favourite rwby's allusions?

Hi,

thank you so much for this ask! I love RWBY's allusions and talking about them is always a pleasure! So, I have currently 4 allusions I would call faves. I love many others too, but these 4 are kind of special for me:

Cinder Fall - Cinderella

Cinder's allusion is at the same time obvious and very layered. The key to understand it is Midnight (best written episode of the series imo). There, Cinder's fairy-tale gets inverted. She is a slave who finds her prince (Rhodes), but is ultimately failed and left in the darkness. At the same time, Cinder's background helps us read her allusion in the main storyline. As a matter of fact Cinder's story is about the cycle of abuse. She is stuck in it, so her fairy tale keeps repeating and won't have a happy ending until she interrupts the cycle. As a result we have:

Salem as a combination between the Evil Stepmother (Madame) and the Fairy Godmother (Rhodes)

Ruby as the Prince (a better version of Rhodes)

Emerald and Mercury as Cinder's slippers (the embodyment of the twin swords of her childhood)

Salem is the Evil Stepmom masked as a powerful Fairy Godmother, who gives Cinder a new pair of shiny slippers (the Maiden Powers). Still, they are only a tool to manipulate our Cinderella. Ruby is instead the Huntress who dances with Cinder and will save her with her personal silver slippers (her silver eyes). Finally, Emerald and Mercury are the two sides of Cinder, her two slippers who will lead the Prince (Ruby and RWBY) to her.

Key to understand the allusion- The episode Midnight (+ the Beacon Dance tbh)

Favourite motif- Emerald and Mercury as the slippers

Why it is a fave- It balances its relevance to the plot with strong imagery and metaphors. So, it is easy to notice, but it leaves much to discover once you start analyzing it

Weiss Schnee - Snowhite

Weiss's allusion plays with the idea of "royal test":

White is cold and always yearning, burdened by a royal test.

Which is nothing, but a trial to see if Weiss is fit to become Queen. In fairy-tale symbolism, a princess becomes queen when she grows up and self-actualizes. So, Weiss's story is one where she blooms into herself. Initially, she is given two opposite examples of "queens":

Jacques is the Evil Queen of Snowhite

Winter is the Snow Queen of Andersen's story

Weiss's arc is about realizing she is neither. She is instead her own queen:

She does so through integrating the different characters of her fairy tale within herself. She is Snowhite, as such she is made of all the characters that make her story:

She risks to become an Evil Queen

She is an unsure Huntress

She is the Prince who saves herself

She is Snowhite, who grows into a Queen

All these sides are expressed through her summons:

The Queen Lancer is the Evil Queen who gets dethroned by the Good Queen (Snowhite) in the end

The Boarbatusk is the Hunter who kills a boar to help Snowhite

The Knight is the Prince who saves Snowhite

The Nevermore is the crow turned into dove, which announces Snowhite's final resurrection

So, the summons are different characters of Snowhite. Moreover, each character fits a different Jungian Archetype:

The Queen is the Persona (the mask she wears)

The Hunter is the shadow (what she represses)

The Prince is the animus (the masculine inside the feminine)

Snowhite is the self (the sum of all other archetypes)

In short, Weiss plays all the characters of her story and her semblance is used to metaphorically comment her arc and tie her fairy-tale to the main plot in a symbolic way. It might seem Weiss's story isn't following Snowhite's. Still, if one focuses on Weiss's inner journey it turns out she has already gone through the majority of the Grimms' fairy tale. Only a finale is missing, which I think will crown Weiss's arc with an apple. (I need an apple)

Key to understand the allusion- Weiss's summons are Snowhite's characters

Favourite motif- Snowhite's characters fitting different Jungian Archetypes

Why it is a fave - It is very Jungian and psychological. Weiss's Snowhite loosely follows her journey in Remnant, but really shines when it is applied to Weiss's internal evolution

Yang XiaoLong - Goldilocks and the Three Bears

Yang's allusion is built on the idea of hot, cold and just right, which is declined in three different ways:

Red is hot, blue is cold and purple is just right. These colors comment Yang's arc and semblance. In particular, she is usually the just right (purple eyes), but when she uses her power she becomes too hot (red eyes)

Ruby is red, Weiss is blue and Blake is purple. This makes them Yang's hot, cold and just right. Together, they are the three bears of the fairy - tale, who welcome Yang in their found family

Yang is going through a process to find her just right. Still, before she succeeds she has to go through the too hot and too cold. In particular...

The Vale's arc is Yang's too hot:

Yang: Strawberry Sunrise. No ice. Oh, and one of those little umbrellas.

Yang goes to look for Raven and orders a hot beverage (no ice). She ends her search by finding Ruby (her hot bear). At the end of the arc she explodes in flames and loses an arm.

The Mistral's arc is Yang's too cold:

Yang: A water. It's hot out.

Yang goes to look for Raven and orders a cold beverage. She ends her search by finding Weiss (her cold bear). At the end of the arc she keeps it cool while fighting Adam and wins.

After this process, she has found her just right:

Still, I am sure Vacuo will explore this idea further and lead Yang's to her finale and truest "just right" as a character.

Key to understand the allusion - The Yellow Trailer sets up the metaphor with its different layers

Favourite motif - Red, blue and purple as hot, cold and just right

Why it is a fave - It uses dialogues and lines as motifs much more than other allusions and I find it neat. Especially because Yang is pun-girl and linked to knowledge, so I think this choice fits a lot.

Emerald Sustrai - Aladdin

Emerald's allusion is one that caught me off guard and now I love it! The key idea is that Emerald is both Aladdin and the Geenie. As a matter of fact Cinder tricks Emerald with the promise to fulfill her wish only to turn her into a slave. In general, the key characters and motif in Em's allusion are:

Cinder and Salem as the 2 geenies that promise to fulfill Emerald's wishes

Cinder and Salem as the 2 Evil Wizards that abuse Emerald

The Cave of Wonders as the cycle of abuse

The Lamp (the Relic of Knowledge) and the Ring (Em's own semblance) as magical tools that help our Aladdin out

In general, Emerald's design and basic idea tie with Disney-Aladdin's famous line:

"Only one may enter here, one whose worth lies far within... the Diamond in the Rough" (Aladdin, 1992)

Emerald is a precious gem covered in dirt, but with time she will find her inner value and discover what she truly wants. As a matter of fact her allusion thematically explores the differences between wants vs needs. Emerald starts by following an illusory wish (Cinder), but is slowly realizing her true wish and need (RWBYJNRO and Mercury). Differently from others' allusions, hers is just at the beginning and needs some kind of climatic conclusion. I am looking forward to ti! (Bonus if it ties with Mercury's headcanon allusion I came up with :P)

Key to understand the allusion - Cinder and Salem playing the parts of the geenies while referencing respectively a ring and a lamp

Favourite motif - Emerald is a gem in the rough

Why it is a fave - I love the potential of how the geenies and the wish imagert can be used in Emerald and Mercury's arcs. It can be very very powerful!

These are my 4 faves, but of course there are other allusions I love! It is just I have analyzed them less, so it is as if I am lacking a full picture. They are:

Ruby's LRRH- I love how it is intertwined with the Alice's one in volume 9. Still, I think there is much more to it.

Penny's Pinocchio- It is one of the most powerful allusions tbh and I would like to analyze it properly one day. Its ending being an inversion of the original fairy-tale is perfect. Here it is Penny (Pinocchio), who creates Winter (The Blue Fairy).

Jaune's Jeanne D'Arc - The Jaunidice's arc sets up this allusion brilliantly. The way it ties Pyrrha with Jaune's inspiration and personal God and how it manifests itself each arc with a miracle Jaune witnesses or performs is very powerful.

I also like Blake's Beauty and Beast's allusion, but I did not have to discover it slowly and it came to me as pretty obvious. So, I like it a little less.

I have yet to think about Ren and Nora's allusions, but I am interested in them.

Finally, I am super interested in Mercury's allusion and I am curious about it. I think its set-up is great and I wanna see how it plays out.

Hi can you please add some cards incorporating anal submission or anal punishment.

Well, first, I want to note that I created this as a game, so every card can be declined therefore I don't think it should be used as a way to enforce punishment.

If my partner needs, for a reason or another, to be punished because a rule's been broken, it's a complete different part of our relationship and it got its own, very clear, protocol. Rules are set and need to be followed, and it's not part of a game.

not to be dramatic but sodam yat is probably the single most infuriating waste of a character ive ever seen. the concept of him alone is so good it makes me want to SCREAM like!!! he is kyle! he’s a mirrored version of kyle where absolutely everything is flipped on its head

instead of being the only lantern left after the destruction of the corps and rising to become basically its god, sodam starts off at the highest point, as ion at the height of the rebuilt corps, and he’s destined to see it destroyed until he’s the only lantern left! his story is just kyle’s played in reverse! kyle as a tragedy!

and it started almost a decade before kyle was even created! sodam joined the corps in 2007, but the prophecy stating he would be the last green lantern to be killed before mogo when the corps finally falls for good is from an annual released in 1986! by the time his story started, it had already ended in his death and failure to save the corps over twenty years before!!

he’s one of the best tragic heroes i’ve ever seen in a comic book like EVERYTHING he does just drips with dramatic irony, and it is so good!! everything about him is SO GOOD!!

and if i think too much about the fact that he’s only interacted with kyle like twice, has barely shown up since like 2011, and has now given up being a green lantern to go be a government official on the violently xenophobic, totalitarian planet that he spent his entire life trying to escape, it makes me want to start biting people!!

Link doesn’t know where he is. He’d gotten up, went to visit his sister, went home to get his satchel and sword, then went on a walk through the woods. But it’s been hours, and Link should be out of here by now. He doesn’t get it—he made all the right turns, he’s sure of it! The trees are starting to look different, though… There’s something off. These aren’t Link’s woods anymore, he’s certain. But…where is he, then, if not home? The little prince doesn’t know, but he is determined to find out. This world does not belong to him, of that he is sure, so he must be careful. Link slipped his sword out of its scabbard, holding it tightly in his hand as he continued to walk, hoping to stumble upon an exit. The only sounds were the rustling of leaves and the sound of metal hitting against branches, which unnerved him for a brief moment before he realised that it was just him walking into bushes, his prosthetic leg—carefully made from iron, specially crafted by the blacksmith at the prince’s request—breaking the branches upon impact. But, even with this knowledge, Link feels he isn’t alone. Someone—or something—is with him in these woods. Link needs to get out. Link isn’t wanted here, and he knows it. The woods here are dark—darker than even the lost woods—and Link has resorted to using his lantern to see where he’s going. Is he going deeper in, or is it getting darker as the time passes? He isn’t quite sure. “Hello?”He chanced it, yelling out into the darkness. “Is anyone there?” There was no response. Link wishes there was, because if someone had yelled back, he would know that the feeling of being with someone—something?—else isn’t sinister. But there was no response, so Link remains on edge. He continued to walk in relative silence, eyes darting around the area as he walked. Link sees a split between the trees, exposing what looks like a clearing. ‘Finally!’ Link smiled, soft lilac eyes shining as he picked up the pace, but slowed again once he’d realised. This clearing was confirmation he wasn’t home anymore—the grass is too green, it’s too healthy to be his. It’s unsettling, because this reminds him that he is not at home anymore, and has ended up somewhere new. And that honestly terrifies him, just a little bit. Because he doesn’t know what to expect—he doesn’t know the threats, he doesn’t know the calibre of any enemies he’d run into…he doesn’t know anything about where he is. ‘This is fine,’Link reassured himself, heading towards the clearing, ‘I…will be okay!’ Gods, he has to be okay—what kind of hero is scared about a new place? Link let out a soft breath as he stepped into the clearing, glancing around. …well. He wasn’t expecting to find a group of people looking at him. “Um…hello?”Link started, gripping his sword tighter. “I—I’m sorry if I interrupted something, I’m just…a bit lost.” “You weren’t interrupting anything,”One of them spoke up, standing up and heading over to Link. He noticed that the other is wearing a blue scarf. It looks really nice. “What’s your name, kid?” “Oh, um..my name’s Link.” “...of course.”He frowned, then sighed. “Well, then, this isn’t just a big coincidence then.” Hearing that, Link tilted his head, growing even more confused when the older man seemed to think he would catch on. When he didn’t, the other elaborated. “We’re all named Link. Except Linkle, but that’s close enough.” “Oh that’s…well. That’s funny!”Link let out a giggle. “Though, you guys don’t look familiar—and I know everyone!” “Yeah…I would remember a kid with bright pink dreads.”One of the others spoke up, and Link frowned in confusion upon seeing that the others' sclera were black as opposed to white. I’ll put a pin in that for now. “Your teeth remind me of a bunny.”Another spoke up, startling Link for a brief moment. “Can we call you that? Bunny?” “Oh. Okay!” “Great, great.”He yawned. “They call me Hypnos.” “Hypnos?” “Yeah, cool name right?”Hypnos shot him a lopsided grin, leaning on a tree with eyes shut. “Rundown—weird face marks over there is Prism, guy with scarf is Knight, kid with white hair is Ocarina, the three idiots with bright hair are Emerald, Ruby and Sapphire respectively, uh, then there’s Linkle, and the lil fella with the tattoos is Tide. Cool? Cool.” Bunny nodded, looking at all of them before frowning. “A concerning amount of us are children.” “A concerning amount of us are children.”Ruby nodded, rubbing her eyes. “I think Knight and Linkle are the only actual adults.” “Oh.” “I wouldn't trust them to act like adults, though,”Prism spoke up, a soft huff leaving his mouth. “One’s stupid and the other’s clumsy.” “That’s not nice, Prism.” “Saph, you are the only one who cares.” Bunny let out a sigh, watching the argument before his eyes shifted over to Ocarina. ‘They do this a lot, you get used to it,’Ocarina signed once they were sure he was looking, and Bunny nodded along. “Is there any reason they do it?” Ocarina shrugged loosely. ‘Not that I can recall. I think Sapphire is too nice and Prism is just too honest. Prism hates withholding the truth. Not sure why—his honesty can be brutal. It would be a nice change if he would lie about a few things, but I suppose nothing can make Prism lie.’ “Oh.”Bunny frowned gently. “Prism…is he nice otherwise?” ‘Depends on the day. Sometimes he can be nice. Other days…’Ocarina’s hands fumbled, and he frowned. ‘Other days, Prism is cruel. We know he isn’t being cruel on purpose, but—he is. He is cruel sometimes. I would try and get on his good side, if I were you.’ “...what about the others?” ‘Hypnos is asleep most of the time. I…I can’t figure out why, but he…feels weird. Creepy, even. Not because of the weirdly-placed wings on his head, but something is off about him. Generally, though, when he isn’t asleep, he’s nice. Always tries to make everyone feel better. Only known the guy a month, but without fail he tells a joke when someone’s upset and it makes them feel better. But he is still creepy. I wouldn’t trust him too much, but it’s your call.’ Ocarina paused, allowing Bunny a moment to breathe before continuing, ‘Tide is 14. That’s important, because he acts older. He doesn’t really like jokes, but he’s still got a bit of childlike joy left. I don’t know what he’s been through, but it musta been bad yanno? I think he might like you—you look young. Anyways. Got a sister he adores and a best friend he would die for. He doesn’t talk to Prism, much, nor does he talk to Linkle or Knight. He prefers to talk to Emerald a lot. I think they’re close. He doesn’t like Hypnos much, though he has told me it isn’t because of how creepy he feels, but because he’s always cracking jokes, yeah?’ “He’s older than me.”Bunny hummed out, and Ocarina cracked a smile before taking a breath. ‘Sapphire, Emerald and Ruby don’t go anywhere without each other. They’re not related—they’re very adamant about that—but they went on an adventure together. Adventures do tend to bring people together, I suppose. Sapphire and Ruby are freakishly in-sync with each other. Two sides of the same coin, I’d say. Sapphire is usually nice, but he’s quick to anger. Ruby is the opposite—she’s always angry but can turn into a real softie within minutes. I apologise—the things I have said are what I’ve gathered from observing, so I don’t know anything much about Emerald, Linkle or Knight.’ “That’s okay.”Bunny shot them a grin. “It helps me a lot. Thank you.” A nod, before Bunny turned to the others. “Okay, um, question?” “Answer.”Hypnos grinned, ignoring Tide’s eye roll. “What’s up?” “How long have you guys been together?” “Bout a month.”Knight whistled. “Maybe two.” “Long enough that we didn’t expect someone new!”Linkle smiled. “Just forgot, you are the hero and not just some kid named Link, right?” “I’m definitely the hero,”Bunny laughed softly. “I doubt any sane person would arm a random child with a sword.” “No sane person would arm any child with a sword,”Prism pointed out, and Bunny shrugged with a mutter of ‘true’. “What exactly are we all doing here, then?” “...beats me.”Emerald huffed out, grinning. “We know we’re supposed to be doing…something, we just don’t know what. It’s…finding out is a work in progress! For now we’re just fighting monsters and figuring out the rest on our own, yanno?” “So…aimless adventuring?” “Aimless adventuring.” “I see. Now, I’m no expert,”Bunny whistled. “But maybe we shouldn’t be standing out in the middle of a forest?” “...kid has a point.”Knight hummed. “I think I saw smoke coming from over there.”Tide whistled, pointing north. “Maybe we should check it out. Might be a town.” “Well? Let’s go, then.”Linkle laughed, spinning around on her heel. A moment to recover, and then Bunny hopped to keep up with the others, a soft smile on his face. He just met them, but they feel safe. He hasn’t felt safe in a while—it’s a nice feeling. …it was a feeling that Bunny missed. He missed it dearly; after all, he only had his sister and Impa that made him feel safe. It’s been a while since Bunny has fully trust another—and he missed being able to. Bunny let out a contented hum, hopping down the beaten path with his new group.

took a look in the notes of that last post out of curiosity and saw a few people mentioning sonic unleashed and as the resident sonic unleashed fan i dont understand how you could get sonic unleashed from any of those emoji combinations ?

#sorry if this comes off as mean lmao i just dont see it. i dont get how you could make that guess from whats there #ok well the first one with the planet and the diamond i guess i can kind of see it. but it comes off as more sonic cd to me #the clock and chains make me think sonic cd #i feel like if it was unleashed they would have put a wolf or a moon or ice cream or a map #or something else with a very obvious connection to unleashed that isnt as strongly associated with any other game #because a gem could be literally anything. there are so many sonic games where the chaos emeralds or some other rock are relevant #well the moon can be associated with a few other games but you understnad what i mean hopefully

do you have a favourite RWBY arc?

Do you mean story-arc or character arc? I am just gonna go with character arcs because I feel like it :) Here is my list. It combines my personal taste with those I think are best written.

1- Penny Polendina

Penny's arc is the best complete one in the series so far. It is thightly written and very powerful. Her final choice does what every character arc's climax should do: it ties togetyher all the thematic threads explored by Penny's arc in one incredibly meaningful moment. In the end, Penny chooses to be a friend, shows she is an adult and affirms her own humanity. Her choice is meant to be tragic and bittersweet because humanity can be both. Still, it is definately worth it.

1 - Cinder Fall

Cinder's arc isn't complete, but there is already enough for her to get first place together with Penny. Midnight is the best written episode of the series in my opinion and it manages to tie together all the pieces of foreshadowing and subtext present in Cinder's story up until that point. It is also a pivotal point in Cinder's story, where she has to make a choice. Will she recognize she is still a prisoner of abuse or will she ignore this truth? She chooses to repress and fails to develop positively. As a result, she has prepared her own tragedy.

Cinder's story is key to the whole series and it has the potential to end up above all the other arcs, if well executed.

3 - Weiss Schnee and Yang Xiaolong

Ice Girl and Fire Girl are tied for third place! (together with Jaune)

Weiss's arc has a very strong set-up and beginning. She gets a lot of focus at Beacon and quickly develops. After such a solid start her development can take the time to happen slowly, so that we can see how she has silently and beautifully evolved throughout the volumes. She is now warmer, kinder and happier than ever. Points for her having some of my favourite motifs.

Yang's arc is kind of the opposite, in my opinion. She gets the least focus among the 4 main girls in Vale. Still, the moment her arc decides to roll, it gets central stage. Her focus in Mistral is wonderful and her development is beautifully conveyed in volume 5 and volume 6 climaxes. Her confrontation with Raven is especially one of the best scenes of the series.

3 - Jaune D'Arc

Jaune's arc is one of the best executed both in terms of pacing and evolution of the character. If he keeps going this way, he might climb to first place tbh.

6 - Ruby Rose

I am expecting her to climb higher. Her focus in volume 9 was great and a beautiful first step in her development. The choice to mask her LRRH's story behind Alice in Wonderland references was wonderful and brilliantly executed. I think the ending could have been conveyed more powerfully, but the final result is still great. I am looking forward to how her arc will continue!

7 - Blake Belladonna and Oscar Pine

Blake's arc is beautiful and it ties together many thematic threads. Maybe a little bit too much, which is why it is below the other main characters. She is still wonderful though! And the more one analyzes her story, the more gems are found!

Oscar is one of the best written characters in my opinion, as his story is thight and perfectly intertwined with the main plot. Still, I think it has still to enter its climax, hence why he is only 7th place. Totally expecting him to climb higher, though.

9 - Emerald Sustrai

Emerald's arc has still to climax, but I like her set-up a lot and she is slowly going through a beautiful inner growth. There is already enough meet and actual development for her to just make the top 10 :P

9 - Pyrrha Nikos and James Ironwood

Both have masterfully written arcs and in terms of writing they could be higher. Still, I am less involved in their stories compared to others. In any case, they are two perfectly executed examples of tragedies. And different kinds of tragedies, as well.

Pyrrha's tragedy lies in the world around her. Ironwood's tragedy lies within himself.

11 - Lie Ren and Qrow Branwen

Both Ren and Qrow have beautiful arcs, but I am less involved with them when compared to others. So, here they are.

I would highlight this list doesn't consider characters like Salem, Nora, Raven, Summer or Mercury because even if set-up, their arcs still need to properly happen on-screen. Among them, though, I would say that Raven and Mercury especially have wonderful set-ups.

Raven's characterization and focus in volume 5 makes her one of the best written characters tbh. She is despicable, flawed, a coward and a hypocrite. And this is precisely why she is so great. She is very human and layered. It is clear she cares about Yang. Still, it is also clear she is too selfish and scared to act on her feelings. The way the narrative peels away her powerful mask to reveal a weak soul behind it is great. As it is the challenge for her to overcome her fear and make amends.

Mercury has so far one of the best set-up arc. His writing has been extremely thight and almost every scene he is in gives additioinal information on him, his background, his bonds with others and his feelings. All in a very subtle way. Basically, his writing is very rich and we can infer a lot, despite his arc having yet to start. He is the embodyment of the cycle of abuse and I am curious to see how this concept gets explored.

Finally, shout outs to Neo and Ilia. Their arcs aren't as complex or long and have less bits than the main characters'. Still, they are thight and perfectly executed.
