At some point I want to write a whole thing about how Hunter is a complete deconstruction of the Mentor Figure. I often think about how he's definitely set up like one initially and then proceeds to teach Omega essentially jack shit because he never had any idea what's going on. Hunter cannot mentor he doesn't know how that works, he confronts every issue with the sullen weight of someone that needs an adultier adult but knows that there isn't one available.

#the bad batch #if anyone is the mentor in this show its actually Omega she's the one changing people's outlooks on things #tech has moments of mentoring her but past the actual act of teaching the Emotional moments between them #are more figuring out things together on equal terms than him Mentoring her in the traditional fashion #but Hunter is definitely not the mentor he is Confused #i think about this a lot because sometimes people suggest Hunter will suffer a Traditional Mentor Death #which is possible but i don't think it fits into his character because it wouldn't serve Omega's arc #because i just don't think he occupies that exact place in her mind #theres a lot twisted up about the traditional archetypes purely by the fact that she's technically the oldest

though to be clear i dont think half of what roxy makes would be considered edible by any conventional definition i think that alpha rose in a fit of strider irony gene induced madness compiled every godawful gelatin themed recipe and every godawful gelatin mold she could find and that young roxy took these to be a sincere indication of what her mother enjoyed. i think she would cook the most revoltingly fifties advertisement concoctions possible and she'd be completely sincere about them.

And the first thing that comes to his mind while dealing with emotional anguish? That this is his fault, that his 'curse' got the better of him.

Not that his mentor who he trusted unconditionally is plotting some dark shit. That he (if in the active party) went through Horrors™ in Commorragh. And not that he had to somehow...deal (the inquisition way...) with his oldest friend.

He finally reached his fucking limit and snapped, accidentally killing a man (possibly first time outside of his control? that's another thing altogether).

He never learned to deal with his emotions, just to suppress them and now he thinks he's dying because he feels so much at once, I- 😭

the most important zane character trait to me isn’t that he’s a robot, but that he, fundamentally, is new to it. he’s bad at being a robot. he’s constantly finding out new things about himself and what he can do and excitedly showing them off to his friends like a kid with a new toy. he spent the most important part of his life (in his opinion, bc it’s when he met his friends and started pursuing being a protector) not understanding anything about himself and now he’s constantly discovering something new and it’s so important to me that he’s not reduced to just “the robot guy”. pixal is the one who being a robot comes naturally to, zane is the one who is permanently stuck between human and artificial and at this point is thriving there
