Ero in un ufficio medico per fare un'ecografia alle mani, quando ho visto passare davanti a me una signora che io conosco. Anche lei aveva la mascherina, quindi non ho potuto fermarla per chiederle il nome. Da allora, non riesco a togliermi dalla testa questa persona. So che l'ho vista in qualche luogo pubblico, ma non riesco a ricordare dove. So che è una persona simpatica e gentile, ma non riesco a ricordare in che contesto l'ho incontrata. Uff! TRASCRIZIONE [ENG translation below] Questa mattina mi trovavo in un ufficio medico per fare un'ecografia alle mani perché ho quello che si chiama dito a scatto in tutte e due le mani, vabbè, non sto qui a tediarvi con i miei mali di vecchiaia. Siccome qui dentro gli ospedali, dentro gli studi medici, ancora spesso c'è l'obbligo della mascherina, avevo la mascherina che mi copriva metà della faccia. Mentre ero lì che aspettavo il mio turno, mi è passata davanti una signora che io conosco. Anche lei aveva la mascherina e però quella signora... Sapete, quando vedete una persona che conoscete e riconoscete immediatamente? Lei è passata dritta, quindi non mi ha visto, io ero seduta da una parte, e ho perso il momento, l'attimo per fermarla, ma cosa le avrei detto? Non lo so. Però è da stamattina che mi sto scervellando e non riesco a ricordare dove conosco questa persona perché non so il nome. Non so se vi sia mai capitato di riconoscere qualcuno e di sapere esattamente in che situazione è questa persona. Ecco, mi viene quasi da dire, la mamma di una mia compagna di scuola, ma alla mia età non ho mamme di compagni di scuola, però io vedo questa signora che ha i capelli grigi molto corti, è una persona che io associo a qualcosa di svelto, dinamico, veloce. Quindi non lo so, forse l'ho vista in qualche ufficio, ma e più che un ufficio, una persona che so, con cui ho parlato, una persona con cui abbiamo dialogato e ce l'ho in testa e adesso chissà se mai la incontrerò nella vita e le dirò, ma io lei l'ho vista! One piece whumplist (Dressrosa arc. Ep 629-737)

Whumpee: Trafalgar Law played by Hiroshi Kamiya. (Who is also the jap va for Levi in aot.)

Synopsis: One piece follows Luffy and his crew on his journey to find the ‘One piece’. A treasure left behind by the pirate king Gold D. Roger. On this journey he meets Law, a doctor who saves his life after a battle. After that they part ways. 2 years later they meet again on an Island named Punk-hazard. Here, Law asks Luffy to ally with him to take down a Warlord, one of the most powerful pirates in this world. But Law’s focus is more on a underground dealer under the alias ‘Joker’.

Law has a devil fruit called the op op fruit. This fruit gives him the ability to manipulate anyone or anything within a ‘room’ that he can create. This ability takes a toll on his stamina, and if overused, his lifeforce. This devil fruit also makes him unable to swim, and is ‘disabled’ when he comes into contact with ‘sea prism stone’.

Every Record I Own - Day 648: Ascendency Birth of an Eternal Empire

This is another album highlight of 2020.

At this rate, I’m still gonna be talking about records from 2020 in 2022. Honestly, my main problem is that I struggle to really articulate why I like a lot of new music. I like it on a purely gut level, whereas a lot of the older records I post here have a ton of personal memories associated with them, or they have some historical context that adds to their allure. But records in 2020? They were things to keep me entertained during the eternal Groundhogs Day of the pandemic. So moving forward, I’ll keep most of these 2020 album discussions short and to the point.

Today’s record is by Danish black metal band Ascendency. Birth of an Eternal Empire is a bit of a cheat as far as getting included in the 2020 round-up. It’s an EP composed of two even shorter EPs released on cassette in 2019. But this vinyl collection came out last year so I’m including it. This is a very riff-driven style of black metal, which I tend to prefer over the more melodic or atmospheric branches of the genre. Ascendency features members of Taphos, Hyperdontia, and Phrenelith---three excellent death metal bands. Given the propensity for quality riff craftsmanship in their other projects, it’s no surprise that Birth of an Eternal Empire is laden with solid hooks, tight musicianship, and well-crafted songs. It’s a ripper.
