You may not recognize this Vivien Leigh film, and that’s because she never made it. Well, at least she didn’t finished it. In 1953, aged 39, she went to Ceylon to begin principal photography in what was about to be her next film, Elephant Walk. Her costars were Dana Andrews and aussie Peter Finch, with whom it was rumored she was having a torrid affair. After shooting on location, they all went back to Hollywood to resume shooting and that's where her mental breakdown made impossible to continue. She was taken home to England by her husband Sir Laurence Olivier for treatment, and was diagnosed with manic depression (now known as bipolar disorder), and thus she was replaced in the role by a very young and also stunningly beautiful Elizabeth Taylor. In fact they were so similar in looks that they kept Leigh's footage on location and you can see her in the distance in long shots in the final movie. I’ve always been obsessed with this movie and what would’ve been and trying to imagine how she would have looked in it. And so this is an attempt to capture her beautiful mature beauty in something that never really was. This is my special, personal homage to the talented and beautiful Vivien Leigh on her birthday. La Piste des éléphants (titre original : #ElephantWalk) est un film américain réalisé par #WilliamDieterle, sorti en 1954.

Avec #ElizabethTaylor

John Wiley, un riche planteur de thé de Ceylan, épouse Ruth (prénommée Rita dans la version doublée en français) lors d'un voyage en Angleterre. Après leur voyage de noce, la jeune femme arrive dans son nouveau domaine avec son mari, un nouvel univers loin de chez elle. Entourée de domestiques et d'un majordome plutôt hostile, elle doit apprendre les codes inhérents à sa nouvelle fonction de maîtresse de maison. Les éléphants des environs rôdent autour de la bâtisse. Ruth apprend que la propriété est construite sur la piste que ceux-ci empruntaient pour aller s'abreuver et s’aperçoit également que la mémoire de son défunt beau-père hante la plantation.

the more i think about it the more i despise the fact the R.M. gave rose and dimitri a 7 YEAR AGE DIFFERENCE???? and made rose a minor for the start of their relationship.

personal anecdote coming up:

i recently graduated from hs and had prom and a boy in my class (who’d recently turned 18) brought his 23 year old gf to prom (wtf). that’s an even smaller age difference than dimitri and rose, and it was so jarring to know that someone i knew was in a relationship with such a stark maturity difference. he’s 18, fresh outta highschool, not even in college yet, and she’s a 23 year old woman who has a career and an adult life.

there are other details that makes their relationship even more unhealthy, and are coincidentally similar to rose and dimitris relationship. they are in such different stages of life and the power dynamic is completely inappropriate for a romantic relationship.

i know a lot of people think it’s a little different because rose is “mature for her age” but that’s a ridiculous reason to excuse that sorta thing. partly because it’s an excuse that our society/ culture uses to let men prey on “young women” (girls), but also because roses maturity is a product of her trauma.

i’ve said this before, but the only way i can reconcile this in my head while still staying true to the story to to have dimitri be 20 or 21 and rose be 18. this is still a relative maturity difference, but theyd be in much closer places in their lives.

it also makes their relationship more compelling. they’d only have a two year age difference; rose would soon be shoved out of school and into the same dangerous and sacrificial career as dimitri. they’re both young and already experienced more loss than they should’ve.

and yet there’s been a power dynamic superimposed upon them (instead of one being inherent to their relationship) and they’d both be able to see past the absurdity of it: that the world has decided that one has more authority and power and the other is still a student, a novice who supposedly knows so much less than the other. they could have moments between them of acknowledging that they’re more similar than others would like to believe, and they’re both victims of their environment, and too young to have so much responsibility put in them, and both secretly have know idea what their doing.

if dimitri was 20, he’d be in college in our society, his frontal lobe would still be developing, he’d be at the age when you’re still supposed to be making mistakes and figuring out who you are. and not only would he be pretty fresh out of st basils, but the loss of ivan would still be raw.

(i know i’ve said i’d be ok with him being 22 but i lied)

we could see him be uncomfortable with his role in the school, trying to enforce rules and act like an adult, like he knows what he’s doing. this would add to the thing of rose being the only person in his life able to see past his “in charge” exterior. through roses eyes we could see how insecure he actually is and how he really doesn’t know what he’s doing. hes able to convince everyone else that he’s so in control but rose can tell he’s just as lost as her.

it would just make him a more interesting character all together and again, it wouldn’t make my skin crawl.

Stressful morning for Menika 2 days ago.. 🙏🏽🐘 • 2 days ago Menika fell backwards in her nightbed and she did not have the strength to stand up on her own as she was laying in a very uncomfortable position and she already was very weak.. • After a couple hours she finally stood on her legs again because of the help of our mahouts and staff.
