One tusk grows the wrong way!!! I came across this elephant in the bush. From far I did not notice first that his one tusk grows backwards. It was strange to see. Old Friends

March 12, 2018

First weekend in Bangkok which also concluded my first week in Thailand. Thoughts so far: the food is so much better than Sri Lankan food (and yes Jo, mango sticky rice is as wonderful as you said it would be), the people once again are very friendly-- though not many speak English in Sing Buri-- Hannah and Daisy are great roommates, the first week was more touristy than expected, I feel like I should be reading more, Thailand has The Lion King on Netflix, I’m feeling a little homesick for Sri Lanka, to be able to see my Thai friends again was an astounding blessing that I still cannot wrap my mind around.

We stayed at Yoo Yen Pen Sook in Bangkok-- a perfect walk to BTS and the Chatuchak market which we attended both Friday night and Sunday afternoon. This hostel reminded me of a Nashville coffee shop and gave us a little break from the heat with some air conditioning. And we finally had a nice bathroom where you felt completely clean after a shower.

Saturday I was able to meet up with Pinky, Marwin, and Thalia for a few hours which was so great. A bit awkward at first since it’s been a year since we’ve seen each other, but it was really nice to hang out with them. They’re all still very much the same. I wonder if I’m the same to them… Anywho, we went to Pepper Lunch-- a Japanese style cafe-- and got some bubble tea. I found out that Marwin takes fifteen classes during the school year which is absolutely insane. Thalia is graduating this year, and Pinky is going to university in Ohio! After lunch, I joined Pinky when she went to the screening of “Vinci”, a Polish film, which was pretty decent and quite fun! It was at this art museum/shopping center, and there were many international people in the audience, including the Polish Ambassador. We snagged a Polish donut after the film and walked around the building-- which was quite modern.

Saturday night, I went to Khao San Road with Marie, Karla, Daisy, and Hannah where I tried mango sticky rice and alcohol for the first time (safely and responsibly and legally I should add). Sticky mango rice-- two thumbs up. Strawberry Daiquiri-- one thumb up. The bar was really loud and I was beyond tired and the drink was sugary-- too sugary-- so we left after about half an hour for some more walking around.

Today was our first day with the elephants and I’m completely in love. They’re so sweet. We fed them bananas by the bunch and for Boon Reung (which is Thai for ‘successful’). Elephant tongues feel really strange. We also cut some corn for the elephants and helped give them a mud bath in a giant pit near the river. The mahouts got into a mud fight, which of course we got wrapped up into, and one of them smeared a few of us. He put it on both of my cheeks, and I’m almost certain that the mud pit has some elephant pooped mixed in there. So there’s that. The day was lovely, still a little touristy, but I either have to change my mindset or be patient with the programs. Let’s see where the rest of the week takes me!

Thailand has reported 2,826 cases of coronavirus and 49 fatalities since the outbreak first emerged in January. One of the biggest casualties of the shutdown in Thailand, is the population of country's captive elephants. There are some 4,000 captive elephants in Thailand, mostly used as safari animals for tourists. But with no tourist income and the uncertainty over when tourism might resume, the caretakers are finding it increasingly difficult to feed the jumbos, who need 200-300 kg of food a day. According to World Animal Protection (WAP), over 2000 captive elephants are in urgent need of help. Save The Elephant Foundation's founder, Lek Chailert, said: "If there is no support forthcoming to keep them safe, these elephants — some of whom are pregnant — will either starve to death or maybe put on to the streets to beg."
