Camilo: Updog.
Antonio: [starts breakdancing]
Camilo: Not yet. Wait until she asks what that is.

I want to psycho analyze the Madrigal’s gifts by the triplets’ line.
Bruno’s is the most obviously worse out of the Triplets. Physically taxing, mentally scarring in some cases, and drives a wedge between him and everyone around him. I think if Bruno had had any cannon children, their gifts would have been similarly bad. -100/10, the future is overrated.
Pepa’s line is interesting to analyze in my opinion.
Pepa has a difficult gift in the first place- she has to bottle up her own emotions to maintain a perfect weather cycle, has to force negative (in most cases) ones to change the cycle, and her bottled up emotions have a chance of exploding in a quite nasty way. I think we can see her gift’s difficulties reflected in her children’s. 2/10, I would be raining all the time, and I would give a big fat middle finger to anyone telling me “you have a cloud!”
Dolores’ is obvious in my opinion- she literally has a heightened sense tuned to what seems to be roughly a mile around the Encanto (give or take), and if she is able to concentrate on a certain set of noises, which in of itself is a difficulty, she’s left with the decision to either share or act on anything she hears. Her gift has slim to no upsides, and I’d go as far as saying that it has no upsides at all. -∞/10, even though my hearing sucks atm.
Camilos’ is a little more subtle, but certainly still prevalent- he/they literally have the ability to shift any part of their body into anyone he has a clear image of- or to even change things about his body he doesn’t like- hello, body dysmorphia?? And I can’t imagine that this ability isn’t taxing- so if he wasn’t constantly eating Tia Julieta’s miracle food, I would bet that his muscles would be sore ALL the time. And having to eat constantly to replace burned energy! -7/10, I already don’t like my face, but I don’t want to have a cure-all for it!
As for Antonio, I don’t honestly know if his gift would have huge upsides like his siblings- but I think it would be like Julieta’s side- subtle, but really serious. Antonio can understand any animal- and they’re probably more compelled to be nice to him (i hope) but that would mean that Antonio probably won’t be doing much socializing outside of his family. Possible social anxiety? He’s got a really good net of people to help him though, so I can’t honestly see much downside to his gift. 10/10, the only good rating, I want to hear gossip from animals about the humans.
And oh, ho, ho! We’ve arrived at Julieta’s side of the family!
At first glance, I think Julieta’s gift looks pretty much without downside- just eat some of her cooking and wow! No more seriously broken bone!
Two things immediately pop out to me- this hinges on Julieta’s cooking, nobody else! I’m obviously not sure how persnickety magic is, but assuming it’s extremely picky, Julieta has to do everything- that means from raw ingredients to fully cooked, and she has to make a LOT. No rest for the weary here!
Second- relying on a magical cure for sickness and injury is concerning to me in two ways. What happens in a situation where (like after Casita falls) Julieta’s cooking isn’t a heal-all? Does she know anything about identifying injuries or treating them? I’d wager very little- given how much time she has to spend preparing her magical food.
And lastly- we saw a pattern here! Julieta has no time (or very little) to do literally anything else other than working with her gift. I’d wager she’d kinda get resentful of having to cook so much- it keeps her from paying attention to people who need her, not her food! Julieta’s gift gets a -2/10 for me, and that’s with me considering that her food could remove nausea.
Isabella Perfecta- on the outside I’d see her gift as pretty damn amazing- grow any flower, make a tree speed run growing, make any garden flourish? Cool!
But I think before Isabella actively changes what she’s growing, I think she could cause more harm than good. Any non-native plant can become an invasive species, if left unchecked. Now I think this is where it gets more complicated- I have a feeling that at least a certain amount of Isabella’s abilities are linked to her emotions, and if she set her mind to it, Isabella could likely remove plants in a wide area, much more effectively than a regular person. So, meh on the oof scale.
However! Her gift is incredibly unique, and we certainly saw that she used it ALL the time, often to try to appease Abuela. Now I’m going to try not to rant about Abuela’s influence on this side of the Madrigals, but the sheer energy Isabella spent on appeasement must’ve meant physical exhaustion. On my scale I’d say 6/10, because I realized that her abilities would help curb deforestation. In terms of taxing, 5/10.
Luisa. Oh, wonderful, beautiful Luisa.
I don’t have a lot to say really, your gift means you’re expected to do all the heavy lifting. You’re taken advantage of to move a building (seriously why did they have her move the church? No enough godly light??) and other things that HAVE NO BUSINESS BEING MOVED! REROUTING A RIVER IS NOT A THING TO BE DONE BY ONE PERSON!
This also means you’re away from the people you want to spend time with- you can pry my thoughts about how much Luisa loves her little sister from my cold dead hands, I’m a last child, I know how older siblings (with 5+ age gap) really want to treat their siblings, and it’s to play/spend time with them at the drop of a hat.
On top of all this? Her entire mental image of herself is being able to serve others in increasingly over complicated ways. She lost her cool at the dinner because she couldn’t do what a GUEST asked her to do. If I was the head of a household and my guest asked my (overpowered and certainly capable) child to move a large object for their own whim, I would kick them out! (Seriously! Mariano is fine, but Señora Guzman is on thin fucking ice!)
In my terms, Luisa’s gift is a 3/10, and that’s because she’s gotta have a heightened balance ability somewhere in there too.
And finally, Mirabel. Oh Mirabel, I literally sobbed every time you felt the gap between you and your family members- as a third child, you are so relatable and it broke my heart!
As a giftless Madrigal, you were seen less than, maybe not intentionally- but the feeling of uselessness was constantly being projected onto you, just because those with gifts wouldn’t allow you to help.
Because of that feeling of uselessness, I think Mirabel overcompensated- tried to do things that would “make my family proud”, show that she’s just as special as the rest of her family, and she shouldn’t be pushed aside just because she has no gift.
However, in a way, I think the lack of a gift saved Mirabel a lot of pain- the pain of never being enough, not if she couldn’t stretch herself to her very limits just to make people happy.
My diagnosis? Mirabel’s lack of a gift is a 8/10, and it’s only an 8 because no gift caused her so much pain.
Long story short, I think that the Madrigal’s family followed a pattern in gift types/burdens, and in the end I would call the gifts the drawback of creating a safe haven. They might be cool, but I would not want a Madrigal’s gift for myself, not even if it meant clear skin.

Mirabel: draw a straight line
Isabela: 〰️
Mirabel: I said straight
Isabela: 〰️ I'm trying
Mirabel: come on, just draw a straight line!
Isabela: 〰️ I'm trying! This isn't easy without a ruler! 〰️
Mirabel: JUST DRAW A STRAIGHT LINE! LITERALLY ONE STRAIGHT LINE!
Isabela: I'M LITERALLY TRYING! THIS ISN'T EASY. IF YOU'RE SO GOOD THEN YOU DRAW A STRAIGHT LINE!
Mirabel: I ASKED YOU TO DRAW IT! YOU HAVE TO DO IT, NOT ME!
Isabela: SHOW ME HOW TO MAKE A STRAIGHT LINE!
Mirabel: NO! YOU DO IT!
Antonio: is this how gay people argue?

I had the idea of “what if Mirabel made some dresses for her family with more design elements on them instead of just the ones they had.”

all hail short king Antonio Madrigal, who at only five years old, followed some rats into the walls of his house, offered some random hombre del saco looking man that claimed to be the uncle his hermano sang horror stories about his room to do some voodoo looking shit AND lent him his favorite plushie for the nerves, all to help his favorite prima save their Casita.
bc he believed every word Mirabel said like it was some message from god

Rainbow family.
[ID: Digital fanart of Encanto. Side portraits of each of the members of the Madrigal family are arranged on a page, on top of a pattern, and connected together by a flowing line colored in a rainbow gradient. At the end of the line, “La familia Madrigal” is written. In order: Abuela has a pink candle, Dolores a sound wave and music notes, Antonio the head of a leopard, Camilo the faces of Bruno and his father, Pepa clouds with rain, Bruno a glass shard with a rat, Julieta some herbs, Maribel a butterfly, Luisa a dumbbell and a rock and Isabela a succulent. All but Maribel and Bruno are facing left.]

Bruno: Baby...?
Y/n: Yes, Brunito?
Bruno: .....Do you still love me?
Y/n: *grabs Bruno by the waist* Of course I do~
Bruno: Then, why don't we have any kids?
Y/n: *confused* We do have kids?
Bruno: We do?
The rats, squeaking sadly: 'Cousin Antonio, our father doesn't love us anymore...'
Antonio: It's okay, I'll love you.

Little things I’ve noticed about the costume design in Encanto
In no particular order because I can’t put my thoughts into a cohesive line even if I tried…
1. Colors
The original triplets have their own colours: Julieta - Teal, representing her powers of healing, Pepa - Yellow, because she always needs to be happy and not ruin the weather, Bruno - Green, because green can represent both good and evil
Pepa’s family are wearing yellow. Felix, who married into the family, also wears yellow but with his own touch of orange stripes. The children are wearing yellow for their mom and have stripes for their dad.
Tumblr media
Agustin’s clothes are white and dark blue which compliment Julieta’s teal. Luisa is wearing white and dark blue like her father and Mirabel is wearing white top and a skirt that goes from teal to blue, a little from both parents.
Tumblr media
The last one is Isabela who is wearing violet. A combination beween her family’s blue colors and her grandmother’s magenta dress, representing her falling into the role of the golden child of Abuela.
Tumblr media
2. Mirabel’s dress
Mirabel has a little from everyone. Starting from the basic design that is a white top and blue skirt just like Luisa, her skirt has teal for her mother and blue like her father.
Now to the details. Her dress has a candle and is full of butterflies, representing the miracle; the butterfly on her shoulder is the same colour as the flower on her father. She has embroidered flowers for Isabela, has a cloud for Pepa and a leopard for Antonio.
Tumblr media
3. Camilo
Camilo is wearing the colours of his family, but in contrast to all the men in the village who are wearing suits and shirts, Camilo is dressed like his tio Bruno.
Tumblr media
4. Dolores
Dolores is wearing a cute red pattern with a red bow, two things that only one other family member has - Luisa.
Tumblr media
5. Antonio
The little guy has a red scarf around his neck that is the same colour as his sister’s necklace.
Tumblr media
6. Isabela
At the end of the movie, when Isabela realises she can create more things than just roses, she changes her dress to dark blue - the colour of her father and Luisa, and she adds different colour patterns just like Mirabel.

Abuela: Pepa! Why are there little handprints all over the walls?
Pepa, whispering: Why are there little handprints all over the walls?
Antonio, whispering back: Because I have little hands.
Pepa: Because he has little hands, Mamá.

The Madrigals with puppets pt 9
Luisa: I think... I think I'm high
Isabela: Luisa Madrigal! What on earth were you doing?!
Luisa: I have no idea. But I see Camilo dressed as Pumba from the lion king while tia Pepa holds Pepita like she's Mary holding Jesus, while looking like she's still going through midlife crisis.
Luisa: Mirabel's crawling on the floor as if looking for her glasses while there's a puppet on her head. Dolores is dressed up like she's about to rap fight a donkey and tio Bruno looks like he's both given up on life and starting to piece himself together at the same time
Isabela: oh no. You're not on drugs. They're putting on a puppet show for Antonio about drugs

I rewatched Encanto and here are some small details that I noticed.
Warning: spoilers, LOTS of spoilers.
During the scene where Antonio got his gift, Dolores covered her ears when a firework went off. She probably does get sensory overload and that’s kind of sad. Considering that she could literally hear Luisa’s eye twitching, I can’t imagine how painful loud noises are for her :(
Tumblr media
I saw someone else point this out, but now that I can see the film in HD I got to see it for myself. When Antonio is exploring his room, Camilo does this motor tic in excitement which could be a nod to ADHD or autism and I think that’s pretty neat.
Update: I was informed that this is a cultural gesture, I wasn’t aware before, but now I know. It’s still a cute scene.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This shot makes me really sad. Everyone else is glowing and Mirabel is the only one upset. It’s also a part of Mirabels imagination, where she just wants her family to be proud of her. Abuela smiling in this shot is also very upsetting, because in every other shot (that’s not a flashback or the end of the movie) Abuelas and Mirabels interactions have been Abuela looking down on Mirabel. That can apply to Isabela too.
Also throughout the movie, whenever something bad happens in the house, Abuela immediately blames Mirabel, without any evidence that Mirabel was affecting the magic. It was one of the few things that geniuenly got on my nerves, but maybe that was the point
Tumblr media
FAMILY PICTURE!!
I just thought it was cute :)) Look at Luisa hugging Mirabel and Camilo with Antonio.
Adorable.
Tumblr media
OKAY, OKAY, BUT I LOVE THE SMALL ATTENTION TO DETAIL LIKE THE FRECKLES ON THEIR FACES AND THE INDIVIDUAL HAIRS ON LUISAS ARMS.
Tumblr media
I love the detail of the hourglass symbol on the door, but I’m confused why that room was there in the first place.
Sure it’s so that nobody would find the prophecy, but why would the room fill up with sand and endanger anyone that enters especially if that person was a part of Brunos family.
Tumblr media
Again, I’m obsessed with the attention to detail.
I love that we can see the individual stitchings of her bag or the small grains of sand on her clothing/hands/hair.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I LOVE THAT BRUNO’S JUST VIBING IN THE BACKGROUND like ah yes this is a bop.
Anyways, I love that Dolores is whispering because she knows that he’s there and can literally hear him walking around.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also some shot’s from Camilo’s verse because I am genuinely obsessed with this boy. The gender envy is real.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I also love the idea that the reason why Camilos perception of Bruno that of a 7 foot tall mythical rat man is because he only saw him when he was much younger and he just seemed taller and then currently they’re both like only 5′6.
I also wonder if because of the towns completely warped sense of who Bruno actually was made Camilo think of him as more of a local legend than a part of his family.
Tumblr media
Mirabel looks so done with Isabelas shit.
Tumblr media
You can literally hear Dolores tapping on her nails on her glass, the sound effects are phenominal.
Tumblr media
This is the saddest shot in this entire film.
The fact that he still eats dinners with his family because he doesn’t want to be excluded, but nobody knows that he’s there (except Dolores). He doesn’t even have a plate, it’s just drawn on the wood D’:
Tumblr media
Abuela: ‘‘Pepa, Calm down!’’ Pepa: ‘‘I am doing my best.’’ Felix, being the supportive husband that he is: ‘‘Yes.’’ 🤨 Pepa: ‘‘You’re lucky that it’s not a hurricane.’’
My favourite piece of dialouge in this movie.
Tumblr media
I love the different colors on Isabelas dress. I can’t be the only one that headcanons her as a lesbian right?
Tumblr media
I’m sorry, but Bruno putting a bucket on his head to headbutt a way out of the casita was one of the funniest shots I’ve ever seen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
‘‘I knew he never left, I heard him every day’‘ 💀
Tumblr media
The doorknob that the family gives to Maribel at the end of the movie, is the same doorknob that was on the magical door when she was 5.
I also appreciate that Mirabel didn’t get a gift in this scene, even though for a second it seemed like she would. I like the idea that her gift is metaphorically being the glue that keeps her family together.
Tumblr media
How the hell did this table not topple over. What’s up with the physics here?
Tumblr media
AAAAND ending shot.

Downfalls of the Madrigals gifts along with the obvious main downfall
Dolores: She is absolutely terrible at keeping secrets when she’s overstimulated. She’d probably accidentally tell Pepa that Isa is a lesbian when it gets too loud and Dolores needs to vent. Pepa already knew though, everyone already probably figured it out- Isabela: She attracts so many bees to the Casita, and Agustín just hides out with Julieta a lot so he can avoid the deadly army of bee’s Isa brought home. Luisa: Muscle pain. Yes, she can’t feel when things are very heavy with her gift, but since she is constantly busy she probably has the worst muscle pain in the whole world and she doesn’t even have time to get painkillers or something </3 #justiceforluisasmuscles Camilo: This boy eats way more than the average person, like 10X more or somewhere close to there. He would shapeshift into people of various heights and weights and that just lessens his own weight, so he could eat a feast and still be hungry.
Antonio: The animals teach him curse words. The first time he repeated a curse word from an animal there was a hurricane.
Julieta: She literally never gets injured. It’s not because she just heals herself, she’s just incapable of injury. She’s never broken a bone or gotten a paper cut.
Pepa: If Pepa already had high emotions before she got her gift, then they got even worse afterwards. Her gift painfully increases her emotions, so when she would’ve even been just a little sad, she’s would now be flooding the town.
Bruno: Seeing futures (i worded that badly 💀💀) takes up a LOT of stamina, so Bruno is always excruciatingly tired.
