Purple's Elytra Wings

The fact that purple's elytra wings are similar to insect wings is so special to me. The way they take care of them too, as if they are fragile is just AUGGH.

Its like the first thing that they always remember to do when they have the chance.

They use it so flawlessly whilst in battle too. Taking it off in close combat but reequipping it the moment an opportunity presents itself.

If they are fragile it makes me wonder how much damage they realistically would've taken here. They'd practically be halfway shredded after a move like that..

maybe its just a funny quirk they have

Bebagerie’s Hermitcraft Elytra Masterpost!

Over the past year or so I’ve built a pretty complicated stack of Elytra headcanons and, after the lineup of everybody’s different wings, it felt right to put a full info post together. Mostly for my own sanity, but I hope you all can find it interesting too!

Now,

What are they?

found in end cities, sometimes on preserved or pinned beetles, sometimes already removed

wing casings of a mysterious end beetle, suspect to be extinct or otherwise difficult to access

casings themselves have an unexplainable magical property

How do they work?

they connect with a user’s soul and/or existing magical bonds

must be attached to an article of clothing or something similar in order to form wings, cannot root in a body without natural wings

those With natural wings, whether present or predisposed, can root elytra wings into their bodies naturally

elytra forms are unique to every user, but the physical wings of most elytra users are bug-like

they must be attached to their root at all times, pockets are not reliable so most hermits take up the practice of decoratively embroidering the casings to their chosen root (similar to 18th century beetlewing work)

Roots

without natural wings, an elytra cannot attach properly to a user. while its possible to forge a makeshift attachment, historically it has been easier and more effective for a player to choose a ‘root’ for their elytra

like previously mentioned, a root is most commonly a clothing item and may be found as a harness, backpack, scarf, or any other article close to a user’s core

naturally winged players do not need a wearable root, and will often instead attach their beetle wing shells inside a pocket or sleeve

Elytra Damage + User Effect

non-natural elytra are not connected in any way to the user’s body, so damage to an elytra does not hurt the wearer

naturally winged users feel pain in their wings regardless of an elytra, but the elytra serves like an enhancement (in a way) and will assist in the healing process

elytra wings cannot be directly torn, broken, cut, etc. and will self-heal if attempted, elytra damage is found only in the shells themselves which can be cracked, broken, or lost

somehow, they can be repaired like any other tool, it just takes meticulous care considering the scale of the wing shells

Function + Modification

because they are unique to the user, elytras properly suit every hermit equally. they aren’t flawless, and of course they take some learning, but the base “stats” are the same for everyone

redstone-oriented players tend to tinker or modify their elytra in a number of ways, some are purely aesthetic, provide easier control or increase the utility of their wings

building a strong ‘connection’ with an elytra takes some time, there is a learned element to them like any other tool, especially for those without natural wings, so some newer players tend to stick with gliding and struggle to move their wings as an extension of themselves

Additional variation

on hermitcraft itself, naturally winged players are inhibited by limitations set to keep things fair. those with physical grown wings will have small, unusable wings without the assistance of an elytra

it is not uncommon for an elytra to change appearance with its user, due to the connection between their body and the wings formed

if a root is borrowed or traded, it will maintain some remnants from its original user which may effect the wing’s form, however for all intensive purposes the physical appearance of wings will come from the user and not the root or shells themselves.

other servers have varied rules, but in a regular ‘survival’ setting, players with natural wings may grow full wings but are not able to use them for proper flight

elytra headcanons i doodled a while back! feat. my favorite joe ive ever drawn

(ID: five colored marker drawings of various hermits and their elytras. each drawing is labeled with what kind of elytra each character has. in order, these are “cloak”, “vex”, “boxelder bug”, “grasshopper”, and “spooky halloween cape thing”.

first is grian. he’s a fae with birdlike hands and feet and a whiplike tail which has feathers at the end, pointed ears, dishwater blond hair, black dot eyes, and freckles. he is wearing a red sweater, black cargo shorts, and reading glasses with small, circular lenses. his elytra is a cloak that has been cut and sewn to resemble simplified wings. the base of the wings are red and the false feathers are gold, with small buttons at each crease. grian is sitting with his elytra half unfurled around him.

next is scar. he’s a human with green eyes, brown hair, and scarred skin. he is wearing a brown brimmed hat, jacket, and pants, a white buttoned shirt, and he is holding a cane in his right hand, and gesturing with his left hand while smiling. his elytra are a pair of vex wings. they resemble simplified bat wings with moth-eaten holes and are a pale blue color.

next is tango. he’s a pale netherborn with messy, swept-back blond hair, pointed ears, sharp cheekbones, and stubble. he’s wearing a red shirt with grey circles on the biceps, gold-framed goggles with red lenses, oversized red work gloves, and black overalls. he has his back mostly turned to the camera and has his arms spread out. his smile is visible, but his eyes are obscured. there are two small, empty speech bubbles around him. his elytra are a pair of boxelder bug wings. they’re folded on his back, showing only the shell, which is black with red outlines.

next is joe hills. he’s a human with long brown hair with green tips, cat eye glasses, and a handlebar mustache. he is wearing and oversized blue t-shirt with a white ‘at’ symbol on it and blue pants with patches sewn on. he’s hovering in the air and smiling at the camera. his elytra are grasshopper wings. the top pair are long and thin, and are tan. the bottom pair are triangular and are mostly brown with a green bottom edge.

the final drawing is cleo. they’re a tall, fat zombie with orange snake hair, grey-green skin that has been stitched together, and white eyes with black sclera. she is walking toward the xamera and is wearing a long, flowing, low-cut dark blue dress with gold trim, a split skirt, and gathered sleeves just below the shoulders, black and white striped stockings, blue flowers in her hair, and gold flat shoes. their elytra is a large, tattered, dark blue cloak that resembles huge wings. they are spread up and out behind cleo in an awe-inspiring but menacing manner. end ID.)

Minecraft armour designs modeled by the new default characters!

I had the most fun with the design for the chainmail - since it's uncraftable, I imagine that Zuri got this set from some defeated skeletons, and chose to accessorise/augment their armour with what remains of their foes. (also, chainmail socks are real, though they're fabric with chainmail attached to the top and sides. Standing on a bunch of rings every with step is just painful to imagine)

Following tradition, the gold armour is as impractical as possible :)
