Ran'l McCoy's Final Months (1914)
Ran'l McCoy's final months (1914) #Appalachia #history #HatfieldMcCoyFeud #feuds
Oral history relating to Randolph “Ran’l” McCoy’s final years is scant. Most historians rely upon Truda Williams McCoy’s book The McCoys: Their Story (1976) for information about his life. Here are a few news items which may in some part be reliable that provides more information about Ran’l and his final months of life. Randolph McCoy Falls into Fireplace (January 9, 1914) “Randall McCoy, who…

Project Spotlight #4: The Ichorous Rot
Time for another project spotlight! Today, we're chatting with Sam from The Ichorous Rot.
Tell us a bit about yourself and your teammates!
@spinning-logic: Hey-o, I'm Charlie. I will be voice acting, sound editing, and assisting in some writing for our Podcast Jam entry! My first ever fiction podcast was Welcome to Night Vale (as it is for many, I'm sure), and my current favorite is pretty squarely tied with Malevolent and The Magnus Archives--though I'm truly loving Protocol too. I'm dipping my toes into hearing even more podcasts, like WOE.BEGONE and Old Gods of Appalachia. This is the first Podcast I've ever worked on, and hopefully what I learn from it will lead to creating more!
@moookar: Hi hi hello, I’m Mooo! I’m voice acting and writing. I’ve never worked on a podcast before TIR, but boy oh boy do I have lots of experience listening: WOE.BEGONE, Malevolent, and The Grotto are some of my current favorites, and I got started listening with The Magnus Archives and Dimension 20. Most of all, I’m just a fan of any speculative fiction I can get my hands on.
@gooboogy: I'm G! I do the music and some of the voice acting for The Ichorous Rot. I've been listening to audiobooks for ages and I listened to The Adventure Zone but only really started listening to audio dramas about a year ago with The Magnus Archives and Malevolent. It's not until I listened to WOE.BEGONE that I considered doing one myself! I don't have a fav podcast, but I have some fav characters such as Lucas Miller, Elias Bouchard, Kayne, and Ty Betteridge respectively. My fav genre is when Shit Gets Weird and I love it best when there's fucked up little blorbos :3
@fluxoid: Hey there! I'm Niall! I'll be doing some of the voice work for the Ichorous Rot. I've been listening to audio drama (and actual play) podcasts for over a decade now, starting with Welcome to Night Vale (of course). Current favorites are probably WOE.BEGONE and Midst, though I'm listening to many more. This is my first foray into the creative side of things and I'm excited to see where it goes!
@falloutcoys: Hello, I'm Sam! I'll be co-writing for The Ichorous Rot. I got started listening to WTNV in 2014 but really got into audio dramas when I picked up TMA in 2021. My current favorite pods have to be Midst,Not Quite Dead and WOE.BEGONE! This will be the first show I'm involved being published, but I'm writing my own passion project as well (@aboardtheichthyoid).
What's your podcast about?
Our project is set in 1880s West Virginia. Dr. Theodore Yates as he's overwhelmed in his duties as Janesville’s only doctor by a mysterious illness spreading through the town. We follow him through a combination of his own medical notes recorded on a wax cylinder, and snippets of audio following him and his best friend Alonzo as he tries to find a way to resolve The Ichorous Rot. It's a mystery that explores the effects of working class life and generational trauma through a supernatural lens.
What are you most excited about in this event?
This event has been such a great learning opportunity and way to collaborate with others! Everyone has had great ideas and we're able to bounce off each other and flesh out the story together, which is a really unique experience.
Any advice for other participants, or those on the fence about joining?
If you've been on the fence about joining, go for it! This is a really fun experience and it has the lowest possible stakes. Worst case scenario, you've met some great people and learned about producing a podcast. Best case scenario, you make an episode you're really proud of that grows into something much bigger.
While this team is no longer looking for new members, you can follow their project here on Tumblr @theichorousrot. Additionally, with a couple days left to sign up, there's still time to join the fun and work on a Podcast Jam project yourself - find out more information here!

Wikipedia Featured Article Poll, Biographies Edition. Summaries and links below the cut
Margaret Ives Abbott (June 15, 1878 – June 10, 1955) was an American amateur golfer. She was the first American woman to win an Olympic event: the women's golf tournament at the 1900 Summer Olympics.
Lilias Eveline Armstrong (29 September 1882 – 9 December 1937) was an English phonetician. She worked at University College London, where she attained the rank of reader. Armstrong is most known for her work on English intonation as well as the phonetics and tone of Somali and Kikuyu. Her book on English intonation, written with Ida C. Ward, was in print for 50 years. Armstrong also provided some of the first detailed descriptions of tone in Somali and Kikuyu.
Morris Berg (March 2, 1902 – May 29, 1972) was an American catcher and coach in Major League Baseball, who later served as a spy for the Office of Strategic Services during World War II. Although he played 15 seasons in the major leagues, almost entirely for four American League teams, Berg was never more than an average player and was better known for being "the brainiest guy in baseball." Casey Stengel once described Berg as "the strangest man ever to play baseball".
Edward Dando (c. 1803 – 28 August 1832) was a thief who came to public notice in Britain because of his unusual habit of overeating at food stalls and inns, and then revealing that he had no money to pay. Although the fare he consumed was varied, he was particularly fond of oysters, having once eaten 25 dozen of them with a loaf and a half of bread with butter.
Harold Francis Davidson (14 July 1875 – 30 July 1937), generally known as the Rector of Stiffkey, was a Church of England priest who in 1932, after a public scandal, was convicted of immorality by a church court and defrocked. Davidson strongly protested his innocence and to raise funds for his reinstatement campaign he exhibited himself in a barrel on the Blackpool seafront. He performed in other sideshows of a similar nature, and died after being attacked by a lion in whose cage he was appearing in a seaside spectacular.
Marjory Stoneman Douglas (April 7, 1890 – May 14, 1998) was an American journalist, author, women's suffrage advocate, and conservationist known for her staunch defense of the Everglades against efforts to drain it and reclaim land for development. Moving to Miami as a young woman to work for The Miami Herald, she became a freelance writer, producing over one hundred short stories that were published in popular magazines. Her most influential work was the book The Everglades: River of Grass (1947), which redefined the popular conception of the Everglades as a treasured river instead of a worthless swamp. Its impact has been compared to that of Rachel Carson's influential book Silent Spring (1962). Her books, stories, and journalism career brought her influence in Miami, enabling her to advance her causes.
George Went Hensley (May 2, 1881 – July 25, 1955) was an American Pentecostal minister best known for popularizing the practice of snake handling. A native of rural Appalachia, Hensley experienced a religious conversion around 1910: on the basis of his interpretation of scripture, he came to believe that the New Testament commanded all Christians to handle venomous snakes.
Margaret Alice Murray FSA Scot FRAI (13 July 1863 – 13 November 1963) was a British-Indian Egyptologist, archaeologist, anthropologist, historian, and folklorist who was born in India. The first woman to be appointed as a lecturer in archaeology in the United Kingdom, she worked at University College London (UCL) from 1898 to 1935. She served as president of the Folklore Society from 1953 to 1955, and published widely over the course of her career.
Dom Pedro Afonso (19 July 1848 – 10 January 1850) was the Prince Imperial and heir apparent to the throne of the Empire of Brazil. Born at the Palace of São Cristóvão in Rio de Janeiro, he was the second son and youngest child of Emperor Dom Pedro II and Dona Teresa Cristina of the Two Sicilies, and thus a member of the Brazilian branch of the House of Braganza. Pedro Afonso was seen as vital to the future viability of the monarchy, which had been put in jeopardy by the death of his older brother Dom Afonso almost three years earlier.
Elias Abraham Rosenberg (Hebrew: אליאס אברהם רוזנברג; Hawaiian: Eliaka Apelahama Loselabeka; c. 1810 – July 10, 1887) was a Jewish immigrant to the United States who, despite a questionable past, became a trusted friend and adviser of King Kalākaua of Hawaii. Regarded as eccentric, he lived in San Francisco in the 1880s and worked as a peddler selling illegal lottery tickets. In 1886, he traveled to Hawaii and performed as a fortune-teller. He came to Kalākaua's attention, and endeared himself to the king with favorable predictions about the future of Hawaii. Rosenberg received royal appointments to several positions: kahuna-kilokilo (royal soothsayer), customs appraiser, and guard. He was given lavish gifts by the king, but was mistrusted by other royal advisers and satirized in the Hawaiian press.

Because my cringe knows no bounds and I have multiple brain rotting fixations, here we go with another crossover au. I have no self control on these aus.
Persona 5 but the cast is made up of funky podcast people.
This crossover au also gives the added bonus of being a high school au.
The people I currently have for the thieves are:
Rita [REDACTED] from Penumbra Podcast
Jonathan Sims from The Magnus archives
Juno Steel from Penumbra podcast
Cecil from Welcome to Night Vale
Lup from the Adventure Zone
the Admiral from Magnus Archives
OW from Death by Dying
Daughter Dooley from Old Gods of Appalachia
And
Arthur Lester from Malevolent
Other characters that will show up are:
Pastor Jeff from Death by Dying
Elias Bouchard and Gertrude Robinson from Magnus Archives.
Indrid Cold from The Adventure Zone.
Plus more as the final cast isn't done yet.
I am still debating how much of their stuff from their podcasts I can include in this au and how much I can explain away as Persona stuff or just the setting being weird.
The setting will most likely be New York City as it checks off the requirements of big, strange enough that a weird cast would fit right in and has a subway system.
@screamingmadvoid and I made this au in @deathbydyingpod 's own discord server just to make it better.

For the audio drama asks : no.5 trope you like in audio dramas/or trope specific to audio dramas
thanks for asking!!
Trope you like in audio dramas/or trope specific to audio dramas: For tropes I like, I'm a huge fan of anything with "person gets A Little Too Interested in the supernatural Thing happening to them and ends up transformed into something supernatural" or So like, Jon from Magnus Archives (I quite literally rewound and relistened to the little "Elias... am I still human?" exchange like five times the first time I heard it), Leon Stamadis from Greater Boston (already im breaking the definition of the trope but look its the Vibe), Anna Limon from Mabel (I have complicated emotions about Mabel but good lord i devoured the first season), anyone fold-afflicted in Midst (especially super into what happens to REDACTED. tragically that episode is no longer up but if anyone wants to talk about the unreleased midst episodes message me immediately i love midst). Old Gods of Appalachia doesn't quite have this but it has tons of stories very adjacent that fit. (very fond of the Paradise story with Jack and Tommy Adkins "ah dammit im fond of this one". I just generally love Jack lmao)
I was thinking of something specific to audio dramas and the only thing I can think of is Zach Velenti having a cameo??

Not to be a hater but
I'm kinda confused? disappointed? baffled?by both the Old Gods of Appalachia ttrpg and the The Magnus Archives ttrpg using the Cypher System. Not only that, but they're being written and distributed by the same company (I don't know if the Cypher System is released for people to sell their own the way PbTA and BitD and BOB/NDNM are). Like I haven't listened to the first podcast, but isn't it also cosmic horror? I know nothing about the Cypher System but I'm worried there's too much overlap to make distinct and interesting games outside of the media-tie-in audience.
Also like, separately, the pitch for the TMA game doesn't entice me. Like, there's such a big world but the game takes place in the archives during the same time as the podcast? Not even the library or like ten years before? What's the point of playing it, because it doesn't seem like it would be Play To Find Out What Happens (we know what happens) or solving a mystery (we know the powers that be and the major cults and why the rituals don't work, and we know who Elias is and we know about the Not Them and-) and I hope it isn't just battle because that doesn't seem to fit at all.
I hope the Welcome to Night Vale game is good.
