The emergency department is insane. And I respect the specific work that the ED staff do to quickly triage and treat whatever patients come through our door. It’s a very specific philosophy, one that can be summed up mostly as “but did you die?” Anyway good god, one time I was helping out down in the emergency department, and a patient said they were cold. So I was “oh hey I’ll grab you a warm blanket,” which astonished the ED nurse training me. She was like “wow so you’re really compassionate” and I was like “hey. you simply MUST get higher standards for what is extraordinary attention to patient comfort. Warm blanket is like below bare minimum. We don’t even have to do any work to make them warm.”
Then the ED nurse placed an IV with one hand and an NG tube with another and took off her shoes so she could push alteplase with her feet, while five ambulances rolled in at the same time and the patient in room one tried really hard to suddenly die, and I was like “okay my original point is still correct and I stand by it. but I do see the context you’re working with.”

I think i'd be a pretty funny hc if sailor waddle dee left serving under dedede not because she hates him but because she just love the idea of being rebellious. She joined the halberd crew because their motivation lines up with hers. She's the only one who's secretly pissy over meta and dedede working together because that means she's just a normal government worker now and not a cool rebel overthrowing the government

A mother's word for word transcription of the imaginary phone call her four-year-old made to Santa Claus in 1911.
(source: The Harbor Beach Times, December 22, 1911.)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Through some outrageous case of serendipity I found a recording of another phone call this same child made 60 years later. Though I have to say his choice of conversational partner is a definite downgrade from the first call.

Last week I had to go to the ER due to an unfortunate run in with a bat and worries about potential exposure to rabies. This trip to the ER was a fascinating anthropological study of human behavior while under stress. Maybe the most noteworthy thing I noticed was a man sat near me in the waiting room who brought with him a book called Classical Christianity. He read the book briefly before casting it aside to watch videos on his phone. After an hour or so of waiting (it was a very busy night in the ER we all had to wait a long time) he jumped up, book in tow, and went up to the front desk where he proceeded to yell and flip off the front desk worker before storming out of the ER in a huff. Just saying, that didn’t seem like very classical Christian behavior my dude. But hey, I’m just a godless heathen who would never dare to treat overworked and underpaid healthcare workers like that.

Personal but: tomorrow I gotta call my neurologist's office and ask them to transfer my medical record to my doctor, so that he can sign off on my disability pension, and I can't wait to hear what excuse I'm going to get for why they cannot perform this basic fucking task. It's gonna be like "actually because we write our medical records on circle-shaped paper we're unable to scan it into normal square-shaped paper format, so that's why we can't transfer your medical record, guess you'll just have to choose between death by seizure or death by starvation uwu". And I know anyone reading this will be thinking I'm just being silly and dramatic and to that I say: tune in tomorrow and find out lmao

Have some more LU Boys in Healthcare snippets that I didn't know what to do with
"Did you not hear me? I said I can't breath!" the patient yelled, leaning forward in her bed.
Legend's eyes scanned over her once more before looking up at the monitor, which clearly showed her oxygen saturation within normal parameters. Sure, she probably felt short of breath, he wasn't going to deny what she was feeling, but there was nothing he could do at the moment because her body was physiologically stable.
"Ma'am," Legend tried again, feeling his ire rise as she gulped in breaths as if she were drowning. "I understand what you said, and I understand you feel like you can't breathe. I'm not denying that. But your color is perfect, your oxygen saturation implies that your blood is getting all the oxygen it needs, and--"
"I need some oxygen!"
Legend cleared his throat, scowling behind his mask. "Oxygen is not going to help you in this situation. There are a lot of reasons you could be feeling like this. I need you to focus on your breathing--"
"Get me a damn doctor if you're not going to do anything!"
"Sure thing," Legend deadpanned, exiting the room and closing the door behind him. He saw Sky, who was hovering outside the room as if he were ready to hop in and rescue him.
"I freaking hate people," Legend grumbled.
Sky smiled weakly. "Well, some can be difficult, yes."
"No. No. I hate people."
"Excuse me?"
Sky and Legend turned and saw a person in street clothes with a visitor wristband. She looked anxious and very lost. "I'm--I'm sorry, but I'm trying to find my husband, he was just brought in by ambulance and they let me back but I can't find the room they said he was in."
Legend's face immediately softened. "Of course, ma'am, I'll show you. What room are you trying to reach?"
Letting a guiding hand hover behind the visitor's back, Legend talked gently to her as they made their way to the room. When he got back to the nurse's station he saw Warriors and Sky smirking at him.
"Shut up," he said, rolling his eyes.
"Oh, right of course, Mr. I Hate People," Warriors laughed. "By the way, your difficulty breathing patient is hitting her call bell."
Legend groaned.

Twilight hummed as he scrubbed a bladder scanner clean with some bleach wipes. "You know, I was debating becoming a nurse. I just don't know if I want to deal with all that schooling."
Ilia leaned against the counter, watching the monitor on the wall since one of her patient had been de-saturating a good amount throughout the shift. "You're our best tech, Twi, so I'd be lying if I said it wouldn't hurt the unit. But I think you'd make a great pediatric nurse."
"But the schooling, Ilia. It sounds horrible."
"Oh, it absolutely is. But it's worth it."
Ilia gave him a reassuring smile before hopping off her little post as she saw the monitor beep in yellow, indicating her patient probably needed suctioning again. Twilight stared at the wipes thoughtfully. Maybe... but then he remembered his EMT and CNA classes and all the hours of sitting around and lectures and reading and exams. Ugh.
"Twilight!"
Turning, Twilight saw his favorite five-year-old transplant patient walking towards him with open arms. He gave the child a huge smile and reached out. "Hey, buddy! Back from your scans already?"
"You said we'd do story time," the child said with a giggle as they hugged.
"I did, didn't I? Tell you what, you head back to your room with your nurse and I'll be there in a minute, okay? I've got to finish cleaning first."
The child nodded excitedly and followed his nurse as everyone in the unit waved at him. Twilight beamed, sighing happily.
Well, he supposed he could keep deliberating about nursing school, but he knew he was doing plenty of good where he was in the meantime.

Hyrule stared curiously at the pickup truck haphazardly parked halfway into a driveway and halfway on someone's yard. There was no damage to the vehicle from what he could see, so at least that was something. He looked over at the police officer who approached.
"So what's going on?" he asked the officer.
"I was trying to pull him over for driving erratically. Apparently he's been drinking so he tried to outrun me and parked his car beautifully in that driveway as you can see," the officer explained, giving a wave to the truck like she was on a game show. "After he got out he tried to run and jump the fence over there and instead he fell onto the ground. I just want him checked out to make sure he's okay before he goes to jail."
Hyrule nodded. "Got it."
"Just be mindful, he hasn't been cooperative for us at all," the officer advised.
Hyrule hummed in acknowledgement, already going through different questions and issues that could be wrong with the patient. Strolling to the police vehicle, he opened the door. The patient was a young man, and the smell of alcohol slammed into Hyrule's nostrils, making him clear his throat a bit in an attempt to cover a cough. The man's skin wasn't torn up at all, and Hyrule saw no immediate sign of injury, so at least that was something.
"Hey, buddy," Hyrule greeted. "What happened?"
"I fell," the patient muttered.
"Did you hit your head?"
"No."
"You take blood thinners?"
"No."
"Anything hurting?"
"My ankle and my knee."
After figuring out which ankle and knee, Hyrule looked them over. The man's knee was a little red, almost resembling rug burn. His ankle looked perfectly fine and there was no difference between the one that was bothering him and the one that wasn't. Hyrule indicated as such out loud to keep the patient informed and then assessed his vital signs.
As he got the man's blood pressure and reported his findings, the patient said, "Okay. Thank you, sorry to bother you."
Hyrule pat him on the shoulder. "That's what we're here for."
As soon as the paramedic dipped back and the officer appeared, the patient's demeanor completely changed.
"To hell with you, I didn't do anything wrong! I'm not telling you jack shit!" the man practically spat in the officer's direction as she closed the door.
Hyrule stared at the patient through the door, feeling annoyance fill him at his rude behavior, and then he sighed, looking at the officer. "I don't see any reason for him to go to the hospital."
The officer smiled and gave a thumb's up. "Perfect."
Just as Hyrule turned to head back to the ambulance, his radio beeped and another call came through. He paused, thinking about where the other crew was, and then realized he and his partner were up next and they'd have to take it.
Sighing heavily, he walked over to his partner, who was waiting by the ambulance. "Well, guess we have to deal with somebody else."
"It's another law assist," his partner replied.
Hyrule blinked. "Another? Good grief, has the whole city lost its mind tonight?"
His partner shrugged and marked up on the radio to say they were responding. The secondary information indicated a motor vehicle crash with entrapment. The two looked at each other, eyebrows raising as the dispatcher spoke more.
Picking up his pace, Hyrule headed for the ambulance. "Well, time for another adventure!"
Climbing into the passenger seat, Hyrule pulled out his computer to look at his call report. He knew he'd have to finish all this paperwork later as he headed to the next incident, so he just jotted down some quick notes to ensure he'd recall this particular patient later:
Drunk as a skunk, Humpty Dumpty took a fall and scraped his knee after he tried to parkour over a fence and failed miserably.

Common Dreams
April 15, 2024
Climate action groups are vehemently rejecting the Biden administration's claim that the approval of a new offshore oil terminal—planned to be the largest in the U.S.—is in the "national interest," after the U.S. Department of Transportation announced the project had met several federal requirements and could begin operations by 2027.
The agency's Maritime Administration said last week that Enterprise Product Partners, a Houston-based pipeline company, had been granted a deepwater port license to build the Sea Port Oil Terminal (SPOT) near Freeport, Texas following a five-year federal review process.
The federal government determined the $1.8 billion terminal project had undergone sufficient environmental impact reviews and would overall benefit the country—even as it was projected by the Sierra Club, which has fought SPOT for several years, to emit greenhouse gases equivalent to those of nearly 90 coal-fired power plants.
"The evidence is clear that SPOT would be catastrophic to the climate, wildlife, and frontline communities of the Gulf," said Devorah Ancel, senior attorney with the Sierra Club. "It threatens the future existence of the endangered Rice's whale with a population of less than fifty, and its ozone pollution would compromise the health of thousands of Gulf residents who have endured decades of fossil fuel industry pollution. Make no mistake, SPOT is not in the national interest."
The project is expected to include two pipelines that would carry crude oil to the deepwater port each day, enabling the export of 2 million barrels of crude oil, loaded onto two supertankers at once, daily.
"Nothing about this project is in alignment with Biden's climate and environmental justice goals," said Kelsey Crane, senior policy advocate at Earthworks. "The communities that will be impacted by SPOT have once again been ignored and will be forced to live with the threat of more oil spills, explosions, and pollution. The best way to protect the public and the climate from the harms of oil is to keep it in the ground."
Allie Rosenbluth, U.S. manager at Oil Change International, noted that the project has been approved despite the International Energy Agency's clear assessment in 2021 that "all new investments in oil and gas projects must stop if the world is going to reach its climate goals," including limiting planetary heating to 1.5°C.
"The Biden administration's decision to approve the Sea Port Oil Terminal is a grave mistake. This approval will only harm local communities and ecosystems, and lead to even more devastating impacts of the climate crisis," said Rosenbluth. "The U.S. is already the largest producer of oil and gas and has the largest expansion plans globally. Instead of continuing this legacy of harm by approving fossil fuel projects, President Biden should be listening to the science and the masses of his constituents calling for an end to fossil fuels."
The direct action group Climate Defiance expressed doubt that the approval of SPOT will help Biden win over any voters as the 2024 election approaches.
Nine in 10 Democratic voters and Democratic-leaning independents told Pew Research Center last year that they believe the U.S. should prioritize developing renewable energy sources—and two-thirds of Republican voters under age 30 agreed.
Tumblr media
"This project would be the single-largest oil export terminal in the U.S." said the group. "We are being boiled alive here, literally burned to death by 'moderate' politicians who see fit to torch us in the name of quarterly profits. How can we live like this? How can this go on?"
Last year was the hottest on record, and the first three months of 2024 have each broken records for high global temperatures. Scientists found last year that climate disasters including wildfires in Canada and extreme heat in Europe were made far more likely by fossil-fueled planetary heating.
Local organizers in Texas condemned the Biden administration's decision to ignore campaigners who have warned of the danger SPOT poses to marine habitats as well as people who live in the area where two crude oil pipelines have now been given final approval to run.
"We continue to struggle to see why Biden and [Transportation Secretary Pete] Buttigieg prefer to protect the corporate profits of billion-dollar oil giants like Enbridge and Enterprise over the hardcore objections of the people who would have to live with the consequences of pipelines criss-crossing our beaches," said Trevor Carroll, Brazoria County lead organizer with Texas Campaign for the Environment. "If you care about environmental justice and the climate, you just can't support a monstrosity like SPOT. The local community and the global climate justice movement are continuing to fight... This is not over."
Melanie Oldham, director of Better Brazoria, said SPOT will be "an oil spill waiting to happen that would not only lower property value, but harm our local ecosystems, ecotourism, beaches, recreation, and kill marine life like the endangered Rice's whale and Kemp's Ridley sea turtles."
"Those of us residents, beachgoers, and voters that have for the past four years opposed the SPOT offshore terminal and pipelines are very disappointed with the approval of the project license," said Oldham. "President Biden has again broken promises to protect frontline communities in Surfside and Freeport."
The administration's approval came three months after the White House announced it was delaying consideration of new gas export terminals, and the same day the federal government said fossil fuel companies will have to pay higher royalties in order to drill on federal lands.
But those climate actions paired with the SPOT approval amount only to "flip flopping," said Climate Defiance.
"It is not enough that the administration stopped new gas exports if they are going to back stab us with this death-sentence decision now," said the group. "This is not us being 'ungrateful.' This is the science. The pure, unvarnished, science."
