How was Griffins mother? How was their mother daughter relationship? What where her thoughts about Valtor and the circle while Griffin was an member of them? Did she and Valtor get along? An what about her and Faragonda?
I've talked about their relationship here and explained what the main problem was. Basically, their relationship is very loving and her mother is supportive and understanding but Griffin can't get over the fact that her mother chose to stay at home and have her instead of first fixing the world that she was bringing her in when she is the most powerful witch Griffin has met (debatable whether her mother is more powerful than Faragonda's mother or vice versa (or they're equally powerful)). She is having this unrealistic idea that her mom could have changed the world on her own but because she had Griffin instead, now she is the one who has to take over that mission and admitting that she can't do it on her own will leave her without a purpose so she keeps pushing unrealistic expectations both on herself and her mother.
Valtor never met her. She was adamant that Griffin keep everything about her home a secret even from him because if Griffin ever wanted to leave the Coven, she would be persecuted and she'd need a hiding place so she wasn't to reveal where she lived. Griffin listened to her that one time because she knew her mother was right. She always made sure Griffin knew what she was getting into and what consequences her choices would have but let her make her own decisions. Yet, about this she was very insistent and Griffin knew deep down that she was right even if she didn't want to admit it per se. Her mother knows about Valtor (and the extent of their relationship) and she doesn't trust him, nor does she like him. She thinks he's obsessive, possessive and arrogant beyond belief and she is pretty sure he'll break Griffin's heart (but that last part she hasn't shared with Griffin). She respects Griffin's choice to be with him and she knows what it's like to be in love so she's trying not to meddle too much despite her instinct to protect Griffin. She's aware things are out of her hands and she has to let Griffin make her own way through life no matter how distressing that might be for her.
In my headcanons Griffin's mother practically raised Faragonda. More on that here. They have a better relationship than Faragonda does with her own mother. But the truth is that both Griffin's mother and Faragonda's mother are sailing the Griffin x Faragonda ship. Griffin's mother thinks Faragonda is the best partner for Griffin and Faragonda's mother thinks Griffin is the only one who's worthy of being with Faragonda. The two aren't very fond of each other but they respect each other and Faragonda's mother acknowledges that Griffin's mother has done a lot for her by taking care of Faragonda.

I know you said that you hate to think of Griffin's dead and I am so sory for my next question but one of your last post let me thinking of it all the time...
How would Valtor react if she died in a fight?
I had more ideas of it but first when she where still on his side and they fight against the Company of Light. They fight side by side till Griffin gets hit by one of Marions attacks for Valtor and died right on the battlefield.
And then I had that idea that she would die while she was protecting Faragonda. Maybe she was still on his side too or not, but if she was it happened more out of instinct, maybe not during an actual fight between Circle and Company of Light but at something else where their paths accidentally crossed. Something happened and both where more or less forced to fight the same thing and then it just happened.
I am sory for the question, you really don't have to answer if you don't want to.
Ich hope you have still a nice day, lot of love <3
I was wondering whether to actually think in-depth about this and then the utter chaos of that situation proved too tempting.
If Marion kills Griffin (and she's the most likely CoL member to kill her since Oritel is the only other person who wouldn't be trying too hard to avoid killing Griffin but I just don't believe that he would succeed), I think Valtor will kill her in return. They are usually equal-ish in power and Marion has other people on her side for support but I think in that moment Valtor will just instinctively explode with power in a fit of absolute, mindless rage and because he's literally made from the Dragon Fire, he'll have enough power to kill her. Plus, no one expects that type of reaction from him. He's mad that Griffin was taken from him and he couldn't save her. It implies that Marion is stronger than him and that means he's failed in two different ways. And without Griffin, the chances that he'll free himself from the Ancestral Witches' control on time before their plan has come to fruition are practically non-existent. I can see him decide that in that case what he can do is wreck Domino completely in revenge and destroy the Company of Light, of course. He gets the chance to tell Marion that Oritel and Daphne will suffer for what she did before she dies. Oritel has his own fit of rage, along with Hagen, and Saladin is keeping their backs safe but I can see Faragonda refusing to help against Valtor. The deal was that she helps the CoL in exchange for Griffin's life and now that Griffin's dead, she feels that she is responsible for that to a certain extent because without her help the CoL may have never gotten this far and Griffin could have still been alive. She almost gets murdered by Valtor as well when she tries to come near Griffin's body but he relents when she says that they have to take the body to Griffin's mom. He doesn't know where Emalyn lives so he needs Faragonda's help. Even in his fury he knows that Griffin would've wanted to be buried on her home planet despite never having talked about it. They didn't believe that anything like that would happen when they were working together.
I'm thinking that based on something Valtor says, Faragonda figures out that the Ancestral Witches have some kind of hold on him and that's why he and Griffin were staying with the Coven. That is a relief to a certain extent. It confirms that Griffin wasn't supporting the Coven's actions and was just staying by Valtor's side. Faragonda offers to help him free himself from the Ancestral Witches if he proceeds with Griffin's plan to make the Magic Dimension a better place for dark magic users. If she'd been by Griffin's side and helped her do that, maybe things would have been different. And she doesn't really care that some people will suffer while Valtor reorders the dimension with brute force and deception. Not after what happened with Griffin. Emalyn also agrees to help Valtor because while she didn't support the approach he and Griffin had to changing things, she knows Griffin gave her life for her love of him and she wants to see Griffin's goal to free him accomplished. Otherwise, it all has been in vain. Plus, she herself has some regrets about not doing more to help dark magic users. Maybe then Griffin wouldn't have gotten involved in the whole mess that killed her. Saladin and Hagen arrive then since Saladin figured where they were going and called Ediltrude and Zarathustra to ask where Griffin lived. Faragonda is very firm that she's not coming back to the CoL and she doesn't want to see Hagen again. She's more tolerant of Saladin because she knows he didn't want any of this either and that it's hard for him to pick either side. Because of him she helps them get away from Valtor with their lives. Their arrival reminded her that the twins will also need to be told about Griffin's death, though. Valtor hates the thought because he doesn't want to share anything about Griffin with others which is something that angers Emalyn. He didn't own Griffin and she had a life outside of him. Plus, the twins can help sneak them in CT where they could attempt to talk to Griffin's spirit in the crypt. They're successful in that and Griffin says she's glad that at least Valtor and Faragonda can finally see things eye to eye. That's really all she wanted - to be allowed to care about both of them regardless what kind of magic they have, to know that she has the right to love and live just like any light magic user has. That's probably gonna break them a whole lot more.
In the other scenario, regardless of whether Griffin is still with Valtor or not, I can see him going stir-crazy as he tries to figure out why Griffin disappeared before he gets a message that only points him to a place on Griffin's home planet. When he arrives, he sees her grave. It's such a shock and he doesn't know what to do. All he wants is answers as to what happened but because he has no idea how she died, he has no idea where to go and who to seek out to find out. Griffin's mom approaches him and he figures out who she is because of the family resemblance even though he hasn't seen her. She didn't want Griffin to reveal anything about her home in case she'd need a safe place if she left the Coven. She was the one who sent him the message. Faragonda didn't want to let him know even though she was aware that Griffin would have wanted him at her funeral. Valtor is instantly outraged when he hears about Faragonda and Emalyn refuses to tell him more until he calms down. She explains that it was an accident and Griffin died protecting Faragonda... which means that he can't touch Faragonda or he'd make Griffin's sacrifice pointless. That just makes him hate Faragonda even more but he can do without killing her. He'll just kill the rest of the CoL and Faragonda can do nothing to stop him because she knows as well as he does that they're responsible for Griffin's death (because Faragonda chose them over Griffin which could have changed the turn of events) and have to be punished. And that works in either case because if Griffin joined them, then it will also be a way to have his revenge on her as well by killing them and making Faragonda suffer. And if she was still on his side, then she would've wanted the CoL dead as well.

Any Company of Light headcanons you feel like sharing?
Boy, do I have headcanons, anon! Do I!
You can check these out if you haven't already - Marion & Griffin (&Oritel), height, Griffin & motherhood (!), rewrite arcs (but those are my general headcanons for all CoL members), Griffin joining the CoL
Griffin Sylvane:
- grew up on the planet Erebhus in the Andros solar system. The planet is swampy land with lots of water bodies all over that catch and reflect light even throughout the night.
- her hair can change color naturally (bc of Erebhusian genes) depending on how much sunlight she's exposed to, which is the reason why her hair was a lighter shade of purple when she was young but grew darker once she became headmistress of CT because of the limited sunlight around the castle. (Darcy's hair also changes from dark brown to blond for the same reason since I headcanon her to be Griffin and Valtor's daughter.)
- the golden eyes are also an Erebhusian gene.
- her mother - Emalyn - was a very powerful witch that studied at CT herself. She chose to become a housewife, however, and would do freelance work on translating and restoring ancient spells from home. Griffin learned most of what she knows about magic and about botany from her.
- her father - Aryan - had scarce formal education but knew how pretty much anything worked and could build and fix an unlimited number of things.
- Griffin went to boarding school on Erebhus until it was time to go to CT. After that she's only returned home briefly for summer breaks and post-graduation only on several occasions, including her father's funeral. He died (from stress) when she was 20-something and she felt guilty for adding on to his worries with her reckless and ruthless pursuit of her goals (of helping dark magic users against their oppression).
- she met Valtor in a secret library on Erebhus and his power convinced her to join him since she was getting frustrated with how long it was taking her to accomplish her goals, especially after what she believed she had to sacrifice for them.
(I'm gonna skip the whole Coven/Company era because I've talked about that a lot and I am still unclear on certain specifics.)
- post Domino's fall she joined the CT faculty after an extremely hasty process of getting credentials. She managed that with ease but she was depressed and feeling that survivor's guilt so her heart wasn't in it when she announced her candidacy for the post of headmistress. She was doing it to keep CT out of the Council's hands, who would otherwise hire their own pawn and control the most prominent school for witches.
- she won the election with significant support from important political figures such as Faragonda's mother and, surprising everyone, Erendor (who was feeling guilty for betraying his alliance with Domino to save his own skin and thus felt it his duty to help out those who were there and fought - including Griffin).
Faragonda Lydiriev:
- was born on a(n unnamed as of yet) planet from the Zenith solar system.
- her parents weren't married and she rarely got to see her father even when she was little.
- her mother - Sylvia - is a very powerful witch and her political influence is greater than that of the monarch of their planet.
- Faragonda has Spherian heritage. Her ancestors were the witches of Spheria (a place mentioned in s2 4kids (in 2x11)) who practiced the vilest of black magic. That is to say magic that was powered by negative emotions (like dark magic) but twisted things out of their natural order and is forbidden. (Just fyi white magic - powered by positive emotions but still twisting things out of their natural order - is also forbidden.)
- Faragonda's magic was powerful from a very early age but she had a lot of trouble controlling it. She was always accidentally destroying things or harming others.
- her mother sent her away to boarding school where she met Griffin and gradually she started staying with Griffin's family even over the holidays. They were the only ones who didn't treat her like something was wrong with her. Emalyn even gave her helpful tips on controlling her magic by balancing out her negative emotions with positive ones but she was refusing to use that method since she felt that it would disappoint her mother and reflect badly on their family name.
- she enrolled in CT along with Griffin and studied there for the first semester until it became glaringly obvious that dark magic just wasn't the thing for her.
- she transferred to Alfea when she chose to become a fairy. Her mother disowned her for it and her new classmates had opinions about a witch deciding to be a fairy but she was lucky to be roommates with Griselda in whom she found a new friend.
- her friendship with Griffin also suffered some by the change in her but they remained close until graduation when Griffin fell off the face of the Magic Dimension. Faragonda was hurt but decided that she'd rather keep their good memories than hunt down Griffin only to be rejected.
- she focused on her work on the fairy animal park (she was always an animal person) outside Magix City and on further studies and a career in Alfea. The idea was to eventually head the college and work on improving relations between dark and light magic users in general.
- that was until headmistress Mavilla (of Alfea) asked her to assist the Crown Princess of Domino on a diplomatic mission and Faragonda found herself face to face with Griffin... and the Coven.
- she was pissed that Mavilla had not told her of this because she figured it was all set up this way to use her against Griffin. Still, she decided to join Marion and Oritel's fight with the idea of helping Griffin and protecting her from execution. Plus, as time went on, she was convinced that the fight with the Coven matters more than anything else she could be doing currently.
- she does not remember this because she took a forgetting potion (*insert OUAT gif here*) on Griffin's ardent plea but she was the one who helped Griffin hide her pregnancy. They used an ancient Spherian curse to speed up the pregnancy (the original intended purpose of the curse was for it to allow the witch to collect the child that she was promised as payment for her services). Combined with Valtor's genetic material in Darcy, it almost killed her and Griffin but Faragonda literally used her life force to save them, which made her age somewhat faster than normal. Then Faragonda left Darcy in an orphanage on Erebhus and took the forgetting potion, leaving Griffin the only one to know that there ever was a baby (aside from the Ancestral Witches).
- started dating Hagen only after Griffin joined the Company because she was too focused on the situation with her to think about anything else beforehand.
- became headmistress of Alfea almost immediately after the last battle on Domino when Mavilla retired. She endorsed Faragonda as the new head of Alfea because of her political prowess (picked up both from her mother and Marion) that would allow her to maneuver the current circumstances better than any other member of the faculty.
- her mother, who helped a couple times against the Coven, showed up in person to ask Faragonda not to take the position of headmistress of Alfea but Faragonda told her off.
- she went through a heavy depressive episode herself after the last battle on Domino. She felt like she was too broken to really be a support to any of her friends and mostly felt like she could no longer be the person to brighten Griffin and Hagen's lives so she figured that it makes sense that Hagen left. Still, that hurt her even further to the point where she was stubbornly avoiding any mention of Hagen in an attempt to bury the pain deep down. She did the same with her pain over Marion and Oritel and stopped looking for any traces of them because she was afraid of what they'd find and how much worse that could break her. It was Griffin's relentless search of the truth about what happened on Domino that rekindled her hope of finding their friends but due to outside interference, they lost access to all clues as to what happened on Domino and were forced to give up on their mission to find Marion and Oritel and move on with their lives.
- eventually, she makes up with her mother who admits that she was wrong about the way she treated Faragonda. She didn't really know how to help her gain control of her magic, which is why she sent her away to people, who hopefully would know, but in Faragonda it created the sense that she was a disappointment and a failure and the entire relationship fell apart from there. Still, Sylvia was the adult and it was her responsibility to figure parenting out, which she failed. She is ecstatic when Griffin and Faragonda finally get together and she helps Faragonda through the realization that Darcy is Griffin's daughter from Valtor (that's when they make up).
Hagen:
- comes from the same planet as Oritel. In fact, his father used to work as the royal blacksmith and he's been best friends with Oritel since they were little.
- his mother made pottery and was the one of his parents who was quite direct and even brash when talking to someone else. His father was one to use flowery language and tons of metaphors in every day conversation.
- he studied to be a blacksmith under his father but went to work for Marion's parents instead of Oritel's because Marion won him over with her attitude and views.
- he would not go home in order to nudge Oritel to come visit him and set up meetings with Marion. He knew that they only did not like each other because of wrong first impressions and set out to bring them closer and help them reveal their true self to the other. Not entirely out of selflessness as having his two best friends living on different planets was quite exhausting.
- he never meant to be a warrior. He only studied combat in order to be able to test the weapons that he made himself. He was always more passionate about the craft of metalworking but when Marion and Oritel grew restless because of the Coven's activity, he put his life on hold to help them.
- that was until he met Faragonda and realized that he could die any day without having pursued what he himself really wants. Still, his commitment to Marion and Oritel was too strong for him to fully devote himself to his relationship with Faragonda and when the political circus and legal procedures around Domino's destruction settled, he left to go search for Marion and Oritel.
- he didn't even show up at either of his parents' funerals, feeling like the part of him that was their son had long ceased to exist. It wasn't because he knew Faragonda would be there (he introduced her to his parents during the war when they both accepted the idea that anything could happen to them and saving the development of their relationship for peaceful times was not a risk they wanted to take; both his parents loved her and she felt that she could be a part of their family but she only went to Hagen's mother's funeral because she wanted to see him; she later figured that he may not have shown up because he knew she'd be there and she didn't go to his father's funeral to give Hagen the chance to go if he wanted but he didn't). Still, avoiding her was another point in favor of not going since he felt guilty about the way that he left her to deal with the loss of their friends even though he did it so that he wouldn't drag her down with him when he couldn't let go.
- he tried to hide it from his friends once they were reunited but his returns to Domino's cursed ruins ended up with him falling victim of a curse that renders him unable to feel any kind of touch and/or pain. Everyone learned when Bloom accidentally burned him and he didn't even notice. Normally, magic can't fix tissue damage (even if it is caused by magic) but Griffin's magic allows some healing to take place as long as the other person opens up their mind and body to her willingly. Not the easiest of tasks since she and Hagen were never particularly close but they manage to make some progress and Hagen can finally feel the warmth of his friends again.
- after he learns that Marion chose to join Oritel in his imprisonment, Hagen got extremely upset, which forced him to reevaluate his feelings for and his commitment to them. He'd always put them first to the point where he ignored himself, which is the reason why he refused to be reinstated as their counselor.
- he chose to restore the Magic School for Forgers in Hoggar (which is NOT the planet that he comes from; fuck canon/Wiki) instead and teach there.
Oritel:
- youngest out of six brothers and therefore not of interest to his parents since his chances for inheriting the throne were practically non-existent.
- doesn't have a very good relationship with his brothers, who tend to ignore him similarly to their parents.
- he has magic but thanks to his parents' neglect he never really got proper magical education and training how to use it. His raw power is actually quite impressive, considering how little practice he had to develop it. His magical core is underground waters.
- hated Marion for "stealing" his best friend but with time fell in love with her.
- he knows that Marion went against her parents' wishes and societal expectations to marry him and it makes him feel like he's detrimental to her. Marrying him was her first decision as heir to Domino's throne that the whole universe witnessed and it was one that left people looking down on her for the choice. Those that respect it only do so because of her heritage, not out of respect for her.
- he compensates for feeling like he's dragging her down by being a perfectionist and a - self-proclaimed - paragon of virtue. He tends to easily veer into self-righteous territory because of all the pressure on him as Prince Consort of Domino (yeah, that's right, no kings of Domino in this fucking household).
- is close friends with Erendor despite the age difference between them (Erendor is at least a decade younger than him) since he knows what it's like to be young and not taken seriously. There are extreme homoerotic undertones to that relationship that Oritel is completely oblivious to, Erendor is too blinded by internalized homophobia and toxic masculinity to notice and Marion and Samara pointedly ignore although for different reasons.
- after the Coven attacked Domino, killed Marion's parents and damaged the Roc - which was part of Domino's defense systems - Oritel used his magic in combination with the Dragon Fire in the core of Domino (thanks to his close connection to Marion and Daphne and their pieces of the flame) to raise a shield around the whole planet that would stop unauthorized teleportation. He and Marion also repurposed the Roc - repaired by Hagen - as a library to keep safe Domino's magical archives.
(...aaaaaand that's pretty much it for Oritel; I need to think about him more but I haven't gotten to that point yet.)
Marion:
- has a younger sister (based on the family tree fake!Avalon showed Bloom).
- very strained relationship with her mother and an almost non-existent relationship with her father. She's not close with her sister either since their mother didn't have a lot of interest in her Dragon-Fire-less child and Marion never had free time with all the grooming to be the next Queen of Domino.
- resigned to a loveless marriage since young age only to slowly fall in love with Oritel and decide to fight for her own happiness. Was engaged to someone else before but she broke it off and married Oritel.
- had horrible doubts about becoming a mother due to her own relationships with her parents and the way she was raised. Still, Daphne instantly became the light of her life.
- Marion was tutored at home but she allowed Daphne to do specialized studies at Alfea, much to Marion's own mother's chagrin. She always believed that Marion was raising Daphne wrong and allowing her to mingle with the nobodies at Alfea was just further proof.
- Marion was the one who started noticing the pattern of concerning magical thefts all over the dimension. Her mother did not pay attention to her worries but Oritel supported her and the two decided to take matters in their own hands. The Coven was very successful in turning that against them and making them as well as Domino look suspicious in front of many of the other monarchs. They only really managed to start getting the upper hand once Faragonda and Saladin joined them.
- the death of her parents is an awful time for her because she had a lot of negative emotions to deal with (mostly guilt and self-hatred for not really feeling much about her deceased parents rather than the typical grief and melancholy but that wasn't any easier to handle) and a ton of bureaucratic nonsense that she was stuck with instead of fighting the Coven. The only thing that saved her sanity was trusting the other Company members to hold the front while she was assuming her new queenly duties.
- was suspicious of Griffin's sudden and untimely decision to defect from the Coven but was also interested in exploiting the opportunities that could provide (unlike Oritel). Did not appreciate the realization of how much Faragonda's presence has shaken Hagen's loyalty to her and Oritel and how it twists her arm into respecting Faragonda's - unreasonable - demands. They all had to do a lot of work on functioning as a team but eventually succeeded.
- had a panic attack when she learned she was pregnant again. The timing was awful. Not only was her whole planet under vicious attack, but she was also the Company's strongest fighter. A pregnancy would incapacitate her for months on end and provide the Coven with significant advantage. She was out of her mind with worry over the complications this would create for the whole universe.
- late one night when she couldn't sleep, she instinctively found Griffin and confessed that she was considering having an abortion. She knew she could count on Griffin's cold rationality to give her the push to do what she couldn't make herself do but she was surprised when Griffin vehemently defended her right to choose and encouraged her to do what is best for herself. She decided to keep the baby because she'd already sacrificed so much of herself and her own life for the sake of her kingdom. Besides, she didn't want to give into her fear of being unable to protect her children from the Coven.
- speaking of, Daphne was insistent on being included in the battle with her own Dragon Fire and her Nymph powers. Marion was firmly against, dead set on protecting Daphne and keeping her as far away from the fight as possible. She and Griffin got into a fight about that once when Griffin allowed Daphne to accompany her on a minor mission. Ultimately, Griffin's point that Marion was letting her fears control not just her, but Daphne as well got through to her and Marion allowed Daphne to be included in the planning but mostly on the periphery of the action. Daphne's most prominent role in the war was her task during the final battle to protect her baby sister.
- Marion knew there was a possibility that the information they were given was incorrect and that their daughters were alive out there, yet she still chose to transfer her spirit into Oritel's sword. She didn't have time to truly think through her decision and she couldn't bear the thought of staying behind only to find out that her daughters were truly dead and she'd lost Oritel as well. She feels intense guilt for essentially abandoning her girls.
Saladin:
- has a sister (Helia is his nephew since Saladin never felt ready to pursue romantic relationships after the war with the Coven). The two are relatively close and Saladin loves Helia like his own child.
- he did two-time Griffin and Faragonda. The two were both reluctant about sharing that they were dating a certain Specialist because of the turbulence in their own relationship at the time thanks to Faragonda transferring to Alfea. So for a time, he got away with it. His intention was never to hurt either one of them. He preferred being with Faragonda but he could tell that she was going through a lot and didn't want to rush her into a relationship. At the same time Griffin really understood his commitment to a cause (he signed up for RF because he believed in fighting for a better future) and they were already "dating". It was casual anyway so why should he have to break up with her when he's not really cheating with Faragonda, right? It was... quite the fallout when the truth came out but Griffin and Faragonda were also somewhat relieved to learn they were dating the same guy because they both chose to interpret it as proof of their continued similarities despite the recent changes in Faragonda and their relationship. Plus, Saladin was last year at RF at the time and later he was busy on missions all over the dimension so the distance from him helped them both get over the fiasco.
- Saladin was sent along with Faragonda on the diplomatic mission to help out Marion and Oritel. Mavilla mostly arranged his presence as cover for her true intentions of orchestrating the meeting between Griffin and Faragonda (not that that deceived Faragonda for long). Still, he took to Marion and Oritel's cause and decided to help them out as much as he could while maintaining his career at RF. He had reservations about Faragonda's trust in and protection of Griffin but he chose to support her. He didn't have her blind faith in Griffin but knew enough to understand why that was so important to Faragonda and to agree that there was still hope for Griffin to make the right choices. Plus, he still felt bad for two-timing them and wanted to help them both with whatever he could.
- splitting time between RF and the CoL made him feel like he was failing in both of his missions but both felt too important for him to be able to give up on either. The Company afforded him the opportunity to act in situations in which the Specialists would not be allowed to due to concerns of political nature. Having Marion and Oritel's influence to fall back on provides him with a lot more opportunities to help, however, and he really believed in what they were doing.
- Saladin was the one to find out that the headmaster of RF allied with the Coven. He saved one of the wands of the Ancestral Fairies (s6) from destruction and with the endorsement of Domino and Eraklyon was elected the next head of RF (which only complicated his work with the Company further but it was preferable to having to worry about whether or not the head of RF is corrupt and working for the Coven).
- he was the first to recover from the losses that they suffered during the final battle on Domino. He was scarred by losing their friends just like everyone else and he had survivor's guilt and intense feelings of failure as well but he also had a purpose to return to. All that time he was holding on to his role at RF because he knew that even if the war with the Coven was won, it wouldn't be the last one. The dimension would still need protection from new rising threats and he could continue working on being the defense. He also helped Griffin and Faragonda's recovery immensely.

Till Death Do Us Part
Summary: Griffin is celebrating her wedding and the happiness she and Faragonda bring each other when an interruption reminds her why Faragonda wasn't her first choice for a spouse. AU.
Look at that! A prompt that I've kept relatively short. And I managed to post it before the end of the year. Congratulations are definitely in order!
Petals rained from the white and blue lilacs in Faragonda's hair with every step. She twirled around with ease despite the midnight blue fabric clinging to her legs and forming heavy curls around her ankles.
She’d convinced Griffin to be the one in white the same way she’d convinced her to be her bride in the first place – with adoring looks, soft but deliberate touch and irresistible kisses. A ton of them.
The smile on her lips was brilliant, the little laugh lines around only adding a delicate charm. Griffin could not tear her eyes away from the most precious sight. Being her wife made the happiness on Faragonda's lips brighter, sweeter. She couldn't help but lean in to kiss her, the gazes of their guests fading from her mind to leave room only for Faragonda's heartbeat echoing through her own rib cage.
Metal clinking against glass stole all the breath from her. The sound rang through her bones painfully and her teeth clashed with Faragonda’s. They were forced to pull away.
Her face twisted in a grimace as her lungs fought through the faint scent of singed air enveloping her – like her life had caught fire. Like an invisible smokescreen it irritated her throat and stung at her eyes. The quiet spilled out of her mind and washed over the celebration. Her heels screeched jarringly against the tiles as she turned.
The familiar face greeted her, as expected. He was dressed in his finest suit, not a hair out of place. His composure was like a hard, unmoved rock – something to ground her when she’d been by his side, something to bury her when she was staring at him from across the room, her body failing to be a shield for the frail happiness she shared with Faragonda.
Sylvia's steps echoed behind her, and her own mother's did, too. They'd waited for decades for their daughters to get together. They wouldn't let the wedding be ruined now.
She only had eyes for the freezing, glacial blue of his own. The warm touch at her wrist was searing. A hiss tore from deep in her chest, her lungs staggering, fighting to draw in a breath, bruising against the edges of his piercing gaze.
She had not heard a single word from her wedding ceremony, except for those coming from Faragonda's lips. Only later, dancing in the arms of her new bride, her heart had stopped pounding for him and she’d forgotten the name that had almost been on the wedding invitations instead of Faragonda's, the name stuck in her mouth, tucked away under her tongue, the sound of it poison to her very life.
"Valtor," Faragonda's calm voice cut through the tension inside her, her teeth sinking in her lip to close the gap opening in her chest and threatening to tear her in half.
She'd expected him, too. Unlike Griffin she hadn't let her guard down just because he hadn't interrupted their vows. He could still uproot the future they'd promised each other without wanting her back even for a second. The cruelty of it suited him. It suited her too.
"Mrs Sylvane," Valtor acknowledged Faragonda with a mocking bow of his head. "I am not here to infringe on the happiest occasion," his gaze shot over her shoulder to where Sylvia and Emalyn had to be standing behind them like a guard ready to attack. "I've come to make a toast."
Griffin squeezed Faragonda's hand. A silent plea to steer them clear of the catastrophe descending upon them. She herself was stuck to the spot, transfixed – just as she always was in his presence.
A smirk flashed across Valtor's face, dangerous, to be completely ignored by Faragonda. Her stoic stance appeared more tortured than defiant.
Valtor raised the champagne flute in his hand, always one for theatrics.
"One day when this all will be but a bitter, tainted memory, I want you to remember that you are not alone. Griffin has made promises before, to many different people. And she broke them all like she does every time. It's just her nature to be inconsiderate, deceitful and selfish, and to leave behind those that would give life and limb for her." His gaze moved to the people behind them once again. "Don't take my word for it. All you have to do is ask Mrs. Sylvane."
Griffin shook, shivers rocking her whole at the knowledge that her mother's heart would have cracked by now if it'd been made of stone. And it was not. How much more could she force it to bear?
"I am not alone," Faragonda was unmoved, her hands, clasping Griffin's between them, cocooned her in unshakable security. "Griffin's flaws do not bother me. She's made mistakes. We all have," she raised her chin. "Unless you'd admit that your attempt to kill her was completely remorseless as well as deranged?"
Cutting her brakes had been too banal to be him. It had also been too flawlessly executed to be anyone else.
Valtor grinned, unbothered. "Like I said, there's a long list of parties that would want payback."
"I wouldn't know," Faragonda responded to his smugness in kind. She brought Griffin's hand up to her chest, holding it directly above her heart. "She's my wife and I would never do anything to hurt her. I promised that I will love her in good and in bad, and whatever she does, won't change that."
Griffin's throat closed. Her fingers went limp between Faragonda's, her heart struggling to beat in halves, her lungs running on empty.
Valtor caught her eye, suspending her in a moment between two waves of panic only to throw her in the deep, "Well, that's a relief."
His tongue shaped every word carefully – a blade in her vulnerable flesh. If she could look away, down to her dress, it would be running red with her blood.
"Isn't it, Griffin?"
Her blood was on his lips – he would lick it slowly and savor it and she would still kiss him right after. But the very image of her fingers turning red where Faragonda cut herself on her edges made her stomach turn.
Her hand dropped from Faragonda's like a sinking stone tied around a drowning man’s neck. The ring she’d put on Faragonda’s finger was the noose and being the devoted, faithful wife that she was, Faragonda would never cut it loose.
She wasn’t Valtor.

How did Faragonda and Griffin met? They seemed to have been closed in the past because after Griffin worked with Valtor Faragonda still trusted her and Griffin was there when Faragonda gets her Enchatix. I can conclude that they have known each other at least since their school days but what happened after that? How did Faragonda react at Valtor? Their reactions when they rrealizedthey have to fight eachother? Why did griffin seem mad at faragonda in season one?
I have so many theories about those years but I'd be really interested to know what you think about it.
Take you time, I know how stressful some days can be
Lots of Love <3
I just want to preface this by saying that I am going to give you the events as they are in my rewrite. Most of that could be considered canon compliant as well but the one major difference is that in my rewrite Faragonda never got Enchantix because that transformation works in a fairly different way than it does on the show and there is simply no way for Faragonda to have earned it because of the way her life went and her family situation. I don't think she mourns that, though.
You have pointed out something very important already - that Faragonda trusted Griffin even after her time with the Coven which is major because Griffin was a literal magical terrorist. Even the closest of friendships can be strained by something like that. Not to mention that Faragonda was there and actually saw Griffin commit atrocities right in front of her eyes which is very different from just hearing about it. My explanation for that is that they didn't just know each other since they were young, they grew up together. So here's the thing:
Faragonda was born in a very powerful witch family that basically controls an entire planet in the same solar system where Zenith (Tecna's world) is. Faragonda was definitely encouraged by her family to develop magic from a very young age which is illegal but who's gonna tell them anything? The reason why it's illegal is that despite magic always coming in during childhood or not at all, children can't exercise proper control and it's dangerous for them to have magic, especially dark magic that is super volatile because it comes from negative emotions. So Faragonda's powers developed early on, before she even started going to school, but she couldn't control them at all. Her dark magic was powerful but very unstable because Faragonda mostly drew it from fear/anxiety/insecurity thanks to all the pressure she was under.
Because of her out of control powers, her mother decided to send her to a boarding school in the very faraway planet of Erebhus. Now if Andros is the first planet in its solar system, Erebhus is the fifth one there and it is known as the planet of the eternal sunset because all the water in it reflects the last rays of the sun during the entire night and the next day until the sun starts setting again and its rays are caught in the water surfaces all over again. The reason why her mother sent her all the way there is because the boarding school is a very old school that's famous for all the witch graduates they have so they understand witch psychology and can help Faragonda with the control of her powers. And that's where she meets Griffin because Griffin's mother also studied there and she enrolled Griffin, too.
They quickly become friends because Griffin has exceptional control of her magic and can help Faragonda deal with hers but Faragonda is better versed in magical politics all over the dimension so they both want to learn what the other knows and bond along the way. Griffin's mother uses magic to teleport from home to the school and back and so Griffin doesn't really spend the nights at the school which becomes a problem the closer they become since they want to spend more time together. They're kids, after all, despite all the serious stuff they're already dealing with. So Emalyn (Griffin's mom) contacts Faragonda's mom (still unnamed) and the two work things out so Faragonda can come and stay with Griffin's family during the weekends and later, even on school days. Faragonda's mom can tell Emalyn is a witch that knows what she's doing despite stepping away from the world of dark magic users a long time ago (she only uses her magic at home for everyday purposes) and she thinks being around her could benefit Faragonda's magical progress.
So Griffin and Faragonda grow up together but Faragonda doesn't really get that much better at controlling her magic. Emalyn is helping her with it (and so is Griffin) but she never pushes her the way Faragonda knows her mother would want her to be pushed and that creates constant anxiety that she's not making progress which gets in the way of progress. It's a vicious circle that keeps on spinning until it's time for high school and both Griffin and Faragonda sign up for Cloud Tower. Faragonda studies there for a couple months but things are just not right and it finally dawns on her that the reason why Emalyn wasn't pushing her to practice dark magic wasn't simply because she didn't want to stress her out. She could tell that Faragonda has an easier time channeling and controlling positive emotions which means she's better suited to be a fairy. She probably had a panic attack at the realization because she could just imagine the hell her mother's reaction would be but she couldn't pretend to be something she wasn't anymore.
She made the choice to join Alfea. Her family disowned her because of that. Griffin has a strong reaction, too, even if she does understand why Faragonda doesn't want to pretend to be something she's not but is struggling with the fact that Faragonda switched over to the socially acceptable kind of magic (the bias against dark magic is strong and planets where dark magic users such as Faragonda's family are in charge are an exception) and it's no longer them versus the world. She's upset because she's afraid Faragonda will start treating her the same way everyone else does.
The conflict between them escalates quietly with time since Faragonda tries to fit in more with the fairies which really ticks Griffin off because they are still mostly ambivalent towards Faragonda and she's basically falling into pretending to be something she's not despite trying to avoid exactly that. Faragonda meanwhile has had a taste of a completely different culture from the one she grew up in and some of it resonates with her but Griffin can't seem to accept that. Plus, she can see the similarities between fairies and witches that everyone else seems blind to and so she wants to become the next headmistress of Alfea (and this clearly has nothing to do with spiting her mother) to help bring fairies and witches together... to help bring her and Griffin together again. She thinks that maybe then Griffin will understand that she's been trying to bridge the gap between them all along. Griffin, in turn, wants to help dark magic users as a kind to be less ostracized so she decides to leave Magix because she feels like Faragonda is asking her for space and she doesn't want to be the one holding Faragonda back with her inability to reconcile with the change in Faragonda.
They part on good terms but with severe misconceptions about what the other is aiming to accomplish and that causes a festering bitterness between them that totally blows up in their faces when they meet on the battlefield. Now I'm thinking that they don't meet as soon as Faragonda joins the Company. In fact, Faragonda meets Valtor first on a mission that she gets involved in because her mother is a key player. So she's sent to Domino by the previous headmistress of Alfea - Mavilla. She wants to help even if she has to face her mother to retrieve and artifact the Coven (aka Griffin and Valtor) was trying to steal but it ended up with her mother. She convinces the woman to give it to her despite her mother's general neutrality on the Coven vs Company issue (she doesn't want to help light magic users and especially the Domino royalty but she will if it is the only way to stop the Coven from taking control of the universe because she doesn't want them to win). Faragonda just barely escapes from Valtor, though, who was on his way to stealing the artifact properly this time. He has no idea who she is and her untransformed appearance isn't remarkable enough that Griffin could gouge it was Faragonda from his description (Faragonda managed to teleport to Domino without transforming while her mother held Valtor off). And Faragonda gets asked whether Valtor was alone when she tells the Company what happened but something always happens and for weeks she can't get the full rundown on who exactly is Valtor's partner.
Until she and Griffin come face to face on a mission. Faragonda sees her first. She totally can't comprehend what she's seeing and freezes in place only for the effect to be exacerbated when she clearly sees the familiarity between Griffin and Valtor and it clicks that Griffin was who everyone was talking about when they mentioned Valtor's vengeful and hideously powerful partner. She can't believe Griffin would join him. Him whose entire purpose is to destroy all life that's inconvenient for the Ancestral Witches. She never believed Griffin would go that far in her quest to reinstate dark magic users as equals to light magic users. That's when Griffin also sees her and she has a similar reaction. Her worst fear aka Faragonda coming to the conclusion that fighting her is the right choice has come true when she left Faragonda behind just to make sure it won't happen. If she wasn't around to see Faragonda falling out of their friendship, she could keep her friend's warmth in her heart forever. But now that Faragonda is fighting alongside her enemies, Griffin is crushed.
They both get pulled away by Hagen and Valtor respectively and proceed to have a meltdown once they're out of danger. Faragonda reaches the conclusion that this is all Valtor's fault (let her have her delusion; it won't last long anyway) and Griffin reaches the conclusion that this is all the fault of the Council who have been using anti dark magic propaganda for centuries (a somewhat more accurate conclusion, though she's missing the part where Faragonda joined the Company to help them save lives). They both march back on the battlefield next time with the idea of making the other one see her mistake only to be very unpleasantly surprised when their misconceptions start to crack. Yes, Griffin is very much in love with Valtor but she's also the Griffin that Faragonda knows. It's not Valtor that changed her. And yes, Faragonda is on the enemy's side but she's still the good hearted, gentle friend that Griffin grew up with so it's not political propaganda that's brainwashed her. They have to deal with those realizations and figure out how to move on.
Griffin is more aggressive because she's convinced herself (not without help from Valtor) that she has to fight even Faragonda if she wants to not only achieve her goal, but also retain her freedom and even her life. She usually comes out on top simply because Faragonda isn't putting the same effort into fighting her but she can never bring herself to hurt Faragonda more than she'll be able to recover from. Especially since Faragonda isn't trying to hurt her. Her aggression only shows up against Valtor despite all the other Coven members that are trying to kill her (now why would you suggest that that's jealousy?). Faragonda hates the fact that he's Griffin's closest confidant now. She's sure none of that would have happened if she and Griffin had never parted ways. But she's not making that mistake twice. She'll stay until Griffin comes home with her or kills her. Griffin, on the other hand, knows Faragonda will never join her because she thinks Griffin has been made worse by her cooperation with the Coven but she will find a way to keep Faragonda safe even in the midst of battle until her plan succeeds and she can show her that she was right to fight for her goal.
The season 1 thing also stems from the whole issue with the Company vs Coven war. When the Trix came to CT three years prior to season 1, Griffin instantly connected them to the Ancestral Witches (it's quite obvious). She wasn't sure what to do because they were at the top of all applicants for CT and rejecting them could draw the attention of the Council to them and get them executed for being descendants of the Ancestral Witches even though they were just young girls. So she shared her dilemma with Faragonda because she trusted their friendship after they survived the war and fighting each other. However, Faragonda's reaction was the total opposite of what she'd expected. The second Faragonda heard of the Ancestral Witches again, she started having flashbacks to the destruction of Domino and Marion and Oritel's disappearance. That loss crushed her and it was only made worse when Hagen left to look for the pair and she blames it all on the Ancestral Witches (which is mostly fair but not entirely about the Hagen thing). Knowing how much the Trix resemble them is distressing and she wants Griffin to reject their applications even at the risk of them getting in trouble. Griffin has a severe reaction to that because if Faragonda is refusing to give a chance to three young girls that haven't done anything, then Griffin herself never deserved all the chances Faragonda gave her. She only gave them to her because of their friendship and Faragonda's clearly biased outlook on Griffin. So Griffin has a crisis of conscience where she's self-loathing and at the same time angry at Faragonda for not having the better judgment to just stay away from her. It feels like everything good she's done over the years crumbles in front of her eyes because she never deserved the chance she was given to even keep living and she distances herself from Faragonda because she's also distraught that Faragonda has changed. She never would've risked the lives of innocent girls like that in the past. So Griffin doesn't know what to think of herself or Faragonda and she does what she does best - self-sabotage.
I've actually written out a fic about this. It's called Left to Heritage.

Trivia Tuesday
Tumblr media
It’s been a hot minute since I last wrote one of these. This one is about The Power Inside a Family and deals heavily with the symbolism I used in that piece. I just have to ramble about it because it’s too perfect.
- Erebhus is Griffin’s home planet. I’ve spelt it with an h to indicate it comes from “erebh” which means evening, night. The idea being that there is so much water on the planet that reflects the final rays of the sunset that the whole night is light as day until the sun comes up again in the morning. It is known as the planet of the eternal sunset.
- On Erebhus it is tradition for brides to wear blue dresses like the ocean. They hold the ceremony under a tree the couple grew together to prove they can foster life on the swampy lands of the planet. The tree is usually planted outside their future house (or at least the place where it’s supposed to be) that they also usually build together.
- Emalyn’s engagement ring having a topaz gem was a gut feeling but I like how it fits. From Wikipedia: “the word topaz may be related to the Sanskrit word तपस् ‘tapas’, meaning ‘heat’ or ‘fire’”. That and the fact that topaz forms under high temperature and pressure at depth aka near volcanoes and there aren’t many volcanoes on Erebhus, it is a rare gemstone on the planet. Some topaz stones can fade from continuous exposure to sunlight and that is why Emalyn’s engagement ring is now paler than the intense gold it used to be.
- I picked lilies for Emalyn’s wedding flowers because they symbolize motherhood and fertility. They are used in weddings in China because they are tied to the 100 years of love. They are actually a 30th anniversary flower since they represent devotion. The roots and bulbs can be boiled in teas with healing effects.
- The apple tree I’ve mentioned in relation to Griffin’s veins is a symbol of wholeness, healing and connection with nature which is perfect for the idea of that part of the story. It also represents the idea that the future will be what you make it aka if you do good, good will come back to you and vice versa.
- Pomegranates symbolize fertility and rebirth, spring which is what Griffin’s transformation (as Faragonda pictures it) would do for her and for the rest of the dark magic users as well. However, it can also mean war due to the shape of the pomegranate that reminds of a grenade. (Which is ironic because Faragonda is only thinking of seeds aka spring rebirth but instead it’s more like Griffin’s heart gets replaced with a pomegranate when she goes to war against the Council.)
- The hawthorn tree symbolizes love and protection in Celtic mythology. It is also known as the Fairy Tree because it’s guarded by fairies that allow the respectful gathering of sprigs and flowers, especially if it’s brides with hawthorn blossom in their hair or a bouquet that symbolizes their union of love. Its thorny branches are great for birds to make their nests safely. The hawthorn tree is known for its longevity and can live over 400 years. Its healing properties have been used by traditional medicine for a long time. To Greeks the Hawthorn was symbolic of love and would help bring success and longevity to newlyweds.

Sparks of Life Actual Trivia
Tumblr media
As the title suggests, I will do my best to try to keep this to things that are actual trivia and not the outlines of fics (even though, let’s be real, I could turn anything into story material). Here we go.
- Valtor’s most used emoji is a blue heart that he is always sending Griffin. He barely uses any of the other emojis and that one somehow always appears as the most recently used as well as simply the most used. Griffin finds it cute even when she jokes that her most used emoji is for certain the one that is facepalming. Not just when she’s texting with him but with the twins, too, and sometimes, yes, even with Faragonda (though, that is usually when the conversation steers to something Hagen did XD). Her actual most used emoji is the one with the sunglasses because she is a badass bitch. (All of this is totally Zarathustra’s fault as she is the one that gave Griffin the opportunity to use literally every single emoji there is (and annoyed her into doing it).) Her second most used emoji is the one that blows a kiss. That one can be used both ironically and unironically. She might be a sassy bitch but she is a sassy bitch that really loves her people and even shows it from time to time. XD
- Valtor bought Griffin a waterfall incense burner:
Tumblr media
and she has not been able to recover from that gift ever since. It meant a lot to her since she immediately fell in love with the idea of a waterfall incense burner when she first saw it but she didn’t think of buying one for herself since Valtor has a delicate sense of smell and strong scents irritate him easily. She needs to be careful when she buys scented candles and perfumes (or she’d end up giving them to the twins, again) and she didn’t think it a good idea to have one of those as she rarely burned incense anymore because of his sensitivity. She was very touched when he bought one for her and absolutely loves watching the smoke cascading down like it’s water. They still have to maneuver with it sometimes but it’s all good.
- One time Emalyn had brought out the old albums with whatever photos she and Griffin’s dad had managed to take of their daughter. She and Valtor were going through them while Griffin was fussing on Valtor’s shoulder (no need to let go of him just because she’s not thrilled about his curiosity). Valtor noticed the bowl of gummy bears in one of the photos and asked about it. Emalyn laughed before telling the story about how for one of Griffin’s birthdays in college Ediltrude had made vodka gummy bears since Griffin really loved eating the things when she was little and, well, it needed to be appropriate for the celebration at hand so just ordinary gummy bears wouldn’t cut it. Valtor listened intently but Griffin could tell there was something making him sad as he wasn’t talking a lot after that. So she picked up a packet of gummy bears next time they went shopping and that was the first time Valtor ate gummy bears (and the first time Griffin ate gummy bears ever since those vodka soaked ones) as well as, quite possibly, the last. He wasn’t a fan and tried not to antagonize her about loving them. He made sure to buy her a packet once in a while instead. He also might have gotten her a gummy bear bouquet for her birthday.
- Valtor and Griffin love to train together. There is a fitness room in the penthouse and they do spend some of their together time in there even if Griffin rarely uses any of the equipment in it. She might use the treadmill occasionally but that’s about it. She prefers to do yoga while Valtor does his exercises. Their background music choices might have clashed a little as she basically needs hers to be soothing spiritual music while Valtor prefers more energetic tunes. They solved that with wireless earphones. The matter of getting distracted while watching the other (and even pulling the other into that distraction as well) has been harder to resolve but they love spending time together even when they are both absorbed in their own things and it is only about feeling the silent presence of the other so they keep it up. They even spar together as Valtor used to take martial arts lessons and he might have taught Griffin as well so that they can have all that fun together. You know, pressing each other into walls and pinning each other to the ground. ;) They love their training sessions.
- Bathroom commodities are a bit of a nightmare. Griffin has her vanity - luckily for her because otherwise she wouldn’t have been able to get to a mirror most of the time with Valtor is the way. He is not as much vain as he is a perfectionist and also self-conscious (thanks to his mothers) and he spends ages in front of the mirror. So does Griffin, though hers is more from vanity. Yet, she was the one saying she was surprised Valtor didn’t have mirrors in every room. They still have the regular weekly fight about the bathroom as a lot of the time it looks like one of them is only waiting for the other to come out so that they can go in. It’s a bit frantic in the morning which is a factor in why the bathroom issue is one of their biggest sources of conflict when they are still sleepy and irritable or running late. They also tend to love sharing it when they are truly sharing it, however. Joined bath is one of the most relaxing activities they can imagine, especially when they help each other wash their hair. And it is perfect for cuddling and all that good stuff. ;)
- They have a fireplace in the penthouse that they both love dearly. Valtor finds the crackling of the fire and the warmth soothing and Griffin loves curling up in front of the fireplace with a good book and a cup of tea. Even more so if Valtor is there although most of the time he has paperwork to attend to. She doesn’t mind if she can lean on him and read into the evening. Winter nights have never been cozier or warmer. Though, sometimes the atmosphere turns competitive when they play chess in front of the fireplace. They happen to play other games at times as well but chess is their favorite and the heat of the fire kind of adds to the intensity. It satisfies their craving for theatrics as they are both drama queens so it is certainly a favorite thing of theirs. They even had a “picnic” in front of the fireplace once. It was fun, though they almost managed to push one of the dishes into the fireplace so they had to estimate a safety distance there.
- Griffin bought Valtor pens in different colors to help him color code his schedule and know what is important and what is less so. It was really useful even if Valtor wasn’t really feeling the idea at the beginning. Once it started saving him time that he could spend with her, however, he was quickly on board with it. He’d also use them to draw Griffin pics on stray sheets of paper during the day while he was talking on the phone or having to wait for a document to get sent to him. He really started loving the idea. So much so that he didn’t notice he was signing paperwork with the pink pen until his secretary pointed it out. They had to print out all of it anew and he wasn’t thrilled about having to repeat the whole process. Griffin laughed - very uncharacteristically and unsympathetically of her - when he told her that evening and he wasn’t quite playing offended just to get her kisses. He didn’t mind that part, though, and he did keep the pens since they were useful and made his day somewhat brighter.
- They love to travel when they can. The weekends are usually free and even if that doesn’t leave them a lot of time for long trips, they still love exploring the “local” are. They just grab the car keys and some spare clothes and drive for as long as they can before they have to start coming back or until a town catches their eye. They sometimes pick a destination beforehand, though that is left to luck. Valtor usually lets Griffin pick it as they lay out a map and whatever she points to becomes their destination. It doesn’t really matter where they’ll end up when they are together. They even managed to get a little further away a few times when Valtor hired a private jet. It was a good way to see something new when they’d already explored a lot of the closer places and to add something different in their lives. And even if they had to come back too soon, they still have the memories and those magnets Griffin loves to buy from the places they visit instead of taking photos. Photos of them, at least. They end up with plenty beautiful shots of scenery. And one or two of Griffin when Valtor manages to catch her off guard. She has snapped loads of pics of him, though, as he would even pose for her (and she might have one or two framed in her office at work plus some more in the penthouse).
- Once they were on a date (before they moved in together), Valtor took her to a ferris wheel which stopped working right as they were at the very top. Valtor is still not over the crisis he had back then (nor the fit of rage) but it ended up being Griffin’s favorite date of theirs. Sure, they were stuck for about an hour and she needed to go to the toilet which might have been thanks to the low temperatures and the wind up there that had her freezing, but it wasn’t so bad when Valtor was with her. They watched the stars that they could see despite the city lights and they cuddled into each other for warmth. Well, she cuddled into him as he was still warm like an oven and she wasn’t sure how he was doing it. And of course, cuddling turned into kissing which also got intense. They both had to fix their clothes and button what had been unbuttoned when the wheel started again most unexpectedly. Griffin still looks on that date fondly and Valtor can be swayed into admitting it went quite well considering the circumstances when she reminds him about after the wheel when they were warming up.
That’s about it... Nine points for the 9th... of June. (I have connected the dots. XD)

Here are the last headcanons that were given as an alternative option to the ones I already did in a previous ask but I decided to do them both. These are for Griffin.
TW for death
★ - sad headcanon
After Griffin escaped the Coven, she wanted to return to her home planet to get her mother out of there because she was afraid that the Coven might find her. However, from Alfea she was transported to Marion and Oritel’s palace where she was to stay until they could convince the Council not to kill her. They couldn’t let her out and it took some time before Oritel sent a team to extract her mother but it was too late. Griffin’s house was burned to the ground and her mother was dead. Griffin didn’t take it well but there was nothing for her to do. She couldn’t even be angry because she wasn’t in the position to make any demands currently. She was lucky Faragonda had managed to convince Marion and Oritel to take her in and guarantee for her in front of the Council which saved her life. She was convinced that Valtor was responsible for her mother’s death and she was ready to murder him the next time she saw him but it turned out that it wasn’t him. It was his mothers who had made it look like it had been him, of course, and that seemed to give him pause but Griffin knew even that couldn’t make him change his mind and leave them. So she lost both him and her mom and there was nothing for her to do.
▼ - childhood headcanon
Griffin learned to cook when she was very young. She would help her mom bake cookies ever since she could remember. And her mom was teaching her about herbs and spices since about the same time. So she quickly found herself interested in learning to cook just like her mom and Emalyn was willing to teach her but slowly and by only allowing her access to utensils that weren’t dangerous for her. Griffin was curious, of course, and tried to do things on her own behind her mom’s back which, needless to say, resulted in a few accidents. It was a good thing Emalyn was specializing in healing spells to cure the burns and cuts. But experience teaches and Griffin was soon very good at cooking even if she was barely 10. She was helping her mom in the kitchen and sometimes even cooking on her own when her parents were busy and she wanted to do something to help them relax.

“Promised by the Stars” Trivia
(not the full title but that is too long; also that is the tag I use for this)
Tumblr media
I just posted “The Heart Wants What It Was Promised by the Stars” and here are some other thoughts on that universe that will have to remain unexplored any further because I simply don’t have the time to make everything a 20-part series.
- The Council is an institution that was meant to unite all kingdoms and help oversee their activity and resolve any issues whether political or magical. However, from very early on in its existence light magic users became the majority making it up and so it began thriving on the alleged superiority of light magic over its dark counterpart and the idea it was founded upon was quickly corrupted by the Council members who began exploiting their positions in order to tip the balance of the forces to where they wanted it to be.
- Griffin’s kingdom is a kingdom of dark magic that has been ruled by a lineage of witches for a long time now, much to the Council’s chagrin. They only have girls in the line and they all have their mother’s last name (Sylvane) and inherit the throne. Emalyn might have jokingly warned her husband that if he wanted a boy, it was the time to run before he married her because they would have a girl. It was a matter of magic. Their kingdom is found at a very specific position in space, surrounded by stars, and the knowledge of how to connect to the stars and use the power they can imbue your magic with is passed down from generation to generation. It makes their magic unique and it always wins out in the genes, even when the father has magic too.
- Ediltrude and Zarathustra were the children of a lady in waiting from Emalyn’s court whose husband had died into battle (they had some squabbles with the neighboring kingdoms that wanted to claim dominion over the whole planet but they didn’t stand a chance against the magic of the Sylvane family and Emalyn’s coven). They would play with Griffin when they were little and life was good with their parents protecting them from the reality of the cold war brewing between dark and light magic users. Their mother died after she was bitten by a snake that had sneaked into Griffin’s room and would’ve killed her if not for Ediltrude and Zarathustra’s mother. The poison saw her dead in seconds. There was no time for anyone to do anything. They just heard Griffin’s screams and by the time Emalyn got to her room, it had happened.
- Emalyn decided to take in the twins as her own children. Not just because she felt like she owed their mother for saving Griffin. She actually wanted to take care of the girls because she’d come to see them as her own with how close they were with Griffin. She also had some suspicions about the whole incident with the snake since it wasn’t a species natural for their land. It could’ve somehow gotten into the palace through carriages traveling in and out but Emalyn highly doubted that. So she wanted to keep people she knew she could trust close and the twins (who were 13 at the time) were Griffin’s closest friends. So she adopted them which the Council was livid about because it put more people in line for the throne which would make it harder to take control over that kingdom. They couldn’t do anything about it if they didn’t want to look like assholes, though, and keeping up their image is their first concern since it is their most important weapon. So they allowed it. Very begrudgingly.
- Griffin got new sisters and all three girls were thrilled about being a family officially now. They formed their own coven along with Faragonda too, who at the time was supposed to be a witch. However, she turned out to be a fairy so she could no longer be part of the coven officially. She still is, though, having their backs as much as she can in her position.
- Faragonda’s family rules one of the neighboring kingdoms. Yeah, the same assholes that tried to take dominion over the planet. Funnily enough, Faragonda and Griffin are looking to be besties which meant a peace treaty in the future aka if they wanted control, they had to act then. Well, it didn’t happen quite how they pictured it. Faragonda’s grandmother was killed by Emelyn’s coven and Faragonda’s mother was crowned queen. She decided that it was better to accept the peace and the slight advantage of Emalyn’s kingdom over hers for now because she didn’t have the resources to win a war against Emalyn currently.
- Lo and behold the next big shock came when it turned out that Faragonda wasn’t a witch. Her mother was furious. She was ready to disown her and Faragonda was staying with Griffin and Emalyn who were a bit shocked by the reveal because it wasn’t something you see every day but still supported her. However, the Council was rather thrilled by the turn of events and Faragonda’s mother saw in that the opportunity to gain the upper hand in the conflict between the two kingdoms so she did let Faragonda come home.
- Faragonda was immediately engaged (at the age of 15) to a light magic user, of course. Which to her was kind of a slap in the face, especially considering she had a thing going on with a boy with dark magic from her parents’ court. Well, so much for that. She was engaged to Saladin and was expected to behave like no one else existed for her while he wasn’t really returning the favor. They did come to get along eventually when he made it clear that he’d been doing it so that they would have the engagement revoked but that didn’t happen because the Council doesn’t care about feelings. They cleared things up and are now married. It’s not the love of the century but they get along well and have built respect in their relationship. It might be lacking a bit in passion but they both know they’re lucky with how well that marriage is working out, considering it was arranged only on political basis and no one cared about their happiness.
- Meanwhile, Griffin’s father died while he was away to represent the kingdom at a gathering with the Council and other planets. They said they’d been attacked and they hadn’t been able to save some of the people present most of which had been dark magic users or married to such. It was very fishy but there was nothing anyone could do to prove they were lying.
- Valtor is from Obsidian aka “the realm of all evil”. Meaning the realm of the Dark Dragon Fire. It was destroyed by the misguided army the Council had raised when Valtor was just a baby. His mother barely saved him by sending him to the Kingdom of frost which was about the last place someone would look for him. She was certain he would survive the temperatures thanks to the fire burning in him and hoped that someone would find him so that he wouldn’t die from starvation. He was found by a couple and they raised him until he turned 8. His powers started coming in then and they scared them so they abandoned him.
- He was found by Belladonna when her granddaughter - Icy (who was just 4 at the time), bumped into him as she was running away from her grandmother. His powers came out when he felt the ice magic of Belladonna and she was impressed by the power he had. So she took him in the palace and started “educating” him aka torturing him for hours on end with merciless practice in every area you can imagine. She made him wish he’d died a hungry death with how hard she pushed sometimes. She had her suspicions about the source of his power but the only way to confirm them was to bring him back to Obsidian and see if the planet would respond to the heir of its throne.
- She settled for manipulating him first to make sure he wouldn’t turn against her. She made sure he knew how horrible the Council was and made him study the history of the magical dimension until he knew every horror that the light side had subjected the dark side to. Then she led him to Obsidian and she had her suspicions confirmed. It was time to put that power to good use and take down the Council to replace them with her own rule.
- Valtor was sent to Emalyn’s palace to make his entrance as a distant cousin of Icy and he was specifically looking to start a conversation with Griffin and charm her enough to make her agree to help him with a project of his and get him a stay in the palace since there was a big celebration coming up for the 2800-year anniversary from the foundation of the kingdom and there were going to be a lot of Council members present. The perfect target to start his mission of getting rid of the Council.
- Valtor did his best to charm Griffin but it only seemed to work when he was showing something real and he got lucky to get that second dance. He adjusted his strategy, though, and soon they’d left the ball hall and were outside in the garden. They talked and Griffin introduced him to some of her favorite species of flowers which Valtor made “dance” for her. It was an illusion trick he’d learned from his aunt Lysslis.  Griffin figured that out but was still impressed.
- She also shared her passion for the stars with him which he decided to use against her and tell her about that “project” he had to do. It was about the connection between stars and magic and Griffin agreed to help him since that was her specialty. Her mother allowed him to stay despite not being fond of him and warning Griffin to keep away from him. She knew Belladonna still ruled the Kingdom of frost even if her daughter was the queen officially and she didn’t want to start an unnecessary feud with her since the witch was quite the formidable opponent by herself, and even more so when she joined her powers with her sisters. And the only threat Valtor seemed to pose was of getting Griffin to become fond of him but as much as Emalyn wanted to protect her daughter from that, she couldn’t risk starting a war just because she’d denied a perfectly reasonable request.
- Valtor and Griffin started working together but what neither of them realized at first was that they were also falling in love. Might have been the chess parties they played together when it was always hard to predict who would win. Or it might have been Griffin quoting poetry at him and him quoting right back, the feelings he put in the words just for authenticity, not because he was falling for her. Or it might have been the knowledge on magic they shared with each other and the way their powers seemed to flow together perfectly the more time they spent with each other.
- They found themselves kissing one day and Valtor knew that he had to stop because that wasn’t part of the plan, and Griffin knew she had to stop because of “honor” but they didn’t find it in themselves. They had their first time under the stars and it was magical (both their opinions, not just Griffin’s). It became a relationship which Valtor couldn’t make himself drop despite knowing how much it would hurt them both when he had to betray her. But she was the one good thing he had, the thing that made him want to wake up in the morning and he couldn’t give that up while he still had a choice. He knew Belladonna would come after all of them and raze Emalyn’s kingdom to the ground if he abandoned the plan, though, so he stuck to it.
- He couldn’t leave without seeing Griffin, though, because while no one had seen him assassinate the Council members, she’d most certainly recognized his magical signature. So he had to explain. Unfortunately for him, Emalyn had recognized his magic as well and she and her coven caught him in Griffin’s room before he could even get to explain to her. Emalyn handed him over to the Council because she didn’t want them thinking she had anything to do with the attack and she wanted to keep him away from her daughter, for he had the potential to drag her into the whole mess too.
- After the execution failed, Valtor and Griffin go back to Obsidian where Valtor revives the planet and with their converged magic they have it thriving again, plants and animals everywhere. They offer refuge to people who are sick of being trampled by the Council since Obsidian was announced a dead planet and is no longer under the jurisdiction of the Council. They repopulate the planet, get it back running and on the map. And the Council can’t do anything about it because they can in no way make their actions look evil. They just created life and revived a dead planet. And those are only things that the Dragon Fire can do. So the balance of power starts shifting, slowly but securely and together (along with Faragonda and Saladin, Ediltrude and Zarathustra, and other kingdoms that join them) they deal both with the Council and the Ancestral Witches to finally achieve peace between the two sides of magic.
I wrote a whole novel again. Oops.

Six Sentence Sunday
Tumblr media
This is from my fic about the post wedding party in “Sparks of Life” that has become much longer and is taking much longer to write than expected. Seeing how I feel my inspiration slipping, I decided to share some snippets. Six snippets, six sentences each, from different parts of the fic.
------
“I still think you should have let me order from a restaurant,” Valtor said as he looked at all the work Griffin and her mom had put into the feast while he’d been doing his best to suppress the feeling of uselessness rising in him and help them with whatever he could like setting the glasses on the table and folding napkins. And tasting different things although that was kind of unnecessary since both Griffin and Emalyn had chef skills and he was only there to confirm what they already knew – that the supper was perfect. Just like his new family.
He’d almost rooted the table out of his way when he’d collided with it while he’d been busy looking at the two of them as they helped each other, practically sharing thoughts as they worked in absolute sync, talking about other things instead–like the artistic talent of some of Griffin’s students and gardening–and weaving peacefulness in the atmosphere of the penthouse that he hoped he’d always get to feel. He’d hit the edge of the table hard, swearing as it grated against the floor and making them both look at him and laugh at the confused expression on his face as he’d been trying to figure out what the hell the table was doing in his way before realizing it was him that wasn’t where he thought he was. Griffin had joked she’d have to promise him a kiss for every successful trip to the table and back to keep him from hurting himself and destroying their preparations for the dinner.
------
“Ediltrude,” Griffin swiftly swept past him and moved to hug Ediltrude only to have her left hand grabbed and her momentum paused abruptly, causing her to stumble.
“Don’t Ediltrude me, show me the ring,” Ediltrude almost growled, the aggression in her voice not exactly real but not too faked either. She hated being kept out of the loop and Valtor was surprised she’d managed to make it for three weeks. Not that she’d had much of a choice unless she’d wanted to buy a ticket to Greece and hunt them down on the honeymoon, which he was sure wasn’t completely past her so they had to be grateful for her commendable show of restraint. “Holy crap, Griffin, it’s beautiful!” Ediltrude said, her voice softening immediately at the sight of the gleaming gold on Griffin’s finger even with the loud excitement still in it. “And it looks so beautiful on you,” Ediltrude said, turning Griffin’s hand in all directions so that she could take a good look at the ring and making him wonder if perhaps he shouldn’t jump in to make sure she wouldn’t hurt his wife.
------
“No hug for me?” Zarathustra spoke as she finally saw her chance to have Griffin’s attention on herself now that Ediltrude wasn’t hoarding all of it. Though, Valtor was sure it hadn’t been intentional. Ediltrude was greedy for affection but she didn’t mind sharing it with her sister. “I’ll just go then if I’m unwanted,” Zarathustra said as she turned to head back to the elevator, her joke obvious as such but it did hit Valtor hard still when he knew the twins were practically Griffin’s sisters in fate and had only felt like belonging when they’d found her.
It seemed to have a similar effect on Griffin as she shot after Zarathustra faster than a bullet to kill any thought of the kind that might have sprang to life unwanted in her friend’s mind and wrapped her in her arms, squeezing her like a python. Which Zarathustra was probably pretty used to considering the way Ediltrude’s snakes liked to show affection even if they were a different species. And Ediltrude herself hugged pretty much the same way, her arms going around your neck when she wanted something and squeezing just hard enough to make you consider your answer carefully.
------
“I’m here,” Griffin said as she held on to Zarathustra, her hand moving over the other woman’s back in a soothing motion. “Just excuse me for a moment while I figure out what scheme you and Ediltrude are running,” she said, her voice turning mischievous as she disentangled herself from Zarathustra–after she’d relaxed enough for Griffin to leave her alone–and ran to Ediltrude who held the gift bag out of her reach–a task none too easy when Griffin turned into a bird of prey but the heels were giving her some height advantage currently–and shoved her away. “Give it to me, Ediltrude, or I won’t show you pictures of the wedding and the honeymoon,” she threatened, a malicious note sneaking into her tone.
Valtor shook his head at Ediltrude’s outraged screech and the “bitch” that followed. It drew a gasp from Emalyn that was more comic rather than scandalized or offended on her daughter’s behalf and tempted him to pay more attention to the cat fight but he resisted and trusted Griffin to handle herself as he made his way to where Zarathustra was pretty much having a reaction similar to his to the squabble between her friend and sister.
“Need an extra dose of hugs?” he asked, allowing a small grin on his face when her gaze immediately softened like he’d seen it do when she was talking about her job and, more specifically, her students.
------
The doors opened and Faragonda pulled Hagen inside the penthouse, making Valtor bite the inside of his cheek to keep from swearing again. Of course they arrived exactly at this moment when both he and Griffin had had their emotions pulled all over the place and needed some time to collect themselves. Of fucking course.
He did his best to keep from accusing the universe of hating him–he did have Griffin, after all, and he would always be immensely grateful for that–and moved to join his wife as she greeted her best friend.
“Finally,” Griffin said as she threw herself at Faragonda’s already open arms and Valtor could agree with the sentiment as much as he resented it thanks to what came hand in hand with it. Quite literally since Hagen had been holding on to Faragonda and looked like someone had snatched his dessert away now that she’d let go of him to greet Griffin which only made Valtor want to throw him out of the penthouse. Preferably out the balcony.
------
Hagen threw him in shock as he offered him a hand–both literally and figuratively–and it took him a second to process before he could initiate a corresponding action. “Congratulations,” Hagen said as he shook his hand briefly but not in a way that would indicate that he wanted nothing more than to be as far away from him as possible–even when they both knew that to be true for both of them–making him narrow his eyes at him. “What?” Hagen asked as he noticed the look he was giving him, the snappy tone beginning to creep in instantly and Valtor knew it would be best to just drop it but they were already past the point where that was possible.
“You sound sincere,” Valtor said, getting the words out calmly and at an even tone as he wasn’t trying to start a fight. He was just puzzled since he hadn’t expected that. While he didn’t imagine that Hagen was spending his days fantasizing different scenarios of him being plunged into absolute despair, he also didn’t expect him to care about him finding happiness. He even thought Hagen would be rooting a bit for him to get what he deserved which according to him probably was a punch in the face since the robotics engineer had made it clear that to him Valtor was just a spoiled asshole and a snob.
------
Yeah, I cheated a bit and gave seven sentences in three of those excerpts... And in that spirit, it is the 8th of March so let’s make them eight (I just don’t know how many sentences these are)
------
“Stop hoarding all the attention to yourselves,” Ediltrude scolded as she swept in past him and attacked Faragonda with another one of her killer hugs which she gladly returned, surprise crossing her face just for a moment before she was all softness again and returning the affection without a beat of hesitation. “I haven’t seen you since that night of truth,” Ediltrude said, a devious smirk taking over her face but her gaze moved to Hagen before anyone could react. “Hi, Hagen,” she said, the smile definitely turning predatory now. “I’ve been dying to see you,” she said, moving to wrap an arm around his shoulders just like a snake that was waiting to strike. Oh, this would be interesting. He could tell that even if he was a bit lost currently.
------
This time at least it seemed to dawn on Hagen exactly what minefield he’d walked into as he turned to look at Faragonda, his gaze filling with betrayal as she obviously hadn’t told him and he might have won himself a ticket out of his ultimatum for the night which wouldn’t be exactly the best news since that was the only thing keeping them being begrudgingly amicable towards each other. But of course that was the disastrous effect of the twins. It got out of hand in ways you couldn’t even imagine, not to mention predict, and nothing could stop the madness they’d started from unfolding. So they could only let it play out and try to contain the damage.

“The Heart Wants What It Was Promised by the Stars”
Summary: Griffin fell in love with Valtor under the stars but now she has to watch him get executed in broad daylight for an act of terrorism he most certainly committed. She knows that, knows his guilty, but still can't accept the fate of their love. Did the stars only lead her to him so that she'd suffer?
This was an experiment on my part to complete a writing challenge I came across on tumblr. The goal was to write a piece in which one of the characters is royalty (+ bonus points if it involved an execution) with length between 200 and 1000 words. You can tell how well that last part went. We get a new AU, though!
Griffin stepped on the terrace on her mother’s left, the noise from the crowd like an angry sea splashing all around her but she remained untouched by it, her gaze focused on him as he walked towards his execution. He was still as beautiful as the night she’d met him even now that the title of terrorist had ripped off the mask of gentleness and well-intentioned power flowing from him. He’d been anything but that, and she hadn’t seen it until it’d been too late. The people, her people, were rightfully outraged and crazed in their desire for justice, for he’d dragged them into the war with the Council by executing a strike against members of it on their land, and yet, she couldn’t hear their cries of vengeance over those of her own heart that had been bleeding and tearing itself apart from the moment he’d gotten caught as he’d come back to her because he hadn’t wanted to leave her with the wrong impression. As if there’d been anything right about him. And she had to shut up the feelings she still let him awaken in her.
“Quiet your heart, Griffin,” her mother had told her when she’d come to get her for the execution. She had to be there and oversee the punishment of the man who’d dared hurt the people she was a princess to by putting them in the line of political fire. But she couldn’t stand the thought when she was no longer the ruler of her own heart. “You already let him make enough noise with it,” her mother had said, scolded her, almost hissed at her, in a tone that wasn’t typical for her. It had scared her with all the change he’d brought in their lives just like that. Because she’d allowed him. He’d told her he wanted to change the world and she’d eaten every word, letting him poison her with his sweet promises and nothing could’ve saved her from him. Not even her mother with her will of iron. Not when she’d gladly surrendered herself to his pretty face and his touch of magic.
She’d met him at a party, a distant cousin of Icy, the crown princess of the kingdom of frost, and he’d entered her life so smoothly she never would’ve guessed how hard and jarring the fallout would be. She’d given him a dance, and then another one, and then the whole night that they’d spent talking and laughing and flirting under the stars. Harmlessly, she’d thought, even when she’d known he’d been nothing but danger, her heart skipping beats and rushing as if to leave her chest and go to him. And she’d given it. She’d given him her heart, her love and what was worst of all for a woman of her status – her virginity.
She had to stay proper and chaste so that they could marry her off to a self-righteous, self-absorbed spoiled brat of a prince from a kingdom with light magic that the Council would pick for her and she would have no choice but to accept and let them kill her spirit by making her a tamed wife if she didn’t want to get her kingdom and her mother in trouble. And even if she could keep her crown and not have her kingdom annexed, she would lose all her power and agency. So she’d let him be the first to touch her body, truly touch it with his voice and hands, and soul, and she’d wanted him to be the last to do so. She still did. She was all his. And he was on death row. And her heart was writhing in pain, wailing its sorrow to all who’d listen but there was no one there for her. They were all gathered to witness his death, and as their princess she was obliged to be happy when her people were.
It was a happy day for them, for the whole magical dimension. A dark magic kingdom had caught a dark magic terrorist–though, those were the only kind, or at least so the Council told them–and they were “finally” joining the side of light and securing the alliance between dark and light magic by doing good. It would all be forgotten the minute another kingdom refused to bow to the obvious discrimination of their kind and it wouldn’t matter one bit what they’d done when the Council came out with their propaganda and tried to pit them against each other, most certainly with the very fact that they were hunting down their own and executing them.
If it had truly been an alliance they’d sought, there would be light magic users with them now and Faragonda would be standing at her side but she couldn’t even have the support of her best friend, for all light magic users had been forbidden from attending. To shine the spotlight where it needed to be, the Council had said. It was to assure that the blame for any death couldn’t be thrown their way. And she’d begged her mother not to do it, to let the Council handle the whole thing, but she’d told her she couldn’t. They wouldn’t let her, wouldn’t risk angering anyone by getting their hands dirty. They were just happy to pull the strings behind the curtains and get the royals at each other’s throats. And they let them, each wrapped in their own problems and refusing to help the others stand together against the real monster. It was painful and enraging.
She could feel Ediltrude and Zarathustra’s quiet presence behind her, her adopted sisters offering all the support they could silently through their magical bond, for they knew her tragedy. They didn’t understand it–no one could because no one understood him–but they loved her more than was healthy for them and she knew she could count on them. Always. The knowledge had brought her comfort in her darkest hours but she didn’t know what to do when the light was shining in her eyes, hurtful and threatening, promising a period of thriving for their enemies.
Her fists clenched tighter, her nails sinking in her palms and she only put more force into it, aiming to draw blood. Both to keep herself grounded and as a rebellion. If she had to suffer it would be on her own terms, her torture would be one of her own design and she would bow to no one. Just like she’d chosen to walk into love with a dark wizard with powerful magic and promises too good to be true. She’d known that as she’d opened her heart for him–she wasn’t stupid–but it hadn’t stopped her. If anything, it’d made her want to love him more, cut her heart open and pour out all of her love in the blood spilling from the split organ. It would’ve been a sacrifice she was willing to make, for no one dictated her fate. No one had the right to tell her how to live her life and how to love her wizard when they’d kept telling her her magic was unnatural when it’d come from the Great Dragon just like its light counterpart. And he had the fire of the Dragon, all woven in him and making him burn, making her want to burn with him, and she would. She would burn away when her love perished.
Her mother’s hand covered hers and the gentle touch had her muscles relax. It was an instinct she couldn’t fight. Her mother had always been her light, the one who’d taught her how to fight for herself and be independent. And it was what pained her so much when she watched her getting trampled by the Council but she had no choice if she wanted to keep her daughters safe, if she wanted to keep her people safe. A burden that would befall Griffin with her mother’s death the inevitability of which she shoved out of her mind with indescribable force–it was too painful on the background of her father’s untimely demise and the current situation threatening to take away the love of her life–and clutched tighter at her hand to ground herself in the present where at least that tragedy hadn’t happened yet.
She didn’t want that, any of it, didn’t want anyone’s death. The Great Dragon had created all life so they had to be able to get along and coexist peacefully. But the Council was spreading death sneakily and so was he, only he was doing it openly. And loving him would bring more of it, had brought more of it, for he’d come back to her when he should have fled, yet she couldn’t help her feelings, circling around him like he was the sun of her planet.
He looked up at her, as if he’d read her thoughts, and maybe the crowd quited down, or it was the pulse pounding in her ears and the slipping of her mind when her emotions took a hold of her being but she couldn’t hear anything when he couldn’t speak to her, just the echoes of the words he’d spoken in the past coming back to haunt her with the knowledge she couldn’t find it in herself to doubt them even when it’d turned out he was a skillful liar. He looked at her and smiled at her, his eyes meeting hers from all that distance away as if there were no other people, as if he wasn’t headed to a certain death, wasn’t kneeling at its threshold ready to tumble in when his head rolled on the ground, and she forgot sense itself even when it had been her companion ever since she could remember. All she could remember currently were his lips tracing kisses on her skin and murmuring declarations of love in her ears between her strained moans that she’d tried to hold back both for their safety and so that she could hear the elusive words and his fingers caressing her curves, those of her body and those of her thoughts as he’d listened to her, holding her hand to encourage her to venture further into her dreams and dare to want more, dare to want a better future for their kind and for herself. And it would all die with him.
Her pulse sped up, her heart rising high in her throat just like the blade made of magic that was ready to execute him. It was sort of a special treatment that Griffin had never seen before. Granted, there hadn’t been many executions in their kingdom, her mother a respected but kind ruler even though she could be fearsome, and even her father’s death hadn’t changed that as she hadn’t let it darken her heart despite the suspicious circumstances, and she’d also done her best to keep Griffin and her sisters away from the bloodshed.
It was different this time, though. They had to be there whether they liked it or not. Though, Griffin knew she would’ve gone even if she hadn’t had to, she couldn’t have missed seeing him one last time if that was all they’d get. And considering his crimes and his magic, he was not only chained in magical cuffs that would suppress his powers and keep him from using them to escape, but also getting executed by a special blade that was supposed to cut through any magic in his being trying to resist it and destroy his soul too. He was too powerful and they had doubts he’d be able to build himself a new body if they let his soul roam still after his death. So her mother and her councilors who were also her coven had combined their magic into forging a blade that would tear his soul to shreds even the Dragon Fire wouldn’t be able to revive the moment it sank into his skin. It would be agonizing and terrifying, and–according to the consensus–exactly what he deserved. And she knew there was no way of escaping it, even if he had his magic at his disposal, for he stood no chance against her mother and her convergence with her coven. They were the most powerful witches in the kingdom and their synchronized magic was a weapon their enemies were lucky not to know.
The blade of magic sank down and Griffin’s heart did the same, dizziness filling her mind as the memories flashed in front of her eyes and she thought she’d fall as everything inside her felt empty only for a burst of energy to fill her until it was painful, tearing at her flesh like lightning and a loud crack sending her heart in panic. The thought she’d broken in half under the intensity of the emotions quickly lent its place to shock as she realized it wasn’t her that was the victim of it.
The black crystal of magic that was supposed to take his life was crumbling into dust under a greenish violet vortex of power that looked so familiar to her it felt like she was looking into a mirror. It was her magic demolishing the dreadful presence of the thing that threatened to take him away from her and she took a step back, fear of it draining her to feed itself and its mad force trying to fill her but there was no place for it among the emotions already running through her and erupting into a flow that only fueled the magic at work until there was nothing left of the black doom her mother and her sister witches had taken so much effort to forge.
The surge of power relented a bit then, letting her pull it back and inside herself where it slid under her skin and remained there, ready for a battle she could feel coming in the deadly silence only broken by the mad, triumphant beating of her heart when she’d protected the love it sheltered. And the sound of magically reinforced metal cracking and hitting the ground.
Valtor was free, rolling his shoulders and rubbing his wrists for a moment but not wasting too much time on that as he let his magic burst out of him and reach for hers, the two tangling deeply and truly like they’d never done before. They’d been too wary, only letting their magic barely on the surface and feeling the other’s like a ghost touching their own ghost. It was all they–or at least she–had dared to go for, crippled by the fear of the pain her actions could bring her people. And it had been a good thing because their union was so potent that a pulse of magic came off of their joined powers as they sank into each other and wove themselves into one, the energy bursting from that bond sending the crowd to the ground. And not just the crowd.
Her mother’s hand wasn’t in her own anymore–though, that might have happened earlier but she’d been too full of feelings for him cutting her off from everything else to tell–and her sisters’ calming presence was drowned out by his power floating all around her like a moon circling its planet. She had nothing tying her to her life and everything tying her to him.
Valtor seemed to have had the same realization as he tapped into their entangled magic and drew enough power to rise into the air and fly up to her. He came closer, almost drawing her to fly off the terrace and meet him halfway with the self-assured, confident energy coming off of him that had seemed arrogant at first but she’d come to love when it’d given her the strength to imagine a life for herself where she wasn’t always coordinating all of her actions with what the Council wanted and it had inspired her to reach for that life. And their joint magic felt just like freedom with how effortlessly it flowed around them and the endless feeling she got from it, the only thing holding her back from taking her place at his side being the unconscious people all around and, most importantly, her family. She couldn’t leave them just like that.
“What happened?” Griffin forced herself to turn to her logical side and demand an explanation before she allowed herself to fall into the softness of his being that she could feel through the edge of angry magic coming off of him and reach to stroke his face. That would be the death of every rationality and that was what had gotten them in the whole mess in the first place. She couldn’t allow the intoxicating feeling of shared magic and emotions take over her brain when it was her last saving grace with how hopelessly in love with him she was.
“Don’t you know, Griffin?” Valtor spoke, his tone mocking as it usually was but the obvious sense of superiority retreated when it was her name in his mouth. Just like the malicious and taunting shade left his gaze every time he looked at her. “Love is the most powerful magic of all,” he said, letting the word ring through the quietness around them now that it was just the two of them. But it always was just the two of them when he was with her and nothing else existed, and her world was beautiful with the freedom he gave her when he dragged her to the depths of her emotions where no rays of light could reach and scorch her and his flames painted beautiful pictures for her in the darkness, making it their own, making it her home that was safe from an outside invasion.
Griffin swallowed, a frightening realization creeping up her spine and waiting for the right moment to snap it in half and leave her paralyzed. “You were using me?” she asked, allowed herself to give him the opportunity to lie to her and weave her in his net once more. All she was praying for was that he’d want to do it, that he’d still deem her useful and wouldn’t toss her aside now that he’d gotten what he needed from her. It made sense, of course, why he’d gone after her. Who better to manipulate than the princess, the daughter of the woman who would have the task to execute him? The blood relation made her mother’s magic vulnerable to attacks from her own and, combined with the power she’d gotten from her heart, had been the end of the weapon meant to send him into oblivion.
Valtor gave a small smile with a hint of sadness woven in it and it had her heart jumping to help him get the mirth back in it but she pushed it down as it’d already caused enough trouble. “Even I can’t fake such a pure bond,” he said, his eyes on hers still, locking the rest of the world away where it couldn’t disturb them while he got the chance to convince her in his feelings. “You feel it, don’t you? The tangle of our powers?” he raised a hand and buried his fingers in her hair as if to illustrate what was happening to them on a magical level and she leaned into his touch readily. “That’s not something that can be forged.” The ice of his gaze looked so pleading, begging her to give it soft light from her own golden eyes that wouldn’t turn it into a hostile ocean for him to drown in. “I love you, Griffin,” he said, the words making their way inside her and wrapping her heart into a softness unlike even the finest silk her fingers had ever touched, and it made her want to cry, the tears filling her eyes to fall and soothe any wounds the burn of her judgment might have left on his soul.
They froze in their place when she sensed another presence invading their bubble and forcing her senses to start perceiving the world again and everything that came from outside. Her mother.
“I warned her to stay away from you,” she said, her gaze focused on Valtor when Griffin turned to look at her, forcing Valtor’s hand out of her hair, but to her surprise there was no threat in it. There was anger, of course, but beneath those flames there was worry that had always flown from her mother’s heart when it came to her or her sisters as she only scolded them for their own good. Griffin had never doubted that. “Now I can’t protect her anymore,” she spoke, the sound like a slap in Griffin’s face with the truth it forced in her head.
She’d saved his life in front of the whole kingdom which put her on an equal level with him now. She’d opposed the Council’s decision that he had to die and she’d be claimed a terrorist as well. And even her title of princess wouldn’t be able to outweigh that. Not even her mother’s title of queen would be able to do it. They’d be out for her head now too, and she hadn’t even for a moment stopped to think what that would cause her mother and her sisters, and Faragonda, and her people. She’d been blinded by her feelings and it was too late now. Her heart had let her down again and she was safe in his hands but what about all the people she had responsibility for?
“You’ll have to do it for me,” her mother spoke again, startling her once more, for she’d been so opposed to the whole relationship with Valtor from the very beginning and she’d never fallen for Griffin’s reassurances that it was innocent and just a friendship. She’d known what fire burned there and she’d been afraid it would turn on all of them, and rightfully so. So Griffin had expected that her mother would try to hunt Valtor down and finish the execution she’d interrupted but instead she was... entrusting her to him? Her heart swayed in confused happiness, for she didn’t want to fight her mother.
“Of course, Queen Emalyn,” Valtor said, bowing his head slightly with respect. “You have my word,” he said, striking Griffin with the promise contained in that statement. She’d seen the skillful deception he’d woven around them all unfold but she knew that when he gave his word, he kept to it. He’d never told her anything that wasn’t true even if he’d withheld a lot of information from her while they’d been working side by side on their shared project and falling in love. And if she with her distrustful nature could believe him, she hoped her mother could be convinced as well.
Her mother kept her gaze on him until she’d made sure of his honesty and even Griffin had started feeling uncomfortable before moving her gaze to her daughter. “Griffin, I wanted to save you from being persecuted, my darling daughter,” she said as she placed her hands on Griffin’s shoulders, her grip so light, so loving and gentle that it made Griffin’s eyes fill with the tears that had retreated once again when her love for her mom spilled from her heart as well. “It seems that I couldn’t save you from your love, though, and perhaps that is a good thing despite all the danger it puts you into,” her mother said, her own eyes filling with tears now. “You have a path written in the stars, darling, and they’ll guide you down it whether either one of us likes it or not,” her mother said, expressing distrust in the stars for the first time in Griffin’s life since she’d always taught her to trust them and their light, and the magic coming from a sky full of stars. It only spoke of her mother’s worry for her and she wished to comfort her but she had no idea how to do it when it was true her fate was uncertain now.
“I can promise you nothing will harm your daughter as long as I have the power of our love flowing through my veins and charging my flames,” Valtor cut in, perhaps not in the right moment but Griffin still felt profound gratitude at his attempt to soothe her mother’s pain even when she wasn’t certain how successful any endeavor towards that cause could be, for she’d always worried for her daughters, and that instinct had most certainly been reinforced right now that the danger was more real and palpable than ever and making it hard for Griffin to believe she would ever have the chance to be a mother herself, or even get to live past next Tuesday.
Emalyn looked at him, the hard gaze of the queen befalling him like it rarely did any of her subjects and it always scared anyone who’d fallen victim to it with the criticism it harbored in it but Valtor didn’t budge and the emotion in his own eyes didn’t harden in an attempt to resist the attack until the look in her mother’s eyes softened. Just a tad but it was almost tangible as the pressure drained from the atmosphere and melted away, allowing Valtor’s flames that had proven truthful to her to warm the air around them with the promise he was giving her mother.
“This isn’t how I imagined giving my daughter away,” she spoke, making Griffin’s heart jump once again, leaving her with the feeling that it hadn’t landed in the right place, that it hadn’t landed at all and was reeling freely in space, uncaring even of the danger looming over their heads when it was full of happiness. “I don’t support any part of how this all happened, least of all the one that put my daughter in grave danger,” she said, her gaze full of ice needles all directed at Valtor and her voice lacking the sweetness it usually carried when she spoke in her honey-soft manner, “but I don’t have anything else to do other than let you protect her because I certainly can’t do it now. Perhaps I should have taken action earlier to ensure your union wouldn’t be overshadowed by all the ugliness it is accompanied by now. And while I understand your desire for a change in our unfair world, you are going about it the wrong way and I am imploring you to stop before you’ve made my daughter pay the price, if it isn’t too late for that already.”
Her words seemed to hit Valtor hard, making his head bow and his mouth fall open to release the air that had gotten trapped inside him but he quickly seemed to come to his senses and looked her in the eyes. “Queen-”
Emalyn interrupted him before he could say anything. “I know what a love like yours is which is why I’m not trying to stop it,” she said, looking him dead in the eyes and Griffin felt a crushing emptiness inside her now that her mother mentioned the absence at her side. “I lost my husband and I don’t want you going through the same pain. But most of all, I don’t want to lose my daughter,” she said, the firmness of her voice nowhere to be found now that it almost broke just at the thought. And Griffin herself didn’t want to think of what it would be like for her mother to have her greatest fear come true. Even if it was still happening in a sense as she needed to flee from her birth palace and from her family and friends, and there was no telling when–if–she’d see them again, which especially hurt now that she couldn’t even say goodbye to her sisters who were still unconscious from the pulse of their shared magic like most everyone else except for her mother and a few of her covenmates who were standing a respectable distance away and giving them their privacy, loyal to their queen and princess.
Valtor’s own gaze softened at her mother’s confession of selfishness that she never really allowed herself but he seemed to understand. “I don’t want to lose her either so I’ll make sure neither of us will have to go through that torture,” he said and offered his hand and it was such a powerful gesture, for he’d kept away from contact with anyone and especially her mother while he’d been planning his scheme but something had changed now and he was ready to let go of anything that could put Griffin in danger and form an alliance with her mom the purpose of which was to protect her.
Griffin felt her mother’s fingers closing around hers and bringing her hand up, placing it into Valtor’s awaiting palm and the contact with his warm skin washed over her like an elixir for her soul that had been ripped apart by misery ever since she’d seen him being dragged to the dungeons, defeated by her mother’s magic and that of her coven. It was so overwhelming she felt the tears fall, landing on her mother’s hand and chasing it away from hers but only so that she could wipe them from her cheeks.
She looked at her mom and the teary smile she got practically had her falling into her arms and wrapping her free one around her while she never let go of Valtor’s hand, not wanting to feel him slip away even for a second after what they’d just been through and what still awaited them in the very near future. It was a hug that lasted seconds but they still felt like decades when she had all the warmth of her mother spilling into her body and trying to tangle itself into her and follow her wherever she’d go and she wanted to soak up as much of it as she could, for she’d have Valtor’s flames from now on but it wasn’t the same. It was the support she’d thought she didn’t have but had always been there and she would miss greatly now that she had to part with it and leave her mom behind. But she had to do it not only for herself, but for her kingdom too. They could eventually come to see Valtor as something other than a threat and accept him as her choice of a husband but the Council would never forgive the treason and she couldn’t drag her people deeper into that hole than she already had.
“I don’t think you deserve her,” Emalyn said when she disentangled herself from Griffin and looked at Valtor, “but she already gave you her heart so that doesn’t matter. Make sure to take care of her, though, because if you don’t, you’ll wish her love had never saved you from this execution,” she said, her voice low and so menacing like Griffin had never heard it before. And she didn’t dare protest because she could see in her mother’s clenched jaw and rigid posture, her back slightly bent over under the invisible load they’d piled on her shoulders without thinking, that she had her own emotions to deal with and she had every right to feel the way she did. So she didn’t speak a word of it.
“I will,” Valtor said, only pulling her closer when her mother released her and wrapping her in his arms protectively, only affected positively by her mother’s words it seemed as he wished to prove he deserved the trust she was giving him. “I will make sure she’s happy and that all the trouble I caused all of you was worth it,” he said and Griffin could feel the determination burning in his heart as she placed her palm on top of it. It was so warm she could cry, but not from pain. “We need to go,” Valtor said, to her mother who nodded before he turned to look at her.
“Where are we going?” Griffin asked as she looked at him, terror trying to creep in her voice when she remembered all that was waiting for them, all the danger and obstacles. There was no way the Council would just leave them be and she already felt tired from the fight she knew was coming, for she’d been in it ever since she’d been born. But it all retreated when Valtor’s hand cupped her cheek, the touch protective and making her lean into it and the safety it provided as it shielded her from the worry with the reminder of the shared power they could yield. It changed everything, for she wasn’t alone anymore, and she knew they would face what was coming for them head on like she’d wanted to for so long.
“Home,” Valtor said, the word filling her whole being with happiness that burned with its intensity and the promise of a place she could call her own made all the better by the knowledge that that was his heart. She lived there now and they had the power to change the world to fit their visions now that they sheltered each other inside their souls and could combine their powers.
