a flag for people who identify as or consider themselves emotionless. they may feel nothing, have very vague and foggy emotions, or reclaim the term, from being called emotionless in a derogatory manner.

this may be due to a variety of reasons, including, but not limited to: disability, neurodivergency, alterhumanity, trauma, queerness, plurality, etc.

you don't have to be loveless, heartless, etc to be emotionless, and vice-versa, but it can be correlated.

flag meaning: the black is nothingness, emptiness. the dark gray is numbness and apathy. the gray is peace in the lack of emotions. the white is solidarity. the red is pride and reclamation.

sometimes saying “I’m happy for you” (whether it’s true or not) is an important social lubricant that helps to maintain relationships.

it’s okay to guess or approximate your emotions and go from there. it’s okay to say you feel something even if you’re not 100% sure whether you do or not. it’s okay

My least favorite thing is when there’s a character that is SUPPOSED to be emotionless, but then they way that they’re written clearly shows tons of emotion?? Like if it’s specified in the story ‘This Character Feels Nothing Unless Blank’, then I could understand if they show honest emotion about that one thing.

However, a lot of the time, that won’t be specified, and the character can feel happy and sad and especially guilty, none of which are things that can be experienced without emotion. Maybe there could be a smidge of ‘I shouldn’t have done that’, but that’s not guilt, that’s observing morals, being aware of them, and abiding by them when possible as a means to an easier life in society.

And I especially hate it when there’s a love interest that the character is explicitly interested in. Now don’t get me wrong, I am aware that most emotionless characters are only there for the character ‘growth’ of gaining emotion, and a very common way to do that is by introducing a love interest. Or maybe the specific exception to their emotionless-ness is love. But really?

I mean if it were the other person who was in love with the character and spent like months trying to get closer to the character, that would be okay, since it would make since with the character and also with the timeframe, maybe. Maybe the other person manages to make the character feel emotion and fall in love with them, or maybe they fail and the character just continues on with life as it were, or maybe they succeed in making them emotion but not love.

This is targeted at a specific series because of how poorly the emotionless MC was written. This could just be me, but I feel like it shouldn’t be too hard to write a character without emotions? Just take a moment and think objectively about the pros and cons of actions, and then decide how the character acts based on that. Plus, ‘emotionless’ doesn’t mean ‘shitty actor’! They should be able to fake emotions just fine!!

Although, and this got me for a second, they can probably have favorite and least favorite things. Nothing like colors, because that’s purely opinion, but things like flavors and textures. Some things are just objectively bad for human senses (like pain (which I will quickly state for the people in the back is NOT an emotion) and inconsistency). They could also fake favorites like faking emotions, though they would probably choose the most common options, like red or blue for colors, even though they don’t actually feel anything about those things.

Admittedly, it would probably be hard to make a likable emotionless character unless they’re good at pretending to not be emotionless, but they’re at least intriguing.
