Who is she?
A supersoldier? A barfly? An environmentalist icon?
The Erdman chair was born the Emeco Navy Chair in 1944 in Hanover, Pennsylvania, USA. The US Navy had commissioned her father, Wilton Carlyle Dinges, to create a supersoldier. Or at least a chair who could survive the Navy’s constant exposure to moisture, salt, and “the occasional torpedo blast.”
After her sheer indestructability turned hazardous to the company business model, she started working at bars and hotels, whoever her sleek looks and alluring call could seduce.
Now the Erdman chair is part of a push for long-lasting products made from sustainable materials. I swear I’m not paid by the company I just think this is so cool.

Derek & Ashley’s cool Chicago apt. is full of Derek’s colorful art and a fair amount of unique decor.
The large watch Derek bought on eBay. “You can get them relatively affordably,” he says, “especially if they don’t work, like ours.”
The vintage pencil bookends and the pencil lamp were gifts from Ashley to Derek for a very pencil-themed birthday.
Derek’s office, at one end of the apt., is where he is most of the time. “It’s really comfortable and full of things that I love,” he says.
Two cool bookshelves and some of their collected things.
Derek’s great case for open kitchen shelving: “Not having to open a cupboard is one less thing to do in life.” I don’t know, when you take the doors off cabinets, they don’t look like shelving, they just look like cabinets w/o doors.
“I love the dining room/living room combo,” says Ashley. When she’s not at work, she’s working in the kitchen, b/c it’s full of light.
They have an impressive collection of art.
Derek made all the art in the bedroom.
“I bought the pink and wood drawer chair from a guy on Craigslist who had an old prop warehouse in Seattle,” says Derek.
“We have a few fluorescent lights- some bobby pins and one that says ‘Candy,’ which is the exact one that is also used in the candy department at Nordstroms across the country,” says Derek.

Yvonne Rainer’s work This is the story of a woman who… was part of her 1973 program at the Theater for the New City, and was shown on three consecutive weekends on both Fridays and Saturdays, while her earlier film Lives of Performers (1972) was screened on each of the three Sundays. This is the story of a woman who… was a mixed-media work created for three performers: John Erdman, Shirley Soffer, and Yvonne Rainer herself. Soffer acted as the narrator of the play, which told the story of a couple, a man (Erdman) and a woman (Rainer), falling apart, eventually becoming estranged from each other.[1][2][3]
The otherwise empty theater space had a mattress, two chairs, a vacuum cleaner, and a suitcase as props. There was a microphone for the narrator and a tape recorder for recording speech. Pictures of the performers and their families, short fragments of film, and some texts were projected onto the back wall during the show. The movement material they performed was mostly taken from Rainer’s older pieces, such as Three Satie Spoons (1961), Inner Appearances (1972), and Trio A from The Mind Is A Muscle (1968). [4]
A year later, in 1974, based on This is the story of a woman who…, Yvonne Rainer made a film called Film about a woman who…, digging deeper into the themes of relationships, objectification, and the male gaze, once again taken loosely from autobiographical elements. It was one of Rainer’s first feature-length films, along with Lives of Performers.[5]
Rainer (b. 1934), as a dancer, choreographer and filmmaker, was also one of the founders of Judson Dance Theater in New York. Starting her career in dance, in the 1970s she shifted her attention to filmmaking—before finally returning to dance in the early 2000s.

We are concerned that at the highest levels of the University of Nebraska system, decisions involving the future of the University are being made without transparency or proper governance and under improper exertions of influence by the legislative and executive branches of the state government. We fear that financial hostage-taking by members of the state government will result in changes by the administration in the intellectual offerings of the University and opportunities for our students. We believe it is imperative to express our alarm now, before irrevocable damage is done to the mission of the university and the value it contributes to the state of Nebraska. We insist that no radical changes be undertaken in the administration, academic programs, allocation of funds, or support for campus initiatives without appropriate faculty governance, transparency, and respect for academic freedom, which are core values of a healthy university.
Members of the state legislature strongly tied to Governor Pete Ricketts, including senators Steve Halloran, Steve Erdman, and Tom Brewer, along with staff of anti-public-education nonprofits affiliated with Governor Ricketts, such as School Choice Lincoln, have leveraged a single campus interaction into a sustained attack on the University that has greatly surpassed the scope and import of the initial incident. These senators have called for an end to tenure, demanded further budget cuts, and have written a letter censuring the mission statement and curriculum of the Department of English. A number of that department’s faculty have since been aggressively targeted by sweeping open records requests made by the Governor’s allies, including a request that they turn over private email addresses and emails between the chair and faculty members who have publicly criticized members of the state government.

We insist that this mission be respected and that the alarming politicized interventions in the work of the university be condemned and resisted, rather than validated by our administration.
Any ideological interference in university business from members of the state government will be a major blow to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. It will diminish our reputation among our peer institutions in the Big Ten and have a detrimental impact on our ability to attract and retain world-class faculty, as well as to recruit and retain minoritized and underrepresented students, who will rightly fear that initiatives to welcome them and address their unique needs on campus will be characterized as hostile to the agenda of the overreaching state government.
We, the undersigned, expect our administration to stand for the values of the University of Nebraska, a large community of diverse people with diverse viewpoints, and the most significant institutional asset to the state of Nebraska. We understand this community as being committed to the pursuit of truth (wherever it may lead), to the inherent value of open discussion, and to the fundamental values of democracy and free expression. If the Governor or his surrogates in the legislature interfere with the intellectual freedom of the faculty, one of the state’s most precious resources will be squandered in a political power grab, as the quality of work at our university and the value of a degree from UNL will quickly decline. We insist that all levels of the administration respect the governance structures currently in place, and categorically reject political interference in the good work being done at our state’s flagship institution.

The 89th Academy Awards will telecast live from L.A.’s Dolby Theatre Sunday, hosted by late night’s Jimmy Kimmel and presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, recognizes excellence in cinematic achievements in the film industry as assessed by the Academy’s voting membership. But … and there always is one … there’s the rub.
The Oscars air on ABC, beginning at 7:30 p.m. CT and run to or past three-and-a-half hours. Prior to the Awards, there’ll be lots of glitz and glamour with the red carpet arrivals.
Compared to last year and its lack of diversity, this year it’s the difference of day v. night – with an overload of all sorts of diversity. To avoid another brouhaha, the Academy initiated numerous changes in the make-up of the committees and membership [increasing the youth or younger factor].
2016 was also a big year for indies – several of which made it into the Top Nine.
The Academy welcomes the nominees in 24 categories and presenters with these words: No matter who you are or where you live, movies bring us together. Through indelible, fearless performances you extraordinary actors help make it happen. And the world listens. [Bring to the screen your tired, your poor, your huddled masses and let it infuse them with buttered popcorn, Sno-caps, and ice-cold Coke.]
There’s a new prez and not all of Hollywoodland is pleased with DJT, so expect loud protests and anti-testimonials. Several stars have announced they won’t attend; however, by attending, they could make an impact and be heard worldwide.
The Oscars, live and on tape, are seen by an estimated 35 million worldwide. At press time, President Trump and Pope Francis haven’t been added to the presenter’s list or weighed in on the nominations – some of which must displease both.
The fate of Best Picture is in the hands of the Hollywood caucus. Leading the pack in nominations are “La La Land“ (Lionsgate) received a record-tying 14 (1950’s “All About Eve” – and 1997’s “Titanic“ also achieved this distinction). “Arrival” and “Moonlight” (A24/Plan B) came in second with eight.
Actress in a leading role will be the category where the winner could be anybody’s guess. There’s been so much hype about Emma Stone in “La La Land,” but Isabelle Huppert turned in a memorable performance in “Elle“ (Sony Pictures Classics), and the incredible Natalie Portman turned herself inside out to create a harrowing impersonation of “Jackie”(Fox Searchlight), our former first lady. Three-time Oscar winner Meryl Streep continued to break records with her 20th nomination (Best Actress, Supporting Actress) for “Florence Foster Jenkins.”
Over in the men’s category, Casey Affleck outshined older brother, rising to star status at the top of the pack with his extraordinary performance in Kenneth Lonergan’s “Manchester by the Sea“ (Amazon Studios).
Often it’s puzzling how nominators nominate. For instance, when she is billed as a co-star in bold lettering and carries at least, if not more, of the screen adaptation of August Wilson’s Tony and Drama Desk-winning Fences, starring the leads of the 2010 Broadway revival, Tony-nominated Denzel Washington and Viola Divas, how does two-time nominee (“Doubt,” “The Help“) Davis get regulated to the Supporting Actress category? And wasn’t Jeff Bridges an equal star with Ben Foster and Chris Pine in “Hell and High Water“?
Presenters will include: five-time Oscar nominee Amy Adams, Oscar winner Javier Bardem, Oscar winner Warren Beatty, Golden Globe winner Gael Garcia Bernal, Oscar winner Halle Berry, Oscar and Golden Globes winner Faye Dunaway, Oscar winner Leonardo DiCaprio, GG nominee Scarlett Johansson, Dwayne Johnson, Oscar nominee Felicity Jones, Oscar and Drama Desk winner Shirley MacLaine (seven nominations), David Oyelowo, Oscar and Tony winner Mark Rylance, two-time Oscar nominee Emma Stone, Oscar winner Charlize Theron, and Oscar and SAG winner and Golden Globe nominee Alicia Vikander.
Artists will be “Waitress“ composer [and soon-to-be-star of the musical] Sara Bareilles, performing the In Memoriam tribute. Auli’l Cravalho and Lin-Manuel Miranda will sing the nominated “How Far I’ll Go” from Animated nominee Moana, Rock’s John Legend, who was featured in nominated La La Land will perform “City of Stars” and “Audition (The Fools Who Dream),” Sting sings “The Empty Chair” from “Jim: The James Foley Story” (HBO); and Justin Timberlake will perform “Can’t Stop the Feeling” from “Trolls” (Dreamworks Animation).
Honorary Awards were bestowed to Jackie Chan, the Hong Kong martial artist; Oscar-winning British editor (“Lawrence of Arabia,” many more) who has four nominations; veteran casting director Lynn Stalmaster; and Frederick Wiseman, Emmy-winning documentarian and international theater director.
Oscar certainly hasn’t always been perfect, so you might anticipate an upset. “Citizen Kane,” now considered one of the greatest movies of all time, didn’t catch
on with audiences of its day, but it got a Best Picture nod – only to be outgunned by the Welsh mining drama “How Green Was My Valley“ Best Picture. Star Orson Welles co-wrote the screenplay with the great Herman J. Mankiewicz, but through some maneuver Welles got sold credit and, on winning, didn’t even have the largesse to mention, much less credit Mankiewicz [which may have marked the beginning of his slow downfall].
Could there be a tie as in 1969, when two Best Actress winners were announced: Katharine Hepburn/”The Lion in Winter“ and Barbra Streisand/ “Funny Girl.” With Hepburn absent, Streisand had the stage all to herself for her famous quip, “Hello, Gorgeous!”
Could there have been a more celebrated film and director in 1973 than Francis Ford Coppola and “The Godfather,” which captured Best Picture. However, it was Broadway’s Bob Fosse who grabbed the director gold for the screen adaptation of Best Picture nominee “Cabaret.”
The Academy Award, nicknamed “Oscar,” was first presented in 1929. Tickets were $5, 15 statuettes were awarded in a dinner ceremony that ran 15 minutes. The annual Awards were broadcast on radio in 1930; and first televised in 1953. Bob Hope became the host dejour. The Oscars are now seen live in more than 200 countries and can be streamed online.
