A/N: this is my first attempt at writing for runaways and Karolina so I hope you enjoy! I didn’t have much time to edit so I apologise for any mistakes

You heard the rain before you saw it, the soft patter of droplets hitting the roof filling the room. Reluctantly you opened your eyes, still heavy from sleep. The sky outside was so dark that you wondered if it really was morning. Once your eyes adjusted to the minimal light they landed on the window across from you, the sheer curtains drawn to the side. Rain had already decorated the glass, a collage of droplets, and when paired with the dull blue sky it was impossible to see anything except a nearby tree which swayed in the wind. You groaned before you turned to lay on your other side, disheartened by the weather. You were greeted by a blonde halo of hair that framed your girlfriend’s face. Karolina was fast asleep, and your heart skipped a beat when you saw how peaceful and serene she appeared. She really did look like a Disney princess. Her eyelids began to flutter as she slowly began to wake up. She took a deep breath before opening her eyes, their incredible blue colour taking your breath away as usual. Karolina smiled lazily as she studied your face before letting out a soft laugh, a sound that you could’ve sworn belonged to angels.
“What?” you asked, raising your eyebrows.
“Why do you look so gloomy?”
“It’s raining.” You pouted.
She rolled her eyes, amused by your antics, before extending an arm to you.
“Well we will just have to sleep in, won’t we?”
You gave her a sheepish smile before accepting her offer, cuddling into her side as she lay on her back. The two of you lay together in silence, immersed in body heat and the sound of rain. Karolina’s nimble fingers played with your hair, lulling you back to a state of unconsciousness.
“Wanna make a bet?” she asked suddenly, her voice soft yet husky from sleep.
You looked up at her and frowned as her blue eyes twinkled with mischief.
“What did you have in mind?” You asked, curiosity getting the best of you.
With a swift movement Karolina moved to lay on her side, making you groan from the sudden lack of warmth. Yet now you were face to face and incredibly close.
“So, you hate the rain,” she started, a hand absentmindedly moving your hair from your face as you nodded. Her featherlike touch sent shivers down your spine but you kept your gaze steady. “I bet that I can make you happy.”
You frowned, lips twitching upwards. “Karolina, you already make me happy.”
She rolled her eyes but smiled lovingly nevertheless. “I love you too babe. But I’m serious. I’m going to make sure that you have the best day ever, rain or no rain.”
Upon seeing your hesitation, she added, “loser buys the winner dinner for a week. And does all the dishes.”
Suddenly you found yourself agreeing to her delusional plan. She smiled gleefully before she cupped your face, delivering a sweet kiss to your lips. You grinned as you kissed her back just as gently. The kiss might not have been fierce but it was just as passionate and intimate. She slowly pulled away and smiled at you warmly. By now you had become entangled with each other, legs intertwined amongst white sheets.
“Let the games begin.”

You didn’t think to take her words literally. Yet two hours later, after warm showers and pancakes, Karolina presented you with an assortment of board games. You laughed when you entered the living room, drying your wet hair, to find Karolina sitting in between two piles of boxes.
“Love, you know that we still have power, right? And internet?”
She shushed you and extended her hand, making a grabbing motion. With an amused sigh you carefully placed the now damp towel down before you moved to join her in the city of boxes. You took her hand as you sat opposite her, watching as she gave you a bright smile that made your heart melt. She ran her thumb over the back of your hand as she searched for a specific box with the other, all the while you watched her lovingly.
As if she sensed your smile she muttered, “you having fun?”
You were quick to make your face neutral as he turned to look at you sideways, her face just as serious.
“Why would you suggest such a thing?” A moment passed before she cracked, laughing softly as she finally found her desired game. You smiled as she revealed her game of choice, letting it fall to the group with a small thump as she struggled to hold onto the box with one hand. Karolina began to set up the game as you studied the box, frowning.
“Scrabble?”
She simply nodded as you looked at her in confusion. “Karolina, you hate Scrabble.”
“No, I like to win and you always beat me,” she said before giving you a mischievous smile. “So this isn’t normal Scrabble. This is Scrabble, Karolina style.”
Her version of the game turned out to involve a lot of cheating and made-up words, which honestly surprised you. While you knew that Karolina wasn’t the virtuous poster girl that everyone thought of her as, you didn’t expect her to cheat. Yet her version turned out to be better than the original, especially once the game got more intense. The rain outside acted as white noise while the two of you competed, both quite competitive. In fact, you almost flipped the board when she scored 108 points for ‘ZOONING’.
“That’s unfair!” you exclaimed as she calculated her total while beaming.
“This entire game is unfair! You’re just mad because ‘JEFFY’ only got you 52 points.”
Your retort was interrupted by a sudden clap of thunder, making you yelp. The smile on Karolina’s face washed away, as did your playful irritation. She crawled around the board to sit by your side. Immediately you snuggled into her side, apologising for your childish fear.
“It’s okay,” she whispered. “This means that I won the game.”
You groaned as she laughed, rubbing small circles on your back soothingly. The game sat in front of you both, long forgotten.
“Okay, let’s do something else. You hungry?” she mumbled, kissing your forehead. In response your stomach growled, making her laugh.

You sat on the counter as Karolina mixed various ingredients together. She was making chocolate chip cookies, your favourite snack. You passed her the flour as you watched her stir the batter, her repetitive movements setting your mind at ease. However, it also caused you to lose focus. It only took seconds before Karolina was covered in flour, a puff of white powder exploding in front of her. This caused you to snap out of your daze and gasp. She stood still as you jumped off the counter and began to fuss over her, feeling incredibly guilty. You didn’t know what to do as she blinked flour out of her eyes. Her entire face was stark white, completely covered in flour. It also dusted her hair and covered her front, yet thankfully she had worn an apron. Hesitantly you wiped the flour from her face with your hands, laughing nervously when you could see her face.
“Hi there.”
Most of the flour came off, although there were still white streaks across her face. Neither of you had attempted her hair or front yet.
“I’m so, so sorry.” You gushed, before you began to laugh at the situation. Now able to see properly, she looked down at herself, taking in her flour covered form. She joined in your laughter, both of you acknowledging how ridiculous she looked. You continued to apologise in between giggles.
“Seriously, I’m fine.” She managed to squeak, possessed by laughter.
Suddenly she stopped and turned to look at you, completely serious. The mood changed instantly, your own laughter faltering you looked at her now blank complexion.
“However, I do need something to make me feel better.”
You looked her dead in the eye, heart racing.
“Anything.” You stammered, bewildered.
With an innocent smile she extended her arms to you, your eyes widening instantly. She began to walk towards you, painfully slow, as you backed away.
“No, don’t you dare.” You said as she smiled at you. But it was too late. Within seconds she wrapped her arms around your body. You let out a scream as she pushed her body flush against yours. Usually the gesture would make you blush, but this was different. This was war. When she finally let you go you stammered back and groaned, looking at your now ruined clothes. Karolina laughed as you pouted, satisfied with her revenge. But you weren’t prepared to give up that easily. Distracted by laughing at you, Karolina didn’t notice as you picked up the spatula and flicked it towards her. She gasped as she was assaulted with batter, the cool sludge landing on her cheek and nose. You grinned as her eyes flickered towards you, spatula still in hand. That was the formal declaration of war.
Ten minutes later, after much screaming, laughing and running, the fighting finally ceased. You both stood in the kitchen breathing heavily, covered in various foods. The kitchen was no better, a mixture of wet and dry ingredients everywhere. Flour had been the main weapon of choice, as you had wanted to save as much batter as possible. However, foul play had been made by the use of eggs. Bits of shell were stuck to your hair as the yolk began to drip onto the floor, curtesy of Karolina. Hesitantly, you placed your hand on your head and immediately shuddered. The egg’s slimy consistency made you squirm.
“Now I have to wash my hair again.” You complained, huffing while studying your hand.
Karolina looked at you before gesturing to herself. You weren’t the only one in need of a shower.
“But that was fun, right?” she asked, teasingly.
You shrugged. “It was, but now I’m dirty.”
“You are impossible.” She sighed lovingly, placing a small kiss on your lips.
She let you have the first shower as she began to clean the kitchen. You didn’t complain.
“I’m gonna win this bet!” she shouted as you left the room. You suddenly became aware of the rain outside which hadn’t ceased, yet you didn’t mind. The repetitive sound was almost comforting, thanks to her. You were determined to not let it show that Karolina had already won.

It was late afternoon when the power went off. It was bound to happen eventually due to the storm’s increasing intensity. Yet you were both prepared. Karolina’s cookies had been baked (how you had enough batter amazed you) and the kettle had been boiled prior to the power cutting out. The two of you sat on the couch with fuzzy socks and warm cups of tea, surrounded by a dozen candles of various sizes and scents. Your hair was still wet from the shower, as was hers, yet she had placed it into a tight braid. You placed your head on her shoulder and she placed her head on top of yours, both of you staring into nothingness. You were surrounded by noise: the harsh rain outside, Karolina’s soft breathing, the quietest roar from the candles. It was incredibly peaceful, and you allowed yourself to relax and savour one of life’s rare and quiet moments. You let out a dramatic sigh as she laughed. “Really? That’s the only thing on your mind?”
“Not the only thing.” She said, winking at you.
Simultaneously, you flushed and gasped. “Karolina!”
“What? I’m talking about the cookies!”
To prove her point, she pulled away from you and took an almost perfectly round cookie. You rolled your eyes but smiled as she ate the baked good, her eyes never leaving yours.
“Well…” you started, leaning forward to place your cup down. Karolina looked at you curiously, eyebrows raised in anticipation.
Your mind floated back to this morning, entangled with Karolina as you drifted in and out of sleep. Then there were the board games and her version of Scrabble. You thought about the hysteria it caused but also the laughter that occurred as a consequence. You couldn’t forget the great food fight of the year. You both made an extraordinary mess, but the time spent throwing flour and batter at each other was worth it. Your mind drifted back to the current moment, blankets and tea and candles. Karolina’s face was a mixture of golden light and shadows as you looked at her thoughtfully. She really was beautiful.
“Well?” Karolina said impatiently.
You gave her a small smile. “Today was pretty good.”
She gave you a massive grin and leant forward, kissing you passionately. The rain outside grew heavier but you didn’t notice or care, for you were in Karolina’s arms.
“Does this mean I win?” she mumbled against your lips.
You laughed before nodding, giving her one final kiss before pulling away. “Congrats, winner.”
“Well, I hope your bank account likes take out.”
You both laughed as you playfully slapped her arm. Slowly your laughter drifted away until you sat in silence, surrounded by the sound of rain and soft breaths. You snuggled into her side and rested your chest on her chest. Her cheek rested on the top of your head, fingers absentmindedly playing with your hair. Your eyelids grew heavy as you glorified in Karolina’s warmth and the faint smell of cookie dough. You found comfort in the rain outside, something you didn’t think was possible. Slowly but surely, you drifted off into the realm of sleep, legs entangled with Karolina’s. Maybe rainy days weren’t so bad after all.
