Can we talk about how great Misato is? I feel like she doesn't get enough love since the Rei and Asuka waifu wars leave her out.

HI beloved mutual sorry I meant to respond to this sooner and then I became rapidly overwhelmed with . stuff. Anyhoo.

not only Can we talk about how great Misato is, i would go so far as to say we Must. Misato is a contender, I think, for the most complex and most deeply-characterized character in Neon Genesis Evangelion, and is basically inarguably the best-characterized adult / non-eva-pilot in the original series and EoE. She's easily my favorite character, and I think it's unfortunate that people tend to - as you said - write her off in favour of the more popular "waifus", or worse yet that people see her as shallow or malicious on account of misguided interpretations of her actions in EoE and the latter half of NGE.

I love Misato - not least because I relate to her more than I do any other character, but also because I genuinely think she's one of the best-written characters I've encoun tered, not only in the Eva franchise but really in film and television in general. She's, like, the #1 example of the brilliant and uniquely humanistic way Evangelion treats its characters as having - as Real People do -multiple desires and motivations, which sometimes contradict each other, subconscious influences which they may or may not be aware of, and genuine benevolence despite their flaws. I especially find the way Misato's desire-to-be-desired is sublimated into a pattern of behaviour that initially presents as disorder, instability, and hedonism to be an accurate - or at least, convincing - portrayal of the way subconscious desires manifest in unexpected ways.

Her relationships with Shinji, Asuka, Ritsuko, and Kaji are also GREAT, and while I've commented on them briefly elsewhere on this blog, as I make my way through my second viewing of NGE, it's especially apparent how intricately and realistically written they are. She's influenced, but not defined, by her memories of her father; influenced, but not defined, by her desire to both provide and be provided for; influenced, but not defined, by both her rage at the world and her love for the people living in it.

Sasha I've been away for like a week and I come back to claspecting Eva Pilots??? I love you, this is exactly the welcome I want.I personally think Shinji being an Heir of Hope works best, but I do see how doom would work too.

omg!!!!! ily2 I'm so glad you're enjoying it!! Hopefully I'll be able to pull together writeups on each of them as I finish my rewatch of the series, I've been in Eva-obsession-mode for like the past several weeks and I feel like Classpecting the Pilots feels like a perfect avenue for creating some more original content ^^^^w^^^^ <3 and yeah, I'm inclined to agree on Heir of Hope Shinji ; I definitely see him as a sort of conduit or vessel for Hope in the narrative of the original series, certainly.
