you had me at ‘I loathe you’ ||  A Professor AU
Professor Joe al-Kaysani has been trying to get a grant for a research project for years. Enter the young habilitation candidate and new lecturer who snatches the money away from him on his first day at work. It's the beginning of something great, even if it doesn't look like it and takes all of Quynh's matchmaking powers.
a first meeting in 3 parts.
Chapter One
‘Why are board meetings always at lunch time?’ Joe fell back into the chair, pulled the plate with nibbles and snacks closer to himself to secure some biscuits and stuffed them into the pockets of his jacket before biting down on a chocolate one, ‘I’m starving.’
‘Because we’re teaching the rest of the day,’ Andy sat down at the head of the table and thumbed through the stack of papers she had carried under her arms, ‘and you are the one who needs to get back to class earlier than others so stop whining.’
‘Thanks for reminding me, boss,’ he grinned and crossed his arms behind his head, ‘what is on the agenda today?’
‘Not too much, don’t worry, only the new colleague in the English department and the annual grants for the faculty and department projects. Did you hand in your application for the redesigned Renaissance architecture project this year?’
‘You know well enough I did, Ms chairperson-of-the-finance-committee,’ Joe greeted a group of other colleagues coming into the assembly room with a wave and a grin, ‘come on, Andy, please tell me I can do it this time. It’s the third time I’ve applied for the grant, the art faculty really needs the boost this year, we have enough enrolments to compete with the classics and history for once, there is no reason why I shouldn’t be allowed to get my project funded for the art department.’

TOG fandom - How to address others in Italian (a little help for fellow writers)
Another one of these posts in quick succession because a thing I’ve noticed in many, many fanfiction is the incorrect use of titles and honorifics in Nicky’s Italian lines. Which... I get it, it’s super-uper difficult to get and also Google is the worst of all to translate the right use and nuance (my suggestion is to always prefer Reverso Context when translating entire phrases, it’s based on examples and it’s more accurate in general). So!
Let’s start with family (famiglia, with a gl, different to the Spanish word).
Papà = dad (please, please, PLEASE USE THE ACCENT. Just like Nicolo ≠ Nicolò, remember that Papa = Pope. And Nicky’s dad - or Nicky as a dad - is not a Pope). Variants! They are mostly regionals, but you can also use: papi, babbo, pa’. Father = padre, so if Nicky has to refer to an austere father figure or someone else’s father? Use padre and the honorific form (we will get to that). Mamma = mom. Variants! Mami, mammà, ma’. Mother = madre. Figlio/a = son/daughter. Sorella = sister. Older sister = sorella maggiore or sorellona (like ‘big sis’), younger sister = sorella minore or sorellina (’lil sis’). Fratello = brother. Older brother = fratello maggiore or fratellone (’big bro’), younger brother = fratello minore or fratellino (’lil bro’). Nonno/a = grandad/grandma. Also: nonnino/nonnina, it’s cute. Zio/a = uncle/aunt. Cute: zietto/zietta. Cugino/a = cousin. Younger cousins could also be called: cuginetto/cuginetta. Nipote = nephew/niece and grandson/granddaughter. Younger ones: nipotino/nipotina. Suocero/a = father-in-law/mother-in-law. Cognato/a = brother-in-law/sister-in-law. Genero = son-in-law. Nuora = daughter-in-law. ... and I’m stopping here, but if you have questions on other particular words just DM me :D
How to address loved ones.
Amico/a = friend. Someone who’s always very friendly and nice to hang up with = amicone/a. The BFF from when you were young kids = amichetto/a. Ragazzo/a = boyfriend/girlfriend. ‘Chi è? Il tuo ragazzo?’ = ‘Who’s that? Your boyfriend?’. Variants (also regionals): ragazzino/a, moroso/a, tipo/a. Fidanzato/a = fiancée. Could also be used as boy/girlfriend, but it’s mostly for couples about to get married. However, nonne all over Italy at Christmas would always ask their nephews/nieces ‘ce l’hai il/la fidanzatino/a?’ which basically is ‘have you found yourself a boy/girlfriend?’. Marito/moglie = husband/wife.
How to address royalty/nobility (to the person who asked about this specifically some time ago: took me some time, but here it is).
Sua/Vostra altezza reale/imperiale = His/Her/Your royal/imperial highness Sua/Vostra maestà reale = His/Her/Your royal majesty Re/Regina = King/Queen Imperatore/Imperatrice = Emperor/Empress Principe/Principessa = Prince/Princess Duca/Duchessa = Duke/Duchess Conte/Contessa = Count/Countess Signore/Signora = Lord/Lady (’mio Signore’ = my Lord)
The clergy (a relevant topic for Nicolò).
Prete = priest. Also: don (mostly used before the name to address the priest, like ‘Don Nicolò’)(yeah I know it reminds you of mafia names, that’s where they get it from... it’s basically a substitute of ‘signore’, frequently used in the South). You can also call the priest padre (father) ‘Padre Nicolò’. Padre superiore = father superior, frate = friar, monaco = monk, eremita = hermit, abate = abbott. To address a friar: fra and the name, like ‘Fra Giacomo’. Suora = nun. To address the nun: suor and the name, like ‘Suor Cristina’. Also: sorella, madre superiora = mother superior (’Madre Teresa’), badessa = abbess. Vescovo = bishop. ‘Sua Eccellenza’ = His Excellency. Arcivescovo = archbishop. ‘Sua Grazia’ = His Grace. Cardinale = cardinal. ‘Sua Eminenza’ = His Eminence. Papa = Pope. POPE. P-O-P-E as in the old holy guy dressed in white living in Vaticano. First rule of Italian, folks: we don’t have as many accents as the French, but when we do THEY MUST BE USED. Also: Santo Padre = Holy Father. ‘Sua Santità’ = His Holiness. I had to translate half ‘Wikihow - come rivolgersi al clero cattolico’ LOL
There should probably be a whole chapter about politics too, but you get the drift: use Reverso, check the examples and write me (or any other Italian user in the TOG fandom) a DM if you’re in doubt.
And we arrive straight to the honorific form. This is hard, I know... English doesn’t really have this form, but it’s extremely important to know it and know the differences to write/talk good Italian.
The basic rule is that when we speak to someone who’s above us in hierarchy (a client, a professor, an older colleague, ecc.) or a stranger, we use ‘lei’. Dare del lei means not referring to the person with the singular form of ‘you’ = tu, but use the female third person singular. Let’s proceed with an example: if you’re writing Nicky as a professor, he’s gonna be called ‘prof Di Genova’ by his Italian students. They wouldn’t say ‘prof, non interrogarmi’ to him, but they would use the ‘lei’ form: ‘prof, non mi interroghi’ (don’t test/question me, professor). This form is basically the most frequently translated by Google. This is why the most frequent mistake in fanfiction is Nicky asking ‘scusi?’ (sorry, in the ’lei’ form) to Joe or Andy or Booker instead of ‘scusa?’. As much as I think Nicky is a very polite guy and he definitely would use the ‘lei’ form with strangers, he knows his family (and his husband!) well enough to use the ‘you’. As a rule, always check if the translated Italian you are using is in the honorific form and, if it shouldn’t be in your fic (as in: Nicky is talking to someone he knows, like Nile or Joe or his family), change it to the ‘you’ form. NB! Nice nuance in fanfiction: Nicky using the ‘lei’ form with Copley or even Merrick (sometimes using the honorific form with asshole strangers adds a very sassy flavour) and Nicky using the ‘lei’ form with Joe if you’re writing a first meeting AU (in a polite/formal environment). It’s cute because there’s frequently a moment during a first meeting conversation where people ask each other: ‘possiamo darci del tu?’ (can we use the ‘you’ form?) and I think it’d work well with them.
You think this is it? THINK AGAIN! We also have an even more reverential form, to use with very veeery important people (nobility, extremely high-up people and the such) which is dare del voi. Voi = you (second person plural). The ‘vostra’ you saw above in the royalty part comes from this. Example: if Nicky is a prince or a king, a counselor should address him with the ‘voi’ form. ‘Vostra maestà, vogliate scusarmi: ho dimenticato di aggiornarvi su questo argomento’ (Your Majesty, please excuse me: I’ve forgotten to give you updates on this topic).
A bit complicated, I know, but I hope I’ve helped. Remember you can DM me anytime if you have questions. If you think I’ve forgotten something, please add a comment so that I can reply! :D

So far in my Sense8 au: This is a gay only event (working title)
there's a cut because i got slightly carried away
Andy: Kazakhstan. Has learned the way of the blade and horse riding. She’s the big brain of it all, always have a plan. She fears nothing because once a pissed off horse ran over her and she got out with nothing. She has every gods by her side and she’s the most powerful of them. Her husband Achilles left her because he was sick and didn’t want to die with her watching him, that fucked her up a good deal, ngl. Tired tm even tho she’s the same age as the other.
Quynh: Vietnam. A certified prankster and the asshole everyone love because she’s compelling like that. Knows a martial art like Sun, but she has no qualm about gloating about it, because she’s good and the world deserve to know. Big pressure from her family to not show her sexuality and take after the company when all she wants is to be free and herself, kicking ass while looking good because she knows fashion. Will join Andy and they will live happily ever after as wives after years of yearning and chasing each other without putting too much intent because they’re not sure the other wants that. Peak lesbian representation. Quynh makes the first move because she’s tired of waiting. Will become an insta influencer only because Veronica Ngo’s ig kills me every time she posts.
Lykon; Kenya. The optimist, always seeing the bright side and cheering on other. A good sport that never let anything bring him down and is so resilient. It’s impressive how many time he gets up from awful stuff. Insanely good with numbers and science stuff, big fan of cinema too. There’s literally no info on Lykon in canon, so I’m inclined to give him Capheus’s nationality.
Yusuf: Tunisia, like Marwan. He’s the artist, was almost an actor but realized he liked painting more. He’s now an art professor in a college and has a somewhat successful career as an artist but he’s more interested in historical painting and trying old techniques for his researches than selling his artwork. Sometime does reconstruction of old paintings. The incurable romantic, the heart of the team, always see straight (lol) and try to do good. Very supportive and loving family that are behind him, but he won’t talk about the sensate thing because he doesn’t want to bring them any trouble.
Nicolo: Italy. A priest, will have a big surprise with Yusuf when all his suppressed gay will surge out of the closet he forgot he made in his head. Will get in an argument with Yusuf about art and religion and that’ll become their way of flirting for about a year. The other sensate will have random bit of arguing and obscure middle age  and renaissance knowledge sprung upon them at random time. Andy will get pissed first and have a mental sit down with them, telling them to have those arguments face to face and not in their brains. Nicolo goes to Tunis and fuck he doesn’t hate the guy, he loves him. Oops. He’s the moral of the team and can convince anyone of anything and manipulate anyone. Also really good at guilt tripping bad guys, that's Catholicism for you.
Booker: France. Forger, went to prison. Kinda like Wolfgang, but sadder and drunker and a widow too. Or maybe divorced but he talks about his wife like she died, making it 10x funnier, not sure what I want for him yet. Has sort of given up on life at this point, will refuse the cluster until he realize it’s a good thing. Will try to get better to not inconvenience the other with his shitty thoughts. Get along with Andy real good, and now Joe always has a buddy to watch the football match with, so it’s nice. First interaction with Nicky: a rediffusion of the ‘06 world cup final. It goes well (no it doesn’t). First interaction with Quynh: she’s in his home and call him out (damn bitch, you live like this?).
Nile: USA. She was a marine because of her father, shot on service and left with a honorable discharge. She works as a body guard in small gig to have money for college, she’s good at most practical skill anyone can have. Really close with her family, her mom will believe her and help her (kinda like Amanita’s mom in the show). Will get into college for her art history degree and will manage to have professor Al-Kaysani make a couple lectures there and every prof in her school will love her immensely because that guys is famous world wide for his work, how did you get him to come here? He’ll help her with her PhD and doctorate, she introduces him to Vine. It’s a fair exchange in his eyes.
Copley: England. Born in the USA but really an English man through and through. The Hacker, hacktivist like Nomi. Was CIA, leaked info on illegal us business and is now on their watch list, trying to take him out. Snowden and Micro from netflix’s punisher mixed if you will. Wife died of ASL; him, Andy and Booker have a monthly widowed club in their heads where they drink and talk about their deceased partners (if divorced!booker, he’s an honorary member but miserable enough so they let him in). It’s very sad and none of the other are allowed. After a few month it becomes: the most responsible of the cluster (again, honorary booker only) having a drink together and talking shit about the latest drama in the cluster. Immensely and perpetually tired of the collective lack of brain cells from the cluster, he’s the only one who has his geolocation off on his phone. Even Nile forgets it sometimes. Will become the “let me unplug your router to fix the problem” assigned person of the group.
.
Plot: So far, it’s found family shenanigans, getting together and the human connection of it all. Maybe with a side dish of Merrick bad guy if I feel like it needs angst (or a plot). Also, they’re around 27/28yo here, they’ve lived a bit already.
.
At first I thought: I’ll just use the series sensates and change the names but like, it really doesn’t fit. So they’re just another cluster, different from the 8/8 cluster. Also added Copley in the immortal gang because he now has an honorary positon in the team in canon so why not? It’s sense8, nor sense7.
And no cop, only reformed gouvernement employee who hates their old jobs because we’re not bootlickers in this house.

surveys by seachaange
What do you do when someone is talking to you about something you don't care about? I listen and try to ask questions or add my own input so that they can see that even though I personally don’t care about the thing they’re talking about, I’m invested in them.
What is the best pizza place in your neighbourhood? Erm, we don’t really have a lot of independent pizza joints, actually. Most of the ones I see are chain restaurants like Pizza Hut and Domino’s. The best pizza I’ve had is from Vu’s at Marco Polo, but it’s been a whileeeee since I’ve had their food. Mama Lou’s pizza is also good.
Do you have Photoshop installed on your computer? I do but I only had it installed for school. I have no personal interest to learn it.
Are there any teachers you have that you are close with? I wouldn’t say that. I’m kinda chummy with one of my English teachers from high school - like he knew about me and Gab and supported us, I show my support for his art, we greet each other every now and then, etc - but we’re not ‘close.’
Do you have friends that play field hockey? No.
What about soccer? Not friends but I do know a number people who play football, yeah.
Do you think homosexuals are leading a bad lifestyle? This question aged like milk, didn’t it...
What do you think of the iPad? I remember when it blew up like crazy. It was such a revolutionary thing back when it was new, so much so that my dad even felt the need to buy one. It was fun when the hype lasted; but nowadays I don’t know people who would still seek out an iPad other than artists and law/med students, lmfao.
Do you put lotion on after you get out of the shower? I don’t.
Do you have any concerts on dvd? A lot, but they’re of concerts from a time when DVDs were still a thing. I haven’t had a new DVD in around 7-8 years.
Do you still have a VHS player? I think my parents have thrown theirs out already.
Has anyone ever given you a promise ring? No.
Do you send postcards to people when you go on vacation? I don’t. But aw, this made me remember when Jo did a summer exchange program in London and she sent postcards to Aya in the few months that she had been away. I thought that was sweet.
What do you think is the most comfortable shoe? Out of the pairs I have, my Onitsuka Tiger shoes for sure.
Have you seen Lady Gaga's music video for Telephone? That was suuuuuuch a big deal when it came out. Yes, I definitely have and I must’ve watched it a thousand times. Also rude, Beyoncé was in there too lol
If so, what do you think of it? It was so creative and a lot of fun to watch, especially for 2009 when artists weren’t exactly daring with music video concepts yet. I can’t believe they never collaborated again since.
What do you think of the septum piercing? It’s great.
Do you frequently skip class? Depends on my interest in the class/the professor, OR how tired I am that week. I skipped my psychology elective a lot because I didn’t think the instructor was all that great; and as much as I loved every single one of my history classes, there were a few sessions I voluntarily had to skip because I wasn’t doing mentally well. It really depends.
--
When you're really thirsty, what do you enjoy drinking most? Water. Anything else wouldn’t be able to quench my thirst as well.
What do you find inspirational in the world? I think it differs based on what I need to see at a given time, I guess. At this point in my life, I like hearing from people who have risen from their trust and abandonment issues, because it’s what I’ve been going through as well. I probably never would’ve found something like that inspirational, say, 6 months ago, so it really depends.
When hanging out with your bf or gf, what do you like doing most? I’m a very ‘let’s spend time in silence’ type of person. I cherished it the most when my ex and I would go to a coffee shop and work for hours, in complete and comfortable silence; or when I would be driving and no words would be exchanged for nearly the entire ride. Even though I stay quiet, in those moments I’m actually very happy. Of course new experiences are great too, but I personally enjoy the conventional ‘boring’ stuff the most when with a partner.
What do/did you think of your high school? Teeming with homophobia, bigotry, and just your typical Catholic gatekeepy judgmental environment. I look back at high school fondly because of the friends I made, not because of the toxic environment they nurtured in there.
What is the dirtiest rap song you have ever heard? I don’t listen to a lot of rap. But as an 11 year old listening to Nicki Minaj’s Itty Bitty Piggy, I was immediately traumatized lmao. I still can’t listen to that song.
What about a dirty song in any other genre? Uhhhhhhhhh probably Drunk in Love?? Lmaoooo I’d die for Beyoncé a million times but I always skip that song. My asexual ass just can’t deal.
What is a genre of music you simply can't stand? One of them is techno.
What is, in your opinion, the best way of dealing with a break up? Being kind to yourself.
What flavour of Doritos do you like best? I’ve only ever tried the nacho cheese flavor, but I love that one.
Where do you do your grocery shopping? I don’t do the grocery shopping in the family but my parents usually do it at SM or at this local store we have nearby.
Would you ever go to a comedy club? Yes, with a friend so I’d be more comfortable.
Do you think Victoria's Secret is overpriced? I haven’t been in one of their stores in a while, so I can’t really say.
Do you still have a VHS player? Again, I don’t think so.
Do you have a tumblr? :))))))
Why is it that photography is becoming a trend? So this survey was made in 2010 and I can definitely confirm it was a crazy huge trend lol. Even I got into it and asked my parents to get me a DSLR back then. Anyway, I think it was because during this time, DSLRs had been slowly becoming a thing? and they were kiiiiiiiinda cheap - at least cheap enough to be accessible to a large amount of people - so it allowed people to play with different styles that were very unfamiliar at the time, like light painting, fisheye, close-ups, etc. And then at one point everyone had DSLRs and it just wasn’t as enjoyable anymore because everyone was doing the same kinds of trendy shots lol.
What is the funniest movie you have ever seen? I’m gonna go with The Proposal - Sandra Bullock was gold in that movie.
Did you watch American Idol this past season? No. Do they still air new seasons of that?? I stopped watching when the same guitar-playing, country-singing white men kept winning.
If so, how did you feel about the winner? It’s been more than a decade since I last cared for the show.
Don't you hate it when one of your earbuds stops working? Sure.
Do you have a normal landline, or do you use MagicJack? Holy shit I have not heard of MagicJack in a goddamn WHILE lmao, what a throwback. We had one, I’m pretty sure...but I never knew what it was for.
Do you even use a house phone anymore? Landlines are still common in the Philippines. Are they not in other countries? Hahahaha.
Would you ever consider dating someone who lived across the country? If I loved, trusted, and was committed to them enough, yes.
What was the most expensive restaurant you've ever eaten at? I wasn’t able to track the name but I’m pretty sure it was the fine dining restaurant in our cruise trip that my parents treated me to for my birthday.
Do/did you take foods classes in high school? My school didn’t offer such a class, but we had home economics and we were occasionally taught how to cook and bake certain dishes.
Do you have a tattoo? No, not yet.
If you do, describe the pain you went thru when getting it done. Eugh this is what I’m scared of :((((
Do you enjoy making hemp necklaces and bracelets? I’ve never tried.
Have you ever watched the show Strangers With Candy? I’ve never even heard of it before, I’m sure.
What is your favourite bookstore? Fully Booked, because their collection is expansive, always complete, and they let you take a book of the shelves and read it if you’d like.
Have you ever used torrents? Mostly throughout high school. I did use a torrent to download Midsommar recently, though.
How can we tell if you are in a bad mood? I go quiet.
How are you when you're in a really good mood? Complete opposite - I will be bubbly and chatty, especially in instances when I’m not really expected to be.
Are you nice to everyone, even people you don't like? Yes.
When you're bored in class, what do you do? I seldom found myself bored in class because I’m constantly furiously taking notes. But if the prof themselves are very boring and there’s nothing to take notes about, I go ahead and check my social media either from my phone or laptop.
--
Would you rather go to Lollapalooza, Warped Tour, or Bonnaroo? As a teenager, I had always wanted to go to Warped Tour. As I’ve gotten older, though, the lineups for Lollapalooza have appealed to me more. Plus it’s in Chicago, soooooo a million more brownie points for that.
Do you have anything that is autographed? By who? Yeah, I have an autographed poster of AJ Lee. It was my most prized possession and I even placed it on a big picture frame and had it up on my wall for yearsssssssss, and then my mom had to take it down because of course it’s my mom and of course she had to do it.
Can you sleep when it's really hot? Welcome to summer months in the Philippines.
Do you know anyone who works at McDonald's? I think Carley does, but idk if that’s changed in the last few months. I don’t stay updated about her life, haven’t been for years.
Do you have a debit card? Yes.
What bank do you (or your family) use? I am not sharing that lol.
Would you ever hitchhike? I think I’m mostly open to it, though I will say I’ve read enough stories about murders that involve hitchhiking that make me a little scared of the idea, hahah.
Have you ever been kayaking? We did a boat thing in Palawan a few years ago but I’m not sure if that was kayaking or canoeing. Anywho, the experience was breathtaking.
Do you have a problem with swimming in a pond or lake? In the context of my country, yeah, because our natural bodies of water aren’t exactly...the cleanest, lmao. I’d feel much more comfortable swimming in a private beach.
Does anyone in your family go hunting or fishing? Nope. But maybe some of my relatives living in the US do?? Idk for sure.
What do/did you do when someone you barely knew asks you to sign their yearbook? We don’t really practice that. Only the really expensive, bougie, international schools here that have foreign students to begin with do that, I think.
In high school are you/were you in the plays and musicals? No.
Do you have a birdbath in your yard? No, we don’t.
Is the house you live in old or new? It’s fairly new; we had it first built in 2005 and we officially moved in 2008.
Where do you go when you need a new pair of sneakers? Depends on what brand I’m in the mood to buy.
Do you make New Year's Resolutions, or do you not even bother? I typically don’t.
Most annoying commercial? Haven’t been paying attention to them lately.
What does your favourite bathing suit look like? It’s just a simple black bikini but its overall shape and design is super cute and chic.
Do you like Silly Bandz? No.
If you do, how many do you have and what are your favourite shapes?
What do you think of My Super Sweet 16? I never watched it because I feel like I’d only get stressed if I did.
Do you have mini-blinds in your house? I have pull-down window shades in my room, not blinds.
Do you rent your home or do you own it? My parents own it.
What is your favourite song right now? Trigger by Hayley Williams.
Do you use Firefox? Nope.
Do you have a pool in your backyard? We don’t.
Do you have a gym membership? No.
Favourite field trip you've ever been on? Freshman year of high school when we went to two museums :)

I don’t have much to say this year. I worked a lot in order to save money to launch my textile company, and I found more jobs within my area of knowledge. Hopefully this will carry on in 2018 and I will have more work as an independant, English teacher. I also hope I will have more time to write, because let’s face it : I didn’t accomplish anything in this sector this past year, and it’s pretty frustrating for me. I met more new people, rekindled friendships, did my best to  be a good friend.
CONCERTS : The xx (amazing), Interpol, Roddy Woomble
ARTS : I decided to educate myself about ballet and went to see a few shows. It was magical ! I also attended several exhibitions, read a lot, and discovered places / cafés / restaurants in Paris that I didn’t know.
R.I.P. : Mary Tyler Moore, John Hurt, Emmanuelle Riva, Xavier Jugelé, Papy Gourgand, Nicky Hayden, Chris Cornell, Helmut Khol, Prof. Chabrol, Nelsan Ellis, Simone Veil, Myriam Miyakhami, Chester Bannington, Jeanne Moreau, Mireille Darc, Pierre Bergé, Hugh Hefner, Tom Petty, Keld, Jean D’Ormesson, Danielle Darrieux, Azzedine Alaia, Youri, Touffu, Johnny Halliday, Jean Rochefort, Odi.

you had me at ‘I loathe you’|| A Professor AU
Professor Joe al-Kaysani has been trying to get a grant for a research project for years. Enter the young habilitation candidate and new lecturer who snatches the money away from him on his first day at work. It’s the beginning of something great, even if it doesn’t look like it and takes all of Quynh’s matchmaking powers.
a first meeting in 3 parts.
Chapter Three
‘I’m scared.’
‘Hm.’
‘I mean it, all this could easily turn into a disaster. Do you think we need barrier tape to divide the garden into a Nicky and a Joe zone?’
‘Quynh?’
‘Yes, my love?’
‘Go to sleep. Please!’ Andy rolled onto her side, wrapped an arm around her waist and pulled her in, back under the duvet.
Quynh allowed her to snuggle into her shoulder but her thoughts still ran wild, ‘I’m just confused, you know? How did we get to this point, what exactly happened to make them hate each other?’
‘Are you going to sleep once we had this discussion? Because then, I might actually be up for this right now at,’ Andy peeked through her already closed eyes to read the clock on the nightstand, ‘two in the morning.’
‘Yes!’ Quynh bolted to sit upright in bed, ‘Okay, so, do you know what happened?’

Call for Papers: 6th Global Conference on Genocide
Call for Papers: 6th Global Conference on Genocide
The International Network of Genocide Scholars has issued a call for papers for its Sixth Global Conference on Genocide. The theme is “Genocide and Mass Violence: diagnosis, treatment, and recovery?” The call is here (English/Français/Español).
Laetitia Delouis, CNRS-AMU, Coordinadora del Comité Sr. Valery Ravix, AMU, IT Manager

I Would Like To Watch You Sleep
For @assholeachilleus - Thank you for prompting me, darling!
Pairing: Joe x Nicky (University Profs AU)
This is maybe turning into a series, I don’t know. It was fun to write though. Lots of fluff and soft moments.
2582 words

Joe let the door close without care for the colourful stained glass panels in the front door and the way they clinked when it slammed shut. He flinched back, internally chastising himself for doing exactly what he chided Andy for every time she came over for a visit or the odd book drop-off after hours. He dumped his bag onto the chair standing under the coat rail and tried to toe off his shoes without sitting and bending down which would, without doubt, further the beginning headache currently nestled behind his temples. On the shoe cabinet, next to the picture frame and the small, perpetually empty bowl that had been supposed to be used for the keys, was a stack of envelopes, leaning against the frame. The very first on top of the pile read ‘Human Resources.’ Joe groaned and sat down after all, the dress shoe laces adamant to stay in their tied form, even after he pushed his heel to the cabinet’s edge.
He left the shoes on the carpet, his eyes and mind too strained to care about the meticulous tidiness usually upheld in the hallway. There was no one else who could trip over them, after all, not once he was home on a Friday evening, shutting the world out for the weekend.
Joe left his rain-damp jacket on the coat rack, pulled the belt out of his suit trousers and flung it over his bag on the chair. The bag had dug into his shoulder towards the end of his trip home from the university, making it harder for him to hold back the headache that had emerged during the last stressful office hours he had squeezed in spontaneously when his students asked for extra time to ask questions. He had worked it out and ended up offering additional support and guidance to his students on their final term assignments and papers.
The kitchen was empty when he walked past the door that was left ajar, with a pot of leftover pasta and sauce still sitting on the stove. Joe stopped for a moment and filled up a glass of water for himself that he finished in one gulp and refilled it again immediately to take farther into the house. Moving through the hallway and into the living room, he relished in the feeling of the soft carpet underneath his feet.
They had decided on the room distribution long before they had signed the purchase agreement for the house. The kitchen, bathroom and living room had been easy enough but once it came to bedroom, workspace and the surplus room upstairs, they had needed to sit down together and discuss where they saw themselves going.
Joe sighed, exhaling through his nose. He was about to sit down on the sofa and open the latest monography on pre-renaissance art in the orient he had bought himself, when he heard the quiet shuffling of paper and muttered words from the semi-closed off corner they had designated as their working space.
‘Nicky, is that you? Are you home already?’ Joe opened the last door on the ground floor and stepped into the office.
