McLaren form new driver development programme led by ex-driver Emanuele Pirro
McLaren have formed a new junior driver programme to be led by former McLaren F1 test driver, Benetton and Scuderia Italia F1 driver and Le Mans 24 Hours winner Emanuele Pirro. The illustrious Formula 1 team's new Driver Development programme includes IndyCar driver Pato O'Ward, McLaren F1 reserve driver Alex Palou – both of whom have tested and practised for the F1 team in the past – and highly-rated American-born youngster Ugo Ugochukwu. 2023 F1 Academy grid: Introducing the drivers and teams for the all-female series’ inaugural season McLaren will develop drivers from karting to professional series with a view to promote them to F1. The team say that their new programme creates the potential for IndyCar or Formula E drivers to test for the F1 team and gain experience, or even contend for a race seat at the F1 team. Italian driver Pirro, who tested for McLaren for three seasons from 1988 – the season in which the Honda-powered MP4/4 took all but one victory at the hands of Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost – leads the new McLaren Programme. 2021 IndyCar champion Alex Palou turned laps for McLaren in first practice for the 2022 United States Grand Prix in his F1 weekend debut “I am thrilled by this assignment for several reasons," said Pirro, who thanked Team Principal Andrea Stella and McLaren CEO Zak Brown. "McLaren played a crucial role in my career by giving me the opportunity to earn an F1 drive and to elevate myself to a higher level by working alongside Senna, Prost and [Gerhard] Berger. “Together with my team, my role will assist in creating a state-of-the-art programme, selecting the best possible drivers and providing them with all the tools they need to make the best use of their talent. Furthermore, embed them in the McLaren mission, vision and values and hopefully, have one of them progress to the F1 team. “An important asset for us are the IndyCar and Formula E teams, which will give extra opportunities for a professional career to our McLaren Driver Development members. Miami seems to have changed something in the way a lot of people are talking about Max, has anyone else noticed? Where before it was mainly about how is super-talented he is, Miami seems to have caused a next step in the conversation. Most notably for me, former f1 drivers and team bosses are talking about him now becoming/being part of the GOAT conversation as if it is all of a sudden normal for people from the F1 world. A few examples I have come across:
I raced against Schumacher, when he used to win everything for Ferrari , and I don't think there has been anyone as strong as Micheal in managing the race. He remains number one to this day. But if we talk about driving talent, Max Verstappen is at the same level. He was devastating in the Miami weekend [...]If we talk about precocity, considering his age and what he has already done, he is even ahead of the greats of the past who preceded him. ".

La 24 ore di Le Mans 2023

Il Centenario della 24 ore di Le Mans, previsto per il 10 e 11 giugno, vede  la categoria regina tornare ai fasti di un tempo, con ben 16 Hypercar di 7 costruttori diversi presenti nella entry list e le due Ferrari 499P #50 e #51 che sfidano le Toyota #7 e #8 e di riportare il Cavallino Rampante sul podio della 24 ore di Le Mans. Infatti le Hyperpole del 8 giugno hanno visto qualificate, tra le Hypercar, le Ferrari #50 e #51, le Toyota #7 e #8, le Porsche #5 e #75 e le Cadillac #3 e #2. Dopo le polemiche successive agli incidenti e alle difficoltà riscontrate  nel portare in temperatura le gomme nella 6 ore di Spa è arrivata in via eccezionale la deroga per poter scaldare le coperture attraverso armadi riscaldanti nella 24 ore di Le Mans, in modo da salvaguardare la sicurezza di tutti i piloti chiamati a guidare anche di notte con temperature molto basse. Oltre alle 16 Hypercar prenderanno il via 24 LMP2 e 21 GTE, con una Nascar infiltrata dato che è tornata la wild card per le auto innovative, riservata alla Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 della nuova generazione e a condurla sarà un trio composto da Jimmie Johnson, Mike Rockenfeller e Jenson Button. Costruito nel 1965 attorno al tracciato già esistente della 24 ore, il Bugatti Grand Prix Circuit si trova a 5 km a sud della città di Le Mans e 200 km a sud-ovest di Parigi e ha ospitato il Gran Premio dalla fine degli anni Sessanta, ma un grave incidente che vide protagonista il  pilota spagnolo Alberto Puig nel 1995 lo vide cancellato dal calendario fino al 2000, dopo una serie di miglioramenti alla sicurezza. Le Mans è una pista stretta dominata dalle curve della prima marcia, basate sulla frenata in ritardo e sull’accelerazione brusca, e può ospitare comodamente fino a 100.000 spettatori. La città francese e il circuito di Le Mans sono il simbolo di sport motoristico, avendo ospitato per anni gare su due e quattro ruote ed eventi di resistenza. Di incidenti e tragedie alla 24 ore di Le Mans ce ne sono stati molti, il più famoso è sicuramente quello del 1955, dove la Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR di Pierre Levegh fini tra la folla dopo un contatto con Lance Macklin e  Levegh e 83 persone morirono, mentre altre 120 rimasero ferite. Dopo quell’episodio Mercedes decise di ritirarsi dalle corse sino al 1987 e la Svizzera  decise addirittura eventi motoristici, divieto è ancora oggi in vigore. Fino al 1969 erano solo due piloti ad alterarsi per 24 ore, dal 1970 fu introdotto il terzo pilota e all’inizio del decennio successivo ci fu il trionfo di Porsche, il primo di una lunga serie,  infatti la casa tedesca ha il record di successi della Le Mans, ben 18. Una di queste, quella del 1997, fu vinta con al volante  Tom Kristensen, nato ad Hobro ormai quasi 50 anni fa, detiene la maggior parte dei record di questa corsa, infatti ne ha vinte ben nove, di cui sei di fila. Insieme ad Emanuele Pirro, ma soprattutto con l’amico Dindo Capello, Kristensen ha stabilito record su record, trionfando per l’ultima volta nel 2013, dove vinse anche il neonato mondiale WEC. Furono ben sette i successi con la casa dei Quattro Anelli, gli altri due erano con Porsche e con Bentley, tutti marchi parte del Gruppo Volkswagen. A fine 2014 Tom decise di chiudere la carriera, dopo aver vinto 58 gare ed essere salito sul podio ben 145 volte su 349 corse disputate in carriera. Happy Birthday Scottish Race Car driver Dario Franchitti.
Franchitti was born and raised in Bathgate, West Lothian, he attended Stewart’s Melville in Edinburgh
Dario started off racing carts - and at 11 years old, he won the Scottish Junior Championship. He followed that up with a British Junior Championship in 1985 and 1986. In 1988 won the Scottish Senior Title. From there, he moved on to formula car racing in 1992, where he joined Paul Stewart Racing. That year he was named the McLaren/Autosport Young Driver of the Year. After winning the championship in 1993, Dario moved up and won the British Formula Three Championship in 1994. Dario continued to race in Europe until 1996, where he was sponsored by AMG Racing and drove a Mercedes.
In 1996, Dario progressed to Champ Car racing in the US. After starting off with Hogan Racing, he switched to Team KOOL Green in 1998. In two seasons with Team KOOL Green, he won six races and seven poles. A crash during a practice run limited Dario’s progress for the next two years, only winning one race in 2001. Dario joined the Andretti Green team in the IndyCar Series in 2003. While his first few years were hindered by injury, he still was able to capture a couple of victories in 2004. In May 2007, Dario’s career reached an all-time high as he took home the Indianapolis 500! He also won his first career championship title in a final-race title decider with Scott Dixon. At the end of the season, Franchitti was named as BBC Scotland’s Sports Personality of the Year. In 2008 e went onto Nascar but found it difficult to make an impact and returned to the Indy circuit winning his second title in 2009, gain in a final race championship decider against Dixon and Team Penske’s Ryan Briscoe. He retained the title in 2010 and won his third consecutive and 4th overall title came in 2011.
On 6th October 2013, Franchitti was involved in a serious crash in the Grand Prix of Houston, when his car flew into catch-fencing after contact with the car of Takuma Sato. Franchitti suffered 2 fractured vertebrae, a broken ankle, and a concussion in the crash. Later he would learn that he had forgotten some of his past. A month later, on November 14, Franchitti announced his immediate retirement from motor racing on medical advice; he retired with 31 victories from 265 starts in his American open-wheel racing career, a tally which put him in a tie for ninth on the all-time wins list
The story doesn’t end their though as Dario added an unusual string to his bow in March 2020 he, became an esports champion in a special Legends Trophy race.
The event took part in a virtual race with famous names from across the ages of motorsport took part in a simulated race at Silverstone’s National Circuit. With all the drivers using Brabham BT44s, Franchitti inherited the lead when Juan Pablo Montoya collided with Emanuele Pirro in the first turn, he held the lead for the rest of the race, other drivers included Emerson Fittipaldi and David Brabham.
Franchitti married American actress Ashley Judd in December 2001 at Skibo Castle near Dornoch, they divorced in 2013 and remain on friendly terms.he has has since married Eleanor Robb, an Englishwoman. They have two daughters: Sofia and Valentina.  
These days, Dario Franchitti serves in a driver mentor/ coach role with the organisation he raced for in INDYCAR from 2009-2013.

The 1989 German Grand Prix, otherwise officially known as the LI Mobil 1 Großer Preis von Deutschland, was the ninth round of the 1989 FIA Formula One World Championship, staged at the Hockenheimring in Baden-Württemberg, West Germany, on the 30 July 1989. The race would see Ayrton Senna lead home a dominant one-two for McLaren-Honda, after a late gearbox issue for teammate Alain Prost handed him victory.

Automobili Lamborghini presents the Essenza SCV12, the track-only hypercar in a limited edition of 40 units, developed by Lamborghini Squadra Corse and designed by Lamborghini Centro Stile. The direct descendant of cars such as the Miura Jota and Diablo GTR, the Essenza SCV12 is fitted with the most powerful V12 naturally aspirated engine ever developed by Lamborghini, combined with aerodynamics inspired by racing prototypes and new technical solutions designed for the ultimate driving experience.

Born for the track
The Essenza SCV12 was created for exclusive track use, with engineering solutions derived from racing. The V12 engine is able to deliver over 830 hp, with a significant power uplift from the RAM effect at high speeds. The exhaust pipes were designed by Capristo to reduce the back pressure, improving performance and emphasizing the unique sound of the engine. The power is handled by a new X-trac sequential six-speed gearbox as a structural element within the chassis, combined with rear-wheel drive to ensure compactness, structural continuity, and greater torsional stiffness.
The Essenza SCV12 features an exceptional power-to-weight ratio of 1.66 hp/kg thanks to the new-generation carbon fiber monocoque chassis without internal roll cage. The Essenza SCV12 is also the first GT car developed to respect FIA prototype safety rules.
To ensure maximum agility and stability on even the most demanding tracks, kinematic solutions inspired by racing prototypes have been adopted, such as the push-rod rear suspension installed directly on the gearbox. The panorama is completed by specific slick Pirelli tires mounted on magnesium rims (19” front, 20” rear), which frame the brake discs and calipers developed by Brembo Motorsport.
Aerodynamics
The aerodynamics benefit from Lamborghini Squadra Corse’s GT racing experience to ensure a level of efficiency and higher downforce levels than a GT3 car, with a value of 1,200 kg at 250 km/h.
The front hood has a double air intake with a central rib, typical of the Huracán racing cars, which separates the hot airflow coming from the radiator and conveys the cold air to the airscoop located on the roof. The front features a splitter and two lateral elements; on the sides, the flows for engine and gearbox cooling have been optimized through the use of vertical fins situated on the side sills. The aerodynamic package is completed by the large adjustable double-profile rear wing.  
Design
The design of the Essenza SCV12 is the result of the creative work by Lamborghini Centro Stile, which has designed all racing cars produced by Lamborghini since Squadra Corse was established. The essential nature of the car is underscored by the structure of the bodywork, formed by only three elements to enable quick replacement when necessary during pit stops. The exclusive Verde Silvans, Grigio Linx, Nero Aldebaran Gloss and Arancio California launch livery displays the trademark logos of long-standing Lamborghini Squadra Corse partners, Pertamina, Pirelli and Roger Dubuis.
The sleek yet taut and dynamic lines combine the appeal of 1970s prototypes and elements typical of Lamborghini’s DNA, like the hexagonal geometry that characterizes the front headlights, and the roof airscoop and air vents that frame the steering wheel. There is also the unmistakable “Y”, the stylistic feature repeated on the livery and in the cockpit, where each element represents the best compromise between lightweight, functionality and design. In fact, the instrument panel and dashboard are supported by an asymmetrical carbon “Y”, a load-bearing and stylistic element that frames the cockpit, designed to put the driver at the center of an absolute driving experience.
The design of the multi-function steering wheel with display was inspired by F1 single-seater steering wheels to offer the best ergonomics and a perfect feel, without the driver needing remove their hands from the rim with its futuristic yet rational design. The specific FIA homologated OMP seat with carbon shell embraces the driver to ensure comfort, safety and stability.
Driving experience
Essenza SCV12 customers will become part of an exclusive club that will give them access to special programs to drive their hypercar on the most prestigious circuits in the world. The program includes storage service in a new hangar built in Sant’Agata Bolognese for the Essenza SCV12 club. Each car will have a personalized garage and dedicated services, including webcams to allow customers to monitor their cars 24 hours a day using an app. The facility also houses the “Lamborghini Squadra Corse Drivers Lab” by Tecnobody to offer athletic training programs similar to those followed by the official Lamborghini racing drivers.
The track calendar will start in 2021 with “arrive and drive” events held at numerous FIA Grade 1 homologated circuits. Assistance will be provided by the Squadra Corse technical staff with the support of Emanuele Pirro, five-time winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans and an excellent tutor for the customer-drivers; and Marco Mapelli, Lamborghini Squadra Corse Factory Driver.

Any Lamborghini Countach will do for me. LP400, LP500S, or this 25th Anniversary. The factory grabbed this one and a 1973 Jarama GTS and competed in the 2020 Modena Cento Ore recently.
