You know what's unbearably adorable to me? When Éomer grieves Boromir's death by noting that Boromir seemed to him "more like to the swift sons of Eorl than to the grave Men of Gondor." Éomer doesn’t give a shit about Gondor’s illustrious history and culture and lineage and status. The best and highest compliment Éomer can think to give to a Gondorian he admired is to say, "he was one of us."

did you know that Éomer son of Éomund
has his own command in Aldburg, one of the chief settlements of Rohan
is given the title of the Third Marshal, one of the most important positions in Rohan, when he's still under thirty
is seen by Saruman as one of the two chief obstacles to the easy conquest of Rohan (the other being Théodred)
is relied on by his people and his uncle (once he is restored)
retains his integrity in an increasingly difficult and dangerous situation
admits he believes as his countrymen do, but is ready to change his mind when presented with new information (” Yes, and we could find a use for Gimli's axe and the bow of Legolas, if they will pardon my rash words concerning the Lady of the Wood. I spoke only as do all men in my land, and I would gladly learn better.”)
is quick to recognise and make important and powerful allies (Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli)
seems to have a witty sense of humour (”So many strange things have chanced that to learn the praise of a fair lady under the loving strokes of a Dwarf's axe will seem no great wonder.”)
apparently resists the influence of Saruman's voice to the degree where Saruman singles him out in the company at Orthanc
acts as Théoden's second in command during the war and takes active part in planning strategy
keeps his calm when Théoden, Rohan’s king and the leader of their people, lies dying and other Rohirrim are dismayed; he rallies them and holds them together during the battle. (admittedly even he loses his shit when he thinks Éowyn is dead, but considering at that point his whole family seems to be dead, I don’t blame him.)
composes some kick-ass verse in the middle of a huge battle
marries Lothíriel of Dol Amroth, the daughter of one of the most powerful lords of Gondor, expressing keen political instinct
is so successful as king that his people call him “the Blessed”
so if you think he's just some himbo, you probably weren't paying attention.

Peter Jackson’s ‘The Lord of the Rings’ trilogy is a very sexy group of movies but today I’m thinking about Karl Urban’s portrayal of Éomer, son of Éomund, and about his line from ‘Two Towers’ where he sits atop his steed Firefoot, surrounded by thousands of Eorlingas, all of whom are prepared to charge the forces surrounding Helms Deep, and he raises his sword high against a backdrop of radiant light and says, “Rohirrim, to the king!” and honestly?  That was like.  SUPER sexy of him.

do you ever think about how the Men in The Silmarillion were just some guys? just some people? I mean, the Elves are all Elves+, Elves from millennia before they began to fade in Middle Earth, Treelight-supercharged Elves who could go toe to toe with minor and sometimes even major gods...but the Men+ era of Númenor hadn’t started yet. The Men of Beleriand were the Rohirrim, not the Men of Gondor. Beren was Eomer - he had a sword, grit, friendship, and a job to do on behalf of those he loved. Hurin was Theoden, despairing as he watched his people fall to ruin, his children die and suffer. Eowyn and Haleth would’ve gotten along like a house on fire, or really a bar on fire. Multiple bars would’ve been on fire behind them. It’s called a girl’s night, look it up. AND YET THERE THEY WERE, holding the line beside those very Elves+, their friends, in Hithlum, in the Fens of Serech, at the Nirnaeth Arnoead until the end! Leading their people through lands beset by orcs and Ungoliant’s spawn! Defying Sauron to his face and prying a Silmaril from Morgoth’s crown! They were just some guys. I’m going to scream and never stop screaming.

Let this be the hour when we draw swords together. Fell deeds awake. Now for wrath, now for ruin, and the red dawn. Forth, Eorlingas!
There is a weekend to enjoy!

"The Ride of the Rohirrim"

And straightaway all the horns in the host were lifted up in music, and the blowing of the horns of Rohan in that hour was like a storm upon the plain and a thunder in the mountains.
-"The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King", by J.R.R. Tolkien
Not much that I can say about this scene that hasn't been said already. One of the most powerful, enduring moments of hope not just in Lord of the Rings, but in the whole of cinema history, made all the more so by the fact that it's not coming from a magical, supernatural source, but from Men showing up for other Men. An epic, beautiful, cathartic scene.
I remember seeing the film for the first time, I was so immersed in this battle I had quite forgotten that help was on its way. The horns blew, and I didn't know what that meant; the silhouettes appeared in the horizon, and I still didn't know what was going on. Only when the iconic, beautiful Rohan soundtrack started to slowly roll in, I finally realized what was happening, and felt my heart swelling to twice its size. It still does to this day.

Yes, yes, Sean Bean was afraid of the helicopter and Ian McKellan hated Elijah Wood’s music choices in the makeup trailer and Billy Boyd had to go to the emergency dentist in full hobbit get-up, but my absolute favorite behind-the-scenes tidbit from the LOTR movies is that half the riders of Rohan were actually women. A whole army full of Dernhelms, it just couldn’t be more *chef’s kiss*.

apparently Éomer is skilled enough poet/composer to spontaneously come up with verses in the middle of battle (and presumably he took part in the singing of Rohirrim on the Pelennor fields). it's also stated in ROTK that Dol Amroth has the best harpers of Gondor and it bears thinking that maybe Lothíriel was taught to play a harp as part of her education.
so do you think that Éomer and Lothíriel ever perform music together? 🤔 because I now do.

Me: “Arise now, arise, Riders of Théoden!
Dire deeds awake: dark is it eastward.
Let horse be bridled, horn be sounded!
Forth Eorlingas!
Arise, arise, Riders of Théoden!
Fell deeds awake: fire and slaughter!
Spear shall be shaken, shield be splintered,
a sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises!”
My OH: ”…hard time getting up, love?”
Me: “Bringing out the big guns!”
