Feyre going to visit Elucien in the Day Court years and years from now and…
Tumblr media
They reside in a large, but somehow very homey manor. When Feyre winnows to the entrance, she’s immediately overcome by the warm, buttery sunlight and the large sprawling garden that seems to wrap around the entire house. Various windows are open, ferns and ivy and all manner of potted greenery tumble out of them as though the home they’ve made for themselves can hardly contain Elain’s green thumb.
It’s Elain who answers the door and ushers Feyre in, and it never fails to surprise her just how much the Day Court suits her sister. Her blush pink gown is made of light, elegant fabric and cinched at her waist by a gold belt. None of the fuss of the gowns that hindered her gardening with all of the beauty of the dresses that had made her the belle of every ball.
Elain says she’s set up tea in the back garden. Lucien is at the local market with their children and will join them soon. While they sip tea among the daffodils and the daisies Elain proudly tells her sister which flowers each of her children have planted, and how poor Sorrell kills most everything he touches.
About an hour later Feyre and Elain can hear the front door open and then the excited voices of Elucien’s brood as their father leads them inside.
“My hands are sticky!”
“A tragedy for the ages, my darling. Lily, you can help Poppy wash them, can’t you? That’s my favorite eldest daughter.”
“I’m your only eldest daughter. Come along, Lily.”
“I’m still hungry, papa!”
“Of course you are, Aster, I’d expect nothing less. I bet your mother has some snacks out in the garden. Aunt Feyre should be there.”
“Papa, can you make me some soup?”
“Papa said he’d help me with the bow today!”
“Jasmine, I’ll make you soup — I know, not too hot. Sorrell, we can still do the bow but I need to get Basil into bed before Im soaked in drool.”
Feyre’s brows are high as she listens to Lucien patiently and diplomatically address each need from within the house. He may be Helion’s heir, a charming courtier and a talented emissary, but he is a natural father. Elain just sips her tea with a small smile, like the sound of Lucien interacting with their children is her favorite melody. Little Aster, who looks every bit his father, comes running out into the garden on skinny legs and tackles his Aunt Feyre with a hug before diving into the cucumber sandwiches.
One by one, everyone but baby Basil comes and visits Feyre. Sorrell and Jasmine depart to go “explore” the woods. Poppy and Lily excuse themselves to make flowers crowns. Aster has some carrots he swears are ready to pick.
Finally, Lucien joins them, and Feyre thinks to herself how much domesticity suits Lucien. The Autumn and Spring Court Attire seemed to stifle him and while the Day Court attire his father wears isn’t exactly his style either, he’s somehow found a balance that suits him. A comfortable white linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up and sage colored trousers tucked into riding boots, his fiery hair down but tied back at the sides. He looks dashing decked out in finery, but when Elain rises to kiss him and Feyre sees them together, she can’t imagine him in any other fashion but this. After centuries of clawing his way through darkness, he is in full bloom. Casual and stylish but practical and comfortable.
Feyre stands to embrace him, and she finds it’s hard to recall the time that there had been a wedge between them. The time they were both healing and seeing one another had only reminded them of their shared trauma. Now he plants a kiss on the top of her head and when he sits and joins them for tea, he asks all about Nyx and Andromeda.
The rest of the afternoon passes in a similar fashion with the three adults enjoying the never emptying tea pot, but every twenty minutes one of Elucien’s brood will approach the table. Each time, Lucien drops everything and leans forward to meet them at eye level. He answers every question, listens to every story. Before they resume their activities they always go to Elain for a kiss.
“You’ve both been fortunate to have been blessed with so many children,” Feyre smiles over her tea cup. “Any plans for a seventh?”
Elain sets down her tea cup and saucer with a clatter, her lips in a faint but exhausted smile as she gives her mate a knowing look. Feyre turns her attention to Lucien who grins at Elain from across the table.
“She’s cut me off,” Lucien says, russet eye glinting with amusement. “Give me a few centuries. I bet she’ll go for number seven.”
“You and your father wish,” snorts Elain.
Feyre almost balks at her sister’s flat tone, Lucien has brought out such fire in her.
“I can be very persuasive, lady…”
Elain rolls her eyes. “Oh please.”
Lucien opens his mouth to retort again, but then his metal eye whirs and his lips turn up in a wry smile. “He’s up.”
Feyre realizes that he means Basil. His metal eye somehow imparted this to him. Elain moves to stand, but Lucien is on his feet sooner, motioning for her to remain seated.
“No, enjoy your time with Feyre, lady,” he says, leaning over the table kissing the crown of her head. “I’ll see to him.”
“You’ve tended to them all day,” Elain frowns.
But Lucien is already walking backwards towards the house, rolling his sleeves up a little higher. “And I expect a substantial reward for such acts of heroism tonight.”
Feyre blinks and bites back a smile at Elain’s flushed face. Lucien disappears into the manor.
“To think,” Feyre says, unable to keep the smugness out of her tone, “there was a time I had to elbow you to get you to invite him over.”
Elain laughs softly. “I always knew it would be him. I didn’t need you to elbow me. I was just… taking my time.” She gestures to the garden, the manor. “I saw the eternity he would give me, but I wanted to wait. I wasn’t ready for all of this. For them.”
Feyre knows by ‘them’ she means their family. She doesn’t blame Elain for waiting. Her life here in the Day Court was quite an alteration to when she’d first been Made, quite the commitment. One she now loves.
“To have such certainty must’ve been a blessing and a curse,” Feyre murmurs. “But you always knew?”
Elain looks up at the second story window belonging to the nursery. “Of course. I could hear his heart.”

okay but listen,,, listen,,, are you listening,,, I cannot stop thinking about how the cauldron loves elain and its just... SO interesting to me that the MOMENT she pops out from the depths she's given a mate. there were any number of people there that could have been "assigned" to her ( if ur picking up what I'm putting down lmao ) the cauldron peered into her soul and saw all of her wants and needs and gifted her with the person that embodied all of those things and then some.
I will never stop thinking about this actually.

Chances are Lucien’s gonna have another baby sibling from both of his parents… and it makes me so happy.
It’s pretty likely. Helion and Loa were robbed of the chance to raise their firstborn together, they’re sure as hell gonna start the babymaking again in the near future, I’m convinced. Also, they have some great genes. Lucien just happened like that sooo…

Idk why but this baby looks like it could be Elucien's daughter or baby Elain and for some reason I found it important enough to share...

This is giving me bratty Elain vibes

I loved all of what Sarah highlighted in her interview today and I'll elaborate a bit especially on the romance part:
In Maas’ fantasy worlds, love interests often exist as fated “mates,” with invisible strings between them that are powerful and often poetic. Readers can see the literary metaphors, like complementary powers between two characters. But other times, there are no metaphors, with their connection initially seeming random.
She's too attached to the mate trope and I like that she gives us different cases and scenarios for it, otherwise it'll be boring.
“Sometimes, I will write a scene with two characters that I’ve planned for them to get together, and then they have no …” She shakes her head slightly at me. “It’s like holding two dolls and being like, now kiss! And they won’t. … And then sometimes a different character will walk in and they will just” — she snaps.
I yelled at this part because it's as if she plucked the scene from Azriel's bonus chapter and used it as an example. Those parallels between Elain and Gwyn are intentional. It doesn't mean Elain is bad it's just their dynamic doesn't work as a couple and it was obvious to the author. I know she didn't specify who this was about but like, come on, who tried to kiss and which character showed up in a bonus chapter after that depressing scene and gave a glimmer of hope?
“It feels like magic in a way where, as much as I tried to plot out things years in advance, I let my characters guide a story. And they usually wind up with the people that they need to be with and who offer them the most growth and joy.”
I love this so much and allow me to speak about my favorite ship and its because the snippets we saw of Az and Gwyn together especially in the bonus chapter brought out a lighter version of Az. His scenes with Gwyn were light-hearted and the bonus chapter ends on a hopeful note for them. It's hard to deny that connection between them whether you theorize she's luring him or they're mates, those theories wouldn't exist if she had no ties to him (she's in his own chapter like come on).
I go the philosophical route with my next question: We’re talking about fate here, but at what point is a character the agent of their own fate? What happens if someone rejects their mate? (Listen, if I were Fae and I didn’t like my mate, whatever God chose for me is not my business.)
People are jumping the gun and assume this example is set to be Elucien but... we have Helion and Lady of Autumn likely being an example of a tragic rejected mates story (if you read ACOWAR and their history it's obvious they're mates). Maybe it's Mor and Eris and that's the secret that ties them to each other. We have other characters from other series too.
For a convincing mate rejection story in my opinion, it needs more than one book or it's a case that we see with side characters where we can see their history and the long-term implications of a rejected bond.
It's too easy of a story to have one person's central conflict be the words "no I reject you" and they're done. Again, this is not exclusive to ACOTAR but also her other series.
“That’s something I find to be very interesting,” she replies. “What if the forces that be put you with the wrong person? Or what if you just decide, eh, I’m not interested. … There’s a lot to explore within the concept of mates and your agency about it.
The concept of agency is something many readers in the fandom discussed especially when it comes to mating bonds and there were arguments on (would Rhys fell for Feyre if she wasn't his mate or would have Cassian fell for Nesta if she wasn't his mate). We know that some mates don't work out but stay together because their dynamic is unhealthy (Rhys's and Tamlin's parents). We got examples of a loveless mating bond already.
We also saw that Nesta didn't immediately accept the term "mate" because it would mean cutting off her last tether with humanity. It's not a matter of "you're my mate" "yes I'll be with you", the dynamic between the mated couple is important to explore.
“I’m not going to say if I am exploring it in future books or not,” she continues, “but it definitely offers a wealth of things to explore with this concept of freewill and what is true love. Is it something that’s destined? Or is it something that you make? Is it both?”
This part aligns with what I think about Elucien. We never had a mated pairing who knew they were mates but are not in love with each other. Every mated couple found out they're mates when they were already in love.
Can a destined love turn into true love? Or do you settle for a destined love without love being in the equation. Love wasn't in the equation for Rhys's parents, but love was the equation for Feysand and Nessian. Elucien was left unexplored for a reason and both Elain and Lucien view each other by label "mate", they didn't have a chance to get to know each other. So it's going to be very interesting to see them navigate their feelings for each other despite the mating bond.
I didn't expect her to elaborate a lot on this but I love that she did and I hope in future interviews she gives us more good bits about her writing and examples of the decisions she took for some characters and couples.
Didn't expect this post to be long but happy reading! I'm still reeling from HOFAS 🥲

It’s hard to believe that Elain will be the main character or the main focus of an elucien book…when 90% of the theories I’ve seen posted by eluciens all revolve around Lucien and not Elain.
For all this talk of Elain needing to leave the NC and her family to “find herself” and become her own person, it’s weird that most of the plot points of an elucien book center Lucien and not Elain.
Elain has to leave the Night Court so that she can live with Lucien in the Day Court or Autumn Court because those are the ones that he’s most connected to. Not her.
Elain has to leave her family which she loves so that she can live with Lucien’s family and help heal all of those broken bonds apparently. Elain just needs to forget her family because sometimes sisters just don’t get along or need to be close. But yet somehow, Lucien needs to heal the rift with him and Eris. And then Elain needs to help him through the shock of learning Helion and not Beron is his father. So basically fuck Elain’s family, Lucien’s is more important
Elain needs to leave her friends Nuala and Cerridwen who played a pivotal part in her healing. So that she can hang out with Lucien’s friends the BOE. One of which includes a man who played a very big part in her trauma.
The rejected mating bond that’s been hinted at has nothing to do with Elain. It has to do with Lucien’s parents, Helion and Lady Autumn. A rejected mate bond would be a huge storyline for any book but it’s going to be a side plot with the side characters involved in Lucien’s storyline. And then Elain can pat his hand and comfort him through all the angst after the Maury Povich reveal that Beron is in fact not the father.
Who cares about Elain being a seer or a spy when she can play the socialite trophy wife to Lucien the grand Emissary and High Lord. She can mingle and plan parties and be pretty and charming at balls because apparently she’s a giant extrovert (which we have not seen).
For all this discourse around an Elriel book being bad for Elain because Azriel would be the focus and not Elain, I have yet to see a plot for an elucien book that centers on Elain and not Lucien. So I find it hard to believe they actually care about Elain, when she seems like nothing more than a means to an end to give the poor ginger cinammon roll Lucien the story and ending they think he deserves.

Jane Austen's most romantic letter, if it had been written by Lucien Vanserra (Persuasion x Elucien)
Or what would happen if Lucien overheard Elain have a conversation about the bond? And what if he wrote a gut-wrenching love confession in said letter? Inspired by literature's most infamously romantic letter ever written.
Some text is directly taken from Chapter 23 of Persuasion by Jane Austen.
"We will write the letter to Helion we were talking of, Rhysand, now, if you will give me materials."
Materials were at hand, on a separate table; Lucien went to it, and nearly turning his back to the rest of the Inner Circle, was engrossed by writing.
Elain eyed him carefully, studying the leather strap that held back his long, molten red hair. Clearing her throat, she found Nesta across the room by the open window of the parlor as they were both on the outskirts of the Inner Circle’s political discussions. It was a respectable distance from where Lucien was writing at the desk, although still somewhat nearby.
“I have a question for you,” Nesta turned to her younger sister, face like stone. “One that I have been thinking about for some time. What do you think our parents would have thought about the mating bond?”
With wide, brown eyes Elain sucked in her breath. It was an unexpected question, but also a familiar one. For her thoughts had circled the very same doubts and insecurities that plagued her sister. “Well,” Elain wrung her hands nervously. “Mother would have adored Feyre’s, being mated to a High Lord after all. But if she didn’t like the outcome, she would have demanded a way to break it or alter it for her own advantage.”
Nesta’s wicked grin revealed an agreement, knowing full well their mother would have been furious at her marriage and bond with an Illyrian general, and her matching status as a Valkyrie now.
“As for father, well, I suppose, based on what he discussed with me in the past—there is a small chance he would have been disappointed.” Her voice dropped in both volume and confidence, barely escaping as a whisper passed her lips. As if she was instinctually afraid someone would hear, perhaps someone sitting across the room.
Elain felt compelled to explain further. “He always told me the most important thing to find in a husband was true love. That I should not settle for anyone less than a kind, loyal heart who loves every part of me, because that kind of love will never leave you.”
Out of the corner of her eye, Nesta regarded her with furrowed eyebrows. “And you do not believe that a mating bond can also encompass those very same feelings? That same love?”
She considered her question carefully, chewing on her bottom lip. “Perhaps it can, but how can you know it is true? That it is not just the manifestation of desire in its place?” It was always that doubt, that fear, that crept into the darkest crevices of her heart. For as long as those shadows existed, she could not bring herself closer to her own mate, afraid she would be unable to determine the answer. In return, she was afraid of what she could possibly want or feel for him.
“I wish I could make you comprehend, Elain.” Nesta frowned, “I wish I could properly convey the feeling of how your soul glows when your mate loves you—”
Before Nesta could continue, Elain found herself apologizing with a hand on her elbow. “Gods forbid that I should undervalue the love and bond you share with Cassian, or Feyre’s either for that matter. It is a reminder that bonds can be true and constant attachments.”
She could not immediately have uttered another sentence; her heart was too full, her breath too much oppressed.
“You’re a good sister,” Nesta replied affectionately and Elain wonder if her sister could see past her tenderness, if anyone could witness the mask of kindness that Elain could so easily put on for the sake of others to hide her own feelings. The conversation faded as Feyre now joined them with Nyx on her hip, a welcome distraction for Elain as the three of them turned to him.
“Ready to go?” Cassian’s voice eventually broke through the hum of the room, an echo across the parlor. “We need to meet with Vassa and Jurian.” Lucien was folding up a letter in great haste, and either could not or would not answer fully.
“Yes,” he said. “I will winnow us. I will be ready in half a minute.”
Cassian left to wait for him at the front door, and Lucien, having sealed his letter with great rapidity, was indeed ready, with a hurried and agitated air, as if he was greatly impatient to leave. Elain could not understand it. Cassian had given her a smile and shoulder a warm squeeze as he left the room, but from Lucien himself, not a single word. He had passed out of the room without a look.
Elain moved closer to the table where he had been writing, when suddenly she heard footsteps returning; the door opened and it was Lucien. He gave her a polite nod and gestured to where he had forgotten his gloves, instantly crossing the room to the desk. He drew out a letter from under the scattered papers, placed it before Elain with eyes glowing in longing fixed on her, and hastily collected his gloves, once again out of the room before anyone could even be aware he had been in it at all.
The interaction was almost beyond expression. The letter, with strokes of pen that were hardly legibly, as if rushed, read “Elain Archeron,” was evidently the one which he had been folding so hastily. While he had supposedly been writing to Helion, he had also been addressing her. On the contents of that letter depended all which this world could do for her. Anything was possible. Sinking into the chair which he had occupied, succeeding to the very spot where he had leaned and written, her eyes devoured the following words:
“I can listen no longer in silence. I must speak to you by such means as are within my reach. You pierce my soul. I am half agony, half hope. Tell me not that I am too late, that such precious feelings are gone for ever. I offer myself to you again with a heart even more your own than when this bond first snapped, two and a half years ago. Dare not say that a mate’s love cannot be true, that his love is influenced by our tether. I have loved another, but none like you. Unjust I may have been, distant and resentful I have been, but never inconstant. You alone have brought me to Velaris. For you alone, I think and plan. Have you not seen this? Can you fail to have understood my wishes? I had not waited even these past few days after Solstice, could I have read your feelings, as I think you must have penetrated mine, I can hardly write. I am every instant hearing something which overpowers me. You sink your voice, but I can distinguish your true thoughts through the bond when they would be lost on others. Too good, too excellent female! You do us justice, indeed. You do believe that there is true attachment and constancy among males. Believe it to be most fervent, most undeviating in your mate,  L.V. I must go, uncertain of my fate; but I shall return hither, or follow the court, as soon as possible. A word, a look, will be enough to decide whether I enter the Night Court this evening or never again.”
Such a letter was not to be soon recovered from.

Sarah made her mind when she mated Elain and Lucien in ACOMAF. She would not fumble her mates, they are one of the most important aspects of her stories. If one mating bond story goes to hell then all of them lose their allure.
People love to say we don’t know enough about rejected mates, but if it was that easy to reject your mate, then why is it painted as this otherworldly pull in all of the other mated pairs? If it was so easy to stay platonic with a mate, why haven’t we even seen any of those even when they were not fit to be together (Rhys’ parents). Why do we have canon text indicating that males often lose their minds over a rejection and females carry it throughout their entire lives, if it is that easy?
I want to also point out that Sarah would not use Lucien of all the characters to make this plot. It does not make sense for him to go through this. This character has never been handed anything his whole life. He has only known loss and pain and disappointment. He doesn’t even have a home. He has had the big event that retconned his life, the woman he loved murdered while he watched. He thought she was his mate. He has lived centuries without hope. Suddenly getting a mate he never saw coming was the one thing that made him open his eyes and give himself the hope he had lost, even if he still feels guilty.
It makes no sense for his mate to reject him without even knowing him. He has done everything right. Sarah could have made him an entitled prick for us to be okay with Elain rejecting him later and she did the complete opposite.
Anyway it is 2024 and Elucien are still mates. It is set in stone.

i’ve been sitting on my thoughts for so long but i just have to get this off my chest. i don’t like to yuck ppls yum so if you like e/riel pls scroll away nd keep having your fun it’s not my problem. however some of y’all can get mean as HELL and as an elucien i have to get this off my chest. (also warning for gwynriels i’m with y’all i defend y’all here however i do go in a bit on az in this so fair warning). i truly have no idea why e/riels cling so hard to the azriel bonus chapter in acosf because that chapter, more than literally anything else in the series, proved to me that e/riel is absolutely NOT going to be endgame. let me explain:
1. it is explicitly stated that azriel did not think of his relationship with elain outside of a sexual nature. i think some ppl get kinda annoyingly puritanical when trying to make this point when it’s like 100% certain lucien had sexual thoughts of elain too. the point isn’t the thoughts themselves. the difference here is the explicit mention that he didn’t consider anything with her outside of that.
2. the point above ^ is further exacerbated by the fact that az did not give a flying fuck if he killed elain’s MATE. even if elain hasn’t accepted the bond, it would still be extremely painful for her based on what we’ve seen with rhys, feyre, and even rhys’s parents (who weren’t good for each other, yet we saw how rhys’s dad lost it when she died). now of course us lucien lovers know damn well he would never in a million years call a blood duel to try to claim elain (and fuck u rhys for saying that, i usually have your back but come ON you are not the only male who can respect their mate’s autonomy). but az doesn’t know that!? in fact seems to agree with rhys that he could. ppl argue on who would win that fight — my opinion hinges 100% on if powers are fully unleashed but that’s not the point at all. no matter WHO wins, elain is going to feel responsible for someone’s death. of course it wouldn’t be her fault if men decided to be fucking stupid, but with the little we know about elain shows that she would feel so guilty if that happened. but azriel doesn’t seem to give af that anyone fighting to the death over her is the last thing she would ever want. not only did az not think of elain outside his fantasies and therefore not fully care for her, but he doesn’t seem to even KNOW elain in this chapter. now, i could go in on this in acosf as a whole. but i’m keeping it to this chapter alone.
3. and further on THAT point, az doesn’t really give any reasoning on his interest in elain outside of this insane “three brothers/three sisters” thing he fully pulled out of his ass. tbh i almost thing this is sjm’s way of addressing the fan theories on that. now i get it to some extent from az’s pov — seeing his brothers happy with these sisters must fuck with your head after you’d all been bachelors together for 500 years. especially considering how he’s felt unworthy of love his whole life and this seems to support that insecurity of his. i get that it makes him feel ostracized from them, and that he’s now an outlier not being with an archeron. i get that. i do. i sympathize with him here. however that does not change the fact that he isn’t speaking of elain like she’s her own individual here — hell he fully calls her “the other”. i think part of this conversation was him being frazzled, i give him a bit more grace than some do (tho he pissed me off BAD in this scene), but we were fully in this man’s head. did he give us a full reason why he liked elain besides his brother’s mates and his sexual thoughts?? they would’ve at least crossed his mind when rhys was grilling them if sjm was trying to set up her next romance here. as it is, we have literally nothing to imply azriel actually likes elain herself and not the idea of being closer with his brothers.
4. az has kinda a habit of ignoring the reality of the women he’s attracted to in some way. he has his own version of them in his head that he puts on a pedestal. now i could do a whole psych eval on this man and how he thinks he’s unworthy of love and therefore only allows himself to have feelings for women he knows/thinks he can’t have. but to focus on this chapter alone, my points above ^ about how he doesn’t really think of elain outside his fantasies/bringing him closer to his brothers and not really understanding her pretty much wraps it up there. i mean he even talks about how he thinks his scarred hands don’t belong on her because she’s so perfect in his eyes. that’s not love, that’s obsession and it’s unhealthy. he clearly thinks himself below elain and ignores that she has her own flaws too.
5. aaaand i saved the biggest for (almost) last….. GWYN. this is a genuine GENUINE question. why in the fucking hell. would sjm make half the chapter focusing on az & gwyn if she was teasing e/riel. like that makes no sense. not to be annoying and mention chekhov's gun but that idea applies to relationships too. i’m sorry but she couldn’t be more explicit about her future romances. you could argue “oh well it’s because there’s gonna be a love triangle”. y’all. elain has. elain has a mate. there already IS a love triangle. there was absolutely no reason for her to bring gwyn into this chapter other than her preparing us for a future relationship, literally none. especially with all the romantic subtext (hell not even subtext, just TEXT). gwyn getting him to talk about himself so easily when he’s so quiet usually, him taking the idea of making her happy and he “buried the image down deep, where it GLOWED QUIETLY” (which SCREAMS mating bond to me but even if it’s not it’s clearly something he cherishes deeply), the SHADOWSINGERS SHADOWS SANG FOR HER!?
6. the fucking necklace regifting. oh it’s bad. OHHH ITS BAD. when the girls realize it’s gonna be SO messy but im hoping sjm doesn’t go the stupid cat fight route bc neither of them did anything wrong. az did. i’m sorry i’m dunking on him so much in this post i rlly don’t hate him i just think he needs like decades of therapy (which tbf don’t we all) which i unfortunately don’t think sjm is going to give him before giving him his romance. but even the biggest azriel lovers have to admit that this was insanity. a few points on it here. first, if it’s so easily regiftable then it couldn’t have been that well thought out in regards to elain. say what you will about lucien’s gifts, even argue that he gave her jewelry too. but elain was actually shown wearing pearls. az’s gift seemed shallow to me — it was something pretty, and elain’s pretty, and it had a flower, and elain gardens. it’s clear lucien put SO much more thought into his gifts, whether he succeeded or not (which i need to remind y’all — we still don’t know. maybe she liked the gifts maybe she didn’t, but regardless she acted the way she did bc of her feelings about the bond, not the gift). and azriel has spent so much more time with elain than lucien has. if that necklace really felt like elain to him, he could’ve kept it or returned it. but nope. buddy gave it to a whole other girl bc he could easily associate it with someone else. he clearly felt some special pull towards gwyn too, going out of his way to give it to her. he had ONE meaningful conversation with her. i already discussed the quote earlier that makes me think mating bond personally. but no matter what, him giving her the same gift he gave someone he was pursuing romantically is a clear sign of what’s to come (and probably a setup for some sort of drama that i don’t think im mentally ready for).
so there we have it! why i think that the bonus chapter thoroughly proves that e/riel is not going to be endgame. i honestly think it’s possible they might be a thing for a minute (tho i could also see this being the closing of that chapter), but i don’t think it’s going to last. sjm just gave us too many blatant hints that elain and az would NOT work together long term, and that azriel in particular is more suited for someone else. i might’ve missed some points bc there is SO much that goes down in this tiny chapter so lmk if there’s other stuff you picked up on!

Genuine question, but why do you want Elucien together if they aren’t in love? They aren’t currently attracted to each other right now. They can’t even be in the same room.
Is it just the potential? Or promise of the mating bond or something?
Because I shipped Elucien too when they were declared mates. But by ACOFAS, I didn’t understand why suddenly SJM decided to have them not even interact. If they ever have a conversation I might jump back over to elucien, but so far-there’s nothing between them.
And we know there can be mates that aren’t good romantic pairings. Like Rhys’s parents. All signs are currently pointing to the fact that Elucien is also one of the incompatible pairs.
Idk I just don’t understand why I should keep rooting for them if there hasn’t been any development on the page? Am I missing something??
Genuine question: Why would I want to read a love story that starts with the couple already being in love? Were Claire and Jamie from Outlander in love at the start or was she in love with and married to another man? Where she married Jamie and STILL wasn't in love with him? Were Daphne and Simon in love at the start of Bridgerton? Was he not FORCED to marry her even when he didn't want to ever marry or have children? Were Elizabeth and Darcy infatuated with one another at the start of their book? You have no canon evidence that Elain isn't attracted to Lucien. The only canon evidence we have of anything is that Elain didn't want a male or a mate. Just like Nesta didn't want a mate in her book. But guess what? Those things change. Those are just hurdles for a character to overcome. By the end of her book Nesta proudly called Cassian her mate but she got into a fight with him over it at first. Yes Elain "shrinks back" from Lucien but why are you defaulting to one possible answer "she's not attracted to him"? When you look at SJMs style of writing, isn't it more likely that Elain withdraws from Lucien because he sees her too clearly and that scares her? When Feyre tells us that Elain has even Az beat for secret keeping, isn't it possible that Lucien is the one person who can see through the secrets Elain hides and it's intimidating? Because he might see that she's not as fine and content as she'd have the others believe? Something she wants them to keep believing as she's possibly worried about disappointing them? (Rhys's words). You're right, there are couples who might not be right for one another, evidenced by the example you provided with Rhys's parents. Rhys's father was cold and vicious. Does that sound like Lucien? Rhys's father immediately stole Rhys's mother away the second the bond snapped and married her that night. Does that sound like what Lucien did with Elain? Rhys's mother pleaded with his father to ban wing clipping but he refused. Has Elain asked anything of Lucien that he was unwilling to give her? I like Elucien because neither has to be anyone different if they end up together. Elain doesn't have to struggle with cruelty bothering her as she would if she ended up with a torturer. She doesn't have to hide in the shadows as she would if she ended up with Az. She would get to enjoy balls and party and socializing in a way she wouldn't if her partner was Az who prefers his alone time. She'd get to share her love of nature with someone who the author also confirms is happiest in nature. I like the thought of Elucien because it's so clearly written on the wall that they are right for one another though it's normal that Elain isn't ready to face that yet as she's still processing trauma and figuring out who she is as a fae female. Or maybe she does realize it and it's what scares her, she already suffered rejection and a broken heart from Graysen, I don't imagine she's prepared to run into someone else's arms who has the power to hurt her. My guess is SJM hasn't had them interact because the second Elain and Lucien have a real conversation, it's over for both of them. Their hearts will be gone, flying into the palms of the other. It's more exciting to read about all that in their own POVs rather than someone else's. You don't have to root for anyone you don't like. Hell, Elucien could be endgame and you still don't need to root for them. But I grow a little tired of people acting clueless as to why Elucien's still love the idea of them together and why it's really not a problem that they aren't talking right now.

The "two bonds" theory
Ship o'hoi!! Long post ahead!!!
The theory (made by e/riels) claims that there are two bonds: "true bonds" and "cauldron" bonds.
The difference primarely lies in the "snapping moment".
The "true bond" aka "true mates/love", the bond snapping when a couple first looks at each other, doesn't happen. It takes time, they are attracted and drawn to each other first.
The "cauldron bond" aka "breeding bond" (created by the asteri for powerful offsprings allegedly) the bond snaps into place instantly. The male turns possessive and territorial to ensure hanky panky. The mates end up hating each other as the instincts to claim their mate dies down over time.
*I had so much fun with this! And with each day, we are one step closer to acotar news. So I felt the need to respond (?) to this before the next couple is announced! :)
They compared feysand, nessian, e/riel and elucien. They also touched on Rhys' parents, but there is too little information about them to really use it. I will however be using some moriel quotes.
I'll be comparing them all to elucien :D
Let's take a look at feysand. First of all, when Rhys first met Feyre she was human and Rhys had an inkling, a pull if you will. He didn't want to let her go, but had to. He wanted to kill the males who were forcing themselves upon her. Because of the bond. It didn't snap into place... until she was turned fae.
"(...) and had begun to fade into the nearest shadow when he went rigid. His eyes locked on mine, wide and wild, and his nostrils flared. Shock - pure shock flashed across his features at whatever he saw on my face, and he stumbled back a step. Actually stumbled."
"But Elain was staring over Nesta's shoulder. At Lucien - whose face she had finally taken in. Dark brown eyes met one eye of russet and one of metal."
"His face was pale as death as he stared at Elain."
This was Feyre and Rhys' first meeting after she was turned fae. Same goes for Elain and Lucien. The bond snapped instantly for the males. Both were shocked.
Speaking of first meetings... (note we have Feyre's POV in both instances, we do not know what Lucien nor Elain were thinking*.)
"The night seemed to press in closer around him, made me hesitate to speak - made me want to run in the other direction."
"I took a step back."
"(...) I backed up a step."
"As Lucien took off his jacket, kneeling before Elain. She cringed away from the coat, from him-"
They had both been in terrifying situations (Elain in the cauldron and Feyre threatened by the lesser faeries) and their mates were still strangers to them. Even if Rhys scared them away, even if Lucien tried to cover and warm her with his jacket. They drew distance.
In acomaf, Rhys talks about his experience with the bond between them.
"And this beautiful, wonderful thing that had come into my life, this gift from the Cauldron..." hmmmm🤨
"When I went to leave you... I think transforming you into Fae made the bond lock into place permanently. I'd known it existed, but it hit me then - hit me so strong that I panicked."
Being turned into a fae will make the bond more detectable, according to Rhys. It hit him strongly even when he already knew of its existence.
Lucien was repeatedly reaching for Elain as she was dragged towards the cauldron. So much so that the king of Hybern had to cast whatever spell he used on him.
"Lucien staggered a step forward as Elain was gripped between two guards and hoisted up."
"'That is enough.' Lucien surged for Elain, for the Cauldron."
"Elain remaind shuddering on the ground, Lucien's coat draped around her. She did not look at the Cauldron behind her (...)"
"Water poured forth, Lucien hoisting Elain in his arms and out of the way."
He freed himself after and went to Elain. Nesta was next in line, and although Lucien was free to roam, his entire focus was on Elain and her safety. This was before the bond snapped into place.
"(...) I hadn't seen her (Mor) in fifty years, and my first words to her were, 'She's my mate.'"
Rhys would have blurted that out to Feyre had he not winnowed. Sounds familiar?
"Lucien's hands slackened at his sides. His voice broke as he whispered to Elain, 'You're my mate'."
It is clarely a shock no matter what. But it must have been even worse for Lucien, as he had always believed Jesminda to be his mate. He had not had the opportunity to spend time with Elain before she was turned, to have established at least an inkling to their bond. A tragic, yet hopeful realization. He had little time to process this, given the situation they were in.
"I felt your pain, and sadness, and lonliness (...)"
"And from the devestation on his face, I knew he'd heard every word. Seen and heard and felt the hollowness and despair radiating from her."
They can both feel and sense emotions through the bond. It is a very intimate thing, though Feyre had no idea at the time. Elain might, and she could feel incredibly exposed to Lucien, knowing that it's difficult to hide true feelings and thoughts from him.
"Elain only shrank further into herself, no trace of the newfound boldness to be seen."
Although we don't know exactly what is happening, Elain could surely feel Lucien's disappointment and longing for her.
But are the bonds different?
Here, both Rhysand and Lucien pulls on the bond:
"I was pulled from sleep by something tugging at my middle, a thread deep inside."
"'It felt... strange,' Elain breathed. 'Like you pulled on a thread tied to a rib.'"
Very similar, don't you think?
"Cauldron mates" are "immersed in all these territorial and possessive emotions". They have an "aggressive reaction". (Though Lucien didn't come across as aggressive)
Yet both Rhysand and Lucien were willing to let their mates choose who they wanted to be with.
"... for three months I tried to convince myself that you were better off without me."
"'The day of your wedding, I'd planned to get rip-roaring drunk with Cassian, who had no idea why, but(...)'"
"'And then I'll ask your mate how he survived it - knowing you were engaged to someone else. Sharing another male's bed."
✨Bonus✨
"Standing before me was the most beautiful man I'd ever seen." Feyre to Rhysand
"'You're the most beautiful thing I've ever seen.'" Rhysand to Feyre
"But he couldn't breathe as she faced him fully. She was the most beautiful female he'd ever seen." Lucien to Elain
"And he could have sworn something sparked in them as she met his gaze." Elain to Lucien🤭
Up next, let's do nessian! This will be shorter as I feel we have more info on feysand and little to none between Elain and Azriel, as they do not have a bond.
Upon first meeting, Cassian was paying an overly obvious amount of attention to Nesta. Staring at her over and over again, it was borderline rude lmao. These males loves to stare at their mates. Keep in mind that Cassian too, met Nesta before she was fae. Something Lucien and Elain never got to. At least that we know of.. (And remember what Rhysand said about Feyre being turned into fae and what it did to his acknowledgment of the bond.)
"Cassian was seizing up Nesta (...)"
"Cassian watched every bite she took, every bob of her throat as she swallowed."
"Lucien just stared at my sister (...)"
"Lucien was staring at Elain as he spoke."
"He only glanced at Elain (...)"
And the sisters loves it of course!
"Nesta didn't bat an eyelash as she studied the handsome features, the muscled torso. Then turned to me. Dismissing him entirely."
"(...) whose face was a calm void while she traced a finger over the embroidery on the couch cushions."
Both males are drawn to their mates, longing for them.
"I wondered why no one had yet to mention what now shone in Cassian's eyes as he gazed at my sister. The sorrow and the longing."
"I sensed no ill will, no conniving. Only concern for her... And sorrow. Longing."
"'I would never hurt her.' A bleak sort of honesty in his words."
↑ This goes against the "Cauldron mates" description. I find the "cauldron bond" to be a bit... problematic? They mentioned that the only couple who had one of these bonds were elucien and I find it to sound a bit... like Lucien wants to SA her... Though Feyre sensed no ill will on Lucien's end!
And Lucien still longs for her in Silver Flames. They didn't fully disclose when the baby-making instincts would turn to hate, but it's been around two years since the bond snapped.
"Cassian's heart strained at the pain etching deep into Lucien's face as he tried to hide his disappointment and longing."
There is tension between both couples. The females ignores while the males feels the hurt and longing of it. Mating bonds are sacred to Fae, it is not a known thing amongst humans. Both Nesta and Elain clung to their humanity, Elain having particulary more difficulty with coming to terms with her new body. Nesta grew to love it, though the mating bond was a different story.
"'Not everything in my life is about your sister, you know.'"
"'I'm not always in this city to see my mate."
There's unresolved tension between both. Well, at the time for nessian. Rhysand, Lucien and Cassian all claims that their mates feel "shackled to them". It is an obsticale in the relationship, will they fall in love or is it simply the mating bond?
"(...) she'd developed a keen awareness of his presence in any space, any room. She hadn't been able to stop it, to block it out (...)"
Mates are keenly aware of each other in close proximity.
Let's move on to e/riel!
They met at the same time as nessian. Cassian was preoccupied with Nesta, whom was trying not to acknowledge him. Rhys was fixated on Feyre, but at the same time fighting the anger toward her sisters due to Feyre's upbringing. It was awkward, to say the least...
"Elain said to Azriel, perhaps the only two civilized ones here (...)"
Azriel and Elain made small talks. Azriel: "a polite, bland smile on his face." and Elain: "Her shoulders loosned a bit." Likely feeling relief for breaking the tense ambiance from the rest. Az is being polite, and so is Elain. No strong feeling however.
There is not much to remark on this encounter. Nothing to compare to elucien as there is no pull, neither feel drawn to each other. Cassian is staring down Nesta as he is drawn to her, Azriel is not doing the same to Elain. They talk, as many don't. And that's it!
They met again in Hybern, where Az was shot with faebane aka bloodbane. It is used to neutralize powers, a bond might feel dulled, but it won't vanish.
"Azriel cried out in pain. She (Mor) froze."
"Mor looked at Azriel - and there was real fear there. Fear - and something else."
"Azriel hissed - but covered her bloody fingers with his own."
Az had no reaction to Elain during this scene. It was an intense situation, drawing reactions from the couples. Feysand, nessian, elucien and moriel all had moments, but not e/riel.
"Both wanted to join us at the Hewn City, but someone had to guard the city - part of their long-held protocol. And someone had to guard Elain, though I certainly wasn't about to tell Lucien that. Cassian swearing and pissy, got the short end of the stick, and Azriel only clapped him on the shoulder before heading up to the House to prepare."
"(...) Lucien now stood in the sitting room, close to Elain's side"
"Cassian casually slid Nesta behind him, his fingers snagging in the skirts of her black gown."
Lucien wouldn't have hesitated to guard Elain (neither would Cassian), though he was busy being useful in other things. Azriel was not very interested in playing guard for the city - for Elain, and was more than happy to leave her. Males are highly protective of their mates. It is seen time and time again.
As mentioned previously, mates are keenly aware of each other. Like the nessian quote.
Here is an example of Elain being in the same room as Lucien and Azriel. Both instances takes place in acofas:
"(...) hoping to keep his focus on me. Knowing it was an impossible task."
"Az, to his credit, gave Mor a smile of thanks, a blush creeping over his cheeks, his hazel eyes fixed on her. I looked away at the heat, the yearning that filled them."
No attention to Elain, though she was in the very room...
"But Lucien's attention went right to the hallway toward the back, his nostrils flaring as he scented Elain's direction. And who she'd gone with. A low snarl slipped out of him-"
Jealousy. He is jealous when Azriel and Elain are alone, in acofas too with Graysen and Elain's history. Rhys is jealous of Feyre and Tamlin plus Tarquin. Cassian is jealous of Nesta and Eris. Azriel has been jealous of Mor and Helion (both in acowar and sf) as well as Lucien and Elain (in sf).
Azriel is currently juggling his feelings toward both Mor and Elain. The others are not interested in anyone other than their mates.
"'I'm a mated male now.'"
"Given that his own status as a mated male made him uninterested in any sort of female company these days."
Cassian is not seen with anyone else, thinking of anyone else. Same with Rhys and Lucien, of course.
"The ancient healer jerked her chin toward Lucien. 'See what he can do. If anyone can sense if something is amiss, it's a mate."
Now... Lucien was apart from Elain for months after Hybern. Azriel was there.
Elain's body had been mutilated, altered against her will. She had in the process lost her fiance and everything she had built in her previous life as a human in the Mortal Lands.
She wasn't eating nor sleeping. Had lost a ton of weight. "Her skin was so pale it looked like fresh snow in the harsh light. I realized then that the color of death, of sorrow, was white."
She does not do well inside all day.
"I want to go home."
"She was supposed to be married next week.' 'So she keeps saying, over and over.'"
"A shell." "A void."
Elain was severly depressed, having lost almost all forms of functions. She mourns her human life, while being cooped up in House of Wind. A place she rarely visits later on.
"I have seen many victims of trauma before. Her symptoms match well with many of those invisible wounds."
It is well-known that Lucien is the one who tells her she needs to get outside. "She needs fresh air." "Take her to the sea. Take her to some garden. But get her out of this house for an hour or two."
"Elain sat silently at one of the wrought-iron tables, a cup of tea before her." "'I... I was sleeping, but I heard..." She is already improving after being moved and being able to go outside in the garden.
"'What can I get you Elain?'"
"'Sunshine.'"
Azriel is the one who figures out that she is a seer.
"Azriel's hazel eyes churned as he studied my sister, her too-thin body. And without a word, he winnowed away."
This happens after Elain thinks she dreams. He becomes suspicious of what she says, the way she behaves. And likely goes to the library to put his theory to the test. He's a smart guy, let's be real!
"The Cauldron made you a seer."
He does figure it out, putting a name to it. And Elain feels a wash of relief from indirectly being told she is not crazy. Though even with powers, the invisible wounds linger.
I would argue, that it's fair to draw comparisons with how Cassian had no idea what Nesta's powers were. They too, were taunting her. It is frustrating to not be able to understand a part of yourself. Though a power is not something that is wrong with you, but a strenght once you master it. Rhysand was the one who used his daemati powers, going into Nesta's mind and realized her powers were pure death.
What do we know about mating bonds?
We know that once the bond is accepted, the couple falls into a "frenzy" to ensure that the male impregnates the female. It is already a known thing. Both feysand and nessian experienced this.
Rhys claims that the bond becomes more prominant if both parts are fae, and it hit him like a slap to the face just like it did to Lucien.
Mating bonds will make the males possessive over their mates, showing signs of jealousy and the want to protect and keep their mates safe. Elucien, feysand and nessian went though this.
The chant: "you are mine, and I am yours."
"''You're mine,' he snarled." "Say it again,' he murmured. I knew what he meant. 'You're mine.' I breathed."
"(...) the words, the sense chanted. Mine. You are mine, and I am yours. Mate."
"'Say it,' Cassian whispered against her skin. She knew what he meant. Somehow, she knew what he meant. (...) 'You're mine.' He groaned, thrusting hard. She whispered, 'And I am yours.'"
The similarities are prominent. Nothing alludes to Elain and Lucien having a different bond than the rest of the mated pairs.
And there is no canon text supporting Azriel feeling drawn to Elain from the start and vice-versa.
There is mutual sexual attraction between Elain and Azriel, confirmed in Azriel's bonus chapter, but beyond that there is nothing in support of a mating bond between them. Both are attractive individuals, Elain is resisting the mating bond and Mor isn't giving Azriel the signs he so desperately wants from her.
Rhys, Lucien and Cassian have been longing and waiting for their mates ever since they've known of their existance.
Meanwhile Azriel hadn't gotten that far with his planning. Certainly not beyond the fantasies he pleasured himself to.

✨True Love Bonds vs Cauldron Bonds Theory Post: First Meetings ✨
✨ACOTAR AND HOFAS SPOILERS✨
Summary: There are 2 types of mating bonds in the ACOTAR world because the Asteri corrupted the Cauldron 15,000 years ago. They corrupted the cauldron to pair people up based on breeding potential and not soul bonds. In this way, they could produce more first-light for them to eat. These different bonds are shown differently from the pairings' first meeting. In this post, I offer to show the different first meetings of 5 couples, 2 of which are true love mates (Feysand and Nessian), 2 that are cauldron mates (Rhys’s parents and Elucien),and 1 that I believe to be a true love mate, but the other cauldron bond is confusing everyone (Elriel).
Ps: Feysand have both types of bonds, the true love bond that was present for years before they met and the cauldron bond that snapped after Under the Mountain. It seems to me that the cauldron thought Feysand would make good babies after Feyre became Fae.

AND ANOTHER THING!!
(lol not me running back to make my 2nd ACOTAR post EVER because I've had it with the stupid ship drama)
Tumblr media
I'm just going to say it: I don't even care if Elriel aren't true mates or whatever. I don't care if Elain has 2 mates. I don't care if the weird bond with Elucien is real, I don't care if Azriel's mate ends up being Mor, or Gwyn, or mf Alis.
It doesn't matter to me, for one SIMPLE reason.
The readers-us-me & you-are human. Mates, bonds- these concepts are fictional to us. They are not real. We do not understand them because we're not fae/animals/whatevers. The way SJM makes us understand the mating bond is by saying it is soul-level love, it is a love that craves the other person at all times, yada yada yada.
At the end of the day, we don't understand mating bonds unless you compare it to something we humans do understand - love.
THAT is why it was so important to have these couples fall in love/well on their way to the falling in love stage before the mating bond is revealed. That is what makes us understand the true implication of "fated mates". The mating bond isn't about fate about the Mother about whatever the hell spark and glow and fae territorial instincts. At its core, we only understand it and think of it as a positive thing because to us- we see it as everlasting LOVE.
That's why we didn't understand, nor applauded the pairings between Tamlin's parents, why there was no mating bond between Feyre and Tamlin, why Rhys's parents were mates and still had an awful relationship. We only like a mating bond if the pairing is clearly also in love.
That's why to me, the Elucien bond doesn't mean anything. Why are we revering a mating bond that doesn't have any love associated with it? Just what are we revering then? A claim to ownership? A chance of future everlasting soulmate love (aka, it doesn't currently exist though)?
What does it mean to have a mating bond if there is no love to us humans? Why are we cheering for something that's the equivalent of "oh I put a post-it note on your forehead that says you're mine...so...you must be with me now??" Make it make sense. Tell me why you are so hellbent on shipping these characters together who have shown no hint of any attraction or care towards one another.
If Elucien had fallen in love post Elain being yeeted out the Cauldron, I would've been all for it. But we got nothing from them. Nothing other than 3 more books of Elain avoiding him, Lucien avoiding her, no conversation, nothing, nada, zilch.
Why would I root for them? Just because they have a "mating bond"?
To put it in simple terms: A mating bond doesn't mean anything to me if it is not associated with love. Therefore, I am not going to cheer for an Elucien ship that has only a mating bond (not love, at least not currently), nor a Gw*nriel ship that has neither a mating bond (not printed or proven in the text), nor love (not proven or hinted anywhere in the text).
I am going to cheer for the obvious choice, because elriel the only ship that has shown they care for each other and are mutually attracted to each other.
That's all :)
Ok I'm done now someone please take my access to this platform away from me before I post 5000 other Elriel things
