Mirabel’s glasses
**Warning: Encanto spoilers**
Of all the magical Madrigals, only Mirabel wears glasses. This is an important aspect of her character, because the glasses act as a metaphor for Mirabel’s ability to truly see her relatives.
Mirabel is the only one to see how nervous and frightened Antonio is about his Gift ceremony, and she’s the only one to help him overcome that
Mirabel is the only one to see that Luisa is overworked and suffering from that; this leads Mirabel to give Luisa permission to take a break, the very thing Luisa needs
Mirabel is the only one to see that Isabel is tired of trying to live up to her family’s expectations, so Mirabel gives her permission to grow things other than roses and to experiment with her powers, and to say no to the marriage Abuela has arranged for her
Mirabel is the only one to see that Bruno still loves his family and is still worthy of being part of the family and community
Mirabel is the only one to see how badly her grandmother is suffering, how deep her trauma runs and how much she needs healing
It’s Mirabel’s vision of other people that allows her to put her family on the path to healing and to help save the Encanto.
BUT
Mirabel can’t see herself, not until the end of the movie, because she’s looking outward for validation. The glasses are the sign of Mirabel’s outward-facing vision, her ability to see other people as they are and to uplift them, but her own internal vision of herself is blurred because she’s still measuring herself against her family’s abilties and expectations.
It’s not until the end of the film when Mirabel has saved the Encanto and receives the doorknob she was denied as a child that she finally sees herself both as a worthy human being in her own right and as a worthy part of her family and community. When she sees herself reflected in the shiny surface of the doorknob, she finally can say that she truly sees herself as a whole person, the very same sort of thing she has been doing for others all throughout the rest of the film.

You watched Encanto?! I couldn't help but feel like the story part was a bit underdeveloped if I'm honest but I loved all the characters in this movie! And it's like since the movie wasn't so concerned with PLOT, they developed the characters more. Headcannon: Isabela is gay, falls in love with a florist (maybe Jamie's niece who moves to Colombia) and they open a flower shop together full of new and gorgeous types of flowers! And cacti and shrubbery and succulents!
I did, I loved it. I honestly really appreciated its character-driven nature. It would have been so easy to make it about Big Bombastic Bad Guys or something, especially with the magic element, and I love that they chose a quieter route. I adore the characters, one and all--and diversity of character DESIGN--and the decision to tell a story about facing and combatting generational trauma? Glorious. The depictions of anxiety and high-pressure family life, chef's kiss. And Mirabel at the center of it being so clever and kind and maternal, set up as a gentle foil to Alma's terror of losing her family again. The transfer from hanging on too tight, the exploration of how it's actually kinder and more powerful to let go, to let things bloom as they may. It got me. (Also, Luisa's song? Fuckin' banger anthem for eldest children everywhere, might be my fave among faves.)

content warning: encanto spoilers, just a general rant about how people treat Abuela Alma (from a white persons perspective, so take this lightly) and just other things i've seen, i struggle with my words so, if this is confusing, just ignore it or ask for clarifications
So, i've been noticing ALOT of just general hate towards alma now let me say this, i get it. Once people see a mean older person in a family, we immeadility grab our pitchforks(TAKE THIS FUCKINGLIGHTLY I AM JOKING) and go crazy.
but the movie explained why Alma.. is the way she is? i guess.. not really, she was forced out of her home, literally. along with the other people of her village.
Tumblr media
this is a REAL thing that happens in colombia and other latine countries, it's terrifying, it's scary and it's real. Alma has trauma and most likely generational trauma, it wasn't like she meant to hurt her family and pressure them.
i really hope they make Encanto a show as well, to really go through the issues of being in a latine(or asain, black, etc) home where generational trauma is extremely common.
this movie isn't about lgbtq+, it's about latine communities, specfically families, ALOT of families have been effected by events like these.
anyways, i'm rambling, all i ask is, take a second look into the movie, really take yourself out of your shoes and put yourself in alma's
but it;s okay to hate a character, what is not okay is to ignore the issues that encanto touched up on.

Encanto spoilers.

I just realized…..everything Mirabel says she would do in “Waiting on a Miracle”….she does.
She does move the mountains. She does make new trees and flowers grow. She does heal what was broken.
I’m crying,, Abuela was right. “The miracle is you”. That was all Mirabel. The miracle she was waiting on was always herself. 🥺

I was thinking about Dolores and I think her power is super hearing because she pays attention on things. Like she was the only one that noticed Luisa's eye was doing that thing. And when she was without her powers she immediately realized when a chance to talk to Mariano.
