Why You Should Check It Out:

This was written as the most generous gift for me, and it is glorious.

This story is such a marvelous conception, the way it settles into the corners of canon and shows how Minerva's life unfolds, with the beautiful bittersweetness that Eldritcher manage to instill in all their stories.

Their inventive ideas about magic and how it interacts with characters' souls and lives are absolutely genius.

The idea of love for an ailing Abraxas as motivating Riddle's actions is genius, and so different from most of the conceptions we have of Voldemort. I adore that canon Dumbledore was so very wrong about his inability to understand love being his great handicap. The irony the author has given that stance here is absolutely delicious.

Same goes for Minerva's defining, unrequited love for Alastor.

And the idea of how Hogwarts Castle's magic and the Headmaster's work in symbiosis is absolutely canon in my head now -- so inventive and wonderful.

Why You Should Check It Out:

This fic puts you firmly and frighteningly inside Alastor Moody's head as he copes with the horrors of being locked in that bloody trunk for months, and what goes on there isn't pretty, but it helps him cope. As does Minerva McGonagall, once she stops castigating herself for a moment of indiscretion that ends up torturing them both. This Minerva and Alastor are recognizably in-character, but they're shown dealing with a very odd situation, and it brings out things we don't often see from either. The way the relationship between them develops is beautifully drawn: painful, tender, funny. Read it if you want to gasp, cry, and laugh, all in the space of a few paragraphs.

OK, even if I didn’t have a soft spot for student!Minerva/Albus, I’d still have loved this because of the (I feel like I say this about all the Beholder fics, but it’s twoo, it’s twoo!) wonderful characterizations. Especially Albus, in all his flawed glory–here, as a man who is a genius in many arenas, but a bit thick when it comes to love. Add in fluid sexuality, and I’m a syrupy mess on the floor.

The war was never just about killing Voldemort. Excerpts from letters between members of the Order of the Phoenix’s Committee to Promote and Restore Democracy to Wizarding Britain.

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that “the will of the people shall be the basis of the authority of government". The government that we see in the Harry Potter series is weak and undemocratic. We are unclear on what exactly the limits and powers of the Wizengamot are and if any of its members are elected. What is the role of Chief Warlock? We do know that government officials are easily and often influenced and bought off by individuals like Lucius Malfoy.

While the Ministry of Magic is the largest employer of Wizarding Britain, political literacy and participation in the democratic process seem incredibly low. Which is frustrating since the population of Wizarding Britain is so small.

According to the United Nations, establishing respect for the rule of law is fundamental to achieving a durable peace in the aftermath of conflict. After the war, Kingsley oversees the implementation of much-needed reforms. What are those reforms? Who proposed those reforms? What role did Elphias Doge, Special Advisor to the Wizengamot, play in The Order?

Through letters from 1995 - 1998, members of The Order of The Phoenix set out to tackle the issue of creating a more sustainable peace by creating proposals for government reform.

In a series full of parallels and convergences, do you think Elphias Doge, if he appears in future movies, might be Albus's mirror of Bunty, feelings wise?

I definitely think so. Both Elphias and Bunty will be people with a crush to someone who sees them as a friend. They have similar interest in some ways. They work together to an extent (Albus was part of the Wizengamot for several years and Elphias was a special advisor for the Wizengamot).

I can definitely see Albus, who has so many people appreciating him and looking up to him, seeing Elphias' feelings the same way he sees the devotions of Hagrid for example, and being absolutely oblivious to his friend's feelings.

Also, I think that the Elphias we meet, being older than Bunty is, will have quietly resigned. But it's still beautiful to think that, like her, Elphias falls into the 'sometimes you just know' category when it comes to his feelings for Albus. Moreover, considering that Bunty IS perceptive of Newt's feelings for Tina, I wonder if Elphias is the same but has the grace to not bring it up and to never hold Albus' feelings for Gellert against Albus' morality.

Do you think Elphias Doge knew Albus was gay? Or anyone besides Aberforth and Minerva?

I MEAN my personal headcanon is that Elphias had a massive crush on Albus and they were each other's first kiss, and that he carried a torch for Albus basically forever.

Soooo I think they were sort of both thinking something might happen when they went on their grand tour of Europe. And then Albus met Gellert instead, and felt something so overwhelmingly stronger, he could never consider dating someone that he thought was "pretty all right." And Elphias was a great friend who doesn't get jealous about not having his feelings reciprocated (hooray for not being a Nice Guy), and they stayed great friends and had a lot of fun adventures their whole lives.

I really hope Elphias met a nice man who loved him someday!! He doesn't seem to have lived an unfulfilling life.

Elphias Doodles!

After @/applepielifestuff ‘s post about them I got inspired and decided to make some art of them (and make up some headcanons)

So, I headcanon Elphias as gender fluid and ace because yes

I feel like them and Albus were close when they were in school, but many people misinterpreted their relationship as the “popular friend and some random person who worships them”.

I headcanon them as more emotionally intelligent and empathetic than Albus so they would often have to explain to Albus why he shouldn’t do what he does etc (like,,manipulating people etc). And that they were the person to bring Albus back to earth.

I feel like they knew that their friend was gay before he realised that. And that at some point they tried kissing but ended up laughing hysterically

And they realised that gellert seems off even from Albus’ letters but he wouldn’t listen (it’s the “I warned you”)

I had never considered the possibility that Elphias was aware of the romance with Grindelwald, before you mentioned it! In the books he was so reverent of Albus and so quick to say that every criticism of him was pure slander that I thought maybe his viewpoint was supposed to be seen as a little naive. But it'd be so lovely if he did know, yet it never made him think less of Albus. In a way it was easier for Bunty, because Tina's a nice person. Gellert must've been a tougher pill to swallow.

Elphias DOES seem that way and Aberforth even mentions something very cheeky about how he idealizes Albus.

But I think there's room for a more nuances approach. Elphias knew Albus as a child. He knew that when blood-supremacists had tried to embrace him as the son of a man who was imprisoned for attacking muggles, Albus did not want to be considered a muggle-hater and never discriminated muggleborns. Even if he didn't know the full story about the Dumbledores, he knew enough to be able to see WHY Albus would want the Statute of Secracy and the wizard's hiding to be over, without the humanitarian idea of him that he believed in being tainted. He had enough information to see the humanity and the slight naivety in Albus' choice.

So I think it would be very interesting to see Elphias as someone who's actually perceptive, and ultimately much more than meets the eye.

Silence settles between them as her voice trails off, heavy as a winter duvet. Intertwining his hands, Elphias peers at Alice from under his bushy brows. What she is asking of him is simple enough to do — considering the situation, who wouldn't want to hear reassuring words from a friend ? 

Yet, Elphias hesitates visibly. He opens his mouth, starts to say ❝ Alice... ❞ and, when nothing else follows, he closes his mouth, sighing through his nose. It's not that simple — truth be told.

Indeed, in any other situation he would gladly reassure a friend, perhaps adding a wide smile that would do nothing else but emphasize the wrinkles around his mouth. But now ? ❝ Alice, ❞ again, Elphias starts with her name, leaning ever so slightly forward. ❝ Everything is going to be okay, ❞ now, when he doesn't even believe his own words, it feels like he just told Alice an obvious lie. ❝ Everything, ❞ it's this that he decides to repeat, thinking that, by voicing it with more certainty, it would make even himself believe it to be true.
