'He was struck by the mystery of her personality ...that this hair and head and person of the young woman below it....meant more to him than any other because it made up in some mysterious way just that key which unlocked his attention and desire and love."
Narration of Ross's thoughts on Demelza 'Demelza' (Internal book 1 chapter 10)

On the night Ross had sex with Elizabeth he is gone from Nampara for several hours. This is my story of what might have happened those missing hours unwritten in the fourth novel Warleggan. I borrow much from Winston Graham.
He lifted Elizabeth in his arms and carried her to the bed.
He put his lips against her neck. He smelled her hair and tasted her skin. He fumbled with his clothes and pushed her dress away. He tore her delicate underclothes. In his anger he was not gentle. She didn’t cry out when he took her. He took her hard and fast and in a few minutes it was over. Ross was breathing heavily as he fell to Elizabeth’s side. They lay still and did not speak. No words of love. Nor promises either. He was tired, so tired.
Ross slept and while he slept he dreamt of Demelza. She was in her garden and Jeremy was by her side. Demelza was scolding Jeremy for picking the blooms off of the daffodils. Turning to Ross she remarked on the lilac bush. “It needs trimming Ross.” She repeated his name. “Ross?” He awoke suddenly to the sound of his name. Where was he? The brown curtains, the dressing mirror, a rocking horse. He remembered now. He was in Elizabeth’s bedroom. Sitting up he saw her standing by a window. Her beauty was mesmeric. She heard his movement and turned and stared. She thought how his scar was very noticeable in the candlelight. Turning away from her, Ross rose from the bed and straightened his clothing. He turned back once again to look at her and she met his gaze with bitter hostility. The clock struck one accentuating the stillness of the night.
Ross left the bedroom. Elizabeth heard his footsteps as he went down the stairs. He stopped in the winter parlor where he had sat with Elizabeth weekly, ever since the death of Francis. The wind howled down the big fireplace and the old windows rattled. What he had done that night had brought Elizabeth very much down into the arena. He’d loved Elizabeth before he ever met Demelza. It was something fundamental, a constant attachment. He had wanted Elizabeth for years and now had experienced with her the most intimate act between a man and a woman. ‘The expense of spirit in a waste of shame.’ What was the rest? ‘Is lust in action.’ “‘You treat me like a slut’” She’d said. “‘It’s time you were so treated’” he’d said.
When he broke into Trenwith house a few hours ago he was searching for solutions. He had only succeeded in creating new problems. As Ross sat in the old parlor he thought he should return to Elizabeth to thrash the whole thing out but he did not know what to say and the impossibility of explaining himself was stopping him. He went outside and whistled for Darkie.
Demelza lie awake listening for Ross. Waiting to hear his footsteps and see him walk into their bedroom. She was sure he would tell her Elizabeth’s marriage would not go on. He would say he had only come home to get his things and he would return to Trenwith to live with Elizabeth. Demelza would leave and find work. Jeremy would stay with Ross and Jane would see to Jeremy. Demelza closed her eyes but sleep would not come.
When Ross left Trenwith he rode Darkie for miles far beyond Nampara. He thought of Demelza whom he had loved devotedly for six years and still did love. How could he explain the unexplainable to her? He began to think of their years together. The first years of love. And Julia. The happiness at her birth. The sadness at her death. His trial. Their poverty. The birth of Jeremy. Now he was in torment. He had committed adultery.
The moon that had lit his way was now lower in the sky. He turned Darkie around and began his journey back to Nampara. As he neared the beach he would bathe there before going home, to wash away the smell of Elizabeth. As he left the water the morning sky was becoming brighter, it must be nearly five. He walked up the meadow to the stable where he left Darkie. Cobbledick would see to Darkie. Ross would shave and change his clothes in the mining shed. By now the Gimmlets would be up and busy tending to the morning chores. He entered the house through the library and went into the parlor. Jane was there, setting the table for breakfast. A pitcher of milk, sugar basin, two plates, knives, forks, spoons, a butter dish. She looked up as he entered the parlor and in a peculiar voice asked if the mistress was awake. He replied quietly: “I think Demelza is asleep. Don’t wake her'' He listened and could hear Jeremy crowing in his cot. It was a favorite thing for them to lay together, side by side, and listen to Jeremy in the mornings. Jane brought his breakfast and he was nearly finished when he heard movement from their bedroom up stairs. Moments later he heard her voice in the kitchen and then he saw the door to the parlor open. Demelza came in and they looked at each other. At that moment he knew that she knew.

I don’t care who Ross Poldark loves more. Elizabeth or Demelza. I love Demelza enough for the both of us.

On Poldark tv show, why do you think Ross was so fixated with Eliz? Yes, her beauty was real, but he idealized, misjudged and fabricated who she really was. In the books, she is a pretty shallow vacuous character which the tv writer completely recreated. Yet on the show, he could never let her go, why? Next to Demelza's courage, strength, integrity, she pales in comparison.
Thanks @anonymous for the question! I think Debbie Horsfield et al felt that the love triangle made for good tv and didn't want to let that formula go, even when we viewers were getting a little tired of it. At a certain point in the novels, Winston Graham was also done with it and set aside for other plotlines. So it needed new fuel if it was going to continue past series 2, and DH provided this with loads of chance meetings and glances of Valentine, etc. The “does he or doesn’t he” dramatic tension around series Ross, wouldn't be believable or sellable if Elizabeth wasn’t at least a bit likable, thus her recreation as you called it. Perhaps also, the writing was also meant to update Elizabeth’s character, giving her more dimensions than book Elizabeth. But I think in doing this, DH lost sight of WG’s Demelza, who she also tried to update. Yes, her courage and strength is still there (and we are shown this time and again, speaking of formulas) but despite those admirable values, the scripts chip away at Demelza’s likeability. She harps and snips (and wears that horrible hat in S3…talk about character inconsistencies) and her Hugh storyline is about revenge and not the subtle and complicated web of human emotions and frailty that WG wrote about.
I wonder if, in the end, DH’s changes to these essential characters in order to force the love triangle, resulted in us viewers liking them all--Ross, Elizabeth, Demelza--a little less?

gotta say it's rather a curious irony that aidan was the only cast member to consistently defend liz and say "It's not her fault" in regards to the engagement, even coming from a perspective that preferred ross with demelza.
like just think about that. a whole MAN, who will never experience what it's like to be a woman a day in his life, was the main one defending liz from the overwhelming fanbase of WOMEN. if the male playing the MC is the one giving the compassion and sense for the female character above the female audience, it's time for you to step back and wonder if your hatred is justified or just misogyny with some envy on top.
