I COLORED SOME BEAUTIFUL BERSERK PAGES

Sanity check, Elfhelm and Éowyn edition:
I have spent my entire LOTR-reading life feeling certain that Elfhelm knew perfectly well that Dernhelm was Éowyn, and he made a conscious decision to look the other way about it. Like, it never really even occurred to me that other people don’t read it this way…until literally this morning, when someone told me that I’m flat out wrong. I’m not the only one, right??
Tumblr media
I mean, first of all, Elfhelm’s a smart guy, and an éored is only 120 people. I think it’s more than fair to assume he had enough familiarity with his own men to notice an unexplained outsider and then ask some basic questions (especially when the unexplained outsider also had an unauthorized hobbit in tow!). Secondly, the text itself says:
There seemed to be some understanding between Dernhelm and Elfhelm, the Marshal who commanded the éored in which they were riding. He and all his men ignored Merry and pretended not to hear if he spoke.
Now, I included that second sentence because you could argue that the understanding between Dernhelm and Elfhelm is just about their agreement not to acknowledge Merry’s presence. But I don’t think it has to be read that way. This paragraph is from Merry’s perspective, so that’s the element of the understanding he’s focused on, but it doesn’t mean that’s the full extent of the agreement. And, again, it seems unreasonable to me to think that Elfhelm could have enough interactions with Dernhelm to be able to reach an understanding of any kind with him without also realizing in the process that a) Dernhelm is not one of his regular men; b) Dernhelm is acting kind of squirrely; c) Dernhelm is atypically light/small; and d) Dernhelm’s face looks an awful lot like the king’s niece.
Ultimately, it doesn’t matter because I’m gonna keep thinking of Elfhelm the way that I always have–as a good dude who keeps his mouth shut about both Merry and Éowyn because he knows how to mind his own business and he doesn’t begrudge anyone their desire to fight for the greater good. But I have to admit that my mind is kind of blown that other people never saw it that way!

Theoden: Why are Eowyn and Merry here?
Elfhelm: They're here for the battle.
Theoden: They're grounded.
Elfhelm:....
Elfhelm: Are they not allowed into battle when they're grounded?

There seemed to be some understanding between Dernhelm and Elfhelm, the Marshal who commanded the éored in which they were riding. He and all his men ignored Merry and pretended not to hear if he spoke. He might have been just another bag that Dernhelm was carrying. Dernhelm was no comfort: he never spoke to anyone.
I'm pretty certain Elfhelm knows who Dernhelm is. He's essentially going "I'm not going to say anything about it unless you do, my Lady".

More Reading Thoughts: The Steward and the King
New chapter, let’s go!
Dude Eowyn chill out lol
Eowyn: “I’m bummed because I tried to commit sudoku and it didn’t work.” Faramir: “Please don’t do that. You’re too pretty to die. But hey, if it makes you feel any better, we all might die anyway, so you might as well rest up if you wanna be able to fight.” Eowyn: “But they want me to stay in bed. And my window doesn’t look eastward :’-C” Faramir: “Oh! I can fix that! :-D”
AND NOW MERRY AND FARAMIR GET TO CHAT!! DUDE!!
First Bergil, and now Faramir!! This just in: All of Pippin’s friends eventually become Merry’s friends. When am I gonna get my scene with Beregond and Merry, huh??
(I probably won’t but a girl can dream)
Tbh I think the Warden ships Farawyn
Faramir: “I’mma give you my dead mom’s cloak ‘cause it’s beautiful and sad like you”
Faramir: “Man, it’s been great hanging out with you. I really hope the world doesn’t end now, ‘cause I don’t want to lose this.” Eowyn, a genius: “This what?”
This whole scene plays out like a cheesy Bollywood movie. It’s so over-the-top. I love it X’-D
And then everybody MAGICALLY STARTS SINGING AT ONCE
“And his duty was to prepare for one who would replace him” 👀 John the Baptist is that you??
And here we see the healing power of love *throws confetti*
YOOOOOOO WE GET MORE GONDORIAN MUSICAL INSTRUMENTS WAIT
Okay so we have trumpets, bells, harps, viols, flutes, and horns listed so far. I’m gonna want to answer that ask more thoroughly at some point won’t I?? ‘Cause I have didn’t have this information before but NOW I DO
Heyyy there’s somebody named Hurin! Hopefully his life has been better than the original one
(I can’t imagine naming your kid after someone who’s best known for having a son with the Worst Life Ever. Like, okay, sassing Morgoth to his face is pretty cool, but is it worth it?? Is it really?? Like the only thing worse would actually be naming your kid Turin. … They’ve done that too, haven’t they?)
ELFHELM!!!
ELFHELM SURVIVED!!
ELFHELM OF DAD JOKES I LOVE YOU
Hahaha hi Ioreth
“They are dear friends, I hear.” HECK YES THEY ARE
YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW RIGHT YOU ARE IORETH
Listen one of my favorite tropes is when people in-universe acknowledge the bromance as An Official ThingTM, so this is PEAK. THANK YOU TOLKIEN
Faramir: “I give you my stick.” Aragorn: “No u”
Goodness GRACIOUS that is a whole paragraph of titles for Aragorn. What the heck. Who is it in my notes that always tags Aragorn as “local man has too many names, local authorities report” because you are RIGHT
“Now according to tradition, he should take the crown from his father, but given that his father didn’t have the crown and is also very much dead—”
Faramir: “I give you the crown” Aragorn: “NO U”
And now Frodo does the task of a ring-bearer in an actual wedding, which is to carry the shiny thing to somebody so they can give it to somebody else
“HEY! LET’S HEAR IT FOR CAPTAIN AMERICA!”
Woohoo King Aragorn!
WAIT
HOLD UP
‘ITS GATES WERE WROUGHT OF MITHRIL AND STEEL’??
YOOOOOO!! That’s a 100% METAL DOOR!! In a MEDIEVAL SETTING!! Even WE don’t have huge metal doors for most things, and we’re in the modern age!
First of all, imagine how shiny! Secondly, IMAGINE HOW FREAKIN’ SCI-FI—
BEREGOOOOOOOOND
HELLO MY BOO I’VE MISSED YOU
“And the king said to Beregond: ‘Beregond…’”
Pffft
I must be slaphappy, ‘cause for some reason I find his name being written twice in a row to be very funny
Aragorn: “Okay so you’re not in trouble, but you’re also not allowed to be a Guard of the Citadel anymore.” Beregond: “😨☹️😭” Aragorn: “…Because you’re gonna work FOR FARAMIR! GET PROMOTED ON, IDIOT!!” Beregond: “😧 … 🤩🥳🎉🎊🎈”
Aww haha Aragorn and Eomer hug X-D
Eowyn, to Faramir: “I’ll be back later, I promise.” Eomer, probably: “👀😨😡”
Aragorn: “Pls stick around, friends, I love you guys”
Frodo: “Pippin, you were wrong, Gandalf is keeping secrets again.” Gandalf: “excuse”
Aragorn, excitedly: “LE GASP!! A TREE!!”
Okay so lemme get this straight: Aragorn wasn’t allowed to marry Arwen until he found a tree??
Right. Okay. 🤣🤣🤣
I’m sure this is very symbolically important and whatever but it’s almost 3 AM and I just think it’s the funniest thing I’ve heard all night
GLORFINDELLLLLL
GLORFINDEL HI!!
I’VE MISSED YOU FRIEND!!! 8-D
I guess all these other elves are here too but I don’t really care ROFLOL
This chapter really is the epitome of Tolkien going “oh shoot I guess I’d better include some romance in here huh”

I like the contrast of Falconia and Elfhelm, two paradises in Berserk.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Falconia is a large urban metropolis of inhuman scale ruled under the Godhand Griffith and Queen Charlotte while Elfhelhm is small rural village under the Fairy Storm Queen and Archmage Gedfring.
Falconia is made up of giant stone edifices while the buildings of Elfhelm are woven from tree branches and other natural materials incorporated into trees. The massive spirit tree that separates the Astral and Material planes rests in the center of Elfhelm while the World Tree formed from a slain Ganeshka, merging the Astral and Physical planes, forms the center of Falconia.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The differences between the two locations are war and peace. War is the state of Falconia with Griffith waging war against the magical creatures of the Astral World while the human community on Elfhelm lives in peace alongside the many astral creatures. The inhabitants of Elfhelm live in isolation and peace and while they have a field of scarecrows armed with scythes, enchanted pumpkin monsters and giant wicker man, it is purely defensive in nature with the village being a school for young sorcerers to learn magic. It is also where Casca is taken to be healed. By contrast, in Falconia Griffith’s foreign policy is one of invasion and conquest, and it is where Apostles learn to improve their fighting skills by battling monsters in the Pandemonium. The last detail shows the dark heart that exists at the center of Griffith’s vision.
The mission of the sorcerers of Elfhelm is “to safeguard the land and maintain equilibrium between our realm and the Astral World” while Griffith’s mission is to undo all that.
Elfhelm is clearly inspired by Avalon of Arthurian legend, an island of witches ruled by a fae sorcereress and healing while Falconia is inspired by Pandemonium, the capital of Hell in Paradise Lost with it’s inhuman scale, temple-like structure, pilasters and Doric pillars led by a king of demons. The essence of Elfhelm is cooperation and coexistence making it a paradise while the essence of Falconia is domination making it a dystopia under the guise of paradise.

So (I’m a fan) your Eowyn/Denethor parallels have me thinking – who on earth is Elfhelm? The books mention an “understanding” between he and Eowyn/Dernhelm and that has always fascinated me. Were they old friends? Lovers? Did Eowyn/Dernhelm command him? I know Tolkien is guilty of papering over gaps in his writing that fans work to fill but damn, this to me is one of the book’s great unsolved mysteries. He fascinates me. What’s your take?
Oh I have a very specific take on this, because Elfhelm is one of the older lords riding to the defense of Minas Tirith and is one of the Marshalls of the Rohirrim, the King's Lieutenant (not the First Marshall, since Grima ensures that no one holds that title by the War of the Ring, but functionally Elfhelm operates as First Marshall in that he orders the soldiers surrounding Edoras even if he does not have the authority to call a full muster) alongside Theodred and Eomer as second and third Marshalls. So he is a very important and powerful figure and personally trusted by Theoden. And yes he does appear to have some previous relationship with Eowyn doesn't he? I think that is because she's his niece, at least by adoption. Because Theoden's wife's name was Elfhild and, considering Rohir naming conventions (Theoden, Theodred, Eomer, Eowyn, siblings often sharing the same first particle etc) I would say Elfhelm was Elfhild's brother and so Theoden's brother in law, making him Theodred's uncle and likely very present in Eowyn's life since she was adopted by Theoden. Perhaps he was more supportive of her, perhaps he wished he'd been more able to defend her from Grima's obsession with her, perhaps after failing to save Theodred at the fords he wants to support his surviving family as much as he can? But at the very least, by this point, Elfhelm is happy to keep Eowyn's secret and allow her this last freedom of choice.

Having delayed his anointing until Edoras was rebuilt and foreign dignitaries could mark the occasion, Éomer deems it time to follow in the steps of his father at last. Truva grapples with the aftereffects of war. (An interlude between The Lady of the Rohirrim and its sequel, The Marshal of the Mark.)

Elfwine Chronicles (new LoTR stories, A Journey in the Darkness posted, 10-8-22)
Eomer and Lothiriel mourn a loss.  (Angst, Loss)
         [trigger warning:  miscarriage; child loss]
A Journey in the Darkness  -  (Oct, 4 IV)
I sat in my study, my head in my hands.  Four days. It had been four days already, and still I could not shake this terrible grief that consumed me.  As I lifted my head, I noticed my hands were shaking. My hands never shook, not even in the fiercest battle against the most fearsome of enemies.
And what of Lothiriel? If this was crushing me, as an insect under foot, what was it doing to her?  She had eaten virtually nothing since that terrible morning.  For two days after, she had not left her bed and, now, though she was up and about, she moved through the day like a wraith.
Even the sight of Elfwine did not cheer her; indeed, it made her weep, and she spent far more time than he would have liked holding him and kissing him.  But even at three years of age, he knew that something was amiss, though he knew not what and would not have understood if we told him.  And, so, some part of him tolerated his mother’s fervid attention to him.
But when he slept, or was elsewhere playing, Lothiriel would sit, curled in the large overstuffed chair in the nursery, and stare unseeingly at the empty crib.  And I did not know how to console her.
I had held her while she wept, while we wept.  I had assured her of my love.  But nothing seemed to penetrate her shell, and I felt as though I was losing her right along with the child she had so recently carried.  When finally she slept, exhausted from tears and the physical trauma, I had slipped out to the stable and saddled Firefoot.  Gamling hastened to follow me so as to afford me some guard, but without intrusion.  The moment I exited the city gates, I pressed Firefoot to a gallop, pushing him to breakneck speed.  The wind rushing past tore at my face and clothes as if to tear me from the saddle, but it seemed nothing would rip the pain from my heart.  When at last I had slowed to a stop, breathing nearly as hard as Firefoot, my grief seemed to echo to the mountains and tauntingly bounce back at me.  And, in the end, I had ridden silently back to Edoras, still wrapped in the debilitating melancholy that had settled upon me like a cloak.

Piece of Holly Black, in “The Folk of the air”
"A king is a living symbol, a beating heart, a star on which the future of the Earth is written. You must have noticed that since his reign began, the islands have changed. Storms come more quickly. Colors are a bit brighter, scents stronger... When he gets drunk, subjects become tipsy without knowing why. Where his blood falls, something grows."

✨Tolkien Family Week Roundup✨
Don’t mind me, I’m just putting all of my Tolkien Family Week pieces in one place. Participating in a big writing exercise that coincided with a major American holiday week was maybe not my best practical choice, but I’m glad I did it and happy with what I wrote! See below for my stories for each TFW prompt: 6 takes on different family dynamics in Rohan and 1 bonus Haldir story (as is my tendency).
Parent-Child: Éomer becomes a father for the first time and has lots of feelings about it
Siblings: Éowyn is frustrated by Éomer’s attempt to protect her from Wormtongue
Extended Family: Éomer’s father in law, Elfhelm, realizes what he means to Éomer in light of the many losses Éomer has already experienced
Cut Ties: Traces the unshakable bond forged by shared grief between Théodred and Éomer, enduring all the way to Théodred’s literal last words
Found Family: Haldir finds a lost and scared little human girl while on patrol in Lórien
Ancestors: Théoden’s father returns from exile against his will to take up the throne in Rohan
Freeform: Háma and his wife struggle with how to protect their children from the increasing likelihood of war

Elfhelm: So you’re a ‘chap’, are you Dernhelm?
Eowyn: Oh yes, sir.
Elfhelm: You wouldn’t say you were a girl at all?
Eowyn: Oh, definitely not, sir. I understand cricket, I fart in bed, everything.
Elfhelm: Let me put it another way, ‘Dernhelm’, you are a girl. And you’re a girl with as much talent for disguise as a giraffe in dark glasses trying to get into a ‘Polar Bears Only’ golf club.
Eowyn: Oh sir, please don’t give me away, sir. I just wanted to be like my brother and join up. I want to see how a real war is fought….so badly.
Elfhelm: Well, you’ve come to the right place, Dernhelm. A war hasn’t been fought this badly since Olaf the Hairy, Chief of all the Vikings, accidentally ordered 80,000 battle helmets with the horns on the inside.
