I’m gonna write a few “I’ll make my own gift” au prologue-ish one shots before getting into movie plot because I do want you to understand how much the village loves Mira
Mirabel dashed into town with even more energy than usual. For a good reason too, since it was her birthday! On her sixth birthday mirabel was… less than enthusiastic about it. The memory of her fifth birthday had sullied the holiday for her, and she didn’t expect nearly as much fanfare as the rest of her family got on their birthdays. Imagine her surprise when she trudged into town like any other day and was met with the entire village pampering her and persistently keeping her away from any work. Mirabels excitement for her birthday each year was renewed. Now, she was turning 10. A very special age, she was told! The big double digits is what some adults called it. “Mirabel!” Oscar called to the girl as she finally arrived at the bottom of the hill. Since he and his wife Inez were the first ones to take her under their wing, they were usually in charge of monitoring birthday party preparation. Their work was beautiful but they could really stand to change into something not covered in paint or clay dust. “Happy birthday!” Inez peeked down from where she stood on a ladder, putting up ribbons in mirabels favorite shade of blue. “Thank you senorita Inez!” Mirabel hopped between her feet happily. “Why don’t you go meet with the rest of the village, I’m sure they have plenty prepared for you.” Oscar encouraged, handing the last ribbon to his wife. “Yes!”
There was plenty prepared. Enough that kept the girl busy all day. A special breakfast was already made by her mother but that didn’t stop andre from making her a special birthday lunch and dinner (he even teamed up with Julieta to make an impressive platter of desserts) And throughout the day mirabel watched as villagers deposited gifts onto the very large gift table in the square, but she was kept away from peeking at a few by other kids, being lured into dances and games. A few people managed to sneak her away to personally open their gifts every once in a while. alicia gifted her a beautiful dress like every year before. Cecilia, who was the best wood worker in town, gave mirabel a small set of new whittling tools, and a book on animals she could make. reeve (the only respected metal worker around) gave her a set of jewelry he made personally. lian offered glass cactus sculptures and Cassandra gave her a brand new notebook. And of course nydia couldn’t come up with a good gift idea once again this year and instead volunteered to entertain the younger children an extra bit so mirabel could relax.
Eventually though, things did quiet down enough for Cecilia to pick up mirabel, leading her away from the party and to the edge of the town where only the portrait of the mountain surrounding the encanto could be seen. But now, a bit further out than any other house was a barn. It was obviously brand new and was at the very least two stories. “For you.” Cecilia put the girl down, who only stared in awe before getting nudged forward by the wood worker. “A… a whole building?!” Mirabel gasped, stepping up to the door pulling the door a bit. “All for you.” Cecilia assured her. Mirabel finally opened the door. It was clean and very spacious. It was empty as of now, but a ladder led to a loft with a balcony outside accessible from it. “It’s really mine.” Mirabel was on the edge of tears. Did she deserve this? A whole barn for herself? “It is.” Cecilia confirmed, kneeling. “Nydia, reeve and I made it together. We decided to leave it a bit plain so you could decorate it to your hearts content. Do you like it?” “I-I love it- but I…” mirabel stuttered through sobs. Cecilia only reached out a comforting hand. “Since you were never given your own room, we decided to give you this. We made it further out so it would be a private place, and tried to find the best landscape to relax you. We can’t give you a gift or a magical room, but you deserve a place for yourself, ok?” Mirabel nodded, still sobbing. It was clear that with the oncoming birth of her primo this was a needed gift. “Thank you…” mirabel hugged the woman tightly as she picked her back up. “Just tell us if you need any help decorating the place ok?” Mirabel nodded into her shirt.
[ID: Digital fanart of Encanto. Side portraits of each of the members of the Madrigal family are arranged on a page, on top of a pattern, and connected together by a flowing line colored in a rainbow gradient. At the end of the line, “La familia Madrigal” is written. In order: Abuela has a pink candle, Dolores a sound wave and music notes, Antonio the head of a leopard, Camilo the faces of Bruno and his father, Pepa clouds with rain, Bruno a glass shard with a rat, Julieta some herbs, Maribel a butterfly, Luisa a dumbbell and a rock and Isabela a succulent. All but Maribel and Bruno are facing left.]
Summary: you and Camilo are in a happy relationship, but you're always to shy to do something.
You and Camilo have been dating for a while now, he's been the bestes boyfriend you could ever ask for. You two met the first time, when you and your family moved to the small Village Encanto.
When he first catched your eyes, he knew that he needs to get to know you and befriend you. He was the one, who showed you around and told you everything you need to know. But this boy has been constantly flirting with you.
He called you different things like:
Which made your heart skip a beat every time, you weren't used to get called these things. You have been always shy when it's about boys.
You never even been in a relationship before. So this is your first one, and you can't screw it. Camilo is being the sweetes boy as he can, Felix and Pepa taught him well.
Ever since then, he's been affectionate to you in different ways, even if it's just words or small kisses and touches he made sure that you felt loved. But you have been way to shy to do the same.
The biggest step you made was a peck on the cheek.
And hell you felt bad, because mainly Camilo was the one who did all the things. You feel frustrated and sometimes you hate your shyness.
But Camilo thinks its cute
You sigh frustrated as you sit down on a bench, in the village. You've been thinking how you can make Camilo feel loved too, you didn't want him to think you didn't. You adored this freckled curly boy.
"Okay even though I don't have Dolores gift, I can hear you miles away when you sigh like this" you hear someone next to you, you look up and see Mirabel, one of your closest friends. "Come on, tell me"
"It's just-" you sigh "I feel bad, since I'm with Camilo in a relationship, he's been the sweetest ever. But, I never am able to do anything. Every time he's around I get so nervous that I think my heart will beat out of my chest any second, and my cheeks get red that I feel my whole body burning" you whine and hide your face.
Mirabel chuckles and rubs your back in a comforting way "that's what you're worried about?" She asks gently, you nod. "Well, as far as I know Camilo doesn't mind that you're being like this"
"I know, he tells me everytime that he finds it cute. But he deserves as much as love as he gives me, even more" you look up with a sad expression to, watch some kids playing around. "I just want to be able to make one time the first step"
"I just want him to feel loved, that's all I want"
Mirabel looks worried at you, she really feels pity for you. You're known as the shy girl in the village, but when you're around her it's different. You both are best friends, this side of you only knows her.
"We'll have you tried to... I don't know just do it?" She says, you look at her "I did, but ... I just can't when he looks at me with these big emerald eyes. I just... feel nervous"
"I know it's hard for you, but try when you're around him to be more confident. He's your boyfriend (Y/N), he's never gonna judge you or be disrespectful towards you. We're talking about my Primo Camilo, he's so madly in love with you he wouldn't even think to do this" Mirabel tries to encourage you, you smile a little when you think about that.
"Yeah you're right" you smile "I always am" she smirks, both of you chuckle. "When you see him, just remember he would never judge you, okay?"
The sun sets and it's a beautiful atmosphere in Encanto, the day is almost finishing and everyone can try to relax now. Even the Madrigals are finished with their chores.
So, you decided to visit your boyfriend. As you're infront of the casita, you wave slightly. "Holá Casita" you say, and the house waves with one of the windows which makes you chuckle. You step into the house and look around.
You take a deep breath, to calm your nerves down. "You can do this, he's your boyfriend. No worries" you whisper to yourself, as you look around again to spot someone.
You hear footsteps coming down, you look up and meet two green pair of eyes, which start shining when they see you. "Mi Amor!"
The curly boy takes the last steps down and walks over to you, you swear you can feel the heat rising on your cheeks and as well hear your own heartbeat. You wouldn't be surprised if even Dolores heard it.
He walks over, and places a soft gentle kiss on your forehead. "Hey" you whisper, he takes your hands and looks at you with his sweet smile. "What you're doing here? I was just about to go over to your place"
You bite your lip, and remember Mirabel's words. "I-I wanted to surprise you" you smile, he chuckles. "Well that was a real one" he holds your hands still.
"Uhm...." you start, while he looks at you curious. "I uhm... wanted to ... "
"Yeah?" He smiles.
You take a deep breath. " I wanted to ask you something, actually" you tremble slightly, which is nothing new when you're around him. He rubs your knuckles gently with his thumbs to comfort you.
"Easy Mi Amor, you can tell me everything" he tells you, while he asks himself what you wanna ask. "I wanted to ask you... Ifyouwouldliketogoonadate" you mumble the last part.
But Camilo heard it clearly, he blinks at you suprised, and gets a small blush on his cheeks. But he needs to be sure, if he heard it right. "What was that Mi Vida, I didn't understand you at the last part"
"I-" you squeeze his hands slightly "I wanted to ask you, if you would like to go on a date... with me?.." you look at him nervous. Camilo tries to process what just happened.
Oh boy, he is screaming internally and crying because of your cuteness.
"C-Camilo?" You ask, because he's been just staring at you which made you feel anxious "did I say something wr-" you start but get interrupted by him "NO! No no... I'm just" he takes a deep breath "Surprised you would ask that- but in a good way of course! And yes I would like to go on a date with you Mi cielo" he assures you.
You start to smile over your face, you actually did it! You asked your boyfriend for the first time if he wants to go on a date. It's a small step, but a good process!
He chuckles and kisses your cheek "were you nervous to ask me that?" He asks, you nod slightly and look at him. His heart melts, he pulls you for a squeez.
"Ay dios mío, why do you have to be this cute?!"
You chuckle and snuggle at his poncho, proud of yourself. Even if it's nothing big, you are very proud that you had the courage to ask him out.
And also is Camilo, he is very proud of you. Even though he likes it when you get flustered and shy around him.

Okay I want to say something about the ending of Encanto. (spoilers below)
As I was watching this scene with Mirabel and Abuela, I started feeling somewhat sad/bitter in a way of "this is a good message, even if unrealistic. This is a kids movie, so the positive message is necessary and hopeful, but the ending afterwards couldn't happen in real world."
But here's the thing; This COULD happen, it is realistic! Why?
Because Abuela Alma Madrigal was the one to go and search for Mirabel. She wasn't seething somewhere and blaming her grand daughter. She was looking for her just like everyone else in the village.
When she found her, she didn't yell at her or push her even lower and pile layers and layers of guilt onto her. Mirabel laying out the truth of who Alma has become while she was trying to preserve the miracle her husband left behind, and also assuring the community (and herself) that they will not lose this home, clearly opened her eyes. And the reality struck deep.
Alma apologized to Mirabel. She shared her story, her pain and apologized for blaming Mirabel. This is what makes the happy ending of the movie possible and beliavable and as realistic as a magical Disney movie can get;
An old woman who is a powerful figure in the community, made the first move and acknowledged the wrong she caused, and her granddaughter was willing to understand and remind her that the family is able to overcome and fix anything, as long as they do it together.
It wasn't Mirabel or the family pushing Alma to do this; Alma decided to share what she went through and didn't use it to try and justify her behaviour, or ask for forgiveness.
Again, this doesn't mean that all is forgotten; she still hurt her family, even if she did not mean for that to happen. If her family members were more bitter, or she simply gave an apology and returned to the same behaviour before everyone lost their magic, there would be no fixing.
But she tries. And Mirabel understands and helps. Everyone helps and together they form an imperfect, flawed family, that still loves eachother. And that will absolutely have to navigate around the things they learned and realized.
If Alma wasn't the one to find Mirabel, if she didn't admit the truth herself and acknowledged it, and if Mirabel didn't acknowledge her Abuela' suffering and bravery, extending a hand and a chance of change with help, the movie would end very differentely.
I wanted to write this, because my self projection on the family dynamics and Mirabel as the protagonist, muddled the details of what was actually happening right in front of my eyes. Maybe it happened to someone else as well, so I wanted to add my two cents to the ever growing wonderful amount of posts where people point these details out.
Abuela Alma was willing to accept change when it was offered, after admiting her wrongs. And that's what makes the difference.
Okay, but the fact that Bruno probably heard the song “we don’t talk about Bruno” and then in “All of you” the first thing he sings is an apology about THE WEDDING is making me so so sad. He doesn’t deserve this.
I think one of my favorite things that have come out of Encanto is seeing WOC (Latinas and Afro-Latinas) not having to jump leaps and bounds to cosplay as a character they love. The cosplay is already there in the curly hair, the glasses, the clothing.
The trailer for the new Disney animated film, Encanto, just dropped and IT LOOKS GORGEOUS!!!
But can we all just stop and admire how much personality and character development is already being conveyed by Maribel (the main protagonist, I’m assuming) in her outfit alone?
To me, it looks like she took already made clothing, and then was like, “I think this needs more color”. And then proceeded to embroider without a plan. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if the embroidery continued to spread like a doodle gone wild lol.
