Pictures from the Eleusis archaeological site (by yours truly, taken today)
Tumblr media
Below on the left is the well that was made on the spot where Demeter sat after several days of searching for Persephone, and where the locals found her. Right is a huge column. Pictures don't really do justice to the size of the broken pieces you see around. These were massive buildings.

Time Travel Question 10: Ancient History III
These Questions are the result of suggestions from the previous iteration. I'm combining some similar ones, so some are going to be a little vague. I'm going to also split into a whole lot of different polls because there were so many good and creative ideas. (Seriously, I love the people of Tumblr).
Please add new suggestions for this category below if you have them for future consideration.
You are welcome to suggest specific things from the Library of Alexandria. There will be polls for that.

Persephone's Abduction
"Persephone went willingly! Just check the oldest myth." - one too many a person on tiktok this morning.
Alright, I will. I'll use the Homeric Hymn to Demeter (7th century BCE) for you.
Tumblr media
"[..] but broad-pathed Earth gaped wide
On the Nysion plain where the lord, the Receiver of many, rushed forth
With his deathless horses, Kronos' son who has many a name.
He seized her against her will, and aboard his golden car
Carried her off, lamenting; she uttered a piercing scream"
(line 16-20)
"When the maiden shrieked in appeal to her father"
(line 27)
"While the goddess [Persephone] viewed earth and starry sky, and the strong-flowing sea
Teeming with fish, and the rays of the Sun, she still hoped to behold
Her dear mother again, and the tribes of gods eternal in race;
So long did hope soothe her mighty mind despite her grief."
(line 33-36)
"Sun, [Helios], as a god for a goddess [Demeter] show your regard for me,
If ever by word or deed your heart and spirit I pleased.
The daughter whom I bore, my sweet offshoot of glorious form,
I heard through the murmuring air giving vent to an anguished cry
As though overpowered by force, yet caught no glimpse with my eyes.
[...]
Who took her without my consent against her will by force
And vanished -"
(line 64-72)
"And the lord in his [Hades'] halls he [Hermes] discovered seated upon a couch,
And he had his revered spouse by him, though much against her will,
Since she longed for Demeter, her mother -"
(line 43-45)
"She [Persephone] quickly leaped up in delight, but secretly, glancing round,
He [Hades] gave her to eat a pomegranate's honey-sweet seed, so that there
By revered Demeter the dark-robed she would not for ever stay."
(line 73-75)
"I [Persephone] at once leaped up in delight, but Hades secretly put
A food as sweet as honey, a pomegranate's seed, in my hand
And using violence forced me to taste it against my will"
(line 412-412)

UPG: On the nature of the gods, ancestors, and maybe also mystery cults
What is a god but many of the blessed dead coming together in an afterlife.  Many joined together across space and time to form a consciousness. Together they can speak and act and live.  To me that is the mystery cult.  What is a blessed afterlife but joining with a god.  And when you pray and libate to a god you become part of them.  In life and death you then can join with many gods and in life they live close to you.
They love to come together around you.  Each time you pray and give offerings you add to them as a god.  You give part of yourself and those blessed dead that are always around us can join to become part of that god to be near you.
Giving to a god is also a way to give to the blessed dead or our ancestors.  There then is a way that ancestral gods mean something.  Our ancestors can remember what it means to be part of a god they themselves sacrificed to.  Though I should say, that doesn’t mean you cannot worship gods who are not ancestral to you.  You still help a god come together around you by giving to them.
So libate! The gods live and they live around us. They can hear and feel us and they are always with us.

Dionysus and Demeter [Sources]
In case you didn't know, Dionysus was considered a son of Demeter by some ! You have heard of Semele, Persephone, and people fighting between Hades or Zeus, and how many adoptive parents he had. But Demeter is a very less known mother of this little ram, mainly because we don't have many sources for it... But we still have some, after all. And here i am to show them.
Ἴακχος ( Yaco ) is an epithet for Dionysus, similar to Zagreus or Bacchus, which are also used as a name ! This name was mainly used in the Eleusinian Mysteries, and, well, the name already proves why we have so little sources for this, they're still a big mystery despite everything that has been discovered about them.
It's a common knowledge between scholars to know that Demeter and her daughter ( Persephone ) were the two main goddesses worshipped in this cults, but there were other various gods and being related to these Mysteries, and one of them was a god named Yaco, son of Zeus and Demeter. Yaco has been showed to be considered a different god from Dionysus just like Zagreus, but the most reliable things show that, just like with Zagreus, Yaco is a very common epithet for Dionysus. For example, it is used a lot in The Bacchae from Euripides,
Yaco appears as a main figure in one of the important days for the Eleusynian Mysteries. And you know why? Because he was commemorating a very well-known event by everyone: when Demeter was all over the place looking for her daughter, Persephone. And in the end of the event, he's reunited with both in order to perform dances and rituals regarding the Mysteries.
Some details that show the two of them being close are everywhere, it's just hard to find them. For example, I found this one last year: According to the Orphic Hymn XL to the Eleusinian Demeter, she’s Dionysus’ companion !
We have to remember as well that Persephone, Demeter and Dionysus are all very closely related to snakes ! The first one probably comes due to the whole “Zeus turning into something”; Demeter’s connection comes from the Orphic Hymn XL as well; and Dionysus in one of the many myths, the one in which he’s kidnapped by sailors, he turns the ropes into snakes.
Not to forget the three of them have been considered Ctonic gods at some point or another.
Aaand that was it ! It's not as much as with Semele and Persephone, i'm aware, but sadly this is everything that i've been able to find this far. If i ever have more access to less-known sources, i will let all of you know inmediatly.
This was done mainly for @decemebercircus who was looking for sources regarding Demeter being a mother figure to Dionysus. Hope it works for something.

Kala Eleusinia!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Last night began the Greater Eleusinian Mysteries - Eleusinia ta Megala - which are sadly lost to us now. But to many Hellenists, myself included, this is still one of the most sacred festivals and we celebrate the best we can.
As Demeter mourned the loss of Her beloved daughter, She came to Eleusis in the guise of an old woman and asked King Celeus for shelter. He brought Her into his palace and placed his sons in Her care. To reward him for this kindness, She began the process of making one of his sons immortal, only to be stopped by his wife, Metanira, who panicked when she saw an old woman putting her baby into an open flame.
Demeter instead taught the other son, Triptolemus, the secrets of agriculture and commended Celeus to build Her a temple. It was here that She waited, withholdings Her gifts from the earth, until Persephone was returned to Her at last.
Eleusis became a major cult center for the Goddesses, and hosted the Mysteries: the Lesser Mysteries once a year, and the Greater Mysteries every four years. Among that which was revealed in the Mysteries was agricultural knowledge and the secret to a blessed afterlife under Persephone.

Slow dripping Eleusis at you because it’s a lot of fucking rocks. Guess who made the mistake of stepping on the wrong unmarked slab of marble and immediately got yelled at by the ticket booth lady? Me! Of course it’s me! Listen, the town of Eleusis is a dismal industrial wasteland and they’ve just begun to put money into this site so it’s a little rough, but the actual site and small museum are astonishing. I thought I knew a little about Eleusis but this place blew my mind. If you’re headed to Greece this looks pretty far out of the way but it’s just a 35 minute drive from the Acropolis and it’s so worth the half day trip. Love Demeter and Persephone? This is THE place to immerse yourself in their worship. Even as I was looking across the sea from atop the site at the ugly oil refinery junk rusting in the foreground, I couldn’t deny that this place feels holy and sacred. And lovers of Dionysus will be shocked at the number of intact artifacts found and displayed here. Stay tuned for an Eleusis photo dump.

The Telesterion, Eleusis.
Still can't believe we got to see the sanctuary at Eleusis by ourselves with no one else there. It felt like a blessing of Demeter to just stand there in the center of the grounds, walk through the museum, pray and leave our offerings in silence without the clamor and intrusion of other tourists. Bless the Great Goddesses, may I one day find my feet entering her sacred grounds again.

In the plain of Nysa
Legato Bluesummers - Hierophant/Highpriest
Hierophant/High priest of the twins’ cult
Fiercely loyal to Nai to the point of obsession and blind adoration
This devotion for the god of war stems from the fact that although Legato was born into the status of a helot, Nai himself saw potential in the blue haired man and ordered for him to be taken in by the priesthood of his and Vash’s cult and to serve him.
Legato viewed the starborn deity as his saviour from that day on and worked tirelessly to climb the ranks of the priesthood until he eventually became the cult’s hierophant and thus the one priest with the closest connection to the gods.
When Vash escaped from the golden cage, Legato was the first one to hear about it directly from the god of war.
He takes his job as high priest with the utmost pride and seriousness, not allowing himself a single misstep be it during prayers, sacrifice or any other ritual.
One could argue he is far more of a priest towards Nai then Vash despite being the highpriest of the twins’ joined cult.
Frequently at odds with Wolfwood for his lack of piety and resolve towards their cult’s gods.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ *~*~*~*~*~*~*~ *~*~*~*~*~*~*~ *~*~*~*~
In the plain of Nysa - Synopsis:
Loosely based on the myth of Hades and Persephone.
Vash, the god of peace and twin brother of Nai, the god of war, has been sheltered for millenia within the safe havens of Mount Olympus. Or rather has been held captive by his brother for millenia.
That is until the goddess of the hunt Meryl and a satyr named Roberto help the deity to escape from Olympus into the human realm. There Vash is forced to hide in a small temple from his brother where he meets the priest Nicholas D. Wolfwood and slowly falls in love with him while also finding a sense of his own independence.
*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ *~*~*~*~*~*~*~ *~*~*~*~*~*~*~ *~*~*~*~
