Caregiver!Bruno Headcanons

very gentle, very anxious caregiver 

always asks before he touches you, slowly establishing boundaries 

he can’t help tearing up when you cry but he’s very good at comforting you (despite the sympathetic tears) 

puts on the best rat shows for you: running around trying to get them into little costumes and wigs, then giving up and using his cardboard stages 

gets migraines and appreciates some quiet cuddles while he’s recovering 

the rats really like investigating your hair and your pockets 

he stockpiles Julieta’s food so he always has a little treat in case you take a tumble

tries very hard not to know your future: he doesn’t want to scare you away and he’s nervous that he’ll see something bad

After The Rebuilding

Summary: Just a little mini-fic with Bruno feeling lonely, and his sisters coming to take care of him 

No content warnings, just a little dose of hurt/comfort! 

Once he is home, Bruno collapses. His old room is still as gloomy as he remembers it, full of sand and stairs, and it feels nothing like his cozy burrow in the walls, with his books and rats.

Bitterly, Bruno thinks of the days before his solitary room. The time when he and his sisters had shared a single bedroom, full of chaos and laughter, and he had felt at home there with them. This was supposed to be home, but it didn’t feel right, only lonely.

“Bruno?”

As though his memories had summoned her, Julieta’s voice comes from outside his door.

Bruno hadn’t even made it past the hourglass entrance full of sand before slumping to the floor. His sister is so close, but the door is solid between them, and he cannot bid his mouth to form words…

“Bruno? Are you there?” Pepa’s voice, accompanied by a tap on the door.

Bruno presses his lips together, lifts an arm, but he can neither speak nor push himself to his feet. So close, so far. His sisters will leave now, as they always have, and Bruno will be alone, as he has always been.

“I don’t think he can hear us,” Julieta’s voice murmurs. “Should we come back later?”

Tears brim in Bruno’s eyes. He does not want to listen to them giving up.

“He probably has sand in his ears,” Pepa says. “Let’s just go in.”

“Pepa, no-“

There’s a small sound of a scuffle, and the door swings open. Bruno’s wide eyes stare up at his sisters, who are suddenly standing above him in the open doorway.

“…Bruno?” Pepa says. “Why are you on the floor?”

Bruno laughs. The question shakes something loose inside him, and he can’t stop laughing. He doesn’t know why he’s on the floor, and even if he did, he doubts he could explain it to Pepa.

His sister, Pepa. How Bruno had missed her, and now that they’re face to face at last, he’s crumbling, he’s… breaking, the laughter turning to sobs, the tears spilling down his cheeks.

Julieta makes a pained noise and suddenly her arms are around him. Pressing his tearful face to her shoulder.

Bruno clings to her, breathes her in, and then Pepa is clutching him from the others side, droplets of hail falling on the three of them. They catch in his hair, tumble down the back of his poncho. They make a soft tapping against the stone, and Bruno is not alone. His sisters hold him and he is not alone.
