tagged by @taniushka12 to list some books Ive finished since september!!
The Idiot - Fyodor Dostoyevsky. This was the last major dostoyevsky I had left and you know what HES EVERYTHING TO ME. Autism be damned my boy can display ultimate human kindness & generosity in the face of Fine Society.
Embassytown - China Miéville. This book is bonkers bananas. “What theology that would have been, a god self-worshipping, a drug addicted to itself.” Mr Miéville how did you think of these things in your brain. (If you like Disco Elysium you may enjoy Miéville!)
Don Juan - Lord Byron. I recognize that the ending is Like That because byron passed away from leeches to death and could not finish it but that doesnt change the fact that the ending is NOT CLICKBAIT: I SAW A GHOST AND TOUCHED BIG NATURALS
Leave it to Psmith - PG Wodehouse. Wonderful and silly and the first Wodehouse I have read (I feel like Pratchett was inspired by him). Psmith is like a taffy stretched moist von lipwig.
Tagging @gentlier @emperorclaudiusofficial @sillyzone and whoever else like!!

my take on tsh has long been that if it WERE done as satire (of like academia and white privilege, I guess) it would be hilarious, & I did in fact laugh out loud a lot while reading it, but the fact that it clearly takes itself SO seriously unfortunately means that it sucks very much
oh SAME I remember wondering if other people also found it kind of ridiculous and I’m sort of relieved that they do, but the book itself seems entirely unaware of its own ridiculousness, and some of that is the narrator but I really do think some of it is the author (the copy I was reading had an author interview at the end and I was hoping that wouldn’t have the same seriousness but it kinda did??)

out of curiosity what's your Athena Tea?
OK A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE ASKING ME ABOUT THIS SO I’LL TELL YOU ALL EXACTLY WHY I HATE ATHENA/PALLAS:
SHE TURNED ARACHNE INTO A SPIDER BECAUSE SHE COULDN’T HANDLE A MORTAL HAVING A SKILL
SHE MADE MEDUSA A GORGON BECAUSE ATHENA’S UNCLE RAPED MEDUSA IN ATHENA’S TEMPLE
UNRELATED BUT SHES SO FAKE SHE TOLD THE GREEKS SHE WOULD PROTECT THEM DURING THE TROJAN WAR AND FAVOR THEM OR WHATEVER AND SHE LITERALLY ATTACKED THEIR SHIPS BECAUSE AJAX VIOLATED HER SHRINE
SHE LET CLYTEMNESTRA DIE IN VAIN
YOU CAN ARGUE CLYTEMNESTRA DESERVED TO DIE OR WHATEVER YOU WANT BUT CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING: AGAMEMNON’S A PIECE OF SHIT AND CLYTEMNESTRA DID THE WORLD A FAVOR but rip cassandra
anyway all jokes aside I did a very long paper on how Athena is used in ancient writing as a tool of misogyny and how she navigates gender in a privileged space. that’s the paper i got a perfect score on last semester if anyone is interested in reading it. i’m presenting it at my school as well in april!

And lest you think I was on the right track with today’s TLHoD drawings, here is Gaum’s entire ass, which @emperorclaudiusofficial asked for as a joke
Tumblr media
Unfortunately I shaded and highlighted it so it comes off as completely un-ironic pinup art. :Head in hands:
IMAGE ID: Gaum from behind, looking over one shoulder, in stilettos and green booty shorts that read “agent of the sarf.” A black censor bar that reads “redaction courtesy of the yomesh decency association” covers Gaum’s sideboob. END ID

Blorbo game: Brideshead lol
blorbo (favourite character, character I think about the most): obviously OBVIOUSLY sebastain flyte!! he is in my heart always
scrunkly (my “baby”, character that gives me cuteness aggression, character that is So Shaped): I want to pay anthony blanche to follow me everywhere and comment on my every move like I'm a creature in a nature documentary. he brings me such joy
scrimblo bimblo (underrated/underappreciated fave): julia flyte. tumblerinas may forget you exist because they ignore the plot post-sebastian but I would die for you in a heartbeat. the 'here on the stairs, a minute to say goodbye' scene is one of my favourite in the whole novel
glup shitto (obscure fave, character that can appear in the background for 0.2 seconds and I won’t shut up about it for a week): cara may have not-even-legally married into the flytes but she still carries literally all the braincells for the whole family
poor little meow meow (“problematic” unpopular controversial otherwise pathetic fave): I feel like a lot of people hate charles ryder and ngl I want to smack him for half the shit he does but I also understand him on a fundamental level and thus must love him
horse plinko (character I would torment for fun, for whatever reason): bridey. but like many a weird catholic, he'd probably like it :/
eeby deeby (character I would send to superhell): lady marchmain die in a hole challenge
send me a fandom

@minipliny replied to your photoset “emperorclaudiusofficial: I, Claudius + text posts  i don’t know why i...”
Marjorie do it!!!! Omg.
It occurs to me I have also been intending to watch Picard, which is also on a streaming service for which I don’t have a subscription, so really it’s a question of which age of 1. civilization and 2. Patrick Stewart I want to get into.

3) How do you organize your bookshelves?
This is weirdly complicated because I have way more books than I have shelf space for, and some of them are on a secret shelf in my closet that has nothing to do with deliberately hiding them and everything to do with whether I read them regularly. But the shelf that you could immediately see if you went into my room has reference books on the bottom, followed by history books/historical texts arranged in order of time period, and then (more recent) fiction is on the top two shelves. It’s somehow both more and less chaotic than what I just described.
4) Tell me about that one book that you can’t remember the title of and maybe you just made it up except you remember that one specific thing so clearly.
When I was in my first year or two of high school I read a lot of very random YA and books that featured Polidori as a character while I was in study hall. I’m pretty sure one of them involved reanimating someone with electricity, only I’m not sure Frankenstein was there, but Polidori was, and he was somehow an old man. (Or there was a doctor based on him? Who knew about reanimation?? I didn’t finish it so this is all sounding like a dream, but I think it does exist in some form.)
7) Tell me about learning to read.
I actually don’t remember learning to read, because I think I did it fairly early and I taught myself somehow. I read a lot of things that I have no memory of, except this set of fairy tales that I loved (but weirdly, I mostly remember those being read to me even though I probably could’ve read them myself).
13) Pick a book you would adapt for the screen, given unlimited budget and creative freedom.
Cabeza de Vaca’s Naufragios, because there’s a part of me that would like to see a disaster movie set in the 1520s-30s about people who didn’t experience disaster nearly enough, but I think it would only work if it were slightly absurd in tone and didn’t give Cabeza de Vaca too much credit. He might not even be the protagonist, to be honest.
