Hi! I’m James, and this is my blog :^) I’ve been writing Death Note fanfiction since 5ever and this is a whole list of my OVER 50 Death Note fics.

This is a combination of my two AO3 accounts. I have all fics with trans characters marked with a T. For avoidfilledwithcelluloid, I have fics marked E if they’re explicit. Didn’t do that for my other account, coprinus_atramentarius, because all of those fics are explicit. Most of this is Lawlight, but there’s also Mikalight, Remisa, LMisa, just to name a few others. The supreme intellect, the cameras and wire taps he’ll happily dumb around someone’s house, the absolute lengths he’ll go to to get what he wants. He’d be so obsessive and brilliant, there would be no escaping that man

THERE LITERALLY WOULDNT OMFG

Once he’s got his eyes on you, your whole house is bugged. When he catches a break from his current case, he’ll entertain himself by watching you in your day-to-day life. It’s no big deal for him to get footage from security cameras at your local shops, easily excused under the guise of top-level police evidence. He’ll scoff down a sundae as he criticises your food choices at the grocery store. He’ll chomp down on vanilla wafers whilst watching you make your bed after a rough night’s rest (once he’s taken you, he’ll provide you with a better one, he decides). If you’re going on a rant over the phone or humming an improvised tune, he’ll go for something less crunchy, like a nice slice of strawberry shortcake. The only time he’s not eating is when he’s watching you shower.

Once he’s got you, you’re observed to hell. If you thought the bugs in your house were a violation, then you should see how many cameras are installed just in the shower. You have a sneaking suspicion that the mirror above the sink is two-way. Conversations are an absolute drag, full to the brim with teasing - from him, that is. Your words are objectively far too malicious to be called that.

The chances of escaping are basically zero. He’s shown to be pretty athletic and strong, so just running away would be a feat in itself. But to hide from him (and the entire police force, for that matter) is a whole other beast. If you’re seriously hard to find, he’ll just put out a wanted notice for you. Now everyone in the world is searching for you.

But let’s be honest, the chances of successful escape are basically zero whilst he’s alive. And if you somehow manage to kill him, well that means you’ve committed a crime. The response from the police and the public would be the exact same, but you wouldn’t be able to justify it as him manipulating them - it’s simply the punishment that anyone would get if they were driven to commit such a crime.

(He might also joke that if you try to escape, he’ll enlist Eraldo Coil to look for you hehe)

In honour of yotsuba death day - how well (or how badly) do you think each of the other seven would have handled the death note had they been chosen by Rem instead of Higuchi?

GOOD QUESTION. i've pondered this some...

namikawa would... um... namikawa is a very composed person, but i think being approached by a literal shinigami would be so far outside the realm of probability in his life that he'd kind of dissociate his entire way through the interaction. none of this really shows externally, though; he comes off as pretty collected. although namikawa doesn't have any moral qualms with killing people for his own benefit, i think his ego would prevent him from just accepting the notebook. namikawa doesn't need to stoop to murder to achieve his goals, and this shinigami needs to know it, goddammit.

if he was under the impression that turning rem down would end in him dying, though, he'd just take it and use it for self-gain while he's at it. i want to say he'd do decently well, but then i remember "for someone to trace this back to us, they'd have to be a god"... he's definitely more reserved in his killing patterns than higuchi, but he still blackmails the police and tries to catch L. inevitably he gets too confident and gets himself arrested/killed, but he'd last longer than higuchi.

ooi would immediately accept the death note with no questions and use it for yotsuba's benefit, but i think he'd genuinely view it as a service to the company rather than selfish murder. he would last the longest out of any of the yotsubas simply because he's a combination of genuinely intelligent and maybe just slightly batshit, and that means that he'd be difficult to predict for a while. considering ooi directs the meetings, i don't think he'd stray that far from the group's plan of action in the manga proper, but when it comes to a confrontation between him and the L team, it's a wild ride. also, um, he's better with a gun than higuchi. there might be some casualties here. maybe someone even gets bombed, who knows!

mido would initially panic and then get herself under control enough to tell rem that she Does Not Want It. she at least knows that murder is bad, and besides, i don't think she'd be motivated enough to use it. she cares about personal advancement, sure, but not at this expense. if she felt threatened into it, she'd give it a shot, but i don't think she'd do much killing for self-benefit. she might start trying to take L out, but honestly i think she'd eventually break down and insist on giving rem the death note back.

takahashi would also panic when rem shows up. i don't even think he'd consider the possibility that he might be killed if he refuses, he'd just. give the damn thing back. rem would have to outright threaten to kill him to get him to do it (which i don't really think she'd do), and after that, i think he'd be too scared to use it on anyone who isn't a criminal. he'd turn himself in to the police in, like, two days. which... would make it significantly harder for light's plan to succeed... yay?

shimura would also panic and refuse to take it. if threatened, he'd just kill criminals, but he'd put some thought into how to evade L. if he kept going indefinitely, he honestly might be able to get away without getting caught just because he's so cautious and has no desire to kill L... but he just doesn't have it in him. he'd reach a breaking point, insist on giving it back to rem, and threaten to just kill himself if she doesn't take it.

kida would freak the fuck out but i think he'd ultimately take the death note. i think he'd use it for personal reasons, but not quite in the same way as higuchi did. namely, i think he'd kill mido out of petty spite (and have a bit of a crisis over it afterwards, but he makes himself keep going anyway). he'd be smart enough not to kill too many people who can be directly tied to him or yotsuba, but he'd still try to contact eraldo coil to investigate L, and we all know how that'd go. when he figures out that L is closing in, though, he probably decides to give the death note up. not that that saves him from arrest.

hatori insists that he's being pranked for a while, then figures out that rem is a real shinigami and sits there with his head in his hands for a minute or two. he very quickly copes by deciding that this is Cool And Fun, actually, and he can be like a superhero! he'd probably kill a few people for personal gain, but i think he'd see a few too many headlines about kira worshipers and start to get a little bit too into it... he goes through periods of despair where he thinks he's definitely going to get caught and die, and then he goes through periods of elation where he thinks he's really helping people and eventually everyone will realize that and love him.

he doesn't really do anything smart with it, and eventually i think he'd crack under the pressure and tell someone. shimura, maybe? or ooi? shimura would make him give it back to rem, and ooi would offer him counsel. which means he'd inevitably end up in charge of operations, so things would go similarly to the ooi option, except there's the possibility that ooi doesn't get caught and killed like hatori does. in which case... he probably just carries on with his life.

i should note that mido, takahashi, shimura, kida, and hatori all probably look like shit and act super on edge during their scenarios. lots of interpersonal drama probably ensues...

let it be known that i don't think rem would choose any of the other yotsubas, even if higuchi just didn't exist as an option. they're all pretty greedy, but not in the same outwardly scummy way. there are definitely worse people out there for rem to choose. there are also a lot of variables, so none of these are set in stone. definitely a fun hypothetical!

HIIII omfg so this is going to sound so deranged but my wife and I have been RPing them for like literally ages so my brain is clearly very mushy and tainted from this. I don’t know why I feel like I’m about to give a presentation in front of the class or why I’m worried about posting anything on the celibate radiator Mello blog but. LOL. Anyway. *pulling up my powerpoint* ← no but fr you know I’m serious because I’m typing this up on the computer instead of mobile (hence no cute queen Mello emojis).

So I know lots of people focus on Mello’s rivalry with Near as some sort of obsession with Near. I’m not going to go all pepe silvia here but I personally read Mello’s drive as being more narcissistic lol. He wants to be number one → and in his mind, this position is L. They are synonymous. The current L isn’t his competition, but rather the one to impress. Near is just the one who’s threatening to take this thing he wants very badly away from him, and/or (in Mello’s perception, at least) rubbing it in his face/flaunting his position. This really childish anger and cruelty he harbors towards Near is illustrated (TO MEEE) when Mello first gets the notebook and wipes out most of the SPK. ← was a dirt poor kid who beat up a rich girl that pissed me off bc she was always rubbing it in my face so. Yk projection and all.

Anyway, Mello really doesn’t seem to have a desire to be L in the sense of the actual role—his behavior seems really uncharacteristic of somebody who would be able to cooperate with the world’s law enforcement. But I also see him as having absorbed the lessons at Wammy’s on a surface level → he heard them say “yeah, and then L had to kidnap—“ but never heard/ignored the “it was a sort of last-resort deal, please don’t do this.”

Back to the point, (is there a point?) the LABB book (idgaf it’s canon so suck my left nut about it) tells us that they only ever had one conversation, during which L recounted the LABB case, the final fight between L and the real Eraldo Coil and Deneuve, and how L first met Watari when he was eight. ← I think Mello tracked L’s cases religiously. If he found out L was working on a case (which was rare, because details were under wraps, but he was good at sneaking around and eavesdropping on Roger’s calls with Watari), he would try to figure out every little detail he could, just hoping he could somehow help him out. He never did, but that didn’t mean he didn’t try. I also think it was sweet that he would have told Mello about meeting Watari/that Mello would have been interested/how it would have come up. Not in a ship way, but just in a noodle incident way.

Since this is obviously only plausible in the everybody-survives post-kira AU, I always like to think they first meet in-person then, since I imagine their one and only canon conversation was over a computer (as this is how L seems to have most of his interactions throughout the series lol). Mello definitely has a huge crush (but I don’t even want to call it that cause it’s really just a tangle of very confused feelings wires that are all crossed) but he doesn’t even know what L is like at all → it’s a crush on the concept of his existence. I’ve said this before but I think everybody has somebody they would embarrass themselves for and just as Matt would do for Mello, Mello would do for L. It’s not that Mello wouldn’t do a lot for Matt, but rather that he wants to impress L the same way Matt wants to impress him. L has no idea how to perceive Mello/has only heard horrible reports from Roger back at Wammy’s and is pretty concerned that he was blackmailing presidents and taking Kira’s sister hostage. T_T but at the same time, there’s a very small sliver of L that admires this insanity? ← recalling the oneshot (but erasing the human washing machine because I really think they just were sick of our asses atp) L was also a kind of violent and troubled kid that beat on other kids for trying to hug him LOL. I think L has a very strange and sadistic streak the fandom likes to play down in favor of focusing on his cutely autistic stare (which is also very important) but Mello and Near are supposed to represent the two halves of his coin so I think he’d be intrigued by Mello’s motives/methods? Maybe (read: definitely) not approving, but still perhaps a bit impressed by what he managed to pull off. Neither of them knows what to think of the other, cue 1million word slow burn.

I could keep rambling but at this point I’m approaching 1k and I’m getting very worried. LMFAO. I really want to write some of this ^ cuter/softer/pretending to be semi-canon BS (when I say cute I just mean nobody gets kidnapped/I don’t spend 10k describing horrific burns btw) so hopefully you’ll be interested and check that out when I get around to it. :>

Also re-reading and saw that I talked so so much and said virtually nothing I have to be completely self-indulgent and drop some cute post-Kira LMello fluff things bc I love my beautiful perfect wifey <333

+ They play a lot of chess and go, but Mello prefers checkers ← it’s faster, L is way better at go than he is, and L takes 20 minutes for every move in chess if they don’t play with a timer. L always plays black (obviously). I know you’re all going to ignore my sexual checkersposting but Mello tries to balance playing as fast as possible (needs L to know he’s soooo smart) and being as aggressive as possible (needs L to know he’s so strong and cool) ← this is the only way he can win btw. Playing insanely and not thinking too hard. If he follows any common strategies, L can easily counter them. Instead, he just pretends he’s playing with troops like a military general and chases L’s pieces around the board, trying to split them up/corner him/overwhelm him as quickly as possible. It’s pretty rare but when L says “good move.” Well. I shan’t say more.

+ They definitely go to tons of cafes/restaurants and only have desserts/drink fruity wine. Mello loves eating expensive food and L doesn’t necessarily mind being dragged places, even though he would normally just have Watari deliver them to him instead.

+ Mello helps L on cases, but only sometimes. L doesn’t know where he goes when he’s gone, but he always comes back within the week, even if it’s only for a day. ← once and a while he’ll break in through a back door and sneak past L’s cameras just to critique his security systems. L really hates when he does this (shows up silently behind him in a dark room lit by TVs like a serial killer). But he does take the advice to heart and always corrects the problem.

I am once again thinking of how we never actually see the name that killed L, just his legal name in "Death Note: How to Read".

I'm thinking of Rem ripping out the pages in her death note she'd written on as she turns to dust, taking too the only written instance of name that killed the world's greatest detective, quite possibly as one last act of defiance against Light Yagami. Thinking of how if she hadn't, Light would have read the final name she'd written, kept inside him the knowledge that he's one of the only humans alive to keep the name that L felt was *his* at the day he died. Sure, he could've just attached hard to how he wanted to remember L, but it doesn't take away the fact that it feels as if he *doesn't* know L's name (because with all the focus he had on finding it out it doesn't erase the care he put into finding it)

I'm thinking of L, who's never really identified himself with a name. Not his legal name, given to him by his guardian, nor any of his number of aliases. He might as well have been L Lawliet just as much as he was the detective L, or Eraldo Coil, or Deneuve, or even his brief stint as Hideki Ryuga. He's been called so many names in his life, but doesn't identify with any of them. I'm thinking of the fact that Near and Mello clearly identify themselves as their legal names despite their similar use of aliases, the way that their legal names are explicitly the names needed to kill them. However, with L, we never see his legal name written down in the note nor do we get to see the name floating above his head. Unlike others from a similar background, we don't know the name that killed him, nor does he seem to identify with his legal name.

Of course, this brings up exactly what the name had killed him was, and if it simply was his legal name, why it wasn't just shown as with other characters. For someone who couldn't seem to form an attachment around any of the many names they've been called, I almost wonder if the name that killed him was something secret, played around with in his head, something only he (and someone with the eyes of course) would know.

I realized I hadn't posted these pieces of meta before, so I think it's about as good a time as any to talk about Tobias' life post-L's death. To start with, L's death is a secret even at Wammy's House, or at least it was for a while (Roger only told Near & Mello about this). However, I'm sure the lettered children who have to work with L after "graduating" from the orphanage are eventually told about it (there's canonly a secret network only the lettered children have access to, through which they receive orders from Watari/later Roger), if only to make sure they won't give their services to someone who's taken L's mantle without having been appointed to it (coughs. Light), which is also why Light never knew about Wammy's House before talking to Near.

I'm also sure most of the orphans felt some sort of negative emotion upon learning about L's death (whether it was grief, anger or disappointment) but Tobias couldn't have been happier about this development. While he didn't particularly care about L one way or the other (and certainly didn't want to become him), he did feel slightly uneasy while L was still the world's best detective, because he didn't know L well enough to predict his actions and he had taken the path of a criminal, which could've well landed him in prison or worse if something he did had caught L's interest. On the other hand, L's death was joyous news. Not only because he thought none of the successors were individually as gifted as L (and Mello being too prideful to calmly work alongside Near was common sense), but also because he knew and was friends with the both of them. Whether it was Mello or Near who became L, it didn't matter to him. What mattered is that he could create a connection that would prevent him from landing in jail no matter what he does. With this in mind, it's been a fact on this blog for a while that Tobias keeps in touch with and sometimes even aids the orphans he's known at Wammy's House, and that includes Mello and Near.

After L's and Mello's deaths and Near's "official" appointment as the second L, Tobias offers him his services, even though they're on different sides of the "good vs evil" debacle. What this means is that as long as Near doesn't go out of his way to hunt him down, Tobias will use his network and connections to help Near with his cases, whether it'd be through information, funding or force. Furthermore, the end of the manga and its sequels never bring up L's secondary and tertiary aliases, namely "Eraldo Coil" and "Deneuve" again, so it's probably safe to say that Near rarely if ever uses them, unlike L.

With this in mind, I'll say that Tobias made a deal with Near to obtain Deneuve's name, under the pretext that it'll allow him to at least partly do what he was brought up to do, re: catch criminals and use his genius for justice. In truth, it's moreso an acquisition made with self-interest in mind. It allows Tobias to attain an even wider network, this time on the side of governments, agencies, etc while simultaneously keeping an eye on what his enemies/rivals are doing and keeping his end of the deal with Wammy's House as an institution. With Deneuve being known as the third best detective in the world, there are also less chances of people coming to Deneuve to unmask L's identity (that'd typically fall on Eraldo Coil, which is a persona Near still owns), but on the off-chance that they do he can simply tell Near about it. Tobias isn't too thrilled about detective work, but with Deneuve being a side-gig rather than his main job, and with all of the benefits this identity brings him, he does keep his end of the bargain and goes out of his way to solve cases from time to time, when he's bored or when a case someone's contacted him with piques his interest or otherwise has something to do with himself.

At least half of what he owns atm is due to that luck #Without Wammy's House he would've had far less knowledge and connections than he does rn #and he'd have also had to be 24/7 on his toes about /both/ his rivals and the 'heroes' of justice #as things stand though? He's friends with THE face of justice and has a way of finding out info that'd normally be kept hidden from him #so he only really needs to keep an eye on his rivals; which allows him to do all the partying he wants on the side LMFAO
