MORE ABOUT AYA MATSUI
DISCLAIMER: This is not meant to attack Matsui nor any of the others who previously worked on the series (or those who currently work on the series). This is just to aid us in having an understanding of why Yamcha & Krillin are viewed in a negative light by the fandom. No hate towards them & we shouldn't harass any of them. We understand how things come about so that we can present corrections & prevent misinformation when appropriate by using discretion.
HER MISUNDERSTANDING OF VEGEBUL & DISDAIN FOR YAMCHA:
DBZ filler EP 124 & 125 were written by Aya Matsui. She is OBVIOUSLY a Vegeta fangirl who seems to not like Yamcha very much. In those episodes, Matsui writes for Bulma's parents talk about how amazingly strong Vegeta is and how good looking he is.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And without valid reason, Bulma was written to care WAY too much for the guy who threatened to kill her more than once, treated her like dirt, & was responsible for the death and torment of her friends.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And its revealed in the filler that Bulma wanted attention from her boyfriend AND a genocidal maniac who threatened her life multiple times. And the previous threat on her life was recent.
Tumblr media
This filler honestly made Bulma look worse than she was in the manga. Bulma was horny & dumb in the manga and regretted her actions. DBZ filler made Bulma appear as if she developed Stockholm Syndrome for Vegeta along with her Hybristophilia (sexual interest & attraction to criminals; Bandit Yamcha, Zarbon in filler, Vegeta).
Matsui appears to have been one of the many who believed the lie Future Bulma told Future Trunks & then wrote for Bulma to fall for Vegeta in an unbelievable way before Toriyama revealed what REALLY happened. In reality, Bulma stupidly slept with Vegeta anyway despite him being evil & genocidal because she was horny and currently single after breaking up with Yamcha again. Then, Bulma couldn't stand Vegeta for years.
Tumblr media
Aya Mastui & Toei had jumped the gun because they didn't know that Toriyama planned for Bulma to to regret sleeping with Vegeta. It WAS NOT some romantic story. There was no love between them when it began. They both hated each other after their one night stand & only came to care for each other over the span of many years due to Future Trunks.
It's a unique romance story that many VegeBul fans ignore for some reason in favor of a prince saving her from an abusive boyfriend when the prince was the actual abuser & so was she. Them forming a relationship due to their son from the future? No other DB couple has that kind of story.
Meanwhile, Yamcha gets ignored for the most part in DBZ EP 124 & 125 unless it was to make him look bad so that the currently evil Vegeta looked better. These two filler episodes were simply VEGETA WANKING. Just evidence of Matsui being a fan of Vegeta's design, but not understanding the character. And just as she did not understand the character well, most Vegeta fans don't understand him either & only like the husk of the character.
Nothing wrong with being a Vegeta fangirl or fanboy. Just pointing out a fact & how it skewed Matsui's depiction of reality in this & other instances. I just wonder why there aren't many fangirls/fanboys of End of Z Vegeta? That's my favorite Vegeta. Vegeta fans try to make evil Vegeta like EoZ Vegeta, so why not be a fan of the developed version of him instead of taking away development from the so-called "most developed character"? Seems unreasonable & illogical to me. Matsui seems to have became a fan of EoZ Vegeta with how she wrote GT Vegeta to behave.
But, back to her dislike for Yamcha...
Matsui wrote the filler scene of DBZ EP 70 where Bulma has a dartboard with Yamcha's face on it when Krillin & Gohan are searching for her.
Tumblr media
That dartboard was not present in the manga. And why would Bulma have that after she cried over Yamcha's death and went to Namek to bring him back to life? Makes her look worse than when she didn't take accountability for the arguments she started with Yamcha as she briefly fantasized about Goku for a moment on Namek in the original manga.
Tumblr media
I personally believe that back then, Matsui may have felt some sort of connection with Bulma in some way (not saying for a fact), but she didn't understand the character well (as many Bulma fans don't) & didn't realize that Bulma started the arguments instead of Yamcha. Then, Matsui gave Bulma a "Yamcha dartboard" in the episode she adapted.
HER DISDAIN FOR KRILLIN:
LASTLY... Aya Matsui also seemed to not like Krillin very much either as shown by DBZ EP 117 where Krillin is treated as a joke for most of the episode, Malon treats Krillin poorly, & she flirts with other guys right in front of him (even with Krillin's close friend Yamcha). Then, in DBZ EP 167, there is a scene that has Yamcha & Krillin training to fight Cell, and both are treated as clumsy jokes rather than highly skilled martial artists. But, Krillin is treated as more of a joke than Yamcha as Yamcha mocks then kicks him in the face.
So, Matsui seemed to have strongly disliked Yamcha, but disliked Krillin a bit more. Why do I say so? BECAUSE Matsui was the head writer of DBGT where Krillin and his family are inaccurately portrayed. Marron & others were written to behave like Bulma & Krillin is almost always insulted by his wife & daughter. And Yamcha is mostly absent for the entire series. She is also one of the ppl who worked under Takao Koyama; the headwriter for DBZ who strongly disliked Krillin. So, Koyama, Matsui, Kubota, & others of Koyama's "underlings" who worked on DBZ & GT wrote episodes that depicted both Krillin & Yamcha in negative ways.
So, thanks to Koyama, Matsui, & others, many fans do not understand Yamcha nor Krillin and have a false depiction of them which in many cases resulted in undue hatred of the characters.
Again, this is not to attack Matsui or anyone else. Just gathering information to share an understanding as to why filler scenes in DBZ have negatively impacted the perception of certain characters for all of these years. First we must know & understand, then we correct the perception in our own unique ways when the opportunity presents itself.

Hiii Everyone!!!
I've been around for years now and have never introduced myself. mainly cause I just choose to vibe and enjoy the posts people share, but first time for everything. You can just call me Key, I'm 24 and I go by she/her. I enjoy a variety of stuff from manwha, manga, anime, video game franchises, and just a bunch of other animated media you name its probably buried down in my blog somewhere. Every now and then I get motivation to create fanfiction. I have only written works the Dragonball and Super Mario fandom All my works are under the "Keep Reading". My DMs and askbox here is always open if you ever want to chat I apologize in advance if I come across as a bit awkward (socializing is not a strong suit of mine) or if it takes me a minute to reply (adulting and hobbies am I right?), otherwise I'm a pretty chill person. Thats about it!
One of these days I really want to change my Penname...But I've had it for years now and I'm way too attached to it lmao.
Super Mario Fics: So a lot of these are Princess Peach centric and I'm just crafting up an origin story and some other events following the 2023 film. The links take you to the tumblr post but I have included the AO3 and FFN (for reading preferences) links either in the original post itself or in the case of my earlier stuff in the reblogs.
Lost And Found
A Learning Opportunity (2 chapters on both AO3 and FFN. They are both on the same post here)
Thoughts Over Tea
Aftermath
Finding The Balance
Little Events (currently 3 chapters)
Chapter 1: The Dark
Chapter 2: A Decision
Chapter 3: The Coronation
Dragonball Fics: The first fandom I have ever written for (and by penname you could probably tell what I read mostly) I have only shared them on FFN and AO3 until now. I was just starting to write fanfiction with the first two so they might be kinda cringe I guess but that's 16 year old me for you haha. gonna embrace the cringe by sharing it on here anyways.
Tournament Day
The Prince Before The Day ( I am never gonna finish that one or go back to it lol)
Bulla's Easter Day
Even when I started making fics I'm still not sure what goes through my mind when it comes to the title or chapter titles its literally the first thing that comes to mind and nothing after that but we will get it one day for sure.
Here's Some WIPs (that's both written and not) you guys can look forward too from me. I'll remove them and add them under the appropriate fic tags once I post them:
Uncle Yamcha fic: It is currently three chapters. The first one is him and Trunks, second is Marron, and the third one is Bra/Bulla. I really want to think of one for him and Goten but nothing has come to my mind. I just think he's more close to Krillin and Bulma where he'd interact more with their kids and I can't think of a scenario for him and Goten or what they would even talk about but maybe something will come. (I've currently sent this off to my Beta for review but lemme know if you guys want to see the un-beta'd version I have on here cause I'm really forward to sharing it)
Untitled EOZ fic following after Goku leaves the Tournament grounds to train Uub. This one sits at about 8k words (not sure exactly cause I added a bunch of notes at the end for my beta to see where my thoughts were going with it all) anyways this one focuses mainly on Trunks, Goten, Marron, Pan, and Bra as really the older kids look forward to what may lie ahead. A lot of it is just me focusing on the dynamics they have with each other. When I saw that dlc for kakorat was going to be focused on that one that really makes me want to share this one. Again let me know if you want to see that.
Based on this Ask here you can already see that I've completed 2 out of my 5 ideas so that leaves the other ones and maybe more if I think of anything else. All of these will probably be added to my Little Events fic. a few little ideas not shared here but I've thought about and have some dialoge in mind but haven't fully created yet.
I want to do something where Mario and Haru interact I just think it'll be so neat.
Maybe something where I do my take on introducing Sarasland and Princess Daisy. Probably along the lines of Peach meeting Daisy for the first time.
I need to hop on the wholesome bros. content at some point and I know I wanna try my hand with Mia and Pio as a part of it.
I think thats it for now...I'll probably add more if I think of something as having somwhere to put it down no matter how small it is can be nice to look at and push me towards getting it done.

👻👓🥳 for the fanfic ask game
Thank you so much for the asks! 😘 Sorry it's taken so long to answer them 🙈
Here we go:
👻 What is your wildest headcanon?
Ah, I have so many to choose from! But the wildest one, I honestly don't know!? I can give you my favourite one though. I absolutely believe that Goku struggles with his connection to emotion (not just because of the bump to the head and his Saiyan roots, although they're both factors), but because of feelings of abandonment. He was hurt so much emotionally, so young. He lost his grandfather, *poof* just gone; he lost his best friend, Krillin. He had no recollection of his parents, and his only notion of family was his brother, Raditz. If he had been around other Saiyans, he would have learned how they dealt with and managed emotions by example, just the same as if he had grown up with a family (different experience, but he still would have learned by proximity). But he didn't, and as far as he was concerned, everyone leaves. So why would he consider actively making attachments? Everyone just existed around him, and his strength seemed to be the only quality that others were interested in, as an adversary or as a bodyguard etc. So why wouldn't he make a connection between that and maybe people staying? Maybe that helped spur him on and helped him pursue his aligned Saiyan interests? It didn't make him cold, like perhaps most humans would in that situation, but it made him emotionally distant. Hence the rage, anger, and frustration that boils out every time he thinks someone has been taken from him. I just think that he guards himself against that very well, and I imagine Chi-Chi is one of the few people - if not the only one - he'll talk to about it.
I genuinely believe that Goku finding out that he was a Saiyan was the most poignant change for his character, albeit a jarring and uncomfortable one. It was not long after that he started to mimic behaviours and drive from what he had seen from others and what had been told of. I have no doubt he wrestled with what it meant to be a saiyan (he still does if we go by DBS/EOZ timelines, even GT too, for that matter). But what it did give was purpose, belonging, and reason. All things he had been lacking an example of in his formative years (we're talking pre-Roshi here)
Sorry for the long brain vomit! It's just my ramblings on Goku's psyche. I could talk endlessly about it 😅😂
Anyway, moving on.....
👓 What helps you focus when you write?
I listen to music. Either lyrically or the feel of the music is usually matched to the scene I'm writing; sometimes that means having the same song(s) on loop. I have it at just a low enough level to occupy the constantly busy part of my brain and phase the everyday sounds around me, but not enough to distract me from what I'm writing. This means I can write almost anywhere if I have my earbuds and google docs XD
🥳 Why did you start writing fanfic?
My reasons are probably like most people's. I just didn't want the story to end. Either because scenes weren't fleshed out, there were time skips, or there was just too long a wait for more content. One of my first fanfics, almost two decades ago, was about a family trip to the marketplace during pre-Cell Games time. I wanted more slice of life, and they only showed a fraction of it. So I created a scene I'd like to see. It's still the reason why I write now.

If there's anything I've learned in both Dragon Ball and fiction in general, it is that nothing that was previously established is going to stay the same as it was before. Everything is subject to change over time, even if we don't necessarily like it.
Changing how Ultimate Gohan works, or never having a clear-cut example of how it works, is an example in Dragon Ball. Still, for a non-Dragon Ball example, you can quickly turn to what was once originally Canon for Star Wars regarding the expanded universe, AKA Legends.
And this might not even be a pure dragon ball discussion because of this Factor, as I'm definitely going to be talking about Star Wars Legends a lot. This might not be a pure Dragon Ball discussion because this thing that applies to Dragon Ball also applies to Star Wars.
They also applied to other franchises like Godzilla and even Ultraman at times. Marvel and DC are also primary examples of things being subject to change. A lot of things need to be considered. Now is this inherently a bad thing? No.
Whether or not something is good or bad depends on who you're asking at this point, as writing can simultaneously be objective and subjective as you can make arguments for both sides of that debate.
For an example of Dragon Ball not being safe from any possible changes, we have to take a look at Super, and even though people try to say that Super is not Canon, this factor of everything being subject to change for better or worse depending on who you ask must be considered.
Just because it was Canon back then in the original Dragon Ball doesn't mean the original Dragon Ball ending, which suggests ten peaceful years of peace, is entirely safe from being changed or sacred due to said Factor.
Just because it was previously established does not make it completely safe from being retconned. Just because it was the original Canon does not mean it is the current Canon. Meaning just because something is Canon then does not AUTOMATICALLY make it Canon now.
Super in multiple ways has retconned the end of Z which GT follows, for one, 10 years of peace after the death of Majin Buu implying that nothing really happened afterwards. This is contradicted by Battle of Gods and everything after it in Super.
Recon number 2 Bulma explicitly states to Goku at the end of Z, that she hasn't seen Goku in 5 years, well courtesy of Super, we now know that is no longer the case. As throughout the entirety of Super, Goku has seen Bulma and talked to her.
Why this is important is because Dragon Ball super superhero is set one year before the end of Z. This is another retcon that has been made. Then there's also the fact that Frieza is indeed alive in the story even though there is no mention of Frieza at all.
Nor any references to the events of super as I mentioned before 10 years of peace and Bulma had not seen Goku for 5 years. Another thing is that in super Vegeta does explicitly mention Uub when in the end of Z only Goku knew about him but clearly did not know exactly who he was.
Goku also knowing about Uub at least in the manga in the TOP is another clear indication that this factor of the ending of Z has been retconned as Goku has full knowledge of who Uub is.
Let's also keep in mind that theoretically Super can't happen before the eoz without retcons. Another major factor is that Goten and Trunks seem to still have an interest in fighting right before the ending of Z, just about while Goku and Vegeta were forcing them to enter the tournament and to train at the end of Z.
The fact that Goku trained Goten implies the Earth was peaceful. So that's another retcon right there. Another factor is that some of the lore has also been retconned as well like the functionality of fusions and how certain states of power work. And he is not training on his own.
The fact that Kabito Kai remains fused is another Factor too as GT as I mentioned followed the original ending of the Dragon Ball Z anime. And now we know that fusions can be temporary if it's either both mortals involved and if a fused God uses the Dragon Balls to defuse.
We also see Goku and Vegeta still keep their rivalry going so that is clearly another retcon right there and this is one of the retcons I think should still apply because in my opinion, Goku and Vegeta benefit too much from their rivalry.
But as I mentioned Dragon Ball is not the only franchise subject to change in retcons like this. And no one will truly agree if it's changed for the better or for the worst. We're also going to be dealing with non Dragon Ball examples as well so let's begin. So a major non Dragon Ball example is Star Wars as that Universe is constantly changing and has not one, but two expanded universes. Canon and Legends. With Legends being the original Canon of Star Wars beyond the movies and shows.
There were tons of storylines that added more and more layers to the Galaxy as a whole and focused a lot on other characters as well. And there were some changes that were made for better and for worse, depending on who you ask, which was oddly similar to Dragon Ball.
For example, You have the extremely controversial Dark Empire series for example which made a huge decision. This story is controversial even amongst Legends fans due to one major decision that the story made and that was to bring back Emperor Palpatine, who was the main antagonist at the time of the original trilogy with Darth Vader as another main antagonist. He was also killed in Return of the Jedi and Dark Empire takes place 6 years after the events of Return of the Jedi. This was a retcon from the Dark Empire.
Also for the Star Wars prequel fans you may also notice that they were changes in the prequels when a lot of the older material never referenced anything in the prequels and the reason for this is simply because the prequels didn't exist at that point. many of the recons were made to fit the prequels which added more layers to the universe overall.
We didn't know much about the various events in the Clone Wars that we do now in both continuities of Star Wars back in the day. We didn't know how the Empire Rose to power in the galaxy until the prequels. But George Lucas also borrowed elements of Legends.
He used Coruscant as the capital of the Republic in the prequels and in the Legends material it was formerly the imperial citywide planet. You also have mandalore that was introduced in the expanded universe which was eventually implemented in various games books and even shows.
We also didn't know much about Anakin's character before the prequels came out aside from him being Darth Vader. So this was another major factor into his character, that was added after the original trilogy which some people to this day do not actually speak kindly of. However like GT and super I've seen some people's opinions change, some for better some for worse. But I've also seen people's opinions not change over time.
Then you also have the critically acclaimed video games Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2 which are set thousands of years before the events of Star Wars the original trilogy and the prequels alike. Would add more aspects into the Jedi Order that would never be fully explained in before and determine that there was a long history in the Republic even if the Republic stated to have existed for a thousand years. You also have various different eras and events that occurred in the Legends material as well both before and after the original trilogy.
And we need to now mention the elephant in the room aside from Disney buying Star Wars when it comes to talking about canon in Star Wars due to the fact that this man was involved with Star Wars before Disney acquired it and that is Dave Filoni with his Clone Wars series. This was he most notorious for. Not the fact that he made bad content that a lot of Star Wars fans hated but because he outright contradicted and changed plenty of Clone Wars content in the Legends material which was meant to be a multimedia project, to his own liking. And unfortunately the hierarchy of Canon allowed him to get away with it and before the team in Lucas arts and Lucas film could rectify the issue, Disney acquired Star Wars and eventually made the biggest record in history which we will explain later.
However Dave Filoni is known for creating Star Wars the Clone Wars, the 2008 animated series but the problem with Star Wars the Clone Wars is that it actually retcons a lot of the previous Clone Wars content. It killed Adi Gallia before she was she was supposed to be killed off, it back Jedi Master Eoth after being killed in a earlier installment, it made Anakin Skywalker a Jedi Knight around the early months of the Clone Wars when Anakin was originally not a Jedi Knight until month 30 of it, it completely rewrote the history of the mandalorians, it literally retroactively changed and adapted the slaves of the Republic series which was a promotional comic for the Clone Wars, retroactively deeming that series non Canon, it changed Assaj Ventress's character, so much so that people literally thought that Faloni actually created her when in reality he didn't, and he changed so much of her story with the exception of her backstory that it deemed a lot of her character non-canon prior to the Clone Wars show. He also intended to completely change her end and the conclusion that the original creator of the character intended for her in the series as well.
These are just examples from Dave Filoni alone and Disney made the biggest retcon in history, by deeming Star Wars Legends completely non-canon. And the contradictions don't stop there. The sequel trilogies pretty much undo all the development that Han Luke and Leia underwent. It undermined all the things that they went through and completely destroyed everything they thought so hard to attain without a proper explanation. They made Luke Skywalker a coward and Han Solo a deadbeat. The Last Jedi undermined a lot of the buildup from Force awakens and the rise of Skywalker undermined The Last Jedi for damage control, Dave filoni's bad batch contradicts a lot of Celleb Dume/ Karran Jarris' story from rebels, particularly his time before the series with order 66, Dave filoni also butchered ahsoka's original story post Clone Wars with the Ahsoka novel. The secret trilogy like Legends also brought dark Empire elements by bringing Palpatine back in the rise of Skywalker, and like dark Empire before undid everything the previous trilogies built up to, the Kenobi show contradicted major aspects of the original trilogy by having Obi-Wan leave tatooine face Vader and meet Leia at the age of 10, and the list could simply go on and on.
The reason why I mentioned both these continuities along with dragon ball is that unlike Dragon Ball, Star Wars has a concrete Canon. That is, at least it is supposed to. And 5 years ago there was an argument that Canon was better than Legends because Canon more often than not was more consistent. 5 years ago there was an argument there. Now Cannon is very convoluted just like it was in Legends but unlike Canon, Legends had a concrete hierarchy of Canon. Back in 2014, Disney vowed to make sure that Canon remained consistent and that it would never contradict itself. Almost 10 years later, however, it's clear that Disney has not kept that promise. A lot of lore has also been changed as well as the history of the entire galaxy as well in the new Canon of Star Wars and even then there's a lot of inconsistencies. There are a lot of writers that have played a part in this but right now the worst offender has been Dave Filoni. It is not the fact that he is a terrible writer that is the issue, it is the fact that he does not respect the works of other writers at all and blatantly and seemingly intentionally butchers the story that the previous writer wrote.
In my opinion this deserves more backlash than Toriyama contradicting his own writing as he is not the creator of Star Wars. And some believe that he's actually also gone against George's works as well. There's a reason why the Star Wars community seemingly has more backlash towards him then Toriyama seems to have backlash in Dragon Ball. And even though Toriyama is allowed to change his story however he sees fit, he is still not free from criticism of it. But at the end of the day he is the creator of Dragon Ball therefore if he truly wants to make the changes he is in his right to do so. And if he wants to allow those writing for the franchise to tell their own stories and have no connection to his original one he is also in his right to do so. This is probably why in my opinion, Filoni deserves more backlash with Star Wars than Toriyama ever will deserve backlash with Dragon Ball is that simple fact. Because Toriyama is the creator of Dragon Ball, he is in his full right to make the changes to his own story that he wants to make even if he gets backlash for it. Filoni on the other hand does not own Star Wars and therefore is more susceptible to backlash because of the fact that Star Wars is not rightfully his. And people gave George Lucas backlash for the prequels which most of it in my opinion, was actually not deserved. As people literally treat him like shit purely for changing certain things from the original trilogy. But like with how Dragon Ball fans forget about Toriyama Star Wars fans forget one major fact about George Lucas in Star Wars. With two franchises that were created by either George Lucas or Akira Toriyama, respectively, George Lucas with Star Wars and Akira Toriyama Dragon Ball, whether the fans like it or not, unlike Toriyama and George Lucas, the fans are not the creators. George Lucas as the creator of Star Wars could change anything he wanted about Star Wars when he still owned it. The only reason why George Lucas is no longer able to do so is simply because he no longer owns Star Wars.
The only difference between Star Wars and Dragon Ball when it comes to the Creator's end is that Toriyama still technically owns Dragon Ball. He can change whatever he wants even if it goes against what he previously established. Even if he is getting the rights to his son and Toyotaro, it doesn't change the fact that Toriyama still technically owns his own franchise and ultimately can say how the story goes and literally do whatever he wants with it. This doesn't mean we have to like and accept everything though. If we don't like something then we don't like it but it doesn't necessarily change the fact that the changes will be made. It simply is what it is. Nothing is going to change that. We can criticize and complain as much as we want but at the end of the day we do not own these franchises. It is up to those who either created the franchise or those who own the franchise currently that have the final say. And whether or not we like it, doesn't matter.
We do not own these franchises therefore we can't decide how something goes when it comes to franchises. No one is going to like everything from an official franchise. No one is going to like every change made. Nobody is going to agree on the same topic. Everyone has a different perception, everyone has a different interpretation, everyone has a different idea of how something is played out or portrayed. However that doesn't automatically make it true. And it also doesn't mean that it isn't subject to change.
Marvel and DC have had a long history of retcons and reboots. And multiple continuities. So much so that they all exist in the Multiverse which pretty much makes them all Canon and part of one Canon as a result, while also being allowed to stand out on its own. Marvel and DC have had a track record of also taking things that they previously established and completely retconning them. In some cases erasing them from existence or even in other cases bringing them back. This not only applies in the various movies and shows but even in the comics and video games themselves. Some of these retcons are under the same umbrella as Star Wars and Dragon Ball on whether or not any of the changes were made for better or worse, depending on who you ask. Dragon Ball has a very divided fanbase, so do Marvel and DC. Star Wars also has an extremely divided fan base, these franchises always have.
Now before I conclude this let's talk about Godzilla for a little bit as Ultraman could be argued to have a similar dynamic with Marvel and DC with different universes. Godzilla has multiple series of movies and shows but did you know that not all of them are connected? Some movies are actually only able to be a standalone film. Others are set in completely different universes from each other. All the older Godzilla movies from the mid 1950s all the way to the 1970s where it's on Universe with the exception of a few called the showa Godzilla series. The '80s and '90s Godzilla films were set in a completely separate timeline which was the Heisei series for Godzilla. These were a series of movies that told a cohesive timeline but were their own separate timeline from each other. There's only one series that continues to follow this trend for the most part and that is the Godzilla monster verse made by Legendary Pictures and Warner brothers. You have two Godzilla anime that are two completely separate continuities, Godzilla singular point and the Godzilla anime movie trilogy, planet of the monsters, City in the edge of battle, and the planet eater. You have Godzilla 2000, to which only the original 1954 Godzilla movie was Canon, Godzilla versus megaguirus where certain aspects of of the 1954 film where Canon, you have giant monsters all out attack which again only had the original canonical to that movie, you had Godzilla Tokyo SOS which only had its predecessor Godzilla against mechagodzilla and Godzilla 1954 as Canon to that movie, and you had movies like Godzilla final Wars that were a completely standalone film and had no connection to any other films. You had a TriStar Godzilla movie which had a continuation through the animated series, Godzilla the series, which was a direct continuation from where the ending of the original TriStar film left off, you had a loose story of the pipe works Godzilla games. And you had plenty of Godzilla games that also told different stories as well that had no connection to the films or even the other installments of the franchise.
There are plenty of other franchises that are clear examples of the sentiment of nothing being subject to change and they're not being a true Canon in said franchises. But these are some of the examples that I know of and if anyone has other instances that they think they can add to the discussion, I will be happy to hear them out.

Song for goten and trunks amv in which the metaphorical meaning of the whole vid is that theyve started the habit of jerking each other off but the whole thing is self-aware and tongue-in-cheek and CLASSY ans they kind of know theyre making a music video rn. . I dont know how else to explain it . Maybe i have to draw it to get you to fuck with my vision. Goten has long hair and a robe and a wine glass at various points thoruhgout the vid. IS IT GETTING THROUGH ? IS IT CLICKING ? This song smooth grooves like no other. GOTEN & TRUNKS: BEST BFFS FOREVER. They can pull this off and NO ONE ELSE CAN. BTW we dont know if theyre actually jerking eachother off these days or if this is just a metaphrocial music video they wanted to make bc it was funny. We really dont care. All we know is that they can pull it off. They can do everything  GUYS BEING DUDES. So to reiterate. Song for metaphroical jerking-each-other-off music video that is self-aware and not without humour. And it’s gotrn and trunks from dragon ball EOZ or between EOZ and GT just as long as goten has long hair i feel like that’s vital AS ALWASY . Same way that it’s vital when you talk abt him listening to Dragula by Rob Zombie. This is platonic btw just to reiterate but i shoudnt say it bc thats how secure they are . they dont need to say it

but also, he was the LITERAL PLAYER CHAR in EoZ, and then??? when shes transferred to new orleans he??? just stopped existing???? theres no mention of him???? I HAVE QUESTIONS

The band started in high school of 2005

Later on micheal left the band and Chris met Ryan. Ryan then joined as guitarist of the band. Chris met Ricky in 2009. Frank left the band and Ricky was the new bassist for MIW.
MIW got more popular in 2009 when they tour around the state's in a van. Tj left the band a year later to join escape the fate (Ronnie radke of falling in reverse old band and bless the fall singer Craig band) Ricky then became the new rythmn guitarist of the band. Ghost (Devin) join as the bass player of the band. During the infamous album creation Angelo was feeling ill he couldn't play drums well anymore he gets tired easily and his drum skills wasn't good at all he was eating bad that it make him weak. He couldn't drum anymore so he left the band. The band had other drummers help record their albums. Brandon was the touring drummer for the band till the end of the reincarnated album. The band met vinny and he became the new drummer he was in the reincarnated music video playing drums but you can't see him much in the music video. Vinny then became a member of MIW not a tour drummer anymore but a actually member of MIW. Josh left the band around this time. In the graveyard shift era after the making of the album the whole band kicked ghost out of the band because the fans told the band what ghost did to fans which was very gross. The band kicked him out and Justin from ice nine kills join the band as bassist then he quit ice nine kills to be working full time for MIW. Disguise is the first album where the whole current members of the band created songs without other people doing it for them.
Chris history from high school to now:
Chris grew up in Pennsylvania. He met his friends who end up being the band members of the band he wanted to create he wasn't expecting to be the main singer. At a young age Chris started getting tattoos everywhere.
Chris cared about the band and just went for it.
Demos of the band was created. Chris is a perfectionist he wants the album to be perfect so he was judging everything in order to make a album he liked. Band members left but he didn't quit the band he try to find new band members and try to meet new bands. He worked hard for the band he carry the whole band and make sure the band was doing well. Chris thanks Ryan and Ricky for being the most loyal band members staying with him all these years and not leaving him. Chris had the fear of failing the band breaking up and Chris dreams crushing down but Chris didn't let that happen at all. And here we are today.
Ryan Sitkowski college to now:
Ryan dropped out of college to join MIW at age 17. He was new to the band and Josh didn't like him at all. Ryan was at a young age traveling all over the state with the band. Ryan haven't shared much of his life on the internet he kept it more private. Ryan got a girlfriend and then when the lockdown happen he started streaming on twitch to interact with fans and made a discord too.
Ricky Olson high school to now:
Ricky is the oldest of his siblings. When Ricky was young he was playing with his friends sports and something hit his tooth so half of Ricky teeth is fake. He mention he cry to his mom on the phone because of it. Ricky in middle school wanted to be in a band because his friends played instruments and he wanted to join them. Ricky in high school was a shy boy who had a few friends but they were mostly fake friends. Ricky Olson begin to play guitar and write stories because of the inspiration of Ville Valo from HIM. He became obsessed with HIM. Ricky was in a band in high school as the lead singer but was kicked out for sounding like Ville valo. One of Ricky dreams was to be in a band and also a film maker. In college he study film production. While also working in band merch booth selling band merch to people. But since Ricky was too shy he got yelled at for not speaking up and selling more. Ricky was in a bad time around 2008 and 2009. He share this in a blog years ago about this. He was in a lost place had a bad past and he was thinking of the past all the time and future worrying about failing the future he wanted to be in a band but he was so lost he had no idea what to do in his life. He would day dream about being in a band and then cry to sleep every night about his life. He had depression and gave up with everything in his life. He drank achoul every day. One day on his sister 16 birthday Ricky was drunk coming home from work to go to his parents house his sister was sleeping in her bed.
Tw// self harm and suicide attempt:
Ricky was laying in his sister's bed he cut his arm with a knife it was a lot Ricky was sobbing while watching the blood going down his arm to the floor his dad saw what happen and ask Ricky what happen. Ricky was sobbing and yelling he wanted to die many times. He passed out and went to the hospital he lost a lot of blood and the achoul level was really high he drank way too much. He almost died. He end up getting better and went to see a therapist. He went to see MIW with a friend. Ricky met Chris and the band thought Ricky was cool so he invited them to stay at his house. Chris text Ricky being like should join our band. Ricky would often say idk if I should he didn't know if he would be good enough for the band.
He later on join and quit college but Ricky mention still feeling depressed while in the band. Josh ballaz disliked Ricky when he joined too. 2 years later Ricky moved to rythmn guitarist but he wasn't used to playing guitar since he mostly did bass so he often made mistakes on guitar. He was still learning to play guitar. Things got better for Ricky. But his dream job was always filming he does some film stuff on tour and at home. Though he knew he probably won't be a film maker for movies like he dream of doing he makes whatever he can make. Ricky has stomach problems he often went to the doctor because of it.
Vinny Mauro childhood to now:
Vinny is one of the youngest children of his family. He has many siblings. Vinny mention on stream that he had a bad past. He mention that his dad would take achoul all the time and not give a fuck about vinny. Vinny mom would always go after Vinny. Vinny as a kid was a trouble maker he would disobey his parents and think it was funny. His mom would throw stuff at him and threaten him. His dad gave him a drum set so vinny end up learning to play drums he self taught himself to play drums. He listen to music and got into new types of music he likes all types of music. In middle school a girl that he liked asked him if he can play paramore on drums and vinny played it for her.
In high school vinny was a outcast and loner he made friends in his neighborhood but at school he had no friend. He didn't fit in with anyone. He mention in Ricky Olson podcast his high school life. Ricky ask him how he didn't find friends in high school. Vinny mention saying he didn't fit in with anyone he is also a shy person so he doesn't go up to new people. He was more a loner and was fine with it. Vinny went to uni to study computer programming but he didn't like it at all he was often bored he posted videos of him drumming on his YouTube channel. He knew a guy who knew MIW. MIW was looking for a drummer and they asked vinny to try out for drums in another country which was Australia. Vinny dropped out of college and told his parents what he was doing they weren't happy about that but he end up going over there trying out drums but he was very nervous. He met the band and then went to start drumming. Chris and Ricky were in the same room as vinny they were watching him play drums. Chris being very judgemental. He often scares Ricky when he's on guitar and Ricky fear to make a single mistake in front of Chris and vinny felt that fear. He even said I think I mess up a few times on drums. After he finish drumming. Ricky and Chris went to talk said not a single word and vinny was sweating so much thinking he made a mistake and he won't be part of the band. Later on Chris made vinny part of the band. Vinny became the tour member of the band then he became a member of MIW.
Years later vinny decided to interact more with fans since he had time to so he livestreams on twitch and has discord to interact with fans.
The lock down happen and vinny spend time interacting with fans. He lives with his friend in a house together. But something about vinny these few years mostly months to now that was starting to show. Vinny was suddenly showing signs of depression he often tweet depressing stuff but each year got worst for him. 2020 was the start of vinny's down fall. He had so much self hate he hated his hair, his body, his looks everything about himself he hate. He even tweeted saying I'm sad so I'm going to make a song. He release alone. Even he tweeted about something sad saying 2020 was a bad start for him and Ricky ask if he was ok and hoping vinny was just joking around. During December vinny had back pains because of a sneeze that hurt his nerves so vinny was in so much pain and he didn't see a doctor he thought he could fight it himself just taking pain meds to him. In Jan of 2021 the start of vinny down hill. He was in so much pain he couldn't leave his room or chair he couldn't even drum. He was very depressed. He hated life so much. A month later he got better and went back to streaming but still he was struggling there was some bad stuff happening anyway with him. The covid shot made him sick Saying he didnt eat anything for 4 days he felt like throwing up he even woke up in the middle of the night thinking he was going to do it and other stuff that made him depressed. Around April of this year small amount of fans notice something was going on with vinny he mention so much self hate about himself. In May he mention he was fine but a week later he said he was depressed and talking about what happen months ago and years ago. Sharing something about his family past and he stopped himself saying he doesn't want to get too into it. Vinny mention that he was eating food once a day because he felt like he is fat for over eating food all the time so he end up just eating dinner only everyday. He done it since the beginning of March and still is doing it. He wanted to loss weight. So he doesn't want breakfast and lunch but he eats dinner.
Around may vinny was in rock bottom he talk to no one at all even Ryan was 30 mins away from vinny and he ask him why he didn't go to see him and vinny said he didn't know why. Vinny mention saying he talked to no one for a week straight he also mention he isn't the kind of person to go up to people he said he's very introverted. he stopped streaming for weeks because he was doing bad. He said he felt burnt out and tired.
He took his break off social media for many weeks. Around this time many fans notice vinny was really not doing well.
Then he return to streaming around the 18th of June. Just to say hi he said he miss his fans but he plans to stream again a few weeks later. He mention that he have been avoiding all human contact and was staying in his room playing video games and drums all day still with the once a meal thing he does. Vinny said he's not depressed but people ask him about his depressing tweets and he said is it really depressing. Someone ask him why he is listening to sad music and he said am I not allowed to enjoy music. Now more fans are worried about him. Many more fans noticing that vinny isn't ok and he's hiding it.
That's basically all of MIW history I could give.
I will update and add more to the list later when something new happens. The vinny stuff is true I been watching his streams a lot and he mention those stuff so I just wanted to share what he said. I been a MIW fan for 8 months so I may not know Ryan and Justin as much as the others. Since they don't share much about themselves.
Hoping you enjoy this. Free feel to comment somethings I forgot to add.
Please don't argue about ghost ok. Ty

So, how big of a role do you think Pan's actually going to play in DBS Super Hero? Like, think she'll be a main character in it, or are we maybe expecting too much of it just because of the aged up design?
I mean we still don't know what the actual PLOT of the movie is going to be, so it's difficult to make judgements or predictions about what literally anyone is going to be doing in the movie at this stage when all we have is some character designs and the knowledge that Pan is slightly older and Piccolo has a house now. And I'm pretty bad at making predictions this early that turn out accurate.
Like, considering they've specifically jumped ahead far enough for Pan to be in Kindergarten, her design being one of the first revealed while a lot of other characters (Including Goten and Trunks who should also be older, and heck even Vegeta) haven't yet, and that at the last panel someone actually said she'd have an important role, I don't think we're wrong about her being important to the story in some way. But that could take several forms.
Like, the story is apparently based around the concept of super heroes and just what heroism means in the context of Dragon Ball, so it's possible Pan could be some kind of viewpoint character/observer to the story going on and getting her perspective on her family and the kinds of crazy, world saving adventures they get wrapped up in. Heck, that'd make sense for why Piccolo has a house now, we could get a scene of Pan visiting him and the two just talking about things like Piccolo's relationship with her dad (Who's a superhero, appropriately given the premise).
That'd probably make the most sense in my opinion. The whole thing could basically be that Pan gets roped into whatever shenanigans are going on in the movie, and by the end she's fully motivated to start training seriously and be more like Goku and Gohan, basically leading into where she was during the epilogue of the manga.
I doubt we're going to see Pan do much fighting apart from maybe she'll get a moment like Gohan saving Goku from Raditz where she gets a quick power boost and helps out during a crucial moment, because let's be real for all her potential she's still practically a toddler while Goku, Vegeta, Gohan and the strongest Z Fighters are all basically physical gods at this point in the story, there's little she probably can do without a magic power up or if the villains have some weaker mooks.
And honestly, that'd be enough for me, I'd just like for her to be cute and endearing, get fleshed out a little more, have some good interactions with other characters and just maybe do one or two useful things while getting some character development/introspection.
It's all they really need to do with her for now until they're ready to take the story further beyond EoZ and progress Pan to a point where she can be physically capable of standing alongside the Z fighters and have a bigger impact on the direction of the story.
Again, this approach just sounds the most logical to me with what little information we have, but we're gonna have to wait for a plot synopsis or a full trailer before we can make any solid judgements on where they're going with her, for better or worse.
Hopefully we'll get a better idea of what the story is there after the New York Comic con panel. I'll speculate with you on it then.

If Goku ever fell into the Narutoverse, how strong do you think Naruto would become?
It depends on what version of Goku we’re talking about?
Is this the Goku after the 23rd World Tournament, the Goku after the Saiyan Saga, the Goku after the Frieza or Cell Saga or even the Buu Saga or is this a Goku Pre or POST Super, EOZ Goku or even GT Goku??

when you talk abot dbz characters i very quickly forget youre talking about like shounen anime superpowered fighters and shit because it just feels like youre talking about realass people. like your posts are from the world where dbz is a nuanced experimental character drama. and then goten does some freak shit in a public bathroom or yajirobe licks that cat before i get too comfortable. its genuinely unironically inspiring
I just can't have it any other way ...
Actually when I see people interacting with dragon ball in an appropriate fashion, that respects and acknowledges its shonen anime reality, I'm like "Mhm Mhm Ok Well See Now This is How you Do It. I need to internalize this & learn from this..." and I'm kind of embarrassed that I'm too ridiculous to do it like that.
I love what you've said here thouhg like Yeah that seems to be what I think & how I operate .., That it's a nuanced experimental character drama. Never heard those words put together like that in that order but I think that I'm following perfectly. YOU NAILED IT
Thank you <3 Be inspired to thrive & be weird always and for forever.
Thank you for saying that Goten does freak shit in the public restroom becasue I've been tyhinking on & off lately about one of my , ealriest dbz ideas, which is that EOZ Trunks is reading Gamer Magazine while on the can, and he hears someboyd bumble into the bathroom and take the stall nhext to him sloppy style, and he's cool with it and respecvts it, and then he hears a voice mutter something stupid like "Ah geez nice and easy .. Cannot go home with a blown out hole today" and it's GOTEN'S voice and TRunks says "GOTEN? THAT YOU?" just fucking thrilled just ecstatic. And Goten stands up and puts his head over the stall and says "TRUNKS!! What're you up to, man?"
"Nothing much just dropping a load!"
"Right on, man, me too! Take it easy, alright?"
"Yeah man you too!"
And then he goes back to reading his magazine, with the pleasant glow of social satisfaction. And the last panel is Goten's butt appearing underneath the stall divider, pointing toward Trunks. And Trunks doesnt notice. And it just ends . . .

A SHORT RANT ABOUT VEGETA
I don't talk about Vegeta because I hate him. I talk about him because most of his fans have delusions about his character. Fanfics are cool & all, but ppl think its true. Vegeta fans often misrepresent his character which belittles his actual character growth in the series.
If Vegeta somehow became a good guy when he got with Bulma, then that makes him worse in the Cell saga when he "betrayed" everyone and doesn't care if Bulma and his infant son die. The truth is that Bulma made a bad decision & got with a genocidal mad-man. It made no sense for her to besides shock value, but thats what Toriyama wrote in order to keep Vegeta relevant & connected to the story.
If Vegeta became a super good guy during the 7 yr time skip to the Buu saga, (& not an obsessed man-child with some redeemable qualities) then that makes it worse for Vegeta's character. He's a super good guy that suddenly allows his obsession with Goku let himself get controlled by Babidi? And then Vegeta easily breaks the mind control & murderers tons of ppl in the audience & fires a blast that almost hits Bulma? He almost killed the woman he is supposed to love. Thats not a good guy. It took him killing tons of ppl & almost his own wife in order for him to realize he messed up. The only saving grace is that he realized he did care for his family before he sacrificed himself. The only selfless act he did for others(besides future Trunks when he died).
But that doesn't automatically make him good. This was the true change from evil to good. Ignoring this is disregarding his character arc that Vegeta fans say is so great.
I know so much and understand Vegeta because he was one of my favorite characters at one point. But he isn't now because I dislike how his character is being handled. He's still one of my favorite villains tho.
I dislike his DBS characterization because he isn't advancing to how he was at the End of Z. EoZ Vegeta was a calm and confident character that seemed respectable. THAT IS THE BEST VERSION OF VEGETA.
The overconfident Vegeta is lame and beta as hell. The dub makes Vegeta worse at times too. In DBS when Bulma tells him to go hang out with the others during her party instead of sitting alone, he says something like "Sure. Like I'd want to hang out with Yamcha." That isn't said in the Japanese version. That line makes Vegeta seem insecure and that he thinks that Yamcha could steal Bulma from him. That is beta thinking. An alpha is confident that his woman will stick with him because of his actions that attract her. So in the ENG dub, Vegeta didn't want to show up for his wife's party because training was more important, then he pouts about her ex who did come to Bulma's party? Yeah... That doesn't make Vegeta look cool.
I could go on all day about how I want Vegeta to improve but I won't. But if you notice when I do criticize Vegeta, I try to always give constructive criticism because I want the amazing EoZ Vegeta to be liked by fans more. Z & DBS Vegeta is a beta while EoZ Vegeta is an alpha male.

Temple University professor Marc Lamont Hill recently made an astonishing claim when hedeclared: “I literally study Yemeni and Moroccan Jews for a living.” Perhaps Professor Hill doesn’t earn his living at Temple University, because the subjects (media and education) he teaches there seem to have absolutely nothing to do with the study of Yemeni and Moroccan Jews. I was also unable to find any scholarly study of the history of Yemeni and Moroccan Jews authored by Hill.
But while Hill’s claim looks very much like a pathetic attempt to assert academic expertise, it’s noteworthy that he was apparently trying to create an aura of authority for a project he has been working on. As Hill announced: “I finished a film that devotes 20% to Mizrahis [i.e. Middle Eastern Jews]. And I talk about them regularly.”
The film Hill referred to is apparently “Black in the Holy Land”, and you can watch the trailer on YouTube – but before you do so, you should read an EoZ post from last February. Amazingly enough, the trailer for Hill’s “documentary” starts off with convicted terrorist Ali Jiddah, who “planted four hand grenades on Strauss Street in downtown Jerusalem in 1968. The blasts injured nine Israelis.”
Jiddah served 17 years in prison and was released in a prisoner swap. Since then, he has devoted himself to demonizing Israel, and as he told the Times of Israel a few years ago: “I am satisfied, and I am convinced that the work I am doing today is more effective than the bomb I planted in 1968.”

I really appreciate how Dragon Ball Super went back to being about Dragon Ball's original theme of self-improvement.
The original Dragon Ball series was about Goku's journey to becoming a master martial artist - about him above all learning patience and understanding of his limits and that no matter what, there will always be ways for him to improve.
These turning points happen in his fight against Jackie Chun and during his training with Kami, which are, in large part, rounded off during the 23rd World Martial Arts Tournament, but are revisited at various points in the story in various guises.
Along the way he spurs his antagonists and friends alike to improve and grow stronger and better, as well.
I've talked about how most of the thematic substance in the story is very loosely connected and more arc specific, especially in the Z portion of the story and I think it all has to do with very little effort being put into connecting any of the ideas of the story to each other.
The theme of self-improvement is slowly buried behind all the other ideas the story decides to focus on and as time goes on, even contradicted.
It still works when Goku is revealed to be an alien because he is established to be a low class warrior of his race - the theme is simply related to him not being bound by his birth status and being able to grow beyond it through hard work. We also have Krillin, Tenshinhan, Gohan, Piccolo, Yamcha and Yajirobe stepping up against the Saiyans and showing their growth through that - as much as I dislike that Yamcha's and Tenshinhan's character arcs are never highlighted.
They are treated like generic nobodies, rather than long-time members of the cast. You could argue it's to show how terrifying the Saiyans/Nappa is, but you can do that while respecting their characters.
Despite this issue I have with how their characters are treated, I don't think any of it shakes the story thematically yet in the big picture.
However, this arc does also introduce the Saiyans and their special race traits and through that the story's habit of throwing many of the other characters aside. This is something the prevails across the whole story and into much of Super, too.
The Freeza saga is about becoming stronger and better than you already are in much more vague ways. Only Gohan's and Piccolo's continued character journeys and the idea of the Super Saiyan adhere to it and Gohan and Piccolo are pretty clearly side characters in it.
They do matter in terms of several plot points, but the story doesn't really zoom in on the idea of their growth specifically - the arc is more about identity and racism, however basic way they are covered.
The most significant thematic part of the Freeza arc to me is Goku's Super Saiyan speech as the acceptance of his Saiyan heritage. He is one and makes peace with it - having questioned it before he let Vegeta go (this actually is much better executed in the anime because of Goku initially straight-up denying his relation to the Saiyans).
Self-acceptance can be part of self-improvement because it grants inner peace, but the story doesn't really connect or explore the two ideas in any meaningful way. There is never any substantial struggle for Goku about controlling Super Saiyan, either, so it's all a very surface-level representation of the theme of self-improvement.
On the other hand, the Cell arc really does seem to go back to this theme and actually even connect it's arc specific theme to it.
The Cell Saga is about Gohan finally stepping up. Goku's ultimate sacrifice and Vegeta growing to care and helping to defeat Cell by the end kind of count, too - bringing long-term arcs to their ahead.
As much as I love Piccolo's remerging with Kami from a symbolic POV, his actual substantial growth happened in the Saiyan Saga and was done by Namek. I feel like his actual principles and character didn't change in signficant ways through the mergings with Kami and Nail (the plot importance laid in Piccolo having to grow stronger), but they still were expressions of his growth in the Saiyan saga.
Cell doesn't actually really start off by being about Gohan's, Vegeta's or Goku's arcs - the Cell portion actually feels kind of disconnected from the rest of the arc.
The initial theme of the arc is actually "you can choose your fate". This is expressed through the Androids' rebellion against Gero and the very premise of the arc - Trunks came back so the fate of everyone could be changed.
You can connect this theme to being related to the idea of self-improvement - after all, how our lives go should be of our own choosing, but at the same time, we can choose to be good or bad people when we have the choice. Gohan brings it up in the battle against Cell. Add to that, as poorly as I think it's handled, Cell is supposed to be the manifestation of all the negative traits of the characters.
So, seemingly the only problem with the Cell arc thematically is that it's theme is confined to a select few characters - for a series talking about how anyone can achieve anything by working hard and can always be better than their current selves, it sure takes the chance from a lot of the cast to do so.
The problem I have with the Cell arc is that while I think it works thematically in isolation, it doesn't in context of the bigger picture.
After Cell comes the Buu arc, which I think is an absolute thematic disaster and my biggest example of how DB lost it's direction.
I love the direction it goes in tonally because it's the closest to how Dragon Ball originally felt, but it's a complete mess otherwise.
Yes, we have Vegeta's redemption and him willing to work together with Goku and we have good Buu's arc with Mr. Satan, but we also have Goten and Trunks being introduced and never learning anything or amounting to anything and Gohan's arc not getting any follow-up - his newly discovered flaw of arrogance and how his power influences him is never substantially addressed or resolved in any way. We see it again when he gets his Ultimate Gohan power-up, but nothing is really done with it.
Add to that, the power-up is the most unearned one of the whole arc - Goku's SSJ3 transformation and Trunks and Goten getting SSJ are bad, too, but Gohan's is extra bad because he has setup behind him. They all grow stronger, but it's not tied to any character growth.
The fusion is introduced as a means to have the characters learn to fight together, but by the end it isn't that effective and thus doesn't work that well thematically.
Goku's sacrifice means nothing not because he comes back, but because him taking responsibility isn't treated like it's part of his arc and followed through on. It represents the self-improvement theme just fine in isolation, but it's not something that is consistent.
EoZ even straight-up trivializes Goku's journey by just having him leave everyone - he says he'll visit, but the issue here isn't in the established details, it's the thematic significance of it and the connotation it decides to leave the story off on. Along with growing stronger character and strength-wise, his whole journey was about finding his place in society, too - how everyone around him shapes him and is important to him.
Even if it actually isn't the intention to trivialize this theme, it *feels* like it's just sort of thrown away within the span of a few chapters/episodes - the last chapters of the story at that.
It leaves you asking what the point of following these hundreds of episodes/manga chapters was. Maybe it was Toriyama's way of being subversive by saying "it doesn't really matter what it means, it only matters that we had fun", which is unique and certainly a twist in terms of storytelling conventions, but it's really frustrating and feels like being contrarian to the story's themes just for the sake of being contrarian.
There really isn't a single thematic thread that isn't contradicted in the Buu saga at some point, but there is also no consistent theme at all. It's a confused mess.
So I appreciate how Super kind of refocuses itself thematically.
In BoG, Beerus is introduced as lazy and uncaring, but by the end of Super changes for the better and starts caring just a little bit.
Goku is also reintroduced to the old lesson that there is always someone stronger than him out there. I don't particularly count him putting his selfish wishes aside to save everyone as new because he basically always ends up doing that in most of his fights.
I have a bunch of problems with RoF.
Whis spells out the ways in which Goku and Vegeta could improve themselves, but the ultimate thematic point of RoF doesn't work because Whis is the one who saves everyone - Goku and Vegeta didn't overcome any of the flaws Whis highlighted in any capacity. As much as I dislike that and how obtaining Blue wasn't connected to any shown character development, either, it was actually about Goku and Vegeta having to overcome their major flaws. In addition to that, Freeza is linked to the theme of self-improvement, too, which offers a new perspective on it because it's a villainous version of it, particularly come the ToP.
It's actual character substance that is actually connected to one of the main themes of the story.
The U6 arc has Cabba and Hit as the biggest examples.
You could argue that Cabba getting SSJ so quickly is annoying, but narratively SSJ hasn't been relevant for a long time, so I feel like it doesn't really matter. It was also established that the U6 are different from U7 Saiyans - not only because they are stated to have evolved differently, but also because they have different designs. They are clearly intended to be distinct from U7, only sharing basic traits.
The U6 arc's final battle is about surpassing limits in the most literal sense and also creates an arc for Hit - he learns to enjoy himself again and we later see him also softening up and learning to care.
However, later on, Botamo, Magetta and Frost get a share of this theme, too.
Botamo and Magetta learn to work together, something foreshadowed in the teamwork of the baseball episode.
Frost is shown to have grown stronger when he meets Hit again.
Going back a little bit, though, I think the FT arc is excellent when it comes to this theme. Zamasu's arc is a direct negative parallel to Goku's journey of learning patience - he has no patience for mortals because of all the negativity he sees in them and simple cynicism grows into hate. He is straight-up in a direct opposition to the idea that people could become better people, more specifically.
The ToP is the direct thematic follow-up to this.
Most major and some minor characters go through arcs.
I think they are not always perfectly written character arcs and Jiren specifically should've been set up across the arc, rather than just saved for the end, but I still also like most of them and I think most of them work out by the end.
I like Kale's arc and her standing on equal grounds with Caulifla by the end.
I like Ribrianne realizing her perspective on love isn't absolute and perfect.
I like that Jiren softens up by the end.
I like Cabba taking the lesson he learned from Vegeta to heart.
Going to the main cast, when looking at Goku and his role in this arc, Ultra Instinct is pretty much perfect as the pinnacle of his growth so far. It combines his lessons from Roshi, Korin, Kami and Whis and makes it into my favorite power-up of the series. It's not "new", but still a perfect representation of Goku's journey and the lessons he has learned.
I like that Gohan's arrogance was addressed, but also that his whole arc across the story was made about his indecisiveness. So, he was actually connected to the theme of self-improvement again.
17, 18 and Freeza actually feel like they have the most natural arcs of the ToP to me.
17's and 18's most signficant actions in the tournament are selfless actions that consider others. 18 saves 17 and 17 wishes the universes back. They have come a long way from being directionless jerkish brats.
Freeza is an extremely fascinating example thematically because his arc is a parallel to Goku's: learning patience, but also learning to work for what he wants. He simply uses these lessons for the sake of evil.
Krillin is also a great example of self-improvement: he faces his fears and decides to fight again.
The note the story decides to leave on is disapproving of Zamasu: all of these character arcs and 17's wish show that people can change.
Next, Broly is actually also a little more vague about this theme again, focusing more on the other main idea of the story - the value and importance of the connections with others to us and how the people around us shape us.
The most significant thematic parts are Goku telling Broly to not follow bad people and Broly's SSJ transformation - they bring the movie together thematically for me.
The change of Bardock from Minus does adhere to the self-improvement theme, though. It gives weight to Beerus's initial indifference because Bardock was a Saiyan we saw wanting to be better.
Perhaps if Beerus had given them time, they could've grown to be better? This is bolstered by how the U6 Saiyans actually did grow to be better.
Finally, I like Moro so far because he currently challanges the heroes by different means than they have been challanged so far, leading to a different kind of self-improvement being possible for the characters.
So, I think Super itself is an extremely thematically tight story because it has very few divergences and contradictions (most of them being in RoF).
Unlike the original story, I think it validates the struggles of most of the characters and makes the story directly about one of it's main themes again.
Now it's important that the story wouldn't go back on all these arcs and development because that would just repeat the Buu saga problem of leading to thematic contradiction and confusion.

Goodbye, GT
This is a very personal post written mostly for the sake of posterity and closure. You're free to read it if you really want, but I'd rather nobody comment or make a big deal out of anything I say here, I just needed to get my thoughts written out for the sake of moving on. So I'd rather people just scroll past.
Well, I finally finished watching Dragon Ball GT subbed. Thank goodness.
I have a lot of complex thoughts on GT, many of them very negative. I've made it no secret that I hate this series, and I have a lot of reasons why I hate it. The complete refusal to do anything meaningful with the vast majority of the supporting cast (With the things they actually do end up being very minor stuff, or downright insulting), especially the complete mishandling of Pan and Uub's characters. The boring stories, the bad designs and the general aesthetic of the show. The unengaging fights, and that utterly STUPID ending!
There were a few things I liked here and there, but in general I have a lot to complain about. And maybe if people ask me I will talk more about the show, but since this will likely be the last time I ever watch it, I felt now was a good time to really wax poetic about why I really feel so negatively about it.
Because after really thinking everything over and my experiences with GT and the franchise in general, I think I've found a more deep-seated reason besides it's own admittedly poor quality as a show. And I just wanted to get it all out for posterity's sake and so I can really move on.
I watched GT as it was airing on Welsh television as a kid, the Blue Water Dub specifically. It aired right after Dragon Ball Z finished, and the original Dragon Ball started airing after GT wrapped up. Like with DBZ, I watched every episode as it aired, and in general my childhood self enjoyed it. I was too young and stupid to really think critically about most of the media I consumed, so I never tended to notice any flaws in the shows I watched.
And Dragon Ball Z was my favourite growing up, alongside Spider-man The Animated series, so naturally I was inclined to think of everything GT did as being amazing and cool. And to be fair, yeah there is some cool stuff here, I can see why I enjoyed it. Even though now that I look back, a lot of it didn't stick with me the same way the stories, action and characters of DBZ and later Dragon Ball did.
I was confused and uncertain about the ending, but given that the original Dragon Ball started airing soon after I was never much concerned with it. Dragon Ball couldn't really be over, here was more of it showing me all that backstory and stuff that was always hinted at or flashbacked to in Z but I never saw for some reason. I quickly fell in love with OG Dragon Ball the same way i did with it's sequel series.
It was soon after that series finished airing, however, and I came to accept that Dragon Ball was over... that a powerful, uneasy feeling started to set in. While I know I hadn't actually been watching it for ALL of my life, it really did feel like Dragon Ball had always been there. A constant, welcoming, wonderful presence in my life that made everything feel so much cooler and life in general so much more fulfilling. Something to always look forward to...
I didn't dwell on it too hard at the time, but as time passed, and life generally got harder and more miserable as time went on (I'm pretty sure I was in secondary school when Dragon Ball finished, and that was one of the worst parts of my life, let me tell you!), I started to feel very alone and wistful.
To give an idea of what I was going through without giving too much away, I was losing friends, with my longest friendship ending in a great personal betrayal, my home life was an utter mess right up to and through my parents divorcing.
And between school work, undiagnosed aspergers that my teachers refused to acknowledge might be a possibility, and just realising how harsh, cruel and kind of miserable the world really was... let's just say that I became a pretty closed off, miserable person for a while.
I got better when I started going to college and life in general became more stable, but through all of that, and for the next several years after it even... the thing that made it especially unbearable, was that through it all, I felt like something was missing.
Something important, something grounding. Something that had helped carry me through life prior to all that, and give me something to always look forward to and find comfort in whenever things seemed rough.
It felt like a part of my soul had been missing for a long time, and I never understood why.
I think it was during my later years in secondary school that my family got a computer for the first time. I can clearly remember spending so many hours of my life browsing through wiki's of all sorts of shows, games and movies I liked.
One day, I inevitably started looking up Dragon Ball stuff.
I went all in trying to find as much information as possible about this series. I read all up about the behind the scenes information and Akira Toriyama's writing process. I read up on all the characters, the manga prototypes of Dragon Ball, and the reasons for why Toriyama wrote a lot of things the way he did.
I learned about all of the dub changes, and the various dubs that were out there for that matter. I used to have a laugh about some of them. Learned about a lot of the movies, games, Specials and other stuff I hadn't been aware of because I'd never seen them before.
While I didn't have any DVD's for the series available for a while and felt uncomfortable pirating the show (Didn't stop me from looking at some other things on YouTube, I notice though... I'm a weirdo :p), but I did frequently refamiliarize myself with stuff that had happened.
And when Dragon Ball Z Kai became a thing, I watched that, and I kept up with animated specials like the Yo! Son Goku and his friends return! special or Episode of Bardock (Which I actually watched before I even watched Bardock: Father of Goku, despite knowing about that special and everything that happened in it for a while, for some reason...).
I remember hearing about Dragon Ball Online and all the stuff about it's lore, and being utterly fascinated by the prospect, since I had never imagined another take on the series post-EoZ other than GT actually being presented, even though I REALLY did wish we had more.
Over time as I was doing this, the feeling of wonder and fun that I had always felt watching Dragon Ball as a kid started to come back, and I remembered why I loved this series so much. How much it meant to me... and how sad it made me that it seemed the series would never come back.
Oh, don't get me wrong, I appreciated that we had stuff like the video games, or the occasional specials, and even the SD manga when that became a thing was something I frequently read synopsis for since I didn't know where to actually read the manga for a while. I was glad there was content being made... but it was never nearly the same thing as having a proper continuation, you know.
And a lot of the stuff we got, like the YO! special, was pretty mediocre fluff in the long run. It was fun, but it didn't fill the void. And I thought nothing ever would.
I had begun to realize what that missing part of my soul had been.
I was excited when I heard about Battle of Gods being released, but I also assumed it would just be a one-off thing, something that would be great to pass the time and give me another chance to see all those characters I loved again, but it wouldn't lead to anything bigger. And despite stuff like the hints of there being multiple different universes, I was still certain by the time Resurrection F was announced that an occasional mostly self-contained movie would be the best we could ask for in terms of new Dragon Ball content.
I can't even begin to tell you how shocked... and how darn HAPPY I was when Super was announced. I never expected it to happen... I couldn't believe it was. For the first time in years... a new Dragon Ball series. One that ignored GT's continuity, and thus it's definitive ending, and opened up the possibility of more new Dragon Ball stories for many years to come.
I wanted to cry.
I didn't start watching the show until it was part-way through the Champa saga... mostly because there weren't legal ways to view it until part-way through the Future Trunks saga, and I thought I'd wait for the dub at first. but keeping up with news and spoilers about what was happening, and browsing the tv tropes pages for Super every day and watching clips on YouTube, I just couldn't control myself and started looking up episodes of the Champa saga myself.
And oh God... I felt at home. I mean, it wasn't a perfect story, really, but... it was good. And it was new Dragon Ball. Watching things unfold was such a magical experience, and when it got to the Hit fight... HOLY COW, was my mind blown. THAT... that was Dragon Ball, through and through! And then we got the Baby Pan episode, and dear God that was adorably perfect and I love it to bits. And then we found out that Future Trunks was coming back for a saga, and the new villain for it and, OH GOD THE EXCITEMENT!
Having Dragon Ball back in my life again was just... it felt just so... right. The missing part of my soul was restored. I had my childhood... I had my best friend back.
I suppose by now you're wondering about how all of this relates to GT. You're probably thinking "Oh well then, you only hate it because you blame it for ending Dragon Ball for so long!" and... well, okay, that's kind of on point. But I didn't hate it for that until after I actually re-watched the series not too long ago.
Truth is, I've always defended GT. I mean, I knew it had problems just listening to people talk about it, and remembering it for myself. I definitely agreed the ending was wrong. But... I remembered liking it as a kid. Even loving it.
I remembered there were ideas and a few characters I really liked. People complain about a lot of things in DBZ as well, yet whenever I re-watch that and the original Dragon Ball, they both hold up exceptionally well despite some issues. Better than so many things from my childhood.
So, why shouldn't GT hold up the same? I always told people that GT was okay, that a lot of people overreacted and that it wasn't anything offensive. People were just overreacting.
I strongly believed that for years. I was glad it was non-canon, because that meant there was another chance for another, better post-EoZ series that utilized the next gen characters (And the long standing supporting cast, for that matter) better, and I didn't want Dragon Ball to have a definitive ending. But I stubbornly refused to have negative feelings about GT.
I started re-watching GT when Super was about half-way through, out of curiosity and because I wanted to have an actually up to date, informed opinion on it. Especially where comparisons to Super came up.
I didn't go into the series intending to be negative, I went in with the intention of DEFENDING IT. I knew there would be stuff that would annoy me or that would be frustrating, but I wanted to enjoy it like I had as a child. I wanted to be able to say with confidence that despite it's faults, GT was a worthwhile addition to the Dragon Ball franchise and that I liked it.
And for the first two to five episodes, I did kind of enjoy it, despite some things I took issue with...
But the more I watched and was bored of the first saga, and the more I started looking ahead and really dwelling on what went on in the show. How it used the characters, how the stories were written and how it ended... after a while, I started to doubt it. I started to dislike it more and more.
While I had made up my mind about GT not being a good continuation of Dragon Ball Z by the time I finished the Baby saga, I still mostly enjoyed that saga at least, despite some glaring issues that bothered me. I was willing to say that was mostly fine. I hated the Super 17 saga a lot, but even going into the Shadow Dragons saga, I expected to like that. I tried very hard to be positive going into it... and then it kept spitting in my face.
And by the time I got to the penultimate episode, I was sick of the show and glad to stop watching it. I did something I never expected myself to do, and declared it horrible, a blight on the franchise! And I meant it, because after experiencing such a disappointing let down, and especially after that insulting final episode when I did watch it... I felt betrayed.
THIS was the show I had been defending all these years?! It was trash! People were right, GT WAS an insult to the franchise... it was an insult to me as a fan, as someone who loves this series.
And I feel this way because it feels like the series is specifically designed to annoy me. The first saga is a boring slog where it feels like nothing of actual value happens after our heroes leave earth, all for a stupid contrived premise. The only really notable episode is episode 15, and for ALL the wrong reasons! Goku is turned into a kid for no reason, which just feels wrong at this point in the series, Pan is derailed into an annoying brat for no good reason, and the only other character that comes along for the journey is Trunks. Who is one of the few characters I don't really care that much about, and he's blander here than he was in DBZ.
We get one half-decent story after that, one horrible trainwreck of an arc that did NOTHING right apart from a funny gag with Chichi and Videl, and a saga that sounds on paper like it should be the greatest thing in the world... but everything apart from Nuova and Eis Shenron's episodes was handled in the WORST WAY POSSIBLE.
The fights range from passable, occasionally good, to just BORING. While there were good jokes sometimes, the humour was usually dull. The many characters I loved either barely showed up and then only to get fodderised, have a lot of their personality drained away so they're just kind of dull, or in the cases of Piccolo and Majin Buu, get POINTLESSLY KILLED OFF! And in Piccolo's case he got shoved into freaking Hell for his troubles and never got out! What were you thinking, writers! That is NOT how you treat one of the greatest anime characters ever created!
Everything I felt could have potential to be interesting felt like it was deliberately sabotaged. Uub was shoved aside in the first episode and didn't show up until it was half over, and then despite getting a transformation all he does is have a fight with Baby that's way too short and anti-climactic and then stall the villain later on in the saga, otherwise he's so insignificant to the show he might as well never show up.
I always thought his character was very interesting and I wanted to see him be at least the co-protagonist and actually do stuff... and GT just bent over backwards to make him irrelevent, give him almost no personality or real purpose, and just generally undermine the entire point of the ending of Z...
Pan got off almost worse. She was never allowed to go super saiyan, only useful a few times throughout the show and didn't defeat anyone that mattered on her own. She got no real character development, and was mostly just a damsel in distress... because the writers LITERALLY ADMITTED that they only kept her around so she could get beat up by the villains so Goku could look better by comparison. But oh I've already made some long posts on how badly Pan was used, so I won't go on now.
Bulla and Marron barely existed as far as the show was concerned. Krillin was basically a prop that was there to be a butt monkey who disappoints his family in the Baby saga, and his only notable contribution to the story was to DIE to move the plot along.
Android 17... oh God, the poor guy. He barely had any personality left when he showed up inexplicably under Dr Gero and Myuu's mind control, that whole Super 17 fusion was stupid as all heck, and then they senselessly killed his character off for real without ever doing ANYTHING of interest with him in a really insulting manner.
Despite the brilliant premise of having all the past villains invade from hell, the show did NOTHING with ANY of them, apart from turning Frieza, my favourite villain of all time, and Cell, into a couple of jokes who are defeated in an embarrassing way.
As cool as the Shadow Dragons are in concept, not only does their explanation and build up make no sense, but only Nuova and Eis are worthwhile characters. Haze and Rage Shenron were absolutely pathetic, Oceanus Shenron felt like a monster of the week from an earlier point in the series and not suitable endgame villain material, Naturon Shenron was annoying and lost because he was the BIGGEST IDIOT in the entire franchise, and Omega Shenron was the most disappointing final boss possible with no personality beyond "Evil bad guy" and a dull final fight that just poorly rips off stuff that happened in the Buu Saga, as well as that one episode that was just pointless padding that existed to tease people who liked Nuova Shenron by bringing him back only to have his contribution mean nothing (Kind of like how Vegeta going super saiyan 4 meant nothing thanks to Gogeta being a time wasting idiot and Vegeta not even putting up a half-decent fight against Omega).
And besides that, there were only two new characters in the show besides Nuova (Who was killed off way too soon, IMO) and Eis (The only character used as well as he could have been, probably) that were any good, them being Baby and General Rilldo. And Baby devolves into discount Frieza with none of the charm halfway through his saga, and Rilldo only gets a mediocre at best fight and then gets a bridge unceremoniously dropped on him.
And apart from them? Giru/Gill was an occasional nuisance and as interesting as drying paint. Valese was awkward and pointless, Dolltaki was the WORST character in the franchise, Dr Myuu/Mu was a boring dollar store Dr Gero with a stupider moustache and nothing interesting to him at all, and none of the other few characters were anything worthwhile.
And it's not like the show did a lot of interesting stuff with the characters it already had, half the characters are barely around, with several being only silent cameos, and they don't get any development from when we last saw them. Even 18's highly touted contribution in the Super 17 saga just involved her conveniently showing up to shoot energy blasts at Super 17, allowing Goku to then do all the hard work necessary to defeat him. It was kinda cool, but it was barely anything and it still comes at the expense of wasting 17 completely.
And then that ending... that above all insulted me, because after the show went out of it's way to wreck up so many of the characters, and treat us to mediocre to horrible stories, destroy any of the potential that Dragon Ball Z left open for future stories... after all that, it had the GALL to offer up what it intended to be the definitive, no going back ending for the ENTIRE series... an ending that was out of nowhere, depressing, and overall just kind of pointless... I was so angry.
THIS SHOW... this show is the reason we went so long without another Dragon Ball series for almost two decades, outside of Kai being just a re-cut of Z. And it went out of it's way to be the worst possible send off for the franchise imaginable, and try to cut off all avenues for future series.
I was so angry over this! All those years wistfully longing to have Dragon Ball come back... all those years that I felt incomplete, like I'd lost my anchor to make life feel more bearable when things got bad... like I didn't have a lot to look forward to... all of that was GT's fault, and it was TERRIBLE to boot!
And I DEFENDED this show all that time, because I was just so clueless... I felt sick.
And yes, I know I can't blame GT for how bad life got for me, that's childish... but I really do feel like having a little hope that Dragon Ball would continue with more series would have helped through it.
Dragon Ball is not just a show or manga to me. It is my favourite media franchise of all time. The series, it's characters and it's world resonate with me like nothing else. Nothing makes me happier than watching Dragon Ball, nothing else gets me more excited. The magic I felt watching the show as a kid is something I have yet to experience from any other work of fiction, despite trying my hardest to find it elsewhere in the time since. Maybe Pokemon comes close, but it's not quite there.
Dragon Ball is an integral part of my life. And GT tried to rip it away from me. To torch the franchise and run, as tv tropes would put it.
That is why I was so happy to have Super come into my life.
Dragon Ball Super is not a perfect series, as I have stated many times before. It has plot holes, inconsistent animation quality, especially earlier on. It occasionally screws up writing certain characters like Vegeta or Goku (Even though I don't think the latter's portrayal overall is anywhere near as bad as people blow it out of proportion to be), and there are plenty of missed opportunities. The Future Trunks Saga's ending was a complete mess, some of the things it introduced didn't really pay off. It has problems...
But at the same time, it's given me more joy than any other series of the past decade. Because when Super is good... oh my God, is it good.
The best fights from Super are honestly some of my favourites in the entire franchise. Goku vs Hit, the big fight with Goku Black and Future Zamasu in episode 57, Gohan vs Lavender, Gokus first fight with Jiren, Android 18 beating Ribrianne... there are SO many good ones, and the best are so much better than any of GT's action scenes. Heck, just watching the clip of the last bout of the fight between Goku, Frieza and Android 17 against Jiren did more for me than the entire final battle against Omega Shenron did.
There are so many good jokes and funny episodes, I think I've laughed more watching Super than any other Dragon Ball series. The slice of life episodes and moments scattered throughout are wonderful, and give me such an unbelievably pleasant feeling. We see so much more of the supporting cast too, and while the show struggles with a lot of characters especially early on, they all ended up getting so much good character moments over the course of the show and especially in the final arc. It was so wonderful just to spend more time with everyone.
There were so many cool new concepts thrown in. The 12 universes, the integration of the Galactic Patrol from the Jaco manga, the super dragon balls.
And there were so many new characters that I'm actually interested in.
Obviously we have Beerus, Whis and Jaco carrying on from the recent movies, and I love them so much. But in Super we got to meet Hit, Champa, Vados, Cabba, Frost, Magetta, Goku Black, Caulifla, Toppo, Ribrianne, and so many awesome and intersting new characters, many of whom I desperately want to see fleshed out and get to do more in future series. I didn't care about anyone from GT NEARLY as much as I care about half of these new characters, except maybe Nuova.
There's just so many amazing things that have happened that I never dreamed I would experience.
I never thought Android 17 would not only come back and be developed more, but that he'd go on to be one of the best characters in the show and one of my new favourites. I never thought Frieza would make a big comeback either, but oh God was he so perfect in the Universe Survival Saga and I think I love him even more now than I already did! I never thought I'd see Master Roshi getting to be cool again and have what felt like an even better send off to his time as a martial artist than the original Dragon ball gave him, but oh lord was episode 105 so good and got me emotional.
I never even knew I wanted Pan the adorable super baby to be a thing, but oh God is she wonderful and perfect in every way and I just love her so much! Ahhh!
Already I have so many fond memories of watching Super. Sure, it's done things to upset me from time to time, but when it's good, and it is most of the time, it does more for me than most other shows I watch. When Super is at it's best, I feel the same magic that Dragon Ball Z made me feel as a child.
A feeling I never once got from watching GT.
And as much as I panicked when I heard the show was ending, we got confirmation soon after that Super would continue through the upcoming movie, and all signs pointed to a new Dragon Ball series being produced in the near future. When the final episode aired, I felt a great sense of satisfaction in how it concluded... and also excitement and hope for the future, because that last episode made it so clear that there was much more to come.
Dragon Ball GT's ending threw me out of the house, slammed the door in my face and flushed the keys down the toilet. But Super left the door open.
It wasn't a goodbye this time. It was a "See you later"
A promise from my oldest, most dear friend that we would meet again.
It was such a beautiful feeling. And I cannot wait to see what the future holds for Dragon Ball. I'm sure there'll be bad stories now and again, every franchise has those from time to time, but Toei seem to be making all the right moves to get things stable to better produce future dragon ball works. The movie seems like it's having a ton of effort put into it, at least. So I have faith. Now my dream where Dragon Ball can go on forever might finally be coming true, and I couldn't be happier.
And after all is said and done, looking back on GT... I can't help but resent it for trying to deny me that.
I can't help but hold GT responsible for all of the years where there were no new Dragon Ball series. All the years it felt like Dragon Ball would never come back for real. And for all the loneliness that caused me deep in my heart.
It had some good points. Bad as it truly was, I can't say it was the worst sequel or show ever produced, there are many works of fiction that are objectively far worse than GT, and stuff that has caused actual harm to the world.
It'll never be One More Day or Holy Terror levels of bad... but on a strictly personal level, GT causes me more anger than any other fictional work I have encountered.
Why did I bother watching it again? That was a question I found myself asking as I was binging the subbed version. Obviously the reason I started doing that was because I have a personal goal of watching each Dragon Ball series both dubbed and subbed, and I thought I might as well get GT out of the way since I'd watched it all dubbed not too long ago... but why did I keep going as quickly as I did, when watching it just caused me so much frustration to the point of feeling actually painful?
I don't fully know, but maybe deep down I just really wanted to convince myself that I was being too harsh. That it wasn't all that bad, that I could go back to liking it somewhat. Because I really didn't want to resent it so much.
Guess that didn't work out, since honestly I think the only thing it accomplished is making me all the more aware of why I dislike it.
But you know what... whatever. I could keep being angry about GT until I'm blue in the face, but it's really not worth it. Because it's not relevant anymore. As much as it still bothers me we don't have another series set post-EoZ yet, GT has officially been replaced regardless by Super. It's clear that the franchise is back, and here to stay. Hopefully for good, this time. So really, what do I have left to be worried about?
I've got what I wanted all this time. GT's attempt to end Dragon Ball failed, the story goes on. And now that I've watched it both ways, I have no reason to ever come back to GT, or worry about it ever again. I have closure.
The show is still there for people who do enjoy it, for whatever reasons I'll never be able to relate to again. But I'm free from having to worry about it getting in the way of more Dragon Ball stories.
Now I have hope again, hope that a new Dragon ball series where Uub and Pan are treated with respect will happen down the line. Hope that I'll get to see more good character development and cool moments from all the characters I love. Hope that Launch might come back, or that underdeveloped characters might get to come back and be made a thousand times better like Android 17 was.
Here's to a bright future for Dragon Ball, the story that never ends.
And so, with all that out of the way... I guess it's time to say goodbye.
GT, you were a frustrating experience. I will admit, a part of me will always cherish those good childhood memories you gave me, even if they've been somewhat tainted. I will always love Super saiyan 4, and Nuova Shenron, and there's probably some good moments I might watch again through clips if I'm bored. I'll certainly listen to that english opening song again.
As bad as I make you out to be, in the end you weren't a complete disaster, since Dragon Ball ended up coming back anyway. And while I can never say I enjoyed watching you, part of me is glad there are others who feel differently, because people do deserve to be happy, even if I can't share the experience.
Because I'm not coming back. Because unless some exceptional circumstances happen, like I somehow become a big-name internet critic and I decide to review you for views, I highly doubt our paths will ever cross again. And I think that's for the best. I am sorry we grew apart so much, but I'm much happier where things are now.
Goodbye, GT. May your memory fade with time.
