i’m currently rewatching TNG, and i completely forgot that in s2 e7 “Unnatural Selection”, picard takes over the transport controls from o’brien to beam pulaski back from darwin station, as to spare miles if anything were to go wrong.

Look I love emo McCoy who blows up his life because of the things that happen in STID or in Beyond as much as the next guy but what about an aos!McCoy who doesn’t do that and actually likes being on the Enterprise?
So the events of Beyond happen slightly differently so that both Jim and Spock both decide to leave the Enterprise, ie for this they have to be way more emotionally closed off than they actually are at the end of the movie. Meaning after they go through the hours of debriefing necessary after Beyond, Jim tells Spock that he’s accepted the role of vice admiral on Yorktown, saying he’ll recommend Spock for the Captaincy. Spock stands there for a second, like this is super awkward, I have decided that my presence is more requited on New Vulcan and I am continuing Ambassador Spock’s work.
They would stand there in an uncomfortable silence neither willing to talk through this and if its even a good idea or not and then they both nod at each other, “this was a great discussion, good luck on New Vulcan” “I wish your endeavour as Vice Admiral is fulfilling” and get the hell out of there.
At some point later Jim finally tells McCoy, he’s been putting it off since he knows Bones will try and talk him out of it and he really can’t handle that.
Bones of course tells him he’s being an idiot and what the hell do you think you’re going to do behind a desk. Jim just tells him its what he wants and that he’s doing what best for him. Bones doesn’t push too hard and just tells him some day he’s going to wake up and hate his life so much that he would be willling to steal a spaceship just to be captain again.
But then Bones sorta throws him for a loop, and tells Jim he’s going to miss him and the Enterprise won’t be the same without him. Not that he would ever admit it but Jim was sure that Bones would also leave the Enterprise if he left and maybe even take a position on the Yorktown, Cos like Bones hates space and Bones has sorta gone above and beyond for Jim. Jim really doesn’t know what to do about this. Since he’s emotionally closed off he does’t ask Bones to leave the Enterprise with him, so he just lets that idea go.
So McCoy stays as CMO because he’s already done the whole running away when things get tough thing and he actually loves being in space and exploring the great unknown, he just likes to complain. Also he can’t exactly hypo Jim and drag him back onto the Enterprise to be captain
Meaning Sulu becomes captain, Uhura is still chief communications officer, Chekov is the navigator, Scotty obviously stays as CE, Carol comes back as science officer and some rando is the pilot. (dont know who the first officer would be either Uhura or Chekov or maybe a new person who’s older)
Over the next five years McCoy stays in touch with both Jim and Spock, basically trying to get both of them to realise they belong on the Enterprise but neither budge.
The crew have fun wacky hijinks in space, while Jim and Spock both grow to hate the work they’re actually doing. Maybe Jim gets promoted to admiral which he some how hates even more. Spock realises he still is sorta out of place among Vulcans and has not actually married a good Vulcan girl and had children like he thought he was going to (how he survives pon farr is anyones guess) McCoy can see it on their faces when they talk but he’s stuck in the middle of deep space so theres nothing he can really do. (he also knows they have to come to this realisation themselves) However McCoy is having a great time, loving space, loving his job and doing the badass doctor thing. (I do think he tells them this hoping it will change their minds or maybe make them jealous or to be like what the hell guys I’m enjoying life, you guys should be happy too. This does not work)
Then finally the five year mission is over, Jim and Spock both go to Earth to see the triumphant return of the flagship.
McCoy just looks at both of them for a few moments and asks if they’re ready to steal that spaceship yet (and to get their heads out of their asses)

parallel work is something kira's grown accustomed to during her time as the first officer of deep space 9. after all, the limited space effectively made the wardroom a communal working space between her and the other members of the senior staff. so when sisko's office became kira's, the adjustment to not hearing the incessant bickering between julian and miles or the scoffing of worf telling them to work was a difficult one.
so when she and the doctor fell into a comfortable routine of doing their respective tasks in the same space? kira wasn't intent on breaking it any time soon. it's no surprise that sometimes they overlapped with their drastically different meal times.
this time, whatever the doctor replicated caught her interest. an offhanded nonchalant comment about from the item looked "good" or something along those lines left her lips.
which led her to her present predicament.
" oh, c'mon —— doctor. keep it. i didn't say that so you'd share. " the colonel scoffs before reaching for another PADD resting atop a pile of them. " besides, i'm not hung——"
perhaps, that's a lie. after all, kira's body seldom sent her hunger cues until she is absolutely famished and has an immediate need for food. it's an unfortunately common affliction amongst bajorans. besides, the fork is still hovering in front of her.
she shouldn't hold up the doctor's time.
a sheepish smile surfaces before taking a bite.
" oh. oh. mmm, it's good. what is this? "

he is doing his job!! going up to the bridge from time to time and flirting with jim and flirting arguing with spock gives him a chance to see what the mood on the bridge is like, and how the CO’s are holding up. thus assessing crew morale and whether or not he needs to come up with a thinly veiled excuse for jim to take a break tonight.
that bridge is full of workaholics who probably avoid sickbay at all cost for fear of being made to take time off for recovery. they truly do it for love of the job. they won’t go to him, so he needs to pop in and check up on them every now and then to ensure the health of the enterprise - as is his duty as cmo

I wrote this yesterday, and I still enjoy it today, so here it is~ It’s basically gen but I wrote it with them being in an established relationship in the last one, but since nothing hints at it, you can read it as a simple friendship if that’s your preference.

“Congratulations, Commander,” McCoy said as he stopped next to Spock, who was standing in front of the dark observatory window. “You’ve finally been promoted.”
“Doctor, you have an unsurpassed talent for stating the obvious.”
“No, I’m not taking the bait tonight. This is a party. No place for arguing.”
“Completely unnecessary one.”
McCoy narrowed his eyes. “People are happy for you, Spock.”
“A promotion is merely a step forward, nothing more. As I was already the second highest person in the command chain, nothing will change.”
“Maybe. But you’re a step closer to getting your own command.”
“I do not want command, Doctor.”
“Hm.”
“You do not sound convinced.”
“I know you, Spock.” And you’d make a fine captain someday, he didn’t say.
“Maybe not well enough.” Spock looked at him. “You’ve never shown confidence in my command decisions.”
“Then maybe the both of us still have something to learn about each other.” McCoy raised his glass and took a sip.

“There you are, Captain,” McCoy said as he entered the observatory deck and moved to stand next to Spock.
Spock sighed. “Doctor…”
“Yes, you don’t want me to call you that, but we don’t always get what we want.” McCoy pushed a glass in Spock’s direction. “Now, let's drink to celebrate them giving you the Enterprise.”
Spock took the glass, looking into the clear liquid.
“Can’t believe you’d talked me into staying,” McCoy grumbled, waiting for Spock to meet his eyes.
“I did no such thing, Doctor. As I recall, your words were ‘I can’t let you do this alone.’”
“Well”—McCoy rubbed his stomach and wet his lips—“someone needs to keep an eye on you.”
“And your company is welcome.”
McCoy’s cheeks heated. “Do you still not want the command?”
“That question is irrelevant now.”
McCoy measured him with a thoughtful look. “Well, drink it down.” McCoy raised his glass and waited for Spock to do the same. “Captain.” They clinked the glasses. “And… good luck.”

“Ambassador Spock,” McCoy said, sounding the syllables. “It does have a nice ring to it.”
“You are not opposed to it?” Spock asked.
McCoy frowned. “Why would I?”
“You have always maintained that I should pursue command.”
“You’d probably enjoy being an admiral more than…” McCoy swallowed and started again. “More than Jim did, but you like working with Sarek. You have the skills and you have your father’s charisma. You’d make a good diplomat. Besides, you’ve already made up your mind about it anyway.”
“You don’t seem surprised.”
McCoy smiled. “Years ago, I told you I knew you, Spock. I still know you, and you haven’t been happy in Starfleet for years. You’ve been running away at every opportunity to work with your father for close to ten years. It was inevitable. To tell you the truth, I expected it sooner.”
“My compliments on your insight.”
“Thank you,” McCoy said and chuckled. “Now, I can finally retire.”
“I’ve never held you back.”
“No, but you’d be lost without me. Captain.”

It's so funny to me that Dr. Bashir just decided to sneak into the Enterprise's medbay to see their new state-of-the-art medical equipment. Why couldn't he have just asked to see it??? I doubt Dr. Crusher would have a problem with another Starfleet CMO visiting. The only thing I can think of is that they've met before and she absolutely hates him for some reason.

I’ve finally started watching enterprise and can someone explain to with as little spoilers as possible how Vulcans “held humans back?” Like without counting keeping Vulcan technology to themselves can someone explain what they mean bc they keep stating it as fact?

fic idea.
The main plot is your standard spock and Kirk have been accused of fraternization and someone is investigating the claims. They are not in fact dating, but definitely in love with each other.
But the sub-plot revolves around the fact that Kirk is a flirty bitch, and flirts with literally all of the command staff all the time. The more investigating that happens the more it seems like the entirety of Enterprise is one giant polycule.
Yes Kirk and Spock spend a decent amount of their off time together, but Kirk also spends far too much time with his CMO and more time in engineering than any other Captain in the fleet. He openly flirts with his communications officer on the Bridge. The whole thing is completely unbecoming.
