A total of 262 MPs voted on Tuesday in favour of a legal amendment that will allow migrants to apply for temporary residence permits if they are already working or have a job offer in Greece, under certain conditions.
Minister of Migration and Asylum Dimitris Kairidis told parliament on Monday that claims that the new amendment legalises migrants are wrong “because it does not give a right to permanent residence and citizenship, as they do for example in Germany, it just gives the right to legally work to people who have been here for many years and…. can work”.
Among the 32 MPs voting against was former Prime Minister Antonis Samaras, a member of the ruling New Democracy party.
Samaras has said that the legal change will turn Greece “into a beacon for attracting illegal immigrants”.
The three Greek far-right parties, Niki, Spartans and Elliniki Lysi, also voted against the legal amendment.
The Asylum and Migration and Labour and Social Affairs ministries have insisted that the amendment does not make migrants legal residents of Greece.
The ministries also said that the amendment does not give any rights to non-legal residents in Greece other than access to the labour market for long-term residents who arrived before November 30, 2023, under strict terms and conditions.
It also does not give the right to family reunification, permanent residence or citizenship, while the permits will depend on individual migrants’ work situations.

Found this article and even though I knew ancient Greek names were really popular in the USA to name your children I am not surprised it's more popular than than others ( can you guess why 😅)
So yeah there's another proof of obsession in western civilization about greek culture.
Well, I wouldn’t call that obsession. Foreign influences in name giving is not a weird or uncommon thing at all for ages. What I found interesting is the names given. I am posting here the stats from the article.

Who’s to tell them that Troy, as the name of a city, is a feminine name? 😅 Thumbs up for Orion and Atlas though, they are fantastic names.
Off topic, I love the name Freyja.

An example of Usians respecting Greek culture. An American artist that made a comic about the Greek revolution of 1821 and he really was inspired by his Greek friend, but what is remarkable is that he took a lot of time and research to make an appropriate representation.
Because like he admitted. In Us they are taught the basics which only Hellenic greek period, greek gods, myths. After that movies like mamma Mia, troy etc which are innacurate and also cover a tiny part of our history
Such amazing news, and great effort on his part! The Greek audience seemed to like it as well, and to be fair, I can understand why! I hope we see more great media from him regarding our history!

This week's newsletter from AthensLive is out:     The end of an era and a new one rising
*    An unprecedented result in Greece’s contemporary history  *    Who is who: Spartiates & Niki  *    End of an era
- are the main headlines to be found inside this highly informative weekly must-read from and about Greece. The New Democracy party won the country’s parliamentary elections, with voters giving Kyriakos Mitsotakis 40.55% of the vote and another four-year term as prime minister. He left the main opposition SYRIZA far behind with a meager 17.84%. Communist party KKE got 7.7%, PASOK/KINAL 11.85%. All shades of far-right were elected in the Greek Parliament: neo-nazi far right (Spartiates, the Trojan Horse of Golden Dawn - 4.64%), Christian far-right (Niki - 3.7%). Also, Elliniki Lysi (4.44%), had threatened media with legal action (Opens in a new window) should we call it ‘far-right’, so we won’t write it is. The eighth party elected was leader-centered Plefsi Eleftherias, which does not even have a proper manifesto. Yanis Varoufakis’s DiEM25 failed to enter the Parliament as it did not achieve the 3% threshold. A third of the new Greek parliament (100 seats out of 300) is center to the left. Two-thirds (192 seats) is neoliberal right to ultra far right.
It cannot be recommended strongly enough to read and share this week's updates on the events and developments in Greece here:

Kyriakos Mitsotakis, leader of the conservative New Democracy party, is set to win a second term as prime minister and a majority in parliament, the preliminary results of Sunday’s elections show.
In the second round of the parliamentary election, held after no political party assumed the task of forming a government after the first round, on May 21, Mitsotakis looks likely to secure a second four-year mandate.
“Citizens sent not only a message of continuity on the path we set out four years ago but a strong mandate. I thank them and am grateful to the Greek men and women for their trust,” Mitsotakis said.
“I never promise miracles, but I assure you that I will remain faithful to my national duty,” he added.
After 96.49 per cent of the total votes were counted, Mitsotakis’s New Democracy won 40,55 per cent of the votes, almost twice as much as the main opposition SYRIZA party, lead by Alexis Tsipras’s, which won 17.84 per cent. SYRIZA looks set to have performed worse than in the last elections, compared to the 20 per cent it secured in May.
“The election result is obviously negative for us. But I believe the election result is mainly negative for society and democracy. The nomination of three far-right parties in the parliament…combined with the majority of Mitsotakis’ right, is a negative development,” said Tsipras adding that he puts himself in the judgment of SYRIZA.
The second round of elections was held under an enhanced proportional representation system, with the first party getting bonus seats in parliament. In the first round, held under a simple proportional system, neither leader accepted the President’s mandate to form a coalition government.
The entry into parliament of three far-right parties has sparked concern among analysis and the media.
Kyriakos Velopoulos’s Elliniki Lysi won 4.45 per cent of votes.
Two new far-right parties, Niki – which made its first appearance in the May elections – with close relations to the Orthodox Church, won 3.70 per cent of the votes.
The second new party, the Spartiates [Spartans], which is supported by Ilias Kasidiaris, the imprisoned former member of the far-right banned party Golden Dawn, won 4.69 per cent.
A few days before the elections, the Supreme Court banned Kasidiaris’s independent candidacy. Previously, they blocked his far-right National Party – Greeks from the first round of elections.
Vassilis Stigas, Spartans’s leader, thanked Kasidiaris because “he was the fuel that gave us the impetus to reach this point”.
When asked on TV if the Spartans are the continuation of Golden Dawn, a representative of the party answered: “Of course not.”
The Greek parliament in February passed a new law that excludes parties whose leaders have been convicted of serious crimes from elections.
BIRN’s analysis, “In Greece, Deep Uncertainty over Outcome of Election”, highlighted the problematic nature of the specific law, which was not passed by a non-revising parliament [revision of the Constitution], but by an ordinary parliamentary vote.
Kasidiaris, despite serving a 13-year prison sentence for his leading role in Golden Dawn, which was branded a criminal organization under a court ruling in 2020, has an active presence on social media through third parties.
The prison’s disciplinary board ruled in May that he didn’t violate any law: “The disciplinary offense of insubordination was not proved, as it did not appear that he violated the lawful orders of the staff during the conversations in question,” it said.

ERT made mamy mistakes with Eurovision but in terms of bringing new stories it seems promising. Like this list looks like Greek productions are finally investing in good quality stories finally.
The comedy with the prisoners seems pretty promising!
