Shakespeare: So, in Macbeth, the forest doesn't actually move, it's just an army holding branches

Ents with flower crowns.
Tumblr media
There are few things Ents do in haste. It is tradition after strong storms to gather all the fallen flowers—since it is a waste for them to wilt and fade so needlessly without one last use—and decorate themselves with them. The younger and less tree-like shepherds even go so far as to wind them into wreaths for the oldest who can no longer move.
thanks to @sharpestsatire for a challenging prompt and a new headcanon!

Of the Creation of the Ents
It seems that Tolkien himself is speaking through Yavanna, trying to remind us about the importance of trees. At the turn of the century, admirers of the English countryside were shocked and stressed by the scope of forests being cut. The sound of the axes’ blows constantly accompanied every working day. So, it must have been truly distressing to observe the diminishing number of trees. However, unlike Yavanna, these people could not count on the help of the Shepherds of the Trees.

'Well do I understand your speech,' he answered in the same language; 'yet few strangers do so. Why then do you not speak in the Common Tongue, as is the custom in the West, if you wish to be answered?' 'It is the will of Théoden King that none should enter his gates, save those who know our tongue and are our friends,' replied one of the guards.
I feel like there is a very interesting discussion to have here about nationalism and isolationism. In this dark days, people that should be on the same side of a conflict turn against each other; shut each other out. Lórien rejects dwarves on sight. Rohan speaks a language that foreigners don’t even understand. The Ents aren’t on anyone’s side because noone cares about trees.
The Enemy is already winning.
