Rereading Engaged to the Unidentified.
Tumblr media
Had two thoughts.
First is it absolutely crashes and burns the Reverse Bechdel Test, in that neither Hakuya nor Kureha nor Arata (Konoha’s brother and Mashiro and Hakuya’s cousin—the anime doesn’t make it to their intros, I think) ever have a conversation by themselves without the girls around where they don’t talk about the girls. But that’s fine because the story is about the girls, and the boys in their lives are a part of that. A story with the genders swapped that’s about a bunch of guys, and the girls in their lives are a part of that, is fine too, because the Bechdel Test is only slightly more respectable than the Brown Paper Bag one and markedly less useful than the Knee one.
youtube
The other is that the werebeasts’ ability to make people just ignore them, or that something is weird, is an actual thing in European folklore. In I think Italian legends it goes for all wolves but especially werewolves, that they can make you look away from them. I think it was Montague Summers or Sabine Baring-Gould who suggested it was based on them more or less using human fear of wolves to bully you into ignoring them. (I would suggest a senior wolf’s ability to make a junior wolf break eye contact, if you wanted to incorporate it in urban fantasy with modern knowledge of wolf behavior.)

Anime Review - Engaged to the Unidentified (S1)
Tumblr media
I watched this one once when I was younger and growing older definitely changed my perspective on it.
Watch Engaged to the Unidentified if: - You enjoy rom-coms and all the tropes involved - You want something relaxing and relatively low-stress - You like a supernatural element (i.e. Fruits Basket)
Do NOT watch Engaged to the Unidentified if: - You are easily upset by older characters acting strangely towards minors - You don't like "fluff"/non-plot-related content - You're hungry- there's a LOT of cooking in this show!
NO SPOILERS below the cut- continue safely!
Ah, "Engaged to the Unidentified." Or as I call it, the poor man's Fruits Basket. Seriously, the entire plot of this thing is basically just Fruits Basket. And that includes all the weirdness that comes with that show.
Tumblr media
Engaged to the Unidentified is about a girl named Kobeni who finds out on her 16th birthday that her grandfather arranged her to marry a young man named Hakuya, who will be living with them (along with his little sister) starting that very day. It's a classic fanfiction trope, except Hakuya isn't your typical dream-boat, which I really like about him. He's not dreamy or romantic, he's just a teenage boy. I have a theory that he's written to be autistic (expresses very little with his words and face, hyper-fixated on building his matchstick houses, difficulty expressing emotions, etc) and I like that about him too since I think he's done well. Anyway, Kobeni finds out that Hakuya and his sister have a secret, and that her past (which she's largely forgotten) is intertwined with theirs.
Now, on to what makes this all suck- Kobeni's sister, Benio. She exists only to cause problems, not just for the main character, but also by creepily preying on ANY young girl in sight. It's even mentioned that Hakuya's sister is 10 years old, and Benio still has creepy feelings for her and does weird things like buying her underwear and following her around. It completely takes me out of what otherwise would have been a perfect plot.
Tumblr media
That aside, where this anime really shines is the side characters. I like how Kobeni has a best friend at school who isn't part of the main cast. I like how the other members of the student council (of which Benio is president) are fleshed out and have personalities and interests. Both of the main characters also have moms (but not dads, strangely) that make appearances and have their own personalities. I think in shows like this it's quite easy for the side characters to fall flat, so it was nice to see some dynamic characters happening.
Tumblr media
I'd recommend this show to ANYONE who loves rom-coms. It's classic and has all the silly tropes- miscommunication issues, Valentine's day chocolate, tsunderes, etc. I would warn anyone with an ED to be a bit careful with this one and make sure you're in the right frame of mind to enjoy it- there is discussion of Kobeni's body that I don't think all audiences would be prepared for. But if you're willing to overlook its MANY flaws and sit out the slow burn, you'll be rewarded with a relaxing, enjoyable watch. 6/10.

My Review of Engaged to the Unidentified
Tumblr media
(a.k.a. Mikakunin de Shinkoukei)
Tumblr media
How did I get into this anime? Your guess is as good as mine. I think I saw some memes or heard the opening theme a couple of times that I got curious. Yes, I add animes to my watch-list because of ridiculous reasons like that.
Tumblr media
It’s the morning of Kobeni Yonomori’s 16th birthday. She had a feeling that this year was the start of something new because of her age. In this family, she was in for the surprise of her life. Not even 16 for a few hours, her mother drops a bombshell that Kobeni has a fiancé and that he is going to live with them from here on out. This is an arranged marriage brought about by Kobeni’s deceased grandfather. When he was alive, the family was not to go against the grandfather and I guess that’s going to continue now that he’s dead.
Tumblr media
Kobeni’s fiancé is named Hakuya Mitsumine. He’s a space-cadet. He’s also NOT a main focus in this show despite all that I just said. That’s because along with Hakuya, his baby sister Mashiro is going to live with the Yonomroi family and attend school with Kobeni and her sister Benio. Who the hell thought of the genius idea of having this nine-year-old attend high school? Anyways, Mashiro is the show-stealer despite this sudden fiancé storyline. Let’s watch the wacky misadventures of two families uniting as one under the pretense of an arranged marriage. And watch Mashiro do cute things that steal the scene.
Oh yeah and Hakuya is some entity that can’t be explained. The entire family is.
BETWEEN THE SUB AND THE DUB: Oh thank God, no dub. Sorry, as of recent I’ve been on the bad end of some pretty abysmal dubs brought on by Sentai Filmworks. Okay, I guess that’s a little mean. I just cringe when I hear noticeably 50-year-olds voicing teenagers. But that’s my gripe for another review. The sub contains quite a few people that I’m not too familiar with. I was totally dumbfounded when I learned that Emiri Katou didn’t voice Mashiro. I swear to God every time that chibi monster opened her trap that was Mayoi from Monogatari. I cannot be the only one who thinks like that. Anyways, here’s what you might recognize these folks from.
*Kobeni is played by Haruka Terui (known for Mei on Yashahime, Momoka on Idolm@ster: CG, and Chihaya on Persona 5)
*Benio is played by Eriko Matsui (known for Nao on Idolm@ster: CG)
*Mashiro is played by Yuuri Yoshida (known for Tomomi on FLCL: Alternative and Lactic Acid on Cells at Work)
*Hakuya is played by Wataru Hatano (known for Gajeel on Fairy Tail, Shinsou on My Hero Academia, Kasanoda on Ouran HSHC, Harvar on Soul Eater, and Spartos on Magi)
Tumblr media
SHIPPING: Ooh boy, an arranged marriage. On the plus side, it doesn’t look like this anime is a harem despite the amount of cutesy anime girls. Hakuya seems to recall knowing Kobeni in the past because they played together as children. Kobeni however doesn’t remember. This probably has to do with an accident from childhood that prevents her from remembering long-term or something along those lines. Oh yeah and the fact that Hakuya is some kind of dog creature. Of course, Kobeni wasn’t going to remember. Hakuya seems very loyal to Kobeni and let his feelings out early on that he likes Kobeni. At least this guy likes her for more than just her big bust and child-bearing hips. That little Mashiro is such an imp! But let’s move onto the other part of this.
Tumblr media
Sister love! Benio loves her sister Kobeni. She really loves her. It’s almost on a level I haven’t seen since Yuru Yuri. I’ll get to that suspicion soon enough. And when Hakuya and Mashiro moved in, her sights are set on the tiny Mashiro. Mashiro doesn’t like Benio. Kobeni doesn’t care for a lot of Benio’s lovey-dovey onto her either. So, who likes Benio? Fellow classmate and student council member Konoha does. Benio’s underclassmen love her too, but Konoha loves Benio more than life itself.
Tumblr media
Konoha loves Benio so much that she even feels threatened by Kobeni. Benio’s own freakin’ sister. Okay, when talking about Benio, that is very understandable. But Konoha eventually set her hatred onto Mashiro. Oh, and she also might be a special entity from the mountains too.
Tumblr media
That’s why she decided to be bold and demand that Hakuya marry her.
This series is something else.
Tumblr media
SETTLE SOMETHING FOR ME: Indulge me a little, will you? I can’t be the only one thinking the same thing here. Is there some kind of correlation between this anime and Yuru Yuri? Something other than the fact that they are animated by the same company! I know that they are both created by two different people. But I feel like they’re connected. Or not! Maybe it’s just my crazed-mind working again. Benio acts like Akari’s sister on Yuru Yuri. I mean, not as dark and twisted as Akari’s sister, but…no, they’re both pretty depraved on their sister-love. Give Benio some credit. She has never worn her sister’s underwear over her head while spooning a body pillow with her sister on it. Also, have you seen Mayuru? She looks like Chitose from Yuru Yuri! Kobeni also has a bit of a resemblance to Akari. It can’t just be that they’re both animated by Doga Kobo studios. It just can’t!
Doga Kobo, thank God you guys are doing Oshi no Ko right now. Because I’ve been ready to judge you guys intensely after watching this.
OVAS: The first OVA has Kobeni and everyone else go to a hot spring. It’s 12 minutes long. Nothing affecting the plot happens here. The second OVA has Kobeni and Mashiro talk about their youth. It’s 12 minutes long. Nothing affecting the plot happens here...
Tumblr media
...Although Kobeni wanted to grow up to be a sexual deviant. We can blame Benio for that.
Tumblr media
ENDING: There were a lot of dilemmas going down with the characters. Hakuya was trying to think of a good White Day gift for Kobeni. Kobeni has been dealing with her feelings towards Hakuya and if she really likes him. The recent stuff with Konoha wanting to marry Hakuya has really gotten her. There was also a little guilt between the two potential love birds as Kobeni has seen a scar that Hakuya keeps hidden. He got it the day Kobeni got hurt as a child. Kobeni feels guilty that she caused this and Hakuya is just guilty over not being able to protect Kobeni in the first place.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, Benio has gotten a little more territorial with Kobeni (especially when Hakuya was around). And as for Mashiro, she decided to do some roof-hopping since it was dusk one day. But someone at her school (the school gossip of all people) might have caught a glimpse of her. Regular humans aren’t supposed to know of the mountain entities. This incident could have been the driving factor in both Hakuya and Mashiro disappearing at the end of episode 11. They’re gone. All their shit is gone too. Even the mother and sister are worried.
Tumblr media
Turns out Hakuya and Mashiro went back home for a bit. They took their clothes and books back to change out since a new session of school was starting soon. But it wasn’t found out until Kobeni made the trek up to the mountains in search of the brother and sister. And then falls ill with a fever! You know, all of this could have been prevented if Hakuya just left a note or text message. And not a cryptic message he left on Kobeni’s phone. This boy is seriously the winner of spaciest cadet in all of anime history.
Tumblr media
In her feverish haze, Kobeni ends up wandering off on her own while Mashiro and Hakuya were searching for items for her fever. This turn of events turned into an almost déjà vu moment as Kobeni almost ended up falling off a cliff. Hakuya saved her in time. The last time this happened, Kobeni was horribly injured and Hakuya gave her half of his own powers. After being saved, we do get this sweet scene between Hakuya and Kobeni. They don’t fully say “I love you” or anything like that. But they do want to be there for each other and not hide anything. Kobeni is safe. Everyone goes home.
My first impression of this show was that I was in for a moe anime where cute anime girls do cute things. I remember thinking that when I would see clips of the opening theme. Most of that opening is very misleading. But then I saw a male in the main cast and thought, “Shit, it’s a harem”. It was not. Although, there is no other romance to speak of with the rest of the cast. And then we add this supernatural crap of Hakuya and Mashiro being special entities that live in the mountains. I’m throwing up my hands and calling it a day. I was not expecting any of this and I am okay with that. What I got was better than what I was expecting. Keep in mind, I was not expecting much to begin with.
I think this is an okay story to watch if you’re looking for a short series to occupy your mind before you go onto bigger animes. It’s just that if you’re not a fan of precocious little girls with an attitude, you might have a disdain for one of the main characters. In my case, yeah, Mashiro did get on my nerves. But it was tolerable.
If you would like to watch Engaged to the Unidentified, Hidive has every episode available for streaming.

Eddie, My Love! eddie munson x reader // valentine's day special series Day 6 Prompt: Conversation Hearts 💕 ~ 2,300 words Eddie teases you because he thinks your crush on him is hilarious, but you don’t find it very funny.
Tumblr media
A tiny, hard, unidentified object thwacks! against the back of your head.
“Ow!” You spin on your heel to confront the culprit, and…are actually not that surprised to see Eddie Munson standing there, smirking at you.
You rub the back of your head. “What was that?”
Wordlessly, Eddie holds up a small pink box. Conversation hearts. Of course.
You turn back around and keep walking, staring determinedly ahead, but he matches your pace. He strolls next to you down the hallway, nonchalant as can be, like he doesn’t have some trick up his sleeve to pester you with. When his arm brushes against yours, you shift subtly away, not wanting to touch him.
Well, that’s not entirely accurate, now is it?
“Happy Valentine’s Day.”
“Happy Valentine’s Day,” you mumble back instinctively, the need to mind your manners overpowering your need to avoid engaging with Eddie Munson at any cost.
“So? Who’s the lucky fella taking you out tonight?”
There isn’t one. “None of your business.”
“Aw, come on, Princess. You gotta tell me who my competition is.”
Heat blooms in your cheeks. “That’s not funny.”
He pouts at you.
You abruptly veer off to the left and duck into the restroom; you don’t want to hear what he has to say next.
“Hey! Where ya going?”
You shut yourself into a stall and lean with your back against the door, eyes squeezed shut. Why couldn’t he just leave you be? Was it not enough for him to simply not reciprocate your feelings? He had to go out of his way to tease you about the stupid crush you have on him, too?
Used to have, you think bitterly to yourself, as though there wasn’t any lingering affection embedded deep into your heartstrings.
But it’s not that easy.
Eddie Munson was different. He was rowdy, snarky, and absurdly eloquent for a guy in his third go-round as a senior; he liked to read, he played guitar in a band, and he protected his friends like an attack dog. He worked at a bar and dragged on Lucky Strikes as he walked through the school parking lot, practically stomping across the pavement in his heavy boots.
But still, there was a softness hiding underneath that hard shell. You were sure of it.
Smitten kitten. That was you. Reaching your own senior year, you were finally, finally able to share a class with him. Ms. O’Donnell’s fourth period English became your favorite part of the day, the perfect place to indulge in your silly romantic fantasies, because the leading hero who starred in them was conveniently seated just two desks away.
Which was all fine and dandy for you, until he knew.
You still don’t know how he found out. Did Nancy Wheeler let something slip in front of her brother, Mike, who ran and snitched to his fearless club leader? Or did Eddie somehow glean it from you by sheer intuition?
It was little things at first. Cocky, arrogant smirks aimed directly at you when he came into the room and plopped down in his seat. Cheeky tugs at your hair in the hallway. He hissed your name across the library and pulled goofy faces when you turned to look, wagged his tongue and threw wadded-up balls of paper at you. These actions left you confused, and automatically put you on guard. What did they mean, and why did they start occurring so suddenly?
You weren’t left guessing for long. He quickly got bolder. Eddie was already behaving like a general menace, but then it went beyond the rude gestures and peskiness. He did the unthinkable; he started teasing you mercilessly about your pathetic infatuation.
He chased you in the hallways, calling you mocking pet names and asking when you were going to finally give him a chance. He blew kisses at you when you made eye contact in the cafeteria, pouting at you when you didn’t return them, while his friends all watched the exchange and laughed uproariously.
It was so humiliating you could cry, and you had, many times over. And to think you had liked him because he was supposed to be nice underneath that tough exterior.
You’d rather be on the receiving end of Jason Carver’s poisonous words, or even worse — a repeat of Tommy Hagan’s routine torture from the year prior would be preferable to this.
Having Eddie poke fun at your unrequited love for him was far too much to bear.
You sniffle uncontrollably, tears leaking out of the corners of your eyes. You wipe at them furiously with your sleeve, feeling hot with embarrassment. You wish you could hide in here forever, and you almost do — but the late bell rings, and — Goddamn it — you have a quiz. Heaving a shuddery sigh, you walk as quickly as you can without breaking into a sprint to Ms. O’Donnell’s room.
The ornery woman gives you a frown as you enter her class late; you keep your eyes glued to the floor as you scamper to your seat, pointedly ignoring the curious stares of your peers, who are no doubt wondering what’s got you in such a state. Certainly not meeting his gaze, which is trained on you. You can practically feel it.
Quiz papers are passed out, and you can scarcely focus on the questions. You skim and answer as quickly as you can, wanting nothing more than to put your head down and wait for class to end.
The period passes in a blur; you’ve spent most of it watching the clock, telepathically willing the red hand ticking the seconds by to move faster. As soon as the bell rings you’re out of your seat, throwing your bag over your shoulder and all but running from the room.
“Hey! Wait up!”
You ignore him, weaving in and out of the crowd of students.
He catches up with you anyway. “What’s wrong?” Eddie asks, for once sounding completely serious as he talks to you. “Why were you crying?”
Tears threaten to well up again. You purse your lips and shake your head as your face starts to crumble. God, you’re so over this whole thing. The teasing and the crying followed by more teasing, and more crying, an endless cycle that left you emotional and on edge every time you had to see him.
“Hey.” He tries to place a ringed hand on your shoulder, a touch that would have had you swooning mere months ago, but you wrench yourself out of his grip, face streaming.
~
Later at home, your parents are off to dinner, celebrating their own love story. You revel in the luxury of an empty house, taking a long, hot shower, and slipping on your softest pajamas. Ordering your favorite takeout and putting on a comfort movie has you feeling almost okay again; you’re determined that today will be the last day you let Eddie Munson get under your skin, ever.
There’s a rapping at the door. You hop up from the couch and grab the cash your parents set aside for your dinner, pad to the front door, and swing it open with a polite smile plastered on your face.
Except the person standing there is decidedly not a delivery boy with an armful of food, but one Eddie Munson.
Immediately, you try to slam the door shut, but Eddie sticks his foot out before it can close all the way. He yelps in pain as the heavy door squashes his Reebok, but he doesn’t move.
“Oh my God! Is it not enough for you to bully me at school? Now you have to come to my house?! How do you even know where I live?!”
“Wheeler told me your address!” His eyes are wide, alarmed by the ferocity of your reaction. Wincing, he asks, “Can you just talk to me for a second, please? I’m trying to check on you.”
Reluctantly, you ease the pressure you’re putting on his foot. You keep the door half-shut, peering at him from around the jamb. You say nothing, waiting suspiciously.
When it seems to Eddie that you’re not going to deck him, he relaxes a little. “I just wanted to apologize,” he admits, sounding as bashful as Eddie probably ever could. “I guess I upset you earlier today, and I didn’t mean to.” He pauses. “That was because of me, right?”
You sigh. “The fact that you even have to ask…”
His cheeks turn pink, and shuffles his feet nervously. “Look, I’m really sorry. For buggin’ you all the time. I guess…it’s some kind of…wish fulfillment thing for me, or whatever — anyway, it’s stupid, and I’m sorry for doing that to you. I swear I didn’t realize that it upset you so much, otherwise I never would’ve kept doing it.”
Eddie’s grimacing in shame, eyes downcast. He does look awfully sorry, but you’re not quite ready to forgive.
“I just don’t understand why.” Your bottom lip starts to tremble. “You know, you spend so much time fighting the basketball team, or anybody that so much as looks the wrong way at your Hellfire friends. You know what it’s like to get picked on. How could you do that to me? Even for a second?”
Eddie opens his mouth to interject, but you press on.
“If you thought it was funny that I liked you, then fine. You don’t have to like me back. But you don’t need to laugh in my face about it, either.”
He blinks. “I — what?”
“That’s so fucking mean, Eddie, for you to taunt me every single day —”
“You liked me?”
“Don’t play dumb,” you snap back.
“Princess, if you liked me, this is the first I’m hearing about it. I was under the impression that you hated my guts.”
Both of you fall silent, staring at each other intensely. Eddie’s brow is deeply furrowed, full lips parted in wonder.
You falter uncertainly. “I’m…confused.”
His face is a mirror of your own bewilderment. “So am I. You thought I was teasing you…for having a crush on me?”
You suddenly feel very exposed, like someone just walked in on you naked. “Weren’t you?”
“No.”
The words hangs in the air between you for a moment.
“Well, I definitely don’t anymore,” you state defensively, crossing your arms over your chest.
“Why did you think that?”
“Because you never looked twice at me and then all of a sudden you — you started calling me Princess and blew me kisses and talked about us going on dates like it was the funniest joke in the world!”
“Did it ever occur to you,” he replies, uncharacteristically quiet, “that I did all those things because I liked you?”
There’s an odd swooping sensation, like stepping for a missing stair.
A small smile pulls at the corners of his mouth, though his big doe-eyes still have a tinge of sadness in them. “I — I thought,” he wavers, then tries again, “I kept asking when you would go out with me because I really want you to. Go out with me, I mean.”
“Wish fulfillment,” you mumble, echoing his phrasing from earlier.
“I thought we were playing some kind of game, I guess. I thought you knew the meaning behind it, when I would do all those things. I had no idea I was hurting your feelings. And believe me, I had no clue that you had a crush on me — you’re way out of my league, Princess. I thought I was fighting a losing battle, so I kept hamming it up.”
You’re completely dumbfounded. “You threw papers at me. And pencils. And dice.”
Eddie chuckles nervously, thoroughly embarrassed. “Forgive me. I’ve been held back twice; that’s not really an indicator of a mature brain, is it?” He shrugs. “I wanted you to pay attention to me.”
All the emotional turmoil of the day hits you like a tidal wave. Impossibly, you find yourself getting choked up yet again. “All this time, I thought you were laughing at me.”
“I wasn’t,” he says softly, taking a step towards you. “I swear on my life, I never meant to make you feel this way. God, sweetheart, if I’d have known…” His gaze lingers on your watery eyes, your trembling lips, the way you’re almost hiding from him behind the jamb. “I’m so sorry. I don’t know how I didn’t see it.”
You swallow harshly. “It’s my own fault, I think. I always jump to conclusions — everyone tells me all the time that I’m too sensitive.”
“You’re not too sensitive,” he reassures you. “You’re sweet, you know? Gentle. That’s all.”
Oh. Eddie Munson thinks you’re gentle.
He cocks his head to the side. “Did it ever even occur to you? That I might have a crush on you, too?”
You laugh in spite of yourself, wiping at a few stray tears. “No.”
“Well, it should have. ‘Cause I did then, and I do right now, too.”
Eddie slips something out of his pocket, the tip of his tongue poking out of his mouth. He holds out the same box he had earlier: small and pink, still full of pastel candies rattling against the cardboard. He pulls the flap open and shakes a few out into his palm; after looking over his options, he selects a lilac-colored heart and holds it out so you can see the small text. It simply reads: FOR YOU.
“A small token of my affection,” he whispers. “If you want it.”
Without thinking you reach out and grasp his leather-clad forearm, tugging on his sleeve. “Come inside,” you whisper back, suddenly overwhelmed by the need to have him close and warm. “Please.”
“Are you sure?”
“Yes. Definitely.”
Eddie bows his head. “Whatever you want, Princess.”
He finally crosses the threshold and steps into your arms, swinging the door shut behind him.

Mashiro Mitsumine
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Age: 9
Home: Unnamed mountain village (Engaged to the Unidentified)
Blood type: DEA
Likes: Mild curry, sweets, family, cryptids
Dislikes: Sundays, Benio, sticky food, UFOs
Good things in this anime: 1
Mashiro is one of the kids I added without anyone submitting them, for personal reasons.
This one chess YouTuber I watch has a clip of Mashiro dancing in his outro, and I decided to investigate. Mashiro is pretty adorable dancing, the premise sounded…potentially worth watching, so I gave it a shot. It was not good, but Mashiro was adorable as advertised. Shame that the central couple is two cardboard cutouts, there's no plot beyond watching them fall in “love,” and Benio exists.
Anyways. Mashiro Mitsumine.
Mashiro is one of those kids who wants to act like they're mature grown-ups. Thanks to hypnosis(?), Mashiro even attends a high school. (…where she gets bad grades, because unlike some of the 9-year-olds in this bracket, she doesn't have seven doctorates.) In reality, she's a normal kid; she barges into her big brother's room all the time, is easily bribed with sweets, is terrified of things that probably don't exist, etc.
Mashiro isn't super generic, but she's also far from the most unique kid in the bracket. But she is a good execution of her type of kid. She has a good seiyuu, her animators draw out her cuteness, and she has a lot of it, because of her cute character design. I'm especially fond of her in her obviously oversized high school uniform—it both symbolizes her shoddy attempts at seeming mature and has these big sleeves that fall over her hands and flap all around when Mashiro flails. Which happens a lot at school, mostly because of Benio. Ugh.
Anyways, what does Tumblr have to say about Mashiro? Not much, it's mostly gifs; I'll show you a few of those.

BEEP
First night in a shared apartment with Lando. All is idyllic - until there is an unidentifiable alarm sound, which brings out insecurities buried safely inside under normal circumstances.
fluff, anxiety vibes, one shot
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Y/N was a baths type of person. In fact, Lando suspected her being a part-time mermaid. Always in a body of water, if possible. For hours and hours. Many times he had come to her home only to find her sitting in a bathtub of then already cold water on her "home office" hours, with a laptop on her precisely curated set up. He would come to her, chat a little and playfully splash some water into her face, before having her drain the tub and joining her after another set of hot water was in it. Even after that, he could only last about 20 minutes before getting uncomfortable.
He was glad water bills were not life or death for him when they moved together to their first official shared apartment in Monaco. Making it their own was her priority, so a bathtub was an absolute must. Pool nearby as well.
As far as moving houses goes, this was a hectic one. Lando's schedule making it hard for him to participate, so she had to organize it all with the help of movers. Cleaning out two apartments into one. She was few years younger than him and this was the first time she had actually moved on her own, making it a classic test of adulthood. There were few pseudo panic attacks involved during the process. However, the feeling of accomplishment? Being able to prove to herself that she can do it alone was something nobody could ever take from her. Another level of adulthood conquered. But she didn't want Lando to know about this little insecurity of hers - with him having to grow up faster than most of his peers, she sometimes felt like she was lacking behind. Though Lando never made any comment about that, in fact this did not cross his mind at all, until their first proper evening together in their new apartment.
Lando was excited for that evening, but he was proper tired. Physically and mentally drained. Few weeks of constant travel and racing drama had him totally off.
She managed to get most of things ready for his arrival. They hit the bubbly bathtub immediately upon him coming home. Lando was smitten. Coming home, it felt really refreshing after months of "your place or mine?".
It was raw, both of them naked facing each other in the tub, legs entangled, their bodies touching at multiple places. Hot steam coming out of the water filled the room, curling Lando's hair more that usually and the scent of her latest favorite vanilla bath salt gave into the relaxing atmosphere. They casually caressed each other, engaging in a light simple conversation, carefree and intimate.
All of that went out of the window when there was an excruciatingly loud and sharp beep alarm noise suddenly out nowhere.
BEEP
Y/N eyes went wide. Lando knew that look all too well by then. Pure panic. He knew there were few moments he had to stop her spiraling.
"What was that? Did you hear it?" she asked, boring her eyes in his for answers he did not have.
He smiled and tried to pass on some relaxing energy onto her. "Yes, I did...Calm down, it's probably nothing."
"Probably?! How can you be sure?"
Lando reached for her hand. "I'm sure. All is good and fine, let's not get bothered by anything. I missed you so much," he said truthfully. She was what he wanted to focus on. Not some nonsense sounds.
She eased a bit, her fingers still feeling tense in his hands. "I miss you everytime."
"Oh, so it's a competition now?" he smirked, happy he got her distracted.
BEEP
The two stared at each other in silence for few moments.
"Honey, ignore it," he said trying to sound more demanding than a plea.
Y/N took a deep breath in. "I am ignoring it."
"I can see that, clearly," he said sarcastically. "Tell me about your week instead. Were the movers ok? Did they do a good job?"
"Well, we're sitting here and we have a bed to sleep in, so I'd say it was a success," he replied dryly.
"You're my little nervous peach, aren't you?" he said, leaning closer to her so that he could caress her face. Oh boy, was he drowning in love with this strange human sitting across him.
She let go of her pout. "Yes...But, you're the one to talk! You always get nervous before a car upgrade."
He was truly fascinated how she was unapologetically able to compare new McLaren upgrades with a random beep sound. He'd already made a mental check of the things that could have been making that sound and figured all the important alarms made a completely different sound. For a moment, he imagined his girlfriend sitting in a formula 1 car going over 200 km/h, freaking out in the style only she knew how. He'd never admit this to her, but he found her "freaking out" face irresistible.
He calculated his response. "It's perfectly fine to get nervous. But trust me, this in nothing."
BEEP
Her question was almost immediate. "What if it's the gas. What if we have a gas leak. A guy came here to do an inspection yesterday, what if he didn't close the vent or whatever?"
"Honey, the gas is not even on now..." he looked at her perplexed.
She was unstoppable at this point. "I don't know that! I don't understand these things! It's all gas heater there, air conditioning here, water boiler this and insurance that. Did you know we need to have a property insurance for the lease?"
"Yes, I knew that." He was not sure how to keep responding at that point. The last thing he wanted was to make her spiral more.
"Well, I didn't! Felt like an absolute idiot talking to the guy, I thought these things were part of leases."
Lando squeezed her hand. "It's fine. Once we get out of the tub, we'll go and search for the sound. Hey, maybe it has already stopped."
She was staring at him, waiting for her cue, expecting a beep sound any moment now. He returned her look, challenging her, making a battle of who was right. And the sound? Suddenly, not even a little ding.
"See?" he said, really hoping it was not going to come as he finished.
Tension was high in the bathroom, making it the opposite of relaxing. Yet still, there was no place other than these two would rather be. Well, Y/N would rather be at the source of the forsaken beeping, but, that was not happening now.
"Ok. Maybe you're right," she said, visibly tired as well.
"We'll get out of this bath in few mins, have dinner in the bed, watch some nonsense and go to sleep, ok? I need your cuddles, desperately," he said softly and leaned to kiss her.
BEEP
"Oh my god, what is that???" she screamed in utmost annoyance.
"Honestly, it sounds like it's coming from outside the house," he observed - and she was not having it anymore.
She gave him a sassy smile. "So, what. Is it the apocalypse now?"
"It's not the apocalypse."
Flustered wave hit her face, having her melt down completely. "Why would someone install an alarm somewhere and have it beeping for no apparent reason? People don't do that."
"I don't know, my love..."
"That's ok, but I should know! I took over the apartment from the realtor - I should have asked!"
"And what would the question be? What are the things that could beep?"
She threw her arms out, splashing water everywhere and not even noticing it. "I don't know! That's the thing! I just don't know. And I don't have a single idea where people find these out. How come everyone around always seems to know and I'm here just sitting, vibing and hoping we're not going to burn the house down."
"Y/N? What's this about?" he asked, concerned. Was she ok? Was there something he'd missed?
She was on a roll, words just flowing out of her mouth, the way only speaking to Lando made her do. "I just feel so out of place some times. I'm doing all these adult things, far away from family and from you as well. And I want to be able to do it, I want to be a good adult. But I just don't know."
He tried to hold her hand once again, but she was busy having her arms crossed around her chest. "You're still young, this is growing up. I also don't know yet, many times..."
"I don't want to be your burden, I want to be your support."
"You are my support, what are you on about?"
"I was suppose to be in charge of the whole moving thing. And here we are and I can't even tell you what's beeping."
BEEP
"My god! Can it just stop! Please!"
Lando was still thinking about what she said previously. The familiar feeling she described.
"You did a great job with the move, by the way. Honestly. It would not happen without you. I wish I could be here more," he spoke slowly, hoping she would subconsciously join in his tune.
She sighed. Might as well get everything out now. "I love you, you know that. But it gets lonely sometimes. And there is no end of your nomadic lifestyle in sight. And what if you get bored of me once you stop traveling? We've never spent a month without a break together. What if when you're older, you decide I'm actually pretty boring and you leave me for someone younger. And I'll be old, pass my best years and alone once again."
She stopped, surprised a little bit by the words that came out of her. Now that it was out, it was impossible to ignore.
Lando was hyper focused now. Every word a calculated decision. This was no longer a chill chat.
BEEP
"Y/N. I love you too. And I love you the way you are and I can't imagine loving anyone else. I'm also excited for the older version of you to come one day, to accompany my older self that I have yet to meet. I want to be with you. My job is making this harder, but I hope this will not be an obstacle for you."
The last thing she wanted was to make him feel guilty. She got mad at herself for tangling things up together so much that it stopped making sense to her. "Of course not. I love your passion and the fact you dream big. Sorry, this got a little out of hand."
"No, I'm glad you're finally phrasing your worries. Is there anything more?" Lando was keen on continuing this impromptu chat.
"What if we grow apart? People change all the time. What if we stop wanting each other? How long can love last?"
He smiled. "For me it's impossible to imagine it now. I can only speak for my present self. But what you described it the last thing I'd ever want to happen."
Y/N took a deep breath once again. "Do you want children? Because I don't know yet. Yet, unlike you, I don't have the luxury of decades to decide. My time is slowly running up. And here I am, not even sure if want them?"
"Honey, plenty if time for that. I'm sure I do not want children in the next two years anyway. It must be real fun in your head sometimes - in one sentence you're too young to know adult stuff and in other you're too old for having children?"
She finally laughed. "Yeah. It is confusing sometimes."
"I hope you don't get offended, but you look absolutely gorgeous when you're flustered. Don't be too hard on yourself, please."
"I'll remind you of that when you're on your typical self-hate trip after a bad race."
"Touché." Got him there.
"Shall we get out of the bath? Would you mind searching with me for the alarm?"
"With you I'll be happy to do absolutely anything."
He got out and reached a hand for her when she was getting up, almost as a metaphor for her current state. They helped each other dry out, put on new matching bathrobes that Lando brought as a gift and searched the whole apartment for anything that could or would beep. There were few more beeps coming their way before they suddenly stopped. The two figured it really was coming somewhere from outside. Once Y/N was finally convinced they checked everything, she agreed on getting to bed and cuddle. Lando offered going out to get her ear buds for sleeping, but by that time it had already stopped.
They never found the source of the beeping. But, that's ok. Sometimes things just make unexpected noise and it's fine.
