It's actually kind of odd to me that even in lower decks, where the main characters being low-level workers is literally the point, we never see enlisted starfleet members.
The warp core four are all ensigns. They're still officers, even if they're junior officers (and tbh, a lot of the work they do is actually work that should be done by noncommissioned petty officers, not ensigns).
This makes some sense for who the characters are. The daughter of a captain and an admiral is obviously going to attend the academy and start out as an officer. Similarly, the heiress of the 5th largest orion syndicate family simply isn't going to be enlisted, I don't care how egalitarian and post-scarcity your utopia is. And someone like boimler who's main goal is to become captain would need to be an officer to achieve that. These choices make sense for the characters in question.
But it does feel weird to me that we never see enlisted members in a show that is literally called lower decks. I mean it's confirmed in multiple episodes of TNG and DS9 that starfleet has enlisted members (which of course they do, starfleet is literally just U.S. Navy In Space) so that seems like an obvious thing to include in the show.
I think the actual reason for this is probably just that mike mcmahan didn't grow up in a military family, learned everything he knows about military rank from star trek, and then when he was first storyboarding and googled navy ranks it was officer ranks that came up first.
Like I'm fairly certain, based on every interview I've seen with mcmahan, and also some of the plots in lower decks, that he just isn't a guy who knows a lot about the military. But honestly, I think that's kind of a bummer because you could milk a lot of comedy out of there being an even lower lower decks that the main four interact with.

Take this with a grain of salt. I'm PO2, been in for a little less than 10 years. The anon who asked if you were joining, here. You don't have to post this, but give it a thought.
Don't let your recruiter convince you to strike for a rate or go undes. If you have your heart set on a rate (with appropriate asvab scores) don't let them tell you otherwise. Trust me when I say this, we need you more than you need the navy lol! If you're going for college, highly recommend you read up on the latest NAVADMIN for first commands. Promotions just changed and expect a uniform change within by the time you get out of boot camp. Also, realize the active to inactive reserves time has changed, recently. All the little incentives you're about to get, make sure that's somewhere in writing. Either in your contract or on your orders, cause if it's not the navy will absolutely not pay you. Trust me, one of my sailors is dealing with this issue right now and it's a big mess for him.
Personal advice and preferences, Japan is nice (where I'm stationed now), but Europe is so much nicer.
Again, congrats with the recruiter. Hope the meeting goes well. Hope to see you in the fleet! 🫡
hey anon, i cannot express how much your advice genuinely means to me LMAO i really appreciate it, i can’t express it enough!!
I do have my heart set on a rate which is HM! I’ve heard a lot of conflicting information about the rate (overmanned vs undermanned type stuff, I’m well aware about the advancement rate!) but honestly, it’s genuinely the only rate I see myself being fulfilled in. I know a lot of people go for HM and I have one of those ASVAB study books to brush up on my math. My father is also a Navy vet (former navy nuke), so when I say he has definitely taught me to not sign for a rate i don’t want, it’s one of the first things on my mind haha!!
I will absolutely be triple reading over my paperwork in this process. thank you for all of the heads up! I hope everything gets sorted out for your sailor. Again, i cannot thank you enough for your kind words and insight!! 🫶🏻

I was thinking about Grim Reaper!Stone still and realized that when I wrote my first post about him, I made it seem like Bharat/Bharat Junior wasn't actually his first name because I just originally thought every version of Stone would change his name to Vikram after medically transitioning. But this version of Stone is meant to be like his father, the Marines wanted him to be like his father. And thus when he enlisted in the Marine Corps and transitioned, he changed his name to his father's and Grim Reaper!Stone is really Bharat Junior on his birth certificate.
And him being like his father is already heart-wrenching, but having his father's name as his first and middle name instead of just his middle name is somehow even more heart-wrenching.
Of course this made me spiral down a thought train which led to: Grim Reaper!Stone is the nightmare that keeps Canon!Stone up at night while Canon!Stone is the dream that makes Grim Reaper!Stone want to be asleep all the time. Because Canon!Stone dreads turning into his father and Grim Reaper!Stone thinks it's a miracle that he'd ever not be his father.
Is it normal for someone to be so obsessed about their own OC or am I just unusual (in a good way)?

at this stage in my life, i don’t think i would commit suicide directly, it just feels like a waste. If i’m going to die by my own volition, i would just join the armed forces to do something helpful for a bit, then volunteer to be deployed and put myself in the most dangerous position possible to ensure my death.

I’m going through my copy of The Lady Tars and this was just incredible.
William Brown (birth name is unknown) may have been the first black woman to serve in the British Royal Navy. While the book here says Brown served for 11 years as captain of the maintop (others say capt. of the foretop), there’s another conflicting account that has her rated as a landsman in the ship’s muster. The Times wrote about her and this is the main source that she was a foretopman. The paper also says that Brown intended to enlist again as a volunteer and it’s completely plausible she did. However, it’s completely unknown either way. What is known indisputably is there was a young black woman from Granada going by the name of William Brown serving on the H.M.S. Queen Charlotte in 1815.
#ripping my hair out coz yes. there was a woman going by William Brown in the navy in 1815#but that’s about all that can be verified#and the fact that there’s this conflicting account from The Times drives me up the walls#I want these people to have been better remembered and personally that’s where the genuine tragedy lies#did she re-enlist? did she have prize money? did she serve for a few weeks or over a decade??#more than likely she wasn’t a capt. of the main or foretop#especially if she really did only serve for a short period#there’s just a sadness in it that we don’t even know her story or really anything about her#that’s why I’ve been reading about all the polly olivers in the navy#but yeah. incredible that she even DID that#I hope she lived a good life#that’s all. I don’t like wild speculation when researching historical persons as tempting as it can be#so I only hope and wish the rest of her life was a good one#also it’s just so important to know these stories or what we can learn of them#a man (or woman) is only dead when their name is no longer spoken#I want to help keep these women alive for as long as I can#also PLEASE double check your sources! I ran into a few instances where person A just makes stuff up about person B’s findings so. please.#I don’t like making assumptions based on what *I* want to be true either so again. there’s very little known about her so take all this#with a few grains of salt#william brown#age of sail#history#women in the navy#(also frustrating coz William Brown was/is a pretty common name…)#I found a couple of other sources talking about her so I’m gonna see if there’s ANYTHING else I can find out#black history#I’ll come back to this and write it clearer. I’m running on fumes#also should add that The Lady Tars is a compilation of auto/biographies of 3 women and this is just from the foreword#but I need to nap rn

Speaking of MEPS stuff, while I was PDQ in the end it still amuses the hell out of me that I got a perfect score on ASVAP and they wanted me as a 54 (I think?) and when I asked they said I would be washing the vehicle pool.
A fucking military car-washer, I was probably the only person capable of using three-vowel words in the group and they said I could be a car washer for Uncle Sam.
