I'm super proud to share the music video for Nummer 2, taken from Anne Müller debut album Heliopause. The record is published by Erased Tapes.

I co-directed this with @simon-duong under our new directing duo name Faux Soleil. This project took us countless months to craft and I hope you'll enjoy it's meditative nature as well as Anne's powerful music.

It has recently been selected as a Vimeo Staff Pick! I want to address my deepest thanks to all the artists and producers at Eddy and Brunch Studio who helped us bring this to life. I also want to thank Erased Tapes and Anne for trusting us with this larger than life music video.

Rain Before Seven... by Penguin Cafe

Penguin Café is the expansive instrumental ensemble founded by Arthur Jeffes, the son of Simon Jeffes who headed the similarly named and configured Penguin Café Orchestra until his death in 1997. The group masses a string chamber orchestra—two violins, a viola, cello and bass—alongside keyboards and percussion.

Like its predecessor (with which it shares no members), Penguin Café skirts the edges of classical music, post-modern minimalism, folk and world traditions. It blends the swoon of swelling strings with the antic play of polyrhythmic cadences, executing sprightly gambols in difficult time signatures. Listen and you’ll feel a smile tugging at the corner of your mouth. The music is rigorous but fun.

The opening salvo, “Welcome to London,” skitters into view on a joint-knocking beat, strings dipping and whirling in agitated swoops, a piano rippling in and around the rhythm like water in a reedy stream. The cut is very soundtrack-y; you can picture it accompanying purposeful motion, our protagonist optimistic but nervy. The strings turn smooth and soothing over percolating percussion and piano, and a melodica drifts in from somewhere non-western and mysterious. The whole thing is busy, diverse, multicultural, its parts jarring against one another and yet finding some kind of energetic concord—in other words very much like London.

Some tracks are moody, as for instance “Second Variety,” but the prevailing tone is euphoric lightness. “In Re Budd” doesn’t overtly refer to the minimalist composer, except perhaps in its use of piano and malleted percussion. Instead it seems to reach for an island breeziness, the drums taking on the tonal reverberation of steel drums. “Galahad” memorializes Jeffes now deceased dog, but there’s not a bit of sadness in it. Instead a piano figure hurtles forward like a puppy chasing a ball, and a steady percussive thwack sounds like a tail thumping.

The disc takes its title from a country axiom “Rain before seven, fine by 11,” an assurance that no matter how gloomy the skies may turn, things will look up again before long. This disc, written during the pandemic, stubbornly insists on happiness even when the world is threatening. It’s a brave stance and a worthy one — and it might just make you happy, too.
