Born into one of the most prominent families in Milan, Italy, Nicola had a very different upbringing compared to most children her age. Joining her older brother, Lorenzo, in the city's most elite private school, her father's expectations for her were far from that expected of her brother. But not in the best way. With Lorenzo as the family's natural successor, this did not save Nicola from her father's watchful eye. He wanted his daughter to join the family business, an exhausting request she had denied him time and time again. Though she respected her father and all that he has built, it was simply not what she wanted for herself. As her mother's daughter, she grew up with passions and dreams of her own, and with every intention to see them through whether her father liked it or not. But upon her mother's death, Antonio's fear of losing his children only tightened his grip on them; he used this time to ship Nicola to a Catholic school in Sicily while he had his only son shadow his every move. This meant that while he taught his son all the ways of his legal (and illegal) businesses, Nicola was left in the dark. With no knowledge that her father ran the most notorious mafia in the city, or that her brother was next in line, she knew nothing behind the reasons that left her life crumbling to dust many years ago.

From a very young age, Lorenzo has followed in his father's footsteps. Anything he couldn't learn from books, he learned from him — from proper etiquette to the many ways a man can charm his way into people's trusts. Over time, he not only grew to emulate his mentor but exceeded the expectations set for him. As the one and only son of Antonio Zanetta, this meant that Lorenzo held the key to his father's empire from the day he was born. To the public, he was the natural successor to the family's many successful businesses. Underground, however, he was the indisputable heir to Milan's most powerful mafia — La Rosa Scarlatta. Determined to prove that he was more than his last name, and therefore worthy of his birthright, Lorenzo put himself through school before working his way up the ladder to finally becoming Antonio's second-in-command — legal and otherwise. But, as his entire life's purpose is to preserve and fortify all that his father — and forefathers — have built, there is nothing Lorenzo wouldn't do to protect his family and their legacy. Even if death calls for it.

ACINQUE Un archivio d’immagini e parole per la Sicilia

Seconda mostra alla Legatoria Prampolini via V. Emanuele II 333 - Catania 

dal 17/11/2019 - al 21/11/2019

A un anno esatto dalla prima mostra a Palermo (presso l’Oratorio di San Mercurio), s’inaugura il 17 Novembre alle ore 19.00, nella rinnovata Legatoria Prampolini di Catania (Via Vittorio Emanuele II, 333) la seconda tappa espositiva del progetto ACINQUE - Un archivio d’immagini e parole per la Sicilia. Una raccolta di circa sessanta libri d’artista di formato A5 (210 x 148 mm), realizzati mediante diverse tecniche: dal disegno alla pittura, dalla fotografia digitale al collage, accomunati da un unico tema, ovvero il patrimonio materiale e immateriale della Sicilia

Il progetto è stato ideato nel 2018 da Giuseppe Mendolia Calella, curatore e co-fondatore della piattaforma sulle arti visive Balloon Project, contestualmente al ciclo di eventi per la rassegna ATTRAVERSO nell’ambito di Palermo Capitale della Cultura. In quell’occasione era stata lanciata una call in cui s’invitavano artisti, scrittori, fotografi, e operatori culturali di ogni sorta, a realizzare un libro in copia unica o tiratura limitata.

Dopo il successo della prima mostra palermitana, la call è stata riaperta e l’archivio si è arricchito di nuovi contenuti.

In occasione della seconda mostra dell’archivio sarà presentato un folio edito in collaborazione con la casa editrice Moondi contenente testi critici di Cornelia Lauf, Aurelia Nicolosi e Giuseppe Mendolia Calella, traduzioni di Gesualdo Busacca.

Laglio, Italy was Eleonora D'Angelo's birthplace, the matriarch of the Zanetta family.

However, since moving to Milan to pursue her university studies, it had been years since she had gone back. Plans were made but none had come to fruition, especially not after meeting Antonio Zanetta. In a whirlwind romance, the two fell in love, and a year later, they were married with baby Lorenzo on the way.

All was well, for a time. Until Eleonora was diagnosed with cancer.

With her life hanging in the balance, Antonio did everything he could to make everything as comfortable as possible for his wife. Thus, the start of their annual summer visits back to Eleonora's hometown.

This was where Lorenzo met Giovanni Fiore, the eldest of one of the more affluent families in Laglio. With each summer, their friendship grew, and soon, Lorenzo had found solace in his new friend, one he struggled to find with anyone back in Milan.

Lorenzo didn't know it then, but many of his schoolmates had been warned about the "Zanetta boy". Not for anything he'd done, but more because of his father, or rather his father's more unfavorable reputation. The few friends he did have were the sons and daughters of his father's mafia, or so he learned later on in life. But even they didn't come close to that of his friendship with Giovanni. The rest, however, stayed clear of him. In his youth, life in Milan just felt alien to Lorenzo, an entire world he found impossible to connect with — especially when his mother was ill and only had years, maybe months on her.

So, every summer, he looked forward to their annual summer trips. What was meant to help his mother heal had become healing for him, too. With endless days spent under the sun, beside Gio and the rest of their friends, it was a beautiful life; a break he never knew he needed.

Lorenzo soon found that he could be himself there. He didn't need to worry about his mother as much. It was as if being back in her hometown and under the bright Italian sun did her more good than her chemo was. And his father? His father was an entirely different man when in Laglio — more caring, more loving, more present.

A couple of years later, Eleonora beat cancer, and all was well, again. For a time.

She was halfway through her second pregnancy when she relapsed, and Nicola was born earlier than intended to keep both mother and child safe. But despite the remarkable delivery, Antonio kept a close watch on his wife and daughter ever since, out of fear that he'd lose one or the other. Or worse, both.

Eleonora Zanetta eventually passed a few years later, but not without a fight, bestowing the best of herself upon her children before she left. It was with this strength that a young Lorenzo fought back against his father, to allow them to return to Laglio where they had been absent for a couple of summers after his mother's death.

"Mamma would not have wanted you to keep Laglio from Nicola*," Lorenzo had said, standing his ground. "She's going to be eighteen, Papà, and you've kept her from the world for too long."
