Sketchbooks 14 &15 are a bit different. They spread over some years from about AD 2006 to 2015. They stopped and started and there was a big gap of about 8 years in the middle when I often thought about revisiting this idea but usually didn’t. Sketchbook 14 is called “Sketches for Britain” after a postcard I found and was when I had a bee in my bonnet about wanting to write a graphic novel. I had an idea for a pretty mundane story about unrequited love and loneliness but also about a kind of love as mutual support. It involved a gay lad falling in love with a divorced straight guy who had fallen in hard times. His loneliness leads him to become attached to the gay lad in a kind of unfair way because he understands that the gay lad is falling in love with him and he can’t feel that. It was imagined as a kind of discussion of male vulnerability and a kind of awkward friendship. The older character was a skinhead who had forgotten who he was and turned to the bottle. Really it was an excuse for me to process in my own head the kind of unrequited love that me and many gay people go through at some point (and on one level how poignant, formative and important that can be despite how painful it feels). It was also an excuse to collect pictures of loads of beautiful men to draw from. I wanted to have the music playing in the background in various scenes to replace the idea of thought bubbles to describe the character’s mood. It was set in the early 90s in gorgeous Toxteth and the music was all from the the beautiful lyrics of the English Beat. I struggled with how detailed the drawings should be. It was all very mawkish (so be kind). I never had any training in writing or drawing graphic novels so I was clueless but it was an itch I needed to scratch. Recently seeing real comics like the incredibly succinct work of @jaydeelunt I can now see how overblown it was but maybe I’ll come back and do it properly at some point.
