then... But there was a drawbridge portion to allow larger ships to pass through. I can't imagine that in 600, no ships ever collided with the bridge.
Until 1761, people were living in houses on top of the bridge. The bridge survived several massive fires (and a space between the houses from a previous fire actually prevented the Great Fire of London in 1666 to spread to Southwark).
We like to think we know everything better than people 1000 years ago, that history is progressive, but I'd like to know whether our modern steel-and-concrete bridges will last as long.

Good fortune (and friends) allowed me to catch this at the Roxie the other week! 'Twas just a fellow renting out the screen for a single showing of his work, charging $3.00 for admission as if it were a train ride.
The enthusiasm and love from the crowd warmed my heart and made it a wonderful viewing experience. Seemed like many knew the filmmaker (though I didn't) and I was (eventually) thrilled to find that the guy whispering behind me throughout the film was an ex-BART operator sharing lore and decked out in full operator uniform. People clapped as the train pulled into their home stations and there was the gentle sounds of audience approval at various points through the film/interview voice overs.
I wouldn't really call myself a "transit nerd" but I am grateful for transit infrastructure and I really enjoyed the positive spin put on the film. Feel good easy watching. Jump to the ~32:45 mark to leave Embarcadero & witness the Transbay Tube.

***if i get this $40 i will be able to afford a weekly MetroCard, which would cover me for subway rides until my next paycheck***
hey, so i don't get paid this week because all my hours were cut last week, which is a problem because i only have enough munny left for the subway through Friday. i need to get my antipsychotics (which run out very soon) from my pharmacy, i need to get to an event at work on Saturday, and then i need money thru next Thursday (my next paycheck).
all-in-all i need around $40 for all of these subway rides. if you could help me with this i'd be most gracious🥺🥺🥺

picture is a screenshot of a song i found recently while scrolling thru the Odio-hime Radio algorithmically generated Spotify playlist (HOW'S THAT FOR MEANINGLESS JARGON), which used to be full of cool stuff but now for some reason is a weird mix of bad "quirky" stuff (a lot about p**p??? why???) and children's music??? the latter confuses me because my music is definitely not for kids, the closest exception being "Kitty Cat" by @izukuleeyoung & me, which wasn't even meant as a kids' song but just happens to be the most kid-friendly non-instrumental track either of us have.
Tumblr media
however, there are a few (emphasis on "few") gems in the list, so check out the list if you use Spotify i guess?????
wanna start posting about songs i listen to more, so i am gonna attempt to do that lol
