Overindulged
prompt: feeder boyfriend quits his job and balloons as fat as his feedee/feeder girlfriend
He drove his sleek BMW up his driveway and into the middle garage just as dusk settled into night. He’d stayed overtime at work again, and to make it up to his girlfriend, three dozen fresh assorted donuts sat in the passenger seat.
Sure enough, immediately upon opening the back door with his stack of boxes, he heard her voice: “Late.”
“It’s the end of the month,” he said. “What do you expect? Brought you something though, so don’t be mad. Come in here.”
He set the boxes down on the granite island, then waited, sucking in a breath. His pupils dilated as his favorite person in the world waddled through the wide archway leading into the kitchen. After giving him a pout, she pulled the boxes toward her with arms that hung, at their heaviest, over half a foot with fat.
She was a beautiful, enormous woman. He had met her on a plane three years ago on a business trip to Paris. She’d pulled him into conversation like a warm whirlpool, and he’d listened in awe to her life story: miserable wife of a banker to a happily divorced entrepreneur, flying first class on her own dime.
With a smug, knowing smile, she talked about how she used to be skinny for her ex’s sake and now was free. He couldn’t help but let his gaze roam over her blatantly overweight body. Thighs pressing firm on either armrest of the wide seat, bust prominent and heavy, belly button deep and visible through her dress.
Bad news is, she’d concluded, I just settled a messy lawsuit that lost me my career and nearly bankrupted me. But she shrugged, as if such was life. I’m taking my last-hurrah vacation until I have no choice but to eat tiny, unsatisfying meals again.
He decided that couldn’t come to pass, so he spent as much time with her outside his business obligations as he could, taking her to meal after meal, falling in love as she ate to her heart’s content and shamelessly talked about how she’d rather fallen in love with gaining weight. It titillated and empowered her. By the end of their two week stay in Paris, she was twelve pounds bigger and he had invited her to live with him for a while as she looked for a new career path. She accepted.
Three years later, she’d found her calling without having to leave his luxurious, spacious home. Doing what she loved.
She was almost four hundred and fifty pounds now, last he was updated. She always wore leggings that clung to every lump and bulge of cellulite, and she liked to tease him by wearing crop tops, letting her massive belly and side rolls hang out and wobble as they pleased.
He watched with soft eyes as she stuffed herself with four jelly-filled doughnuts. Between bites she said, “These long hours at your soulless job are no good. My fans want to see more of you.” More eating. “The last time you fed me on camera was weeks ago!”
She gave him an imploring look as she ate a fifth doughnut. Boston creme. Her face, once conventionally pretty, now had a sexy overindulged look. She’d lost her jawline to additional chins and neck fat, and her round, fatty cheeks quivered as she chewed. Even before she finished the fifth doughnut, she picked up a sixth. “And don’t think they haven’t noticed that little tummy you have now.”
“What?” He looked down at himself, blushing at how his tie sat out a bit on slightly stretched white buttons.
Before he could say anything, she pushed a chocolate doughnut in his hand. “I know people willing to pay a pretty petty to see you chunk out.” She smirked. “Pop a couple of those buttons.”
He laughed dismissively, but as he ate the doughnut, he contemplated the press of his new chub against his shirt. His pants felt a little tight in the ass, too, now that he thought about it. What if? he thought.
Suddenly, he found himself admitting: “I’ve been thinking of quitting.”
Her eyebrows rose.
“I want to spend more time with you,” he explained. He hadn’t meant to talk about it now, but here he was. Out of nervousness, he pulled one of the boxes toward himself and picked another doughnut, this one caving in under its sprinkles. He took a heavenly bite. “I have plenty of money saved and invested to take care of both of us for a long time. I just don’t see why I…”
She waddled over to his side of the island and took his free hand. “You know I’d support you.” Then she pulled him closer, into a smiling kiss. “I’ll support you real good.”
*
Before his two week notice even ended, he was eight pounds heavier, and he relished how his coworkers’ eyes lingered on his burgeoning waistline. Soon, his tummy was pushing over his pants. His chest felt thicker. He felt his ass spread wider when he sat down. He ate desserts all the time, and his girlfriend lavished him with attention (food) at every opportunity when he was home, encouraging him to eat in amounts he’d never let himself eat before. She started filming - with his consent, as always - the development of his chubbing up. Her fans loved him even more than they already did, compliments coming in faster than he could read them.
One month into being an unemployed man, she stuffed him on camera until one of his shirt buttons popped off. The experience was more of a revelation for him than even becoming officially overweight; that night, after she went to sleep, he got out of bed, squeezed into an old pair of slacks that barely fit him, then gorged himself in the kitchen until he gasped at the relief of his ass seam tearing open, unable to accommodate his butt, which everyone online said was growing gorgeously fat. His heart fluttered just thinking about it, and he hoped his ass kept growing.
It did.
“I admit, I never thought you’d be this much of a pear,” his girlfriend told him, six months into his steady ballooning. They were admiring his progress in the large bathroom mirror. He may have looked small relative to his partner’s morbid obesity, but somehow, they were both more fascinated with his growth at the moment. She outlined his bottom heavy figure with her hands. Fat had indeed stored most eagerly in his ass, thighs, and hips. His belly drooped soft and wide.
“I love it,” she said. “Love everything about you.” But then something else came into her expression. “Except how you’ve stopped picking up after yourself.”
He swallowed, and said honestly, “Sorry. I know I’m getting lazier.”
“We’ll have to hire a maid.” She grinned wickedly. “Or do two pigs deserve to roll in their sty?”
*
A year into living on his passive income and her subscribers, the couple had not yet hired any cleaning services, and his country club house was...well. Not trashed, but messy and disorganized. She blamed the five pounds she’d lost over the past month on having to constantly throw his trash away. She punished him by making him stand while drinking a whole liter of full-sugar soda. Since he’d developed a strong distaste for any physical effort as he sunk deeper into obesity, he grumbled the whole time. When he finally fell back on the couch, she sat too. Together, they took up most of it. But while she looked perfectly composed, he was panting raggedly, slightly sweaty, a food stain on his pants.
“Look.” She reached out and held his chubby wrist. “I can tell that the fatter you get, the more your natural inclination is to be a pig.” She spoke with total matter-of-factness. As if the emergence of his inner pig was unsurprising and inevitable. “It’s not uncommon in men - that urge to oink and eat as a way of life. But we share this space. I help pay off this house. Please throw away your take out containers.”
Then she added, at his long-suffering sigh, “I’ll reward you.”
He met her gaze. “Tonight?”
“Tonight.”
*
This time, there were no cameras. There was just her, sitting on one side of their king bed and him on the other, breathing heavy, taking her reward one bite at a time.
Everywhere in their bed were containers and packages and napkins and soda bottles. He had eaten mexican and noodles and burgers and fries. He’d eaten candy bars and sundaes and milkshakes and chunky cookies. He was so full he could feel the skin of his belly stretching. He could practically feel the skin of his thighs stretching, as if they were filling up heavier with fat right then, as he was determinedly overfed. He swallowed another bite of greasy cheeseburger.
“Keep going. I can tell you're slowing down, but I’ll have none of that yet. I want to see progress from you.”
“I don’t know…”
“Do you want to feel the ecstasy of squeezing through a doorframe or are you going to plateau at being just fat?”
He let out a breathy moan as he ate another bite of the cheeseburger. His girlfriend knew him too well. She knew he liked the new challenges being big was causing him. She knew it turned him on that he sat so much fatter in his own car, belly pressing against everything, ass barely fitting at all. She knew his hands had begun cupping his hips as a half-unconscious habit, admiring his own width.
He liked how his thighs had to push past each other, jiggling every time. He even liked when he accidentally bumped into things, because it was a hot reminder that he wasn’t the same. He was like her now. He was fat. He was a pig. He wanted to eat and get so big he could barely even waddle. He wanted to squeeze through doorways. He wanted to get stuck.
“I want everything,” he said. And she smiled, temporarily pleased.

“...Historians concur that live-in domestic service was primarily an urban phenomenon in the late nineteenth century. One estimate suggests that between 15 and 30 percent of northeastern city-dwellers hired live-in domestics. The historian David Katzman, who has generated the most refined statistics, demonstrates that even within relative geographical proximity, city-dwellers hired servants more often than did rural dwellers, and city-dwellers with large pools of foreign labor more than city-dwellers without. Nationwide at midcentury there was one domestic servant for every ten families, with a considerably higher ratio in large cities like Boston and New York.
A greater proportion of Bostonians hired domestic servants than did residents of any other northern city, with 219 servants per thousand families. With traditions of household service born in slavery, even after the Civil War, the South led the nation in its reliance on domestic servants, with Atlanta in 1880 boasting 331 servants per thousand families. Even in the South, though, the difference between city and country was notable, with Atlanta in 1900 hiring four times as many servants per thousand families as in the rest of Georgia. Together these figures suggest the flourishing of an era in the history of Victorianism. It was common for American bourgeois city-dwellers on the Atlantic seaboard, even ones of modest means, to rely on the labor of maids to sustain their households.
Of course, the end of the story is popular cliché. With the opening of more lucrative and less degrading jobs for young women as sales clerks, ‘‘typewriters,’’ and teachers, the ‘‘servant problem’’ became terminal, and by the First World War, American housewives could not depend on the hiring of live-in domestic help to assist them in their housework. It is significant, though, that even when ‘‘necessity’’ suggested the reintegration of daughters into the domestic economy, they were gone for good. The culture had put girls to other uses, from which they would not return to their mothers’ sides.
We still might ask why girls were often excused from domestic labor— especially given the compounding weight of the advice literature recommending otherwise. The answer lies in the increasing role played by daughters and servants in the bourgeois quest for refinement. Even when the gross number of live-in servants declined as production moved out of the home, the hiring of at least one domestic remained a prerequisite for middle-class status. The statistics on who hired servants bear out the middle-classness of this phenomenon, with 65 percent of servants in the Northeast in 1860 working in households with no other servants. In an increasingly mobile and prosperous society, hiring servants was one way to demonstrate standing, a concrete and conspicuous way of demonstrating what you had left behind.
One historian argues that the cultural importance of servants should be measured in the amount that some less prosperous families were willing to spend to hire them—sometimes as much as one-third of family income. Clearly, the freeing of daughters from steady household work and the hiring of domestic servants of lesser, often foreign, status went in tandem with the changing purpose of the home itself. Eighteenth-century households had required helpers to assist in domestic production. The homes of the mid– nineteenth century elite instead featured housework ‘‘as the creation and maintenance of comfort and appearance,’’ in the words of the historian Christine Stansell.
As the Beecher sisters observed, families were increasing ‘‘in refinement’’ such that they no longer wished to live in close intimacy with ‘‘uncultured neighbors,’’ far less daughters of foreign shores, who were working as servants. Thus one mill-owning family in rural Vermont made a point of hiring Irish help rather than the daughters of neighboring farmers, who might object to eating in the kitchen and expect to be ‘‘one of the family.’’ Architects reflected such changes by midcentury, such that servants’ quarters were designed as discrete parts of the house, with back stairs and separate entrances. Custom increasingly favored uniforms and servant dining tables in the kitchen.
At the same time that middle classes aspired to higher standards of comfort and appearance in accordance with new possibilities, women’s primary responsibility shifted from the supervision of a household manufactory to family nurturance, the raising and socializing of children. Much has been written about the evolution of new ideals for motherhood following the American Revolution, as women gained responsibility for raising virtuous citizens. ‘‘Republican mothers’’ shaped new daughters as well as new sons. Initially considered necessary allies in the steady work of processing the stuff of survival, the daughters of middle-class families became themselves the prime products the home produced—the embodiment of the principles of sensibility and refinement.
Mothers’ new responsibilities did not erase old ones. The historian Jeanne Boydston has appropriately criticized the readiness of her colleagues to mistake the ideology of domesticity for reality, arguing that by no means did the productive work of the home cease with the industrial revolution. Instead, Boydston argues, the emphasis on the emotional task of mothering tended to eclipse from view, but not eliminate, the continued real labor—the making of clothing, the putting up of preserves, the carrying of fuel—still carried on in the middle-class home. She is right in her argument that ‘‘paid domestic workers did not free the mistress of the household from labor.’’
But even Boydston acknowledges that domestic servants instead did the work that would have been done by other females in the household—including adult female relatives and daughters. An interesting case in point is the urban family of woman’s rights advocates Henry Blackwell, Lucy Stone, and their daughter Alice Stone Blackwell. As Boydston tells us, Lucy Stone, who was raised on a farm, still kept chickens, worked a garden, and tended a horse and cow, even as she lived a prosperous middle-class existence outside of Boston. Alice Blackwell later remembered that ‘‘she dried all the herbs and put up all the fruits in their season. She made her own yeast, her own bread, her own dried beef, even her own soap.’’
In her lively diary, however, Alice Blackwell reports doing little household work. Such chores as emerge in her diary were designed to interrupt her incessant reading, which was thought to be responsible for her bad headaches. Thus her cousin, visiting the household, ‘‘had undertaken to find me something to stop my reading: churning; and I churned in the cellar till the butter came.’’ In fact, advice writers who had failed in their efforts to promote domestic work for daughters on other grounds often focused on the value of domestic labor as a source of exercise. The Beecher sisters observed that if girls did strenuous housework, their parents would be spared the expense of gymnasiums. ‘‘Does it not seem poor economy to pay servants for letting our muscles grow feeble, and then to pay operators to exercise them for us?’’
Louisa May Alcott, whose collected opus represents a powerful gloss on the domestic debates of late-Victorianism, repeatedly suggested the healthfulness of housework, ‘‘the best sort of gymnastics for girls,’’ according to Dr. Alec in Eight Cousins. Her Old-Fashioned Girl explicitly contrasts the healthy republican daughter skilled in domestic arts with the languid late-Victorian belle, afflicted with boredom because of her lack of home chores. Mothers undoubtedly continued both to supervise and perform much household maintenance, but they did so assisted by domestics rather than their own daughters. What did middle-class girls do instead of housework?
This was a question which greatly concerned commentators, who asked, as did Mary Livermore in 1883, ‘‘What shall we do with our daughters?’’ Mary Virginia Terhune, too, lamented the passing of housework as girls’ raison d’être and with it ‘‘that prime need of a human being—something to do.’’ Parents found a range of things for daughters to do, including the ornamental skills of sewing, playing piano, writing and reading associated with self-culture. Increasingly, also, they sent daughters to school. Common schools designed for both sexes did not include sewing.
In later years, the Beecher sisters observed, ‘‘A girl often can not keep pace with her class, if she gives any time to domestic matters.’’ And they noted, ‘‘Accordingly she is excused from them all during the whole term of her education.’’ Girls themselves noted the increasing power of lessons in any competition with housework. Agnes Hamilton remarked that first her French tutor and then her German homework prevented her from doing her ‘‘share of Monday’s work.’’ It was not long before the work of some girls was reassigned.
Those who were serious about domestic education, such as a composer of ‘‘An Ideal Education of Girls’’ that appeared in an 1886 issue of Education, suggested, in fact, that this disjunction be acknowledged. A girl should receive the same education as a boy until the age of twelve, its author suggested. At that time a girl should drop out of school for two years and learn the complete running of a household, returning to school only with that formal apprenticeship accomplished. Only such complete separation of activities would allow the household its due.”

The Fitting
I got really inspired by Finnpeach's post and I honestly have wanted to write something like this for ages. Please enjoy this F/F 1860s/70s era sweetness.
-
There was no rescheduling it now; Miss Louisa Abbott would be coming via a coach at any minute with the selection of underpinnings to be fit and finished. The problem was that the lady she was set to fit was feeling remarkably under the weather.
Miss Catherine O'Malley sat at the small tea table in her room with the morning tea service in front of her and a lace-trimmed handkerchief in her lap. She'd woken with the prickle of dryness in her throat and the beginnings of congestion gathering in her nose. The cook had brewed her up a spicy ginger tea with a hefty dose of lemon and honey, but it did not seem to be making much difference.
From her window on the upper level of the multi-story brownstone, she looked down at the city street below. It was a quiet, grey-looking morning and despite the fact that it was April, she'd had the fire in her room lit for the day.
Yet unmarried, Catherine had taken up residence in a family property in the city while she completed some education at a nearby ladies' institute. Her small staff took care of her and the house was a popular gathering place for some of the other women of education who also lived nearby. The lengthy salons were spirited discussions between young minds and Catherine relished living on her own in the city.
There was one particular young lady who was not of the same class, but who had come to be a great friend to Catherine. Miss Abbott first came to outfit Miss O'Malley in the finest underpinnings in Boston when she'd first taken up residence in the city. Her mother had sent some money to outfit her with a few new corsets and chemises, and Catherine had contacted Miss Abbott at the recommendation of a friend from the ladies' institute.
From that day, they were quick to become kindred spirits. And then they found themselves becoming closer and more intimate. Miss Abbott had once said that there was nothing more sacred and intimate than the layers of silk and linen that hid beneath a lady's gown. They'd soon discovered the pleasure of exploring each layer of each other, bit by bit.
As was the usual routine when Miss. Abbott visited, Miss O'Malley had given her house staff the day to themselves with the instructions to return in time to prepare her dinner service. James, the footman and valet, had offered to ride over to Miss Abbott's shoppe and tell her of Catherine's ill-health, but Miss O'Malley had declined. She needed the new corset for a ball in Concord the next weekend and there would be no other time to fit it.
In spite of her blossoming head-cold, Catherine found it difficult not to feel a rush of excitement as she watched the street for Louisa's coach. She toyed with the trim of her dressing gown, running her fingers down and across the pale swell of her own chest, rubbing her palm there to warm the chilled skin. She wore just her chemise and robe with an added shawl for warmth. There had been no point to dressing for the day if she was just going to be made to undress again. The maid had set up her boudoir for the fitting with her mirror and a small pouffe to stand upon if necessary, along with a table for Louisa and a chair.
There was the clatter of hooves on the cobblestones slowing to a stop out front and Catherine stood, craning her neck to see down to the street. Louisa emerged from the carriage and the driver unloaded two small cases from the rear.
Catherine stood and rushed to the mirror at her vanity, looking at her pale reflection and the slight tinge of pink around her nostrils. She pinched her own cheeks for a bit of colour and then hurried downstairs to meet Louisa at the door.
She opened the front entrance and stood back, letting the young woman carrying the two cases inside.
“Good morning!” Louisa chirped, giving a broad smile as she set down the cases. She shut the large front door behind her and then turned to Catherine. “Oh, I've missed you!”
Catherine blushed and smiled.
“I've missed you terribly,” she said.
Louisa bit her lip and grinned coyly.
“We're alone?”
“We are,” Catherine confirmed. “The staff have gone down to the wharf for the afternoon.”
Louisa shed her travelling coat and tossed it on a chair.
“Good. Forget decorum then.”
She approached Catherine with the same broad grin on her face and moved to embrace her.
“Oh, sweet, I'm sorry,” Catherine said, stepping back. “I'm afraid I'm a bit under the weather.”
Louisa pursed her lips and then frowned.
“Oh no! Why didn't you send word? We could have done this another day.”
“I have that salon and ball at Malcolm's this weekend and I need the corset for my gown,” Catherine said. “I know, I wish I could have changed things but this was the only time that would work. I do apologize. I don't think I'm too poorly, but-- ehh-”
She stuttered and as if she'd cursed herself by saying she wasn't thatill, Catherine fumbled in her dressing gown pocket for her handkerchief and smothered a small, restrained sneeze.
Tsh-GXHT!
Louisa made a soft sound of sympathy.
“Oh, love,” she said, reaching out to tuck a loose strand of Catherine's hair back and stroking her cheek. “I'm sorry. We'll try to make it as easy as possible.”
“Thank you,” Catherine said, flushing pinker. “I feel like I must look a mess. I do like to be a bit more put-together for you.”
“No sense in being put-together if we're just going to undress you anyhow,” Louisa teased. “Should we go up? If you're not well, I don't want to keep you too long.”
“Yes, it's warmer up there and Mary's set up my dressing room for the fitting.”
They brought the cases upstairs and into Catherine's bedroom, shutting the door to keep the warmth of the fire trapped inside. Louisa unclasped the buckles on the cases and flipped them open, revealing layers of delicate lace and silk and linen.
“I've been hard at work,” she said, reaching in and retrieving a pale pink silk-covered corset with velvet piping and embroidered flowers.
“Oh!” Catherine gasped, reaching for the delicate garment. “Oh, you're outdone yourself! It's beautiful, Lou.”
“It'll suit you beautifully.”
“I don't want you to catch my chill, but I can't help myself, I'm so pleased,” Catherine said, leaning in and kissing Louisa's cheek.
“I'm healthy,” Louisa said playfully. “I don't want you to stay away from me. Can I say a proper hello?”
She sided up close to Catherine and slipped her arms around her, embracing her. They tucked their heads next to each other, leaning in.
“I like your hair like this,” Louisa remarked, running her fingers through Catherine's loose cascade of blonde waves. “I don't think I've ever seen it down.”
“I told Mary not to bother with it today,” Catherine said shyly.
“It's lovely.”
“Thank you. You look lovely today too.”
Louisa pulled back so she could see Catherine's face.
“Well, I knew I was coming here,” she said with a grin. She gestured to the corset. “Should we try it on, then?”
“Yes, please,” Catherine said.
She stood in front of the large mirror and shed her robe and shawl, standing only in her chemise with the lace trim at the neck. Gently, Louise wrapped the corset around Catherine's waist and held it in place at the back where the strings would be tied.
“It looks perfect,” Catherine said, running her hands down the velvet trim.
“It's as if I'm somehow familiar with your shape,” Louise teased and Catherine laughed openly.
“Will you lace me?” she asked. “I want to see how it looks with the gown.”
“Of course.”
With practiced hands, Louisa threaded the strings and began to tighten the corset row by row. She tugged hard, forming the boning into the delicate hourglass shape. As she yanked on the next row, she heard Catherine gasp.
“Is it too tight?”
Heh-TSCHHT!
The gasp had not been a gasp at all, but a slight hitch of breath. The gentle, soft sneeze made Catherine stumble a little but she regained her balance.
“I'm so sorry,” she said, embarrassed. “Louisa, love, my handkerchief is in my dressing gown pocket. Can you reach it?”
“I've got one right here,” Louisa said, fishing in her skirts and holding out a small linen square. “You can return it later.”
Catherine dabbed her nose carefully and sniffled a little.
“Should I keep lacing?”
“Yes, please,” Catherine said, admiring her shape in the mirror.
Louisa tugged the cords tighter until the corset was laced fully.
“The gown's in the wardrobe there,” she said. “Would you help me put it on?””
“Of course,” Louisa agreed. “I'll fetch it.”
“It's the coral silk.”
Louisa opened the large wardrobe and took out the dress, pooling it on the floor and taking Catherine's hand to help her step in. She gathered up the top of the dress and pulled it up over Catherine's corset and helped her into the arms.
“Oh, it's beautiful,” Louisa said breathlessly as she buttoned the delicate pearl fasteners along the back of the dress.
Charlotte stepped towards the looking glass and inspected the fit.
“It very nearly matches the colour of my poor nose,” she remarked, still holding Louisa's handkerchief. She dabbed it gently against the pink nostrils.
“You look beautiful,” Louisa said softly, coming up behind Catherine and pulling her long hair back off her shoulders to reveal the delicate neckline of the dress. “I almost want to say please don't wear it to the ball. I don't want anyone else knowing how beautiful you are.”
Catherine reached up and took Louisa's hand, kissing her knuckles.
“I will have thoughts for no one but you.”
“Good,” Louisa said with a smile, circling her arms around Catherine's waist.
“Louisa, I'm sorry I--” Catherine stammered, slowly pulling away. She pressed the handkerchief to her face as she shuddered with a small, restrained sneeze
Ngh-GXT!
“Bless you,” Louisa soothed, stoking Catherine's hair.
“I--”
Catherine could not speak further. Her breath hitched wildly, the swell of her chest rising and falling as she struggled.
Ehh...hehh---eh-TSGHT!
She stepped away from Louisa's touch, pinching the handkerchief to her nose.
TsXHT! Ehh-TSGHT!
She stifled the sneezes as much as she could, keeping the sound soft and quiet despite the strength of the itch in her nose.
TshCCHT!
She took a shuddering breath and swayed suddenly. Louisa rushed forward, putting a steadying hand on Catherine's back.
Ehh-GHXT! TshHXT!
Catherine swayed again, clutching a hand to her chest.
“I'm ever so dizzy,” she managed to say between hitching breaths. “I-- the corset---I--ehhTSXHHT!”
“Sit, love,” Louisa urged, turning her towards a chair.
“No,” Catherine gasped. “I—it's too tight, I can't—ehh....heh-TSGHT!”
She reached for the buttons of her gown, fumbling blindly at the fasteners.
“Shh, I have them,” Louisa assured her, hurrying to unbutton the back. Catherine clutched at the heavy mahogany wardrobe for support, breath rushing in and out in shallow gasps. And then she began to cough, her chest straining against the corset with each dry bark. Louisa shoved the gown down and began to loosen the strings, tugging and threading as fast as she could until the corset was finally loose enough to pull down.
Eh-TSGHHHT!
Catherine sneezed loud and rough, no longer able to contain her sneezes as delicate stifles.
“Oh, love,” Louisa said, gently taking Catherine's arm. “Here.”
She guided the sniffling woman over to the massive four-poster bed and sat her down.
“Let me,” she said, taking the handkerchief from Catherine's grip and carefully wiping away a mess of tears and snot from Catherine's face. Catherine made a small, whimpering sob and Louisa could see her bottom lip beginning to tremble.
“Oh, sweet, I'm so sorry you're not feeling well,” she said, sitting beside Catherine and gathering her up in her arms. Catherine's head rested against her chest and Louisa stroked her hair soothingly.
“Let's get you settled into bed, dear heart,” she said. “No more fittings today.”

Of the three diseases responsible for the majority of early American epidemics, measles (also known as mumps or rubella) is the only one that is still present in developed countries today. It is a highly contagious virus that causes a terrible, blotchy rash, sore throat, and coughing among other symptoms. (1)
Accounts of measles can be found prior to the 10th century, making it one of the oldest illnesses on record. The following information regarding measles in colonial America comes from the private diary of Cotton Mather, a puritan minister from Boston whose entire family was affected by the disease. It is a poignant account of its horrors, and the desperation of a father who could do nothing as his family was taken from him. (2)
[18 October] …The Measles coming into the Town, it is likely to be a Time of Sickness…
[19 October] [I must]… lay hold on the Occasion to awaken Piety, and Preparation for Death, in the Souls of the children.
[24 October]… [on ≈18 October] my Son Increase fell sick…
[26 October] I must quicken the preparation of my Domesticks…
[27 October] My desirable Daughter Nibby, is now lying very sick of the Measles…
[28 October] … a very sensible Calamity is begun upon the Town… [with] some Degree of Mortality.
[30 October] The Spreading of the Measles… [is much worse in] Families, where they conflict with Poverty… This day, my Consort [wife], for whom I was in much Distress, lest she should be arrested with the Measles which have proved fatal to Women that were with child, after too diligent an Attendance on her sick Family, was… surprized with her Travail [went into labor]… [and] graciously delivered her, of both a Son and a Daughter… wherein I receive numberless Favors of God. My dear Katy, is now also down with the Measles…
[1 November] Lord’s Day. This Day, I baptized my new-born twins… So I called them, ELEAZAR and MARTHA….
[4 November] In my poor Family, now, first, my Wife has the Measles appearing on her…
My Daughter Nancy is also full of them…
My Daughter Lizzy, is likewise full of them…
My Daughter Jerusha, droops and seems to have them appearing.
My Servant-maid, lies very full and ill of them.
Help Lord; and look mercifully on my poor, sad, sinful Family…
[5 November] My little son Samuel is now full of the Measles….
[7 November]… my Consort is in a dangerous Condition, and can gett no rest... Death… is much feared for her… So, I humbled myself before the Lord, for my own Sins... that His wrath may be turned away…
[8 November] …For these many Months… I have often, often express’d my Fear unto my Friends concerning [the measles]. And now, the Thing that I greatly feared is coming upon me!
…this Day we are astonished, at the surprising Symptomes of death upon [my wife]… Oh! The sad Cup, which my Father has appointed me!... God made her willing to Dy. God extinguished in her the Fear of Death… God enabled her to Committ herself into the Hands of a great and good Savior; yea, and to cast her Orphans there too…
I pray’d with her many Times, and left nothing undone…
[9 November] On Munday… [9 November], between three and four in the Afternoon, my dear, dear, dear Friend expired…. [I] cried to Heaven…
[10 November] …I am grievously tried, with the threatening Sickness of my discreet, pious, lovely Daughter Katharin.
And a Feavour which gives a violent Shock to the very Life of my dear pretty Jerusha.
[11 November] This day, I interr’d the earthly part of my dear consort…
[12 November] …The epidemical Malady began upon this Town, is like to pass thro’ the Countrey…. it [might] be a service unto the public, to insert in the News-paper, a brief Direction for the managing of the sick. I will advise with a Physician or two.
[13 November] …I hear of some aged and bedrid people, which I design speedily to visit…
[14 November] This Morning… the death of my Maid-servant, whose Measles passed into a malignant Feaver…
Oh! The trial, which I am this Day called unto in… the dying Circumstances of my dear little Jerusha!
The two Newborns, are languishing in the Arms of Death…
[15 November] … my little Jerusha. The dear little Creature lies in dying Circumstances. Tho’ I pray and cry to the Lord… Lord she is thine! Thy will be done!...
[18 November] …About Midnight, little Eleazar died.
[20 November] …The distressed Families of the Poor to which I dispense… are now so many…
Little Martha died, about ten a clock, A.M.
I begg’d, I begg’d, that such a bitter Cup, as the Death of that lovely [Jerusha], might pass from me…
[21 November] …Betwixt 9 h. and 10 h. at night, my lovely Jerusha Expired. She was 2 years, and about 7 months old. Just before she died, she asked me to pray with her; which I did… and I gave her up unto the Lord. [Just as she died] she said, That she would go to Jesus Christ…
Lord I am oppressed; undertake for me!
[23 November] …My poor Family is now left without any Infant in it, or any under seven Years of Age…
This day, I followed my dear Jerusha to the Grave... with Resolutions… especially what I may do for my own and other Children.
[25 November] … several Things may I do for the Service of the Town in its Adversity… [including] Charitable Distributions among the Poor… I will procure, and I will dispense, as many of these, as I can…
[28 November] Breathing in the midst of so many Deaths, what can there be so needful and so proper for me, as for me to Die Daily, and become a man dead unto this World…
[17 December] This day was kept as a Day of Prayer in the several Churches of Boston, because of the heavy Calamity on the Town. And a liberal Collection was made, for the Relief of the Poor, under the Calamity of Sickness, and growing Scarcity. It was a most bitter season…
[23 December] …I have given to the Printer, a Letter about the Right Management of the Sick under the Distemper of the Measles [note: the actual publication bears a different title; see Mather, 6]; which is now spreading and raging in the Countrey. I propose to scatter it into all parts… to save many lives…. (2)

Why the Best Super Bowl Commercials Were All Cars and Tech
Super Bowls used to mean Tom Brady hoisting another trophy along with ads of polar bears drinking Coke on not-yet-melting polar ice caps, that and the Budweiser Clydesdales. Now the most memorable – sorry, memorably good – commercials are cars and tech. Car ads have always been part of the 54 Super Bowls, but in the dotcom boom years “tech ad” meant money frittered away. Remember Pets.com? Agillon? Epidemic.com? All goners. Maybe automakers did a better job because there really are differences among cars. And the tech guys have learned from the money-wasting days at the turn of the century.
Here are the best car and tech ads of Super Bowl 54 (that’s LIV for traditionalists) along with some that didn’t click quite as well, and the best non-tech ad. We’re linking to ads from places (mostly, automaker sites on YouTube) that don’t have ads in front of them because why should you pay (with your time) to see an advertisement in order to see an ad?
youtube
The Best Ads: Hyundai Sonata, Jeep Gladiator
Hyundai Sonata Smaht Pahk. Two car ads stood out. The Hyundai Sonata spot for Smaht Pahk was the winner because it was funny, it made fun of a socio-economic group you can always make fun (people from Boston, especially since New England departed the playoffs early), and most of all because it is going to sell Hyundai Sonatas. The Sonata is the most important new car of 2020 (see our review), it is the Extreme Tech Car of the Year, and it’s loaded with standard safety features, virtually all of which are on the base, $26,000 Sonata SE. The top-line  Sonata Limited, $34,000, includes Remote Smart Parking Assist, now being called Smart Park. Hop out, press the keyfob, and the Sonata pahks itself at Hahvahd Yahd, and backs out when you return. If you have a narrow garage in Back Bay or Chahlston, you don’t have to squeeze in and out inside the garage.
Too many Super Bowl commercials are ad agency spitting matches using client money to prove who’s more clever, with less thought given to whether the ad sells the product. The “Smaht Pahk” ad will do just that: Get customers to consider Sonata, and realize a mainstream car includes important new technology.
youtube
Jeep / Groundhog Day. This is the other spot that rose above the rest. Bill Murray reprised the 1993 movie Groundhog Day, this time in a Jeep Gladiator, the truck of the year in several autowriter / magazine competitions. It’s funny, it’s nostalgic, and if you don’t know Jeep makes a pickup truck in Punk’n Metallic orange paint and the doors and top come off (you do it yourself), now you do.
The concept of Groundhog Day the movie is weatherman Bill Murray is caught in an endless time loop that restarts each day when he wakes at 6 am to Sonny and Cher’s I Got You Babe, and has to again cover Groundhog Day in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. It’s faithfully recreated in the ad, except no Andie McDowell this time. And to Jeep’s good fortune, the 2020 Super Bowl was played on Feb. 2, Groundhog Day. Appreciating this spot probably helped if you’re old enough to remember the movie from when it was in theaters. But if not, you should, since it’s in the National Film Registry for being deemed “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”
youtube
Amazon Before Alexa. Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi ponder what life was like before Amazon Alexa. The spot borders on slapstick: An 1800s upper-class woman in the parlor tells the maid, “Alexxa, turn the temperature down, two degrees,” the maid takes a log off the fire, tosses it through the window to the sound of shattering glass and a man’s muffled scream. A man in an 1800s city asks the newsboy, “Alex, what’s today’s news?” and he responds, “It doesn’t matter. It’s all fake.” Then in a 1970s Oval Office scene, a Nixon-esque voice commands, “Alicia, remind me to delete those tapes.” In the next room, an admin says loudly, “Yes, Mister President,” then softly, “I ain’t deletin’ …”
Conservatives are probably fuming if they conclude the “fake news” line makes fun of rather than echoes the current administration (hmm, who runs Amazon?), and liberals find it fair recompense for sitting through a patriotism-heavy, pre-game show that did conclude with a touching moment when four 100-year-old World War II veterans took part in the pre-game coin toss, led by Charles McGee, a pilot with the Tuskegee Airman that battled both the Germans and racism.
youtube
Google / Loretta. An old man reminisces about his life with Loretta through old pictures Google calls up, along with a clip from their favorite movie, Casablanca. If there’s a “when they cry, they buy” ad, this is it. It’s going to make everybody wish their parents scanned or at least saved and ID’d their favorite photos for you to scan. Not in the commercial but important to know is that face recognition is getting so good – too good, in China – that the thing that used to hard to do, figuring out who that is in a 50-year-old photo, can now be done automagically.
youtube
Old Luxury (Going Away Party) / Genesis. Hyundai’s Genesis division rolled out its first SUV, the GV80, using young and hip Chrissy Teigen and John Legend as they make their escape from old people, oddly shaped dogs, and an old-world mansion into the GV80. From the staircase, she looks down and says, “To old luxury: You had a good run but now it’s time to choose you up a little bit … I give you young luxury.” Teigen then gestures to the open courtyard doors and points to the GV80 that – oops – hasn’t yet pulled up (“Where were you?” she asks driver Legend. “It was supposed to be a thing and you made it not a thing.”)
Never mind that Audi did essentially the same ad – “Old Luxury” (even the same name) – in a 2011 Super Bowl commercial. In this case, yuppie inmates inhabit a faux luxury prison (a mansion in LA) filled with affluent Boomers / Millennials. They unlock the cell bars and make their way toward a waiting car. A guard releases the dogs (showy hounds). When that doesn’t work, he’s ordered, “Hit ’em with the Kenny G,” and as Songbird plays, some refuse to leave while others do. Two escapees make it the courtyard, a Mercedes pulls up (you see the tri-star hood emblem) and one says, “Lancaster, no, it’s a trap,” and Lancaster replies, “Nonsense, my father owned one.”
But the theme works, and has for ages, going back at least to 1988 and “Not your father’s Oldsmobile.” Actually, it doesn’t always work. America’s oldest car brand, the brainchild of Barney Olds, was killed off in 2004.
youtube
The Other Car / Tech Ads
Porsche did a creditable job with “The Heist”: The Porsche Taycan EV sports car is spirited out of the Porsche Museum in Stuttgart. Once the heist is discovered, the guards argue / squabble over who drives which museum Porsche to track down the Taycan. That gives the viewer a chance to appreciate Porsche’s storied history and possibly begin to realize the Taycan is a continuation of Porsche history, not a bunch of greenies gone mad. The voices were a bit muffled, especially if you were watching the game with noisy friends, and works much better played on a PC with closed captions running.
A Toyota Highlander ad showed the car does indeed have a lot of room as the driver – 20 years ago this would have been a soccer mom commercial – picks up various people in comic distress from various scenes, ending with her son.
A third Hyundai group (Hyundai, Genesis, Kia) ad was for the upcoming Kia Seltos but more about the inspirational story of Oakland Raiders rookie Josh Jacobs and hard times growing up. It left some people wonder what Seltos is. Answer: The same platform as the subcompact and well-established Hyundai Kona, a bit roomier inside, and shipping this quarter.
T-Mobile and Verizon touted 5G service, which is still a ways off. T-Mobile used Anthony Anderson’s real-life, sassy, talky mom. Verizon essentially said that without 5G, emergency responders won’t get their job done as well.
youtube
Microsoft, whose Surface tablets are universally used (mandated) by the NFL, told the story of Katie Sowers, an assistant coach of the San Francisco 49ers. It’s a true story of perseverance and success, but the story was already being told in the two-week run-up to the Big Game.
Audi had an eTron Sportback spot run late in the evening after the kids were in bed, so they missed Maisie Williams singing “Let It Go” from Frozen.
GMC touted the rebirth of the Hummer as an EV in an ad with LeBron James. The Hummer is a ways off, so maybe it was okay to be low-key and laid back. This was not a call to action for hand-raisers.
youtube
Scout, the golden retriever owned by Weathertech founder David MacNeil, had his cancer cured at the University of Wisconsin vet school. MacNeil took a 30-second spot lauding the Badger vets and encouraging donations.  Wisconsin hasn’t gotten this much PR since this mentions by Wisconsin alum / Wall Street Journal sportswriter Jason Gay in his column. Nice touch – who doesn’t like retreivers? – and if MacNeil wants to spend six mil in hopes of getting at least that much in donations to Wisconsin, more power to him. Pets cure a lot of human ailments by being there for you.
Tom Brady made it to the Super Bowl (as one of the game’s 100 best players of the NFL’s 100 years) and also was a spokesmodel for a Hulu spot. Amazon promoted its drama Hunters. Quibi pushed its short video service that launches this spring (nothing more challenging than 10 minutes) and hopes you’ll start saying “I’ll be there in a Quibi.”
youtube
Best in Show (Non-Tech): Lil Nas X
The hands-down winner among non-tech or car ads was the Wild West dance moves showdown between Lil Nas X and Sam Elliott with Old Town Road playing in the background. (The guy strumming the guitar at the end was Billy Ray Cyrus.) Doritos footed the bill and reaped the rewards, as long as remembers remember it was Doritos and not Bud Light or Axe body wash. And yes, when Lil Nas rides off on a horse with cascading speakers, it pays homage to Sheriff Cleavon Little and the Gucci saddlebags in Blazing Saddles.
Fast and Furious 9: Everybody’s still trying to match Bullitt.
There also were ads that continued through the show, especially Tide Pods, the claim being that if you get a stain on your shirt before the game starts, you can much later wash – remember, wash, not eat detergent pods – and the stain comes out, at which point in the last ad, the guy gets his now-clean shirt stained again. There were plenty of ads for upcoming movies – Fast & Furious 9 (photo), Minions, Black Widow, No Time to Die – and the trailers’ special effects made people glad, or annoyed, they have surround sound speakers.
Fox ran a lot of promos for future programming, including one for the Daytona 500 where stock cars appeared to come onto and arc across the field. Conspiracy theorists will see hidden hands at work when a Super Bowl broadcast on Fox News (actually, Fox Sports, but don’t let facts get in the way) runs the Donald Trump commercial midway through the first period when everyone is watching and the Michael Bloomberg spot didn’t get airplay until late in the extended halftime. Fortunately, Kansas City and San Francisco made it close until the final minutes; three late Kansas City scores made for a 31-20 win. So most viewers stuck around all three hours of the game and J Lo / Shakira halftime.
A few ads got remade at the last minute to downplay or factor out death or helicopters (RIP, Kobe). So the death-and-resurrection of Mr. Peanut spot was pretty bland.

Shitlist Halloween Reviews - American Horror Story 1-2 1 of 5
Hello Ladies and Gentlemen, I’m Amateur Fan 2.27 and welcome to this year’s Halloween specials of the Shitlist where bad movies burn, through the next few weeks I’ll be looking over some shows and movies that relate to the traditional holiday that’s been going on for century’s Halloween. And seeing that the new Halloween is coming around the corner (which I am excited to see by the way) I thought it would be interesting to start this year in a different perspective when it comes to the Horror genre.
Anthology Horror.... it’s been around since the early 60s starting with the cult classic horror movies like the Vault of Terror or Tales from the Crypt or in modern times such as the Tales from the Crypt TV series or this weeks TV series... American Horror Story
For those who don’t know American Horror Story is currently one of the best horror shows that’s presently going with a strong fan-base due to the writing, characters and plots per season. It’s also one of few shows that changes location per season such as setting one in an institution for the criminally insane towards a cursed hotel.
The show is created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk who some of you may remember for creating Glee, Nip/Tuck and Scream Queens, and released from 5th October in 2011 on FX but escalated to 10 seasons with the ongoing 8th season Apocalypse which I’ve yet to see.
As said before the show is known for switching different locations as the series progress but it also changes time zones as well such as Asylum (being my favourite season which I will get to shortly) is set in the 60’s or Freakshow being set in the 50’s or the recent series from Murder House and Coven being set in the present day which also benefits the story per season.
Now for something that is known for the series is the actors that the series presents such as Evan Peters from X-men fame for portraying Quicksilver in the Fox series (which technically should be the MCU’s version as Disney has legally bought FOX studios. Sarah Paulson (The People v. O.J.Simpson: American Crime Story) and Lily Rabe (Miss Stevens) who are regulars to the series as they star in pretty much every season.
Though other cast members have been in the series such as Connie Britton, Dylan McDermott, Taissa Farmiga, Denis O’Hare, Zachary Quinto, Frances Conroy, Emma Roberts and Finn Wittrock though some of those I’ve mentioned have been in several series of the show but apart from 3 leading actresses who I think personally stole the show when it came to the series, Jessica Lange who stars as the leading villainess in the first 4 seasons, Kathy Bates who stars from season 3-6 as characters of support and finally Angela Bassett who is more of a powerful character depending on the season.
For this review I’ll be focusing on the first 2 seasons of the show starting with Murder House, a season based on a family moving to L.A from Boston after an affair was caught out which leads them to living in a mansion which dark secrets, which also deals with infidelity, depression family and school violence, which I’ll attempt to ignore that factor the best I can, as well as sexuality of both genders.
After that it will be Asylum, again one of my favourite seasons of the show, which is set in 1964 based in a mental institution for the criminally insane in Massachusetts following an mechanic accused of being a murderer being sent into the asylum along with a journalist being sent there due to her sexuality which mixes along with demonic possession, extraterrestrial abduction and supernatural/scientific influences among patients. The season is obviously based on insanity ut it holds more themes towards Religion against science, racism, faith and corruption.
Before I start, I’m only going to be stating my personal opinions on each season which some of you may not agree with but before you grab your pitchforks, this is only opinion based and for this moment I am only going to go against the characters and not the actors.
Murder House or known as the first season to several fans is in my opinion is one of the weaker seasons and I’ll give my reasons shortly, the season is based on the Harmon family who left Boston due to the wife Vivien catching her husband Dr Ben Harmon having an affair with one his students following a miscarriage.  This does lead to some creative ideas towards the family when they move to L.A. they attempt to do what they can to survive a marriage as well as saving a family especially when it comes towards their daughter Violet who gets into trouble at her new school.
The other characters are quite unique in their own way such as Constance Langdon, their next door neighbour who has some secrets to hide of her own, her daughter Adelaide and her dead son Tate who has a darker secret which lead to a major reveal on his own character differently as the show progresses, and not forgetting Larry Harvey or known as the Burned Man, a former owner of the House the Harmon’s currently resides in.
I like the characters of Vivien and Ben as they are in desperate need of rejoining their marriage from separation, especially when it comes down to affairs, though it is hard to discuss when it is literally taken and written in a realistic tone, I’ve to admit, these characters are my favourite throughout the season.
Violet however is something different, from when she appeared, I knew for a fact that she was going to be a downer towards the end of the season, granted they attempted to make her a key character as she does reflect the events between her parents’ marriage but christ her annoyance gets out of hand very quickly, but there was a twist that some saw coming though I saw different which I will reveal shortly.
Tate Langdon.... I may get this character over and done with, from the moment I saw this character, I knew for a fact that he was going to be trouble, especially when it came to the history of the house as well as an impact towards the family and I mean a BIG impact... You see this season going into different time segments, such as one set in 1922, one in 1965 and one in 1994, Tate is portrayed as a teenager but one thing that I was surprised at was that he committed a massacre at a local school in the show which came back to bite him badly.
He does show interest in several actions as he’s misunderstood, sociopathic and mainly has psychological problems such as outbursts leading to shooting up a school as well as burning Larry which I will get to shortly, I admire the way they came to this character but due to the crimes that the characters has done has seemed to close to home especially what’s going on in America at the current moment, for my American brothers who are reading this, I am sorry for your losses and my prayers who have fallen.
Larry who used to live in the house has a different action towards the Harmons especially towards Ben who is informed that the house has major problems very quickly before things get worse, he did live in the house as they reside in but tragedy does emerge as his burns are explained, you see the House does have the ability to revive those who died their making them ghosts who can’t leave the house, I’ll get to that in a moment.
Larry was once married to Constance shortly after living in the house to Tate’s disapproval which leads him to kill one of Constance’s children to her request against child services, which leads to Tate to snap and go on a rampage leading to burn his step-father alive as well as to go on a massacre.
Constance, who you may think is a nice lady next door but she’s far from bloody nice, at the beginning of the series, she’s seen as a thief, a liar, a monster but she’s more a motherly figure towards her children, she too has connections to the house as well as personal experiences with the ghosts.
She even knows that her son resides in the house because she used to live there with her family, only to move next door due to the tragedy, she lived there with her ex-husband who she killed along with her maid following a rape-attempt which also ended with the maid getting killed in the process.
The other characters are Adelaide who is Constance’s daughter with learning difficulties who is killed during a hit and run on Halloween, Chad Warwick and his lover Patrick who were killed in the house by Tate, Hayden McClaine, the student that Ben slept with who is emotionally obsessed with. Crazed surgeon, Charles and Nora Montgomery and their son turned monster known as the Infantata. And finally Moira O’Hara played by both Frances Conroy and Alexandra Breckenridge, a maid who was murdered by Constance.
The House itself is interesting to look at as well which is known for the crimes that occurred there from different time periods, leading those who died at the residence will have the ability to reappear as ghosts dressed from that error leading them to haunt the location as it is their final resting place, I will discuss the crimes momentarily but first I would state the house or Mansion at this point is one of the key locations of the series and the most well known as it’s the iconic look of the season, you know trouble is about to happen with it as well as its history.
Crimes have occurred there starting with the 1920s with the Montgomery’s with their son Thaddeus being taken killed and then dismembered leading Charles with grief to mend the son with the best of his abilities making the child into a monster known as the Infantata, an abomination from medical science.
1947 It was the location of a dentist where a young actress was to be seen only to be raped and killed following an anaesthetic overdose leading her to be dismembered and thrown into a field leading her identity to be Elizabeth Short, the infamous Black Dahlia.
1968, it was the sorority house which was known as the resting place of two students Maria and Gladys who were killed by an unknown man leading their souls to be trapped there.
1978, it was an abandoned mansion where two twins Brian and Tory planned on destroying it only for Addie to warn them, leading them to be in the basement and violently killed by the Infantata.
1983: Moira was brutally murdered with Hugo Langdon following a rape attempt gone wrong by Constance.
1994. Following requests from his new wife, Larry kills one of Constance’s children in the attic of the house due to him being deformed and not wanting social services to take him, leading Tate to go on a rampage (overdosed with cocaine/crystal meth) killing over 15 students in Westfield High School, leading for a S.W.A.T. team to invade the house and gun him down in front of Constance.
2010: A couple Chad and Patrick are planning a nice Halloween leading to an argument between them leading for Patrick to leave for the Rubber Man (Tate in disguise) to brutally strangle Chad and stab Patrick when he returns.
2011: The Harmon family moves in following the uncover of an affair the husband was having with a student, leading to the ghosts to appear leading Tate to manipulate the family leading towards the daughter Violet to suicide via overdose, Addie to be involved with a hit-and-run, Vivien to be raped by Tate without consent leading her to be pregnant with twins leading her to die due to complications via birth with one of her twins Joseph and Ben Harper to pass when the Ghosts get revenge on the family for leaving.
The history of the house is vague but you have to watch it in order to understand what is going on with the house, I found this season in particular to be weak though following an interesting idea on how the supernatural can infect the world of reality. The problem with it is the characters that reside in the house alone especially when it comes to the teenage daughter, especially when it comes to surviving a broken marriage along with parents.
Now for Asylum which is set in the year 1964 in the mental institution, Briarcliff Manor, an asylum for the criminally insane which is possibly the strongest season of the show due to storylines between characters as well as the setting itself like in Murder House, the setting is home to a series of dark secrets, mainly towards the doctors who run the facility starting with a long list of characters which I will get into momentarily.
This raises a few good ideas towards faith and religion going against science and nature which is a good idea if I’m entirely honest but this also raises a few problems when it comes to questioning our morals in faith and religion. There is also a twist as there is a serial killer known as Bloody Face, a murderer who preys on women with skill that leaves no evidence untouched. Let’s begin with the characters.
Lana Winters played by Sarah Paulson is a journalist who seen closer to home when she is locked in the facility following blackmail against her female lover who is against lead antagonist, I have high respect for this woman to survive the ordeal especially when it came to going through literal hell when it she’s forced against her own sexuality.
Kit Walker played by Evan Peters is thrown into Briarcliff following accusations of being Bloody Face after the disappearance of his wife Alma in attempt to keep their interracial marriage secret, only for her to be abducted. In Briarcliff he is blackmailed by another leading character as well as beaten by both guards and inmates for his ‘crimes’ but he does get his comeuppance at the end.
Grace Bertrand played by Lizzie Brochere is a French immigrant who was thrown in Briarcliff for murdering her family but is a major character in supporting Kit due to believing that he’s not the murderer but he thinks over wise when it comes to her case as she is known as a manipulator in the Asylum.
Sister Jude Martin played by Jessica Lange is known as the major fist of Briarcliff bringing a powerful authority figure towards the inmates leading the guards of Briarcliff with her orders, she also has a hidden past containing a hit-and-run following a drunken encounter with a small girl (fortunately she survived), she is known as wrecking ball in her own way when it comes towards her power of Briarcliff.
Dr Arthur Arden AKA Nazi war criminal Hans Gruper is played by James Cromwell is the chief physician in Briarcliff who has a strong history of violence towards women, including a character I will get to next week when I continue the series at hand. Arden is known to torture his patients even performing sadistic experiments on patients with no family to mutilated patients that surround the woods by the facility.
Sister Mary Eunice McKee plated by Lily Rabe is a young nun who works with Sister Jude closely who favours her naivety as an act of purity, she is one of the interesting characters of the series as it’s seen as she is a sympathising character who becomes more of a monster as the season progresses in the later episodes, she becomes possessed by something deadly when an exorcism attempt is failed.
Monsignor Timothy Howard played by Joseph Fiennes is Sister Jude’s Superior and the object that she infatuates over; though they both run the facility together he is quite aware of Arden’s experiments with the other inmates of Briarcliff. But as a major character of Briarcliff Manor, he’s also one of the strangest characters as he changes his morals before questioning his beliefs first.
Dr Oliver Thredson played by Zachary Quinto is the psychiatrist of Briarcliff hired by Sister Mary Eunice, he’s one of the manipulating characters of this season and possibly the most dangerous characters following his beliefs of the treatment of Briarcliff’s patients though his methods of his occupation are incredible but his methods are over stepped when his identity of Bloody Face is revealed.
The story is pretty obscure to say the least as it is honestly based on insanity alone, mainly because that’s the trick of the season is how it actually works with insanity being the main focus towards the characters on their survival of Briarcliff and how they left with their sanity intact. I highly recommend watching this season because the season is so easily paced between different perspectives in characters especially the villains.
This would be the strongest season by far because it explores religion against our own moral judgement; the writing behind that alone is possibly the best I’ve heard in a long time, especially when it’s from a horror based TV-series. The character development is interesting to look at but it raises a major question against the setting, especially towards their survival in a hostile location. If I’m honest this is possibly my favourite season of the show by far and I’ve yet to see Roanoke and Cult.
As I said before this is part 1 of 5 reviews that I’ll be going over this Halloween, starting with the first 2 seasons of American Horror Story and the next 2 which will be Coven and Freakshow, and after that on the third week I’ll be going over something special for you guys so hopefully you guys will enjoy; aside from that, I hope you guys have a nice Halloween and enjoy the holiday.
