I could talk about Hetty and her death for hours. I could. And I have. And I will. Hetty rant under the cut if you please DFSDGSFDDS
I honestly don't even know where to begin with this. I have so much to say about Hetty to the point that I woke up at 4a.m today because I couldn't stop thinking about her.
Hetty is an absolutely magnificent character. First off- She is a Victorian Woman. Women back then wernt treated like people. They were thrown around, used and abused, before being thrown away. Hetty was forced into a marriage (with her cousin, none the less) and was forced to be the perfect high-class image her entire life.
She was probably forced into having Thomas, but even though all that, she cares about him. She killed herself to try and secure him a safe future. She thinks Thomas must hate her- resent her for what she did to herself and how she treated him- but you can tell the opposite is true. Even after Hetty is long gone, Thomas still went to her for advice. He asked her if he should marry a lady he was seeing, and he didn't know, but Hetty was there and she cared.
Hetty had all these windows put up around her for all her life. Windows specifically because you can see her, but you can't touch. You can admire, but you can't love. You can see the display version of her that was put out to see, but you never get to see the Real Henrietta Woodstone.
Until Hetty died, and met the Ghosts. Slowly, one by one, they broke down these windows and Hetty was finally able to become herself. She allowed herself to enjoy the afterlife- to indulge in everyday things like TV, smelling foods, sex, jokes and laughing, and so much more that she wasn't ever allowed to do when she was alive.
She allowed herself to love and to be loved.
She made connections with the ghosts, she had a best friend, she had arguments and betrayals, she allowed herself to feel real love for Trevor. She did this all because she knew she had nothing to fear, that no one would be able to come back and hurt her.
But then Elias came back. Actually, it turns out he had been there the entire time. Waiting and listening the entire time, underneath the very house that Hetty was haunting. Though all the years she felt safe and at home, her terrible husband was there waiting the entire time.
They were able to get rid of him, but I can only imagine how terrified Hetty must've still felt. All this time that she felt safe, he was there.
But still, she allowed herself to live, even after this. To change and grow, even though she is a hundred and fifty years old. We have watched her experience new things, we have seen her get a chance to live again through the Arondakers and their BnB.
Then, Flower got sucked off. Or so they thought, anyways. The house wasn't the same without her, whether they liked it or not- they were incomplete. Until they found out Flower had been down a well this whole time.
Desperate to get Flower out and back to the group, Hetty revealed her deepest darkest secret. Her death- suicide. She killed herself to try and save family, but then she finally let the secret of her death out to do the same thing. She saved family.
No one knew, either. Pete knew they had a telephone, Hetty even talked to him about it. When Hetty told him about her phone, all along, she had those cords tight on her neck underneath that dress. And no one knew.
Her and Trevor were having sex for MONTHS, and they probably will again someday soon. But still, he had no idea. Not once did he see those marks or that cord, not once did he ever ask any questions.
I imagine that Hetty was glad. Glad that her shameful secret could hide safe under her collar. But I think she was also hurt. Hurt that a man she has spent countless hours with doesn't realize that there is a secret under there. She works hard to hide it- the fake story made up about her Morphine induced death, so Trevor would truthfully no reason to question it- but Hetty is only human.
She feels real sorrow and real pain, but she still hides some of it. When she pulled down that collar, you can see that she is looking at Isaac. Isaac watched her grow up and pass him in age, Isaac knew her from when she was just born, Isaac is her best friend.
She looks away and looks at the ground, you can see the fear in her face. Fear that no one will treat her thr same anymore, fear that all she will be shown is pitty and apprehension. But that's not what happens. They don't pitty her, but they try to help her. She is their friend, and they don't care how she died a hundred years ago, all they care about is who she is now and if she is okay.

Learning to be Friendly
Today's prompt "Rainy Day", brought me back to the cyberpunk au featuring Elias Dawn and their little android buddy. Fifty is coming right along with learning how to be a good friend, and Elias is coming to really appreciate having him around.
Previous stories:
Error 50 | Personal Assistant
~~~
The rain used to mean so much. El used to feel it, used to be able to follow the progress of every drop from the cloud to the ground. From gentle drizzles to raucous storms, they had once had a grasp on it all. Storms, weather, the balance of energies between the sky and the earth, that had been theirs.
And somewhere deep inside, they supposed, it still was. But ever since their hands had been numbed, so many of their other senses had fallen dim too.
“I anticipate this rain will let up within the hour,” came the small, somewhat tinny voice from their shoulder. Fifty was a slight weight there, originally made of sturdy but lightweight metals and wiring for the easiest portability. El imagined his original specs had seemed quite luxurious for whoever had paid for the little assistant droid. He’d still ended up down in the scrapyards, though. El doubted he even realized he’d been rescued.
El smiled and turned away from the grimy window, the one view from the attic level of the small shack they’d broken into for shelter. “Oh yeah? You manage to connect to the weather network, Fifty?” they asked, trying to catch sight of the small droid standing on their shoulder.
The small droid, only six inches or so tall, had a surprising sense of balance where he stood. He barely wavered from El’s normal movements; his little gyroscopes must be in top shape despite his consignment to the scraps. He had his hands clasped politely behind his back. He shook his head. “I have not attempted to connect to the forecast network,” he admitted matter-of-factly. “I am equipped with predictive algorithms in case of offline needs. As you have expressed reluctance to connect to the government-sanctioned networks, I have refrained. This is friendly behavior, correct?”
El grinned. They reached up to gently brush a fingertip over the small swoop of metal meant to mimic a tidy hairstyle atop Fifty’s head. “Good man, Fifty. Only independent education networks, just to be safe.”
As Fifty lifted a hand to thoughtfully touch his head, El found themself drawn back to the window, staring out from where they sat leaning against the wall. They’d used a lot of energy climbing the service ladder out of the scrap level, and it was a wonder they hadn’t dozed off. The rain, an unexpected little reprieve from the harsh sun glancing off all the glass and metal of the city above, had invigorated them in some small, distant way that they almost forgot existed.
“El,” Fifty spoke up again, his little voice quieter than before, but using that almost programmed friendliness that probably came with his artificial voice. “I have some questions. They are not related, and I do not anticipate I will find them in the educational databases. May we discuss them?”
El smirked faintly. “Sure, Fifty. Come here.” They offered a palm at their shoulder, and once the small droid stepped onto it, ferried him around to face him better. “I’ll do my best to answer.”
Fifty nodded and placed his little hands over his chest where his heart would be if he were organic. Instead, El imagined the small power crystal somewhere beneath the layers of doll clothes and metal plating. “I am grateful, El. My first question: I do not see you without your gloves often. Why is this? My second question: Are you … saddened … by the rain?”
El stared at him thoughtfully. Sometimes, depending on the dim lighting the odd pair found themselves in, a faint blue reflection shone on Fifty’s metal plating, indicating El’s constantly-glowing eye. It was a constant reminder that they were truly an unlikely pair, and yet there they were together. El had suggested that Fifty could be their friend; asking casual questions about someone fell into that category.
“Saddened,” El repeated, intrigued by the little droid’s choice of get-to-know-you questions.
Fifty held up a hand with one finger extended to aid their prompt explanation. “A state of having been made unhappy by something.”
El snickered. “I gotcha, buddy. I was echoing you while I thought about it.” They didn’t mind explaining the nuances of conversation to the little droid, even if something like that might seem obvious. If nothing else, they wanted to see how much of it would stick in the little guy’s understanding of socializing.
“Understood!” Fifty said, his little green eye lights flickering in acknowledgement. “I await the response.”
And he did seem content to wait for however long it took. El only took a short moment to figure out how much he wanted to say. It wasn’t like the little droid had any loyalty to someone else. “Your questions are actually related, Fifty. Even if they don’t seem like they are. But before I give you the answer, I need you to promise you’ll keep it a secret.”
Fifty straightened, if it was even possible from his already prim and proper posture. “Of course, El. To reveal information given in confidence would be unfitting behavior for a friend.”
El nodded. “Exactly.” Then, they brought their free hand to their mouth to grip the glove with their teeth. Tugging it free, they revealed their hand and arm, where their brown skin was shiny and warped with layered burn scars. After spitting their glove to the side, they brought their hand close to their still-covered hand, palm up to mirror it. “My hands don’t have much feeling left in them. The gloves and bracers are to protect them from getting hurt without me noticing the damage.”
Fifty stared at El’s scarred hand for a moment before cautiously stepping across the gap between their hands, alighting on the bare palm. As they’d said, El barely felt the little footsteps. Fifty looked up from his small metal feet, and though he couldn’t make expressions on his face, El imagined an expectant look. “And the rain? How is its effect on your emotions related to these scars?”
El’s next smile was a little less beaming than usual. “I used to be able to feel the rain. Not like someone feels it falling on them, getting them soaked. It used to be a connection I had to different weather stuff. And the same people that caused my hands to be burned and numbed also numbed my connection to the rain. It’s still there, but it’s harder to reach. That’s why the rain makes me a little sad. But I still love it.”
Fifty took that in for several quiet, still seconds. The patter of the rain on the window made the backdrop of his processing. Finally, he held out his hands placatingly. “I am sorry about these things, El. I am also sorry for asking such sensitive questions. That was not friendly.”
“Oh, that’s okay,” El laughed. “You didn’t know, and I don’t mind you learning these things about me. You’ve been a good friend.”
Fifty paused again, and then turned his attention up to the window. “I am glad I’ve been a good friend. May I stand near the window? I would like to watch the rain with you, and understand the way it makes you feel. If you are willing to tell me more.”
El shifted where they sat, but something like gratitude crossed their face. “Sure, buddy. Let’s watch the rain together.”
cw: white room torture, sensory hallucinations, implied starvation, character purposefully damages his hand in order to distract himselfa (let me know if I missed anything!)
-
Is it possible? For a room to bleed?
It’s not. Teddy has to believe it’s impossible. Many things are impossible. This room should be one of them.
Then again, he used to think that many things were impossible.
He used to think that he’d never be locked in a white room, alone, and with a pit in his stomach to remind him that he hasn’t eaten in what feels like forever.
Teddy shifts slightly, uncurling from his fetal position.
He’s in a desert, and there’s sand everywhere.
No. He’s in a white room. He knows this. Then why does it feel like he’s covered in sand?
Burning, white sand. Everywhere. It’s all over him– burrowing under his skin and crawling. Crawling.
Tiny and many-legged pieces of sand. All over him. Inside him, digging deeper with each passing second. When he opens his mouth to scream, they’re suddenly in there too. His tongue is stuck to the roof of his mouth, pressed up with the force of the sand.
He coughs and coughs but he can’t spit it out.
Why is the sand white?
So much white, it’s driving him insane. The walls are bleeding and no one believes him. The white is driving him insane. Didn’t he just say that?
He doesn’t know.
No, no, it’s not the white…it's the sand. The walls are black, the sand is white. That’s right. Right?
Doesn’t matter. Nothing matters but the sand in his mouth. He wants it out. He’d do anything to get rid of the feeling of having a whole desert pressed against his teeth.
There isn't any sand. It’s just white.
The thought comes unbidden. Uncalled for. Teddy pushes himself to his feet, leaning against the wall, his legs shaking. He blinks, trying to clear his head.
All he sees is white.
Teddy collapses again, slamming his head against the wall. The sound shatters into a hundred pieces of glass, spilling across the floor. Any sound is a distraction from the racing thoughts.
He almost prefers it to the silence.
There was a time– Was? Already he speaks in the past tense, of his past life. No, he still does play the piano, he’s still capable of making music. He can still pull emotions out of a set of black and white keys.
He is still a pianist. He still has dreams and hopes.
And any sound is better than silence.
Teddy slams his fist into the wall.
Bang.
“Let me out!”
Teddy pounds the wall.
Bang. Bang. Bang.
“Where’s Elias?” He needs Elias. But maybe Elias is in another white room. Maybe Elias is in his own personal hell, right now. “Let Elias out!”
“Let us out!”
Teddy hates the white and he hates the silence. So he bangs on the wall in some semblance of a pattern. Let. Us. Out.
Soon the white walls aren’t just white. They’re dripping red. Red trickles down the white walls, and Teddy laughs.
It’s such a relief to be able to see a different color, he punches the wall even harder. He can’t feel anything– dizzy– can’t feel the damage he’s done to his hand.
Teddy stands, and the world spins around him– white and red– finally a different color. He’s never been more grateful. Never been more disgusted.
The reprieve can’t last. It's too merciful.
So he isn’t surprised when they come in, clean the blood up, and tie Teddy’s hands behind his back.
He knows that white is the only color that’s left in the world.
He’s going to drown in it.
Terrible Fic Ideas #35: Targaryen Restoration, but make it romcom
After a conversation with @tooinvestedinasoiaf the other day regarding the tendency to make Daenerys the villain in fics where Aegon and/or Rhaenys survive, I found myself wondering: what would it take to make the surviving Targaryens into one big, happy, incestuous family without sacrificing their inherent need for drama in all things?
Or: what if the Targaryen Restoration could pass for the basis of a Westerosi Much Ado About Nothing?
Aka: The Daeron the Desired Fic:
Just imagine it:
When Ned Stark learns that Robert Baratheon is on his way North, he decides its too much of a risk having Jon in Winterfell, where any member of the court might see him and see the Valyrian look beneath his Stark coloring. He tells Jon the truth of his heritage and gives him a bag of gold to set him up in a new life far from Westeros.
Jon, still struggling to think of himself as Daeron Blackfyre, eventually finds himself in Myr, where he gets hired as a warehouse clerk for a wealthy merchant. It's a position that puts him high up in the merchant's household, as Daeron's honesty, work ethic, and ability with numbers put him head and shoulders over any who held the position before.
In the course of his job Daeron comes into contact with Aegon and Jon Connington. It's a Parent Trap moment, as Jon and Aegon could pass for twins save for the hair.
After much info dump exposition, Daeron joins the crew of the Shy Maid at Aegon's urging and spends the next several months getting to know his half-siblings. Jon Connington starts out leery of him, but eventually decides Daeron is too pleased to have siblings to ever turn on them.
Daeron has been on the Shy Maid for about six months when they run almost literally into Daenerys in Tyrosh, where Jorah Mormont had helped her escape rather than allow Viserys to marry her off to Khal Drogo. Both join the crew and Aegon, Rhaenys, Dany, and Daeron become one big, happy Targaryen family.
This is where the Shakespearian comedy comes in, as Rhaenys and Aegon have been betrothed to marry, as per Targaryen custom, since pretty much the moment they arrived in Essos. Daeron's presence hadn't perturbed things too much, as he's a younger son - he can become a Kingsgaurd or marry into a Great House for an alliance. But Daenerys changes things. She's the last king's daughter and a purebred Targaryen. It makes more sense for Aegon to marry her while Daeron and Rhaenys, as half-siblings, wed to produce a cadet line.
Jon Connington rearranges the betrothals so Aegon will marry Daenerys and Daeron will marry Rhaenys in 300, when both boys turn 17.
The problem is: Aegon and Rhaenys are in love. They have been pretty much all their lives. Daenerys and Daeron aren't quite there yet, but it was something like love at first sight for them.
What follows is both tragic and comedic. Each of the betrothed pairs tries to come to terms with their betrothals, but ultimately all parties are dissatisfied but decide to make a good show of it for the sake of family unity. Aegon pines hopelessly for Rhaenys, but thinks Daeron is in love with her so says nothing because he wants his brother to be happy; Dany loves Daeron, but thinks he loves Rhaenys and only wants his happiness, &c.
This goes round in circles for a while before Rhaenys can't take it anymore and confesses to Aegon that she would rather marry him. This is about the same time Daeron does the same with Daenerys. But rather than solve anything, this just makes things worse because both pairs are committed only to loving each other from afar so as to assure their betrotheds' happiness and honor their agreements.
This too goes on for a while before the truth finally comes out. Aegon marries Rhaenys and Daeron marries Daenerys in a double ceremony.
Meanwhile, things are going pretty much per canon over in Westeros - although Robb managed to survive the Red Wedding, even if his mother and wife did not. The Targaryens use this chance to retake Dragonstone, and once there Dany's dragon eggs finally hatch - three eggs, but four dragons as Drogon has a twin here. (They're also given different names here, dealer's choice.)
The Targaryens reconquer Westeros. Aegon and Rhaenys take the Iron throne. Dany and Daeron become Lords of Highgarden after recreating the Field of Fire with the Tyrells. And, as with any Shakespearean comedy, the lovers live happily ever after.
Bonuses include: 1) Daeron fully believing he's a Blackfyre, and thus unworthy of his family's love, until the evidence of his parent's marriage is practically shoved right under his nose; 2) The many complexities of Targaryen family dynamics, even when everyone involved loves all the other members of their family and no one is trying to steal anyone's crown and/or spouse; 3) All of Westeros firmly believing that Aegon, Rhaenys, Dany, and Daeron have some convoluted polyamorous relationship going on and are only pretending to be two separate couples to keep the Faith off their back.
As always, feel free to adopt this bun - I'm sure this is only the tip of the comedic iceberg possible with this concept - just link back to me if you do anything with it.
theres just something (delusional) theres just something about the way that jon and elias talk to each other especially in s3 where theyre both kind of...familiar with each other. better the devil you know. elias is someone who jon can get mad at and be rude to because after all he’s shown himself to be a villain and the enemy. he’s someone who jon can be vulnerable to because he’s fucked up his relationships with all his other coworkers and he knows that elias is the closest thing he has to getting any help in this fucked up situation. tim saying “this place loves you too much to let you get swapped” and jon’s first thought is “what about elias? surely he’s the same?” jon can take 2 seconds out of the crushing guilt that he constantly feels for becoming an avatar of fear to tell elias to shut up or play along with elias’ smarmy remarks. for the whole time jon’s known elias he’s always been on some level scared of him but now he’s also resentful and angry and he can’t stop doing what elias tells him to do and he can’t stop reaching out towards him because he’s all that he has. so every interaction they have is charged with those conflicting feelings and weird familiarity. monster intimacy with my monster boss
DID YOU KNOW that there’s a crowdfunded indie parody/coming-of-age movie where the joker is a trans comedienne in a city where unauthorized comedy is outlawed?
it premiered several days ago at the toronto international film festival but has predictably faced pressure from WB not to screen in future, although the writer-director has said that she is determined to find ways to make it broadly accessible
there are mixed media segments in lots of different styles (it reminds me a lot of the “retold” animation collaborative projects ive seen in the past few years) and a lot of people (many of them trans) worked together during the past two years to make it happen. it looks super fun and interesting and i can’t wait to watch it - it’s clear that it was made from a place of deep love for the characters as well as a desire to test boundaries in an age where fair use is increasingly threatened
also there’s a t4t joker4joker relationship in it
I noticed in the casting for the magnus protocal the symbols for Chester ,Augustus and Noris were a similar shape to the image clue that got deciphered in the ARG so I ran it through a image to binary translator then a binary to text translator. DO YOU KNOW WHAT THE TEXT FUCKING WAS .... QUESTION MARKS !!! Interestingly ( though this might be reaching) there were different numbers of question marks for each person .Chester had 12 question marks in diamonds( could this correspond to MAG 12 first aid ) Augustus had 7 question marks in diamonds ( MAG 7 the piper ? ) .Noris had one question mark in a diamond then two loose question marks followed by 4 in diamonds ( MAG 1and 4 as well as TMAGP 2 ??) .could there be meaning in this or am I just rambling???
