William Bowery

William Bowery may be more than one person. William Bowery was a mystery from Folklore’s release 24 July 2020 until the Long Pond Sessions were released on Disney+ on 25 November 2020. When Taylor first talked about it she was not at ease, here in the interview with Zane Lowe she has a pause when talking about Joe writing Exile (49:34)

In the Long Pond Sessions talking about Exile Taylor says Joe wrote the piano and male lyrics. Jack moves his foot and clarifies “Jesus, lyrics too?” Which Taylor agrees with, adding Joe has such a low voice.

For Betty Taylor said "I just heard Joe singing the entire fully formed chorus of Betty from another room yeah" and "I've written so many songs from a female's perspective of wanting a male apology that we decided to make it from a teenage boy's perspective apologizing after he loses the love of his life because he's been foolish" Jack: "allegedly" "no he's been foolish" Jack: "well, we don't know who William Bowery is". "He's a fool, he's been foolish, we wrote it I'm confirming."

to Zane Lowe Taylor (25 Mins) said she and Joe love songs, she said that Joe wrote the melodic structure and she wrote the lyrics.

"We always bonded over music and had the same musical tastes and he's always the person who's showing me songs by artists and then they become my favorite songs". Funny, Harry has tweeted 6 hours worth of song recommendations.

Also to Zane Lowe, she said "we wrote it exactly the same way we did exile where Joe wrote the piano [pause and sharp breath in] I based the vocal melody on the piano and we sent it to justin" "Joe had written the piano part so that it the tempo speeds up and it changes the music completely changes to a different tempo in the bridge" (Below, Joe says he can play 'piano pretty badly')

7 December 2023 - In Taylors Time Magazine Person of the year article she referenced a number of Harry's inspirations and dressed like them. She referred to Paul McCartney who inspired Sweet Nothing and Bob Dylan who was an influence on Betty.

The name

I think every British guy is probably related to a William, as both Harry and Joe are. Harry has stayed at the Bowery Hotel a lot, including the week he met and started dating Taylor. Joe was also reported to be pictured there in October 2016 with Taylor. Which is not that unusual, it's a cool hotel.

Harry's last pre-pandemic show was the Fine Line secret session on March 2 at the Bowery Ballroom when he also replaced “beechwood cafe” with “Bowery ballroom” in falling He has stayed at the Bowery Hotel in April 2012 (when first dating Taylor) and returned in 2013, 2014, 2017, 2019 and 2022. Harry's grandfathers middle name was William.

Joe told Kelly Clarkson "William, my great-grandfather, who I actually never met was a composer. He wrote a lot of classical music and he wrote a lot of film scores, and then Bowery is the area in New York that I spent a lot of time in when I first went over there.” Joe was reportedly pictured at the Bowery October 2016.

Song credits

William Bowery is still credited as the songwriter of 3 songs on Folklore: Exile, Betty & Champagne Problems. He's also credited as a writer on Coney Island, Evermore, and Sweet Nothing on Midnights.

In April 2021 Joe Alwyn was credited as a producer for 6 songs of Folklore, including 3 songs William Bowery is not a writer on. Joe has no credits on Evermore and Midnights.

19 May 2022 - Joe went on Kelly Clarkson to talk William Bowery, he looks down and blinks a lot when speaking.

After this Joe looked mad in the VMAs and walk before Midnights release and not seen again

21 October 2022 - Midnights released with Sweet Nothing, Joe doesn't seem to have been mentioned by Taylor or her team.

Always playing instruments

To Zane Lowe Taylor said, while discussing William Bowery:

"He's always just playing instruments and he doesn't do it in a strategic ‘I’m writing a song right now’ thing he's always done that”

However, even after Folklore Joe said this on playing instruments:

Saying, “I like music, and I played a bit of guitar awfully in a school band when I was 12.” and “I can play piano pretty badly, but never with the intent of, ‘Right, it’s time for my jazz-fusion album.'”

Harry has spoken about the importance of constantly picking up instruments, has hunted down unique guitars and a Dulcimer for Fine Line. In 2013 was taking piano lessons while touring with One Direction, now he tours with a Piano on tour to write on. Like the 10 minute ballad he wrote for the last LOT show.

Sweet nothing

Sweet nothing could be about Paul and Linda McCartney.

Taylor liked this old post with it the day she released you’re losing me and announced it was written 12 December 2021. The post links sweet nothing to a Paul McCartney Quote about Linda. Harry has referenced Paul and Linda’s collaboration album Ram many times, long before the WB songs:

In his another man mix tape in 2017

Paul also interviewed Harry or Another Man and gave him advice on going solo. And Sweet Creature's melody has an homage to Paul's Blackbird.

Paul and Taylor also interviewed each other for Rolling Stone, it is fantastic interview, after Folklore. Interestingly they talk about pseudonyms and Taylor doesn't mention Joe or William Bowery. But does talk about writing under Nils Sjöberg.

"A pseudonym comes in is when you still have a love for making the work and you don’t want the work to become overshadowed by this thing that’s been built around you, based on what people know about you. And that’s when it’s really fun to create fake names and write under them." "I remembered always hearing that when Prince wrote “Manic Monday,” they didn’t reveal it for a couple of months."

Paul said his pseudonym was Fireman, which is referenced in the video for Willow. The phrasing of 'thing that is built around you' is really interesting. Joe does not have much built around him in terms of public persona, and writing together in the pandemic is remarkable, but not inconsistent with a public persona.

Bon Iver

Taylor said she hoped Bon Iver would do the project because ‘they are huge fans’ and Joe has a low voice. Justin Vernon and Harry Styles sound similar. So much so critics pointed out that that Fine Line has similarity to Bon Iver songs, Roslyn for example. This mash up also highlights this:

If you liked Olivia Atwater's Regency Faerie Tales, definitely give The Witchwood Knot a try. It had a lot of the same magic.

When the Game Was War filled the void left by Winning Time. These tales of the magic of 80s basketball align with the one time in my life I had interest in the sport. It has been fun revisiting that time, and WTGWW provided a nice deep dive into elements and players that Winning Time was unable to explore in its short run.

Writing Your Second Draft

The infamous second draft. Allegedly it’s supposed to be slightly easier to get through than it’s little brother the terrible first draft. I normally don’t feel very good about any of my WIPs until at least the third draft, and honesty, in some aspects writing the second draft can be more difficult than first drafts. At least for me, first drafts are harder to write, but second drafts feel like they have all of these expectations on them. Making it even harder, there’s so much advice out there about writing first drafts, but not nearly as much, imo, out there about writing second drafts. So, here are a few tips that helped me writing the second drafts of my novels. 

Did You Take A Nice Long Break? 

I think we’ve all heard of the advice that you need to take a nice long break after you finish your first draft. Some people say a week or two is enough, but I finished the first draft of my current wip in September of 2020 and I started the second draft in December/January. Taking that long of a break worked really well for me. I didn’t write anything related to that wip during that time, but I did write other things sparingly. I focused mostly on reading, and I rewatched both of the tv shows that inspired my wip (Game of Thrones and the Tudors) to remind me why I wanted to write the story so much in the first place. Oftentimes, your first draft will be a hot mess. It’s good to take a nice long break and remember why you started to write it before you come back to it with fresh eyes and a rested mind. Taking longer breaks will also allow you to see things from a different angle. I had a birthday in that time period, and I think growing up a little definitely allowed me to become a better writer. 

What Was Past Elle Thinking?

No, seriously, what was she thinking? I ask myself this question almost daily, and not just with things relating to writing, unfortunately. Reading through first drafts can be a little bit of a humbling experience, and by a little bit, I mean a lot a bit. First drafts are like chaotic little toddlers, and a second draft is supposed to turn them into like a semi-coherent five year old, not completely perfect, but way more understandable. I think a lot of people get discouraged during the second draft process because it often requires a lot of changes from the first draft. First drafts just get your ideas down. They create some semblance of a  beginning, middle, and end. From the first draft to the second draft, I cut whole chapters, deleted characters, and almost 10,000 words which I was really upset about, but it’s also completely normal. Going through the whole thing the first time can be a little overwhelming. Take a little bit more of a break if you feel yourself getting too overwhelmed. But, don’t be afraid to make the big changes and improvements that your story may need. That’s what second drafts are for.

Confusing Continuity Errors

It’s the way I have a semi-major plot point revolving around a character being allergic to almonds, and she’s literally eating almonds the first we meet her. I also have described a character’s eye color at least seven different ways in three chapters. Those type of continuity errors are extremely common in first drafts, and unfortunately, in some published books as well. Whole editors have the job to go through books about to be published in order to make sure there aren’t any glaring continuity errors. Before I even start changing anything in my first draft, I simply read through it with another blank Google doc on spilt screen. I write down anything that I personally find confusing, things that are just plain wrong, or contradicting facts or details that could lead to plot holes or continuity errors. That gives me a little bit of a gameplan before I start changing things, and it’s something relatively easy to start with. 

Hills Not Mountains

Going off of that: make a gameplan. Another reason I find people get discouraged is that they jump into their second draft without a clear goal in mind. Unfortunately, just making it better than your first draft isn’t a clear goal. It’s vague, and you’re bound to get frustrated that way. Breaking up your second draft edits into smaller hills instead of an 100k mountain, makes everything that much more feasible. For example, I knew that all of my fight scenes were extremely bad because as we’ve established, I’m not good at writing fight scenes. Starting out with all of those scenes gave me something clear to work on. After that I worked on making sure the plot and the climax went together because they absolutely did not. Setting smaller goals to address each element of my first draft definitely helped me divide and conquer all of the important parts of my story, so that they could come together in a cohesive way. Once all these elements have been solidified individually, you can piece them together in a way that makes your second draft feel more manageable.

Get Some Eyes On It

As terrifying and nerve-wracking as it can be, sometimes you just have to get some outside eyes on your work. Some people like to leave this to later drafts because I know my first drafts make it seem as though I can’t write, but I like to do it between all of my drafts. Especially between the first draft and the second draft because up until that point I have been the only person reading my work. Sometimes that can make us a little blind to certain issues in our writing. I have always been a character over plot reader, and I am most definitely a character over plot writer. I have a really hard time deleting character that need to go, and having someone else point out what I already know is true forced me to face the truth. I send my best friend almost all of my first drafts, and she sends me back a list of all the things she liked, she didn’t like, and things that confused her. I know my story, so sometimes I don’t see everything that’s confusing. Having outside eyes from someone who doesn’t know my story as well as I do, always helps immensely. 

Elle’s Bonus Tip: Retype It

Retyping your story is incredibly helpful, imo. It takes forever, but to me it’s always been worth it. I take my first draft and open up a blank Google doc in spilt screen, then I go and retype every single word. Okay, not every single word, if I know I really like a scene, I’ll copy paste it. But, I go and retype almost every single word. It forces me to get back to the basics of my story, and it forces me to notice every little thing. I would almost consider it akin to reading an essay or something aloud before you submit it. It forces you to kind of see the story naked for lack of a better word, and seeing your story this way forces you to look at elements you normally wouldn’t see even with close editing. It’s definitely not for everyone because it takes forever, and it’s a massive undertaking, but I definitely would recommend it if you can!

I've read the William Bowery theories posted but, I guess my question is this: if it were Harry, why would Joe agree to cover for his girlfriend writing songs with her ex boyfriend?

Taylor has been direct and clear that Joe is William Bowery in the Long Pond session, to Zane Lowe and Grammy speech. I try to only highlight where WB and Harry are similar.

Also, I assume Taylor wrote the lyrics, WB wrote a melody on piano which Jack produced into the song. I don't think WB should detract from Taylor and Jack's work.

Exile, Betty and Coney Island are the most surprising to me, Joe doesn't seem so enlightened he'd write songs about Harry, which, to me, those are. Taylor has spoken about Betty being a male apology, which would also be hollow from a later boyfriend.

While filming Hwarang, V became friends with the other actors from the cast, notably Park Seojoon and Choi Wooshik. Together with more friends of theirs, namely Peakboy and Park Hyungsik, they formed the Wooga family. They’ve regurlarly shared about their informal meetings on SNS.    İzleme listemde bir süre yerini koruduktan sonra sırası gelen bu dizide hep senarist hem de oyuncular ile ilk kez tanıştık. Senaristinde oyuncularında daha önce isim yapmış işleri olsa da ben dizileri güncel çıkış tarihleri ile  izlemediğim için tersten tanışıyorum. Birçok yazıda Goblin dizisi ile kıyaslanıp, çift olarak da çok eleştiri almışlar. Ben Goblin’i sonradan izlediğim için çok yadırgamadım. Belki de benim yaptığım doğru sıralamadır.

Dizinin konusuna gelecek olursak, bir miktar tane tane anlatacağım. O nedenle tane tane okuyalım. Dizi birbiri ile aynı zaman düzleminde ilerleyen iki paralel evreni anlatıyor. Dizinin konusunu anlatırken zaman yolculuğu diyenler olmuş, şeytan peşinde koşuluyor denilmiş, dünyamıza giren kötü ruh evrenleri yok ediyor, bla bla bla… Dizinin konusu iki paralel evren. Bu kadar. Paralel evrenlerden birisi, Kora krallığı, burada modern bir krallık söz konusu, Joseon dönemi gibi değil yani. 1994 yılında kral kardeşi Lee Lim( Lee Jung-Jin ) tarafından öldürülüyor. Kralın oğlu Lee Gon (Lee Min-Ho) ’u da öldürüp büyülü bir flütün sahibi olacakken, gizemli biri tarafından veliaht prens kurtarılıyor. Kurtaran kişi ortadan kaybolurken geride bir kadın polis kimlik kartı bırakıyor. Flüt ikiye bölünüyor. Lee Lim flütün yarısı ile ortadan kayboluyor. Lee Gon çocuk yaşta tahta çıkıyor. Ve 25 yıl geçiyor.

İkinci dünya ise bildiğimiz Kore Cumhuriyeti. Jeong Tae Eul( Kim Go-Eun ) bu dünyada yaşayan bir dedektif ve yıllar önce diğer dünyada düşen kimliğin sahibidir. Şiddet suçları biriminde görev yapmaktadır.

Bir gün Lee Gon elinde flütün yarısı ile ormanda gizemli bir kapı açar ve atının üzerinde Kore Cumhuriyetine geçer. Bu noktada hikaye aslında başlamış olsa da, bu şekilde konusunu net anlatan bir ön yazı olmadığı için ilk 4 bölüm kim kimdir, ne olmaktadır diye kafalar karışık gizem bulutları içerisinde izliyorsunuz. Bende biri bana bunu bu kadar basit bir şekilde anlatsın isterdim diziye başlamadan önce.

Fantastik bir dizi olmasının yanı sıra içine biraz bilimkurgu ekleyelim, matematik serpiştirelim, paralel evren olsun, izafiyet teorisini de koyduk mu oldu bu iş mantığı ile ilerlenmiş. Flüt efsanesini dahil ederek masallara da göz kırpmışlar. Alice ve kral Arthur masallarına el sallamışlar. Ben ki zaman ile ilgili dizilerde çok geriliyorum. Anlamaya çalıştıkça daha büyük bir bilinmezin içine düştüğüm için inanılmaz geriliyorum. Keza bu dizide de daha önce okuduğumuz bildiğimiz kavramlar üzerinden gidersek kesinlikle paradoks olması gereken durumlar söz konusuydu. Flütü bahane ederek geçiştirdiler ama paradoks, paradokstur. Ayıp.

Konu başlarda inanılmaz yavaş ilerliyordu. Dediğim gibi bir şeylerin oturup anlaşılabilmesi için 4 bölüm geçirmek gerekti. Lee Gon küçükken geçirdiği suikast girişiminde Tae Eul’un kimlik kartını aldığı için yıllar boyunca onu aramış, onu beklemiş. Eee, Tae Eul ? Onun bir şeyden haberi yok ki! Tabi burada nasıl şuan aynı yaştalar diyerek hikayeye zamanda yolculuk da karışıyor. Bu noktada kadının adama olan aşkı biraz havada kalıyor. Ne ara tanıdın bildin sevdin de tutkuyla bağlandın, çok ilginç. Sonrasında yaşadıkları aralarında olan sahneler rahatsız etmedi ama çok hızlı aşama atlamaları biraz saçma geldi.

Dizinin çekimleri, sahneler, kurgular çok güzeldi. Zaman mevzusu dışında senaryo elle tutulur kaliteli bir işti. Goblin daha önce aynı senarist tarafından yazılmış ve yayınlanmış. Sırası ile izleyenlerle bu konuda hem fikirim ki, Goblin’i geçememiş. Başka dizilerde de dikkatimi çeken bir diğer konuda bölüm sonlarında damdan düşer gibi bir sahne ile şaşırtıp bitiriyordu. Sonraki bölümde ise bölüm başında 10 dk o sahneye nasıl geldiklerini gösterip gizemi çözüyorlar. Yani bölüm sonu bir gizem yaratıp, bir sonrakinin başında çözüyorlar. İlginç bir teknik, fena da bulmuyorum açıkçası. İzleyici dikkatini belli bir seviyede tutmayı başarıyor.

Söylemeden geçemeyeceğim; o ürün yerleştirme nedir Allah aşkına. Bütün dizilerde var evet ama bu sefer dizi bütçesi yetmedi herhalde ki ürün yerleştirmesi bitmek bilmedi. Dizi sonrası tavuk satışı inanılmaz fırlamış zaten. Tavuğu, vitamini, cilt bakımı derken bir de üzerine uzun uzun karakterlerde sohbet ettiler dizi boyunca. O kora krallığında yüzlerine taktıkları bakım aleti neymiş diye ben bile düşündüm. Her seferinde çıtır tavuk mu yesek dedim. Amaçlarına ulaştılar yani helal olsun.

Son olarak, iki oyuncudan bahsetmek istiyorum ve kapanış. Biri başrol kızımız, Kim Go-Eun. Adamcağıza olan aşkı ilk etapta bize geçmese de bunun tamamen senaryo kaynaklı olduğuna inanıyorum. Zira diğer dünyada var olan kendisi Luna karakterini oynarken gördüğümde takdir ettim. Başka bir karaktere bürünmüştü adeta, açıp aynı oyuncu mu acaba diye kontrol ettim. Diğer bahsetmek istediğim oyuncu ise kralın sağ kolu ‘kırılmaz kılıç’ rolü ile karşımıza çıkan Woo Do-Hwan. Tek kelime ile inanılmazdı. Burada aynı kişinin oynadığını bariz olarak görüyorsunuz ama inanamıyorsunuz. Kıyafetinden saçına aksanından konuşma şekline kadar birbirine zıt iki karakteri o kadar hakkıyla sergiliyor ki, ağzım açık kaldı. Kesinlikle dizideki favori oyuncum Woo Do-Hwan, karakter olarak ise Jo Eun-Sup oldu.

Biz ki ne diziler izlemiş, kağıt kalemle senaryo yapısını çözmeye çalışıp fizik kurallarını baştan çalışmış insanlarız. Bu dizideki havada kalan kavramlara o kadarda takılacak değiliz.

Un film de Todd Haynes, avec Natalie Portman, Julianne Moore, Charles Melton…

Un film troublant qui va bien au-delà du scandale.

Pour son nouveau long-métrage, Todd Haynes s’est approprié un fait divers qui avait mis les États-Unis en émoi. Il met en scène une ancienne enseignante, coupable d’avoir eu une relation avec un très jeune élève, face à l’actrice qui doit l’incarner à l’écran.

Vous trouverez ci-après la critique, en vrai un cumul de plusieurs critiques américaines, que nous n’avons pas pu (voulu) réduire tant elle collait parfaitement à ce que nous avons pensé du film. L’analyse est un peu longue, certes, mais au moins vous aurez un aperçu complet de ce qui vous attend si vous allez voir ce film. Evidemment, l’essentiel n’est pas dévoilé.

Elles se présentent l’une comme sincère, l’autre comme recherchant la vérité. Pourtant, « May December retrace l’histoire de deux femmes drapées dans le mensonge. Leurs destins se croisent lorsque la première, Gracie (Julianne Moore) reçoit la visite de la seconde, Elizabeth (Natalie Portman), l’actrice qui doit l’incarner à l’écran », résume The New York Times.

Le quotidien plante ainsi le décor de « May December » : « Gracie vit dans une grande villa côtière à Savannah, en Géorgie, avec son mari, Joe (Charles Melton), leurs jumeaux adolescents et leurs deux chiens. » Leur aînée a déjà quitté le nid familial pour poursuivre ses études.

La différence d’âge entre Gracie (59 ans) et Joe (36) est immédiatement notable, mais le couple a surtout fait parler de lui dans le passé : leur histoire a commencé deux décennies auparavant, alors que Joe n’était encore qu’un jeune collégien et que Gracie était l’une de ses enseignantes.

« La suite de cette relation – une liaison qui défraie la chronique, un procès pour viol sur mineur, un accouchement en prison – s’inspire dans les grandes lignes de l’histoire de Mary Kay Letourneau, enseignante de l’État de Washington qui, en 1997, a été reconnue coupable de violences sexuelles sur Vili Fualaau, l’un de ses élèves, alors âgé de 12 ans, avec qui elle entretenait une relation », signale le Los Angeles Times. L’affaire avait fait couler beaucoup d’encre à l’époque. « Des années plus tard, une fois Letourneau sortie de prison, les deux amants se sont mariés et ont vécu ensemble pendant quatorze ans. L’enseignante est décédée en 2020 [un an après leur séparation], des suites d’un cancer. »

Le film dans le film

Si, à l’instar d’une grande partie de la presse américaine, les deux quotidiens applaudissent le long-métrage, c’est qu’il propose « une approche brillamment étoffée de ce fait divers, portée par trois têtes d’affiche formidables, une indéniable maîtrise narrative et des touches d’humour parfaitement déroutantes, qui font entrer tout en douceur le spectateur dans l’intrigue », détaille Manohla Dargis dans le New York Times.

Car toute la force de l’intrigue repose sur la mise en abyme qu’analyse Justin Chang dans le Los Angeles Times. « Plus que la chronique d’un scandale, May December est la chronique de la chronique d’un scandale. ». « Le film remet en question et va jusqu’à piétiner ses propres promesses en ne cédant pas aux attentes des spectateurs qui chercheraient un film sensationnaliste sur un fait divers tout droit sorti de la presse à scandale. »

Un trio d’acteurs remarquables

Sans surprise, la presse spécialisée salue particulièrement la qualité du jeu du duo d’actrices. Pour David Rooney, dans The Hollywood Reporter, c’est même la principale raison pour laquelle le film retient l’attention. « L’extraordinaire monologue prononcé par Natalie Portman devant son miroir, en particulier, vaut le détour. Les deux actrices livrent une performance captivante, en donnant vie à des personnages ambivalents, dévoilant chaque fois de nouvelles facettes. »

Julianne Moore n’est en effet pas en reste, assure Peter Debruge dans Variety, l’autre grand magazine de référence de l’industrie hollywoodienne. Elle est « troublante de vraisemblance dans son rôle de femme se décrivant comme ‘naïve’, et pourtant très soucieuse de la façon dont elle sera représentée à l’écran – et capable de se montrer subtilement manipulatrice pour parvenir à ses fins ».

Cela étant, il serait injuste de limiter le film à un duo. « Si Gracie et Elizabeth s’imposent comme les personnages phare de la première moitié du film, l’intrigue se recentre ensuite avec une grande habileté sur Joe, à mesure que le scénario gagne en gravité, en profondeur, et en tristesse », souligne le New York Times. « Moore et Portman sont certes formidables, mais c’est la prestation tourmentée de Charles Melton qui donne au film toute sa force émotionnelle, de plus en plus marquée à mesure que progresse l’intrigue. »

Laisser place aux interprétations

C’est peut-être justement dans le personnage de Joe que réside une des clés de « May December », qui laisse place à l’analyse dès son titre (une expression imagée utilisée aux États-Unis pour décrire un couple avec une différence d’âge, avec une référence aux saisons de la vie). Repartant du cas réel de Vili Fualaau, le site Vox avance qu’« aujourd’hui, Mary Kay Letourneau serait considérée, à juste titre, comme une prédatrice ayant soigneusement amadoué sa proie pendant des années. Mais dans les années 1990, les médias décrivaient cette relation comme un amour contrarié, laissant l’enseignante imposer sa version des faits. »
