What's the appeal of Marleyan Erwin? Everytime I begin reading one of those fics, I'm unsure what I'm supposed to get from it. I'm not saying they're bad! Just that I have trouble figuring them out. I figured you might be able to shine a light on it, having been on the fandom longer.

I’m not sure I’m the best person to answer this because I tend to avoid Marley Erwin fics too.  What I will say though is that fics that portray a darker version of Erwin’s character are not at all uncommon.  They’ve been around since the dawn of the fandom and Marley Erwin is just one of the more recent manifestations of that trend. See also dark Ackerbond fics which have become popular recently, some of which I’ve really enjoyed.  

In the early days of the fandom, the manga and the anime gave us very little insight into Erwin’s character.  For a long time he appeared to be the archetype of the ruthless military commander who used people as pawns and thought nothing of throwing his soldiers’ lives away.  Callous ruthless Erwin was a pretty common trope at this time, particularly in Ereri fics.  As the series progressed and we really got to see the complexity of Erwin’s character and the depth of his relationship with Levi, a lot of writers followed suit with more nuanced sympathetic portrayals of Erwin’s character.  The dark Erwin tropes never quite went away though, and I think that’s at least partly due to the fact that he is such a complex well-written character.  There are so many sides to Erwin that I can understand why some writers want to push his characterisation to one extreme or the other, and Marley set fics provide a pretty obvious way to do that.  

Personally speaking, I’ve never been a huge fan of dark Erwin fics (he suffers enough in canon thank you very much). I tend to gravitate towards fics that stick more closely to canon characterisation, but that’s just my preference. The thing to remember about fanfic is that it doesn’t have to follow canon plot or characterisation. The whole point of fanfic, is that it’s supposed to be transformative. 

One thing I have noticed is that the further out we get from the end of the series, (it’s already two years since the manga ended), the more popular fanon characterisation has drifted from canon.  That's not a criticism, I think it's inevitable to some extent.  Once characters are “freed” from canon, authors perhaps feel they have more freedom to transform them in ever more creative ways.  After Midnight Sun, I remember someone (maybe even me, who knows 😅) saying “Erwin belongs to us now.”  

It’s also true that tropes come and go.  Each new influx of fans discovers these characters in their own way and develops their own tropes and headcanons.  If you stick around for long enough you tend to notice that different iterations of the same tropes come around time and again.  One of the reasons Marley Erwin fics don’t really appeal to me is that is that the characterisation treads similar ground to manipulative Erwin fics from the early days of the fandom.  Again though, that’s just my preference.  There is no right or wrong way to write these characters, and the fact that writers are continually reinventing and exploring Erwin’s character just goes to highlight what a brilliantly complex and compelling character he is. It bodes well for the enduring popularity of the ship and longevity of the fandom.

Sorry this has become a bit of a ramble and I’m not sure if I’ve answered your question.  I guess what I’m trying to say is that we all have our own preferences when it comes to characterisation.  The Eruri fandom has been blessed with so many amazing writers over the years and I’m discovering new authors every day, so if a particular trope, such as Marley Erwin, doesn’t do it for you, there are plenty more to choose from.

1: sexuality headcanon - I was writing gay but I'm not sure if Levi being homosexual is even a headcanon at this point. I used to be in an extremely Dudebro reddit server and even the fucking. Alt-righters. The staunch homophobes. Everyone agreed that there is not one single straight atom in that little man.

2: otp - I really like Zevi but if I have to pick just one, I go with Eruri. Levi is pretty shippable though tbh. I don't think I've ever seen anything I dislike when it comes to his ships. Levi/Miche? Sure why not. Levi/Kenny? ...I mean is that a thing? Cause if it isn't it definitely should be lmao.

3: brotp - Levihan! Despite lots of anime are about friendship and whatnot, not many duos I've seen can top Levihan in terms of people who just really fucking love and respect each other (and the chemistry is through the roof).

4: notp - I know there's going to be people from the backstage who want me to say Ereri but nah, I don't hate it. Surely it's not my favorite ship but you know what, 20 yo Eren who stopped giving a fuck harassing his smol Captain works in my book. I think I'm not into anything in which Levi is a top, though. It just doesn't work with my brain.

5: first headcanon that pops into my head - He's been drinking tea for as far as he remembers because there's no way any Underground dweller can just drink water down there, they need to boil the shit out of it and use whatever they have to give it even the bare minimum of flavor.

6: favorite line from this character - It's got to be "Don't die - survive! ...who am I kidding, they're all going to die like flies..." from Return to Shiganshina, it floors me every time.

7: one way in which I relate to this character - I'm uhhhhh short? I'm still taller than him tho I'm pretty sure lmao

8: thing that gives me second hand embarrassment about this character - The hardcore character assassination Isayama subjected him to when he made him choose Armin over Erwin for the Titan serum. There's only one man, huh. Fuck off Hajime, I hope kids pee in your Onsen.

9: cinnamon roll or problematic fave? - Whoever calls Levi problematic is either under 16 or has read an entirely different manga.

favorite thing about him: his height. i'm not kidding, having such a badass strong male main character be just a Smol Boi is amazing to me, and it's the first time i see it in such a complicated character. not to mention it goes really well with my hc that he's trans, so FUCK YES SHORTY BABY.

least favorite thing about him: his clean freak habits if i absolutely have to pick something?

unpopular opinion: he's a huge bottom. idk if it's really unpopular, but i see sooooo many fics with him being a top and i could see it happening in a certain setting, but that's not my main idea of him, esp not in the beginning of a relationship. i think it would take months for hange (+/- erwin) to make him feel confident enough in his feelings and skin to try it, and i absolutely love to imagine him being so flustered about it first because he's so out of his comfort zone taking the reigns during sex.

favorite thing about him: he's a dreamer, which makes him smart not only in the traditional sense and his strategic abilities, but also in the sense that he's driven by hope and curiosity. he's inquisitive but cautious, he's thirsty for knowledge and driven by it even when he's shaking with fear and that's something i understand, love and admire in any character/person.

least favorite thing about him: he was a bit too whiney in early episodes, which is why it took me a while to like him.

random headcanon: he has a crush on hange! erwin was a mentor and he admired him as a strong and smart leader, but hange is a different kind of smart and i can easily imagine armin falling for their giant brain. i hc that armin spent a lot of time with them in their lab exchanging theories about the world outside, once he overcame his initial fear of how intense they can get. when hange appoints him next commander before their sacrifice, it betrays a deep connection the two of them must have had during the time gap (one more reason to hate it in my love/hate relationship to it btw!), when hange must have been preparing him for the position for years (and i absolutely love to imagine a flustered armin trying to follow hange's train of thoughts and lessons while trying to hide his hearteyes for them hehe)

unpopular opinion: i don't think him and annie fit well together at all. i agree that they had feelings for each other bc it's canon so i can't really argue with it, but i don't see them making it in a healthy relationship in post canon. feel free to send me armin x annie fics to change my mind?

In this blog, there will be visuals / depictions / references / headcanons concerning a romantic bond between Levi Ackerman and Eren Yeager.

I'm the sort of writer who wishes to explore emotions through writing. I'm not here to explore any kinks. All ‘ questionable ’ subjects I write are approached with respect towards said subjects and the people I write with.

I ship and write Levi as romantically involved with a canon-divergent Eren Yeager, portrayed by a certain writer. My take on their relationship is developed through the years, based on other sources of media ( not SNK ), and isn't tied to canon anymore, at any degree.

Their relationship is one of my favorites, their bond one of the most DEEP despite the age gap. They give me the feeling of the war veteran (Levi) who has seen the worst of life and believes to have killed anything kind inside him, to fall for a soldier (Eren) who is passionate and loves in a way Levi has forgotten how ( a vibe similar to Achilles x Patroclus ). They are my favorite ship, and honestly I've been lucky enough not only to find great works to inspire me ( Idea/Rin Seina's works ( most wonderful manga I've read, and also most of the art I use in this blog belongs to them ), The Thin Red Line, etc. ) but also a wonderful Eren writer to write them with.

This doesn't mean I will romanticallyship Levi with any Eren Yeager muses, or anyone from the 104th Training Squad ( the opposite, really, the bond I'm interested to explore is mentor / mentee ). Romance is the least of my concerns when it comes to writing Levi. But this post serves as the warning there will be Ereri depictions / headcanons / references from time to time, but always properly tagged. Knowing this is a disturbing ship to many, I thought it was better for me to properly warn everyone.

note: depictions of Eren with short hair ≠ him being a minor. Many people, including myself, see Eren's longer hair as a sign of his turn toward villainy, and not his age.

First Impression: I literally went "ew, people think he's hot???". I was so confused why people liked this man.

Impression Now: I love this little mean bean so much. He is the one exception to my "I will only like someone if they are taller than me." rule. Season 3 Levi in that slutty grey shirt had me sweating 🥵

Favorite Moment: Kenny fight scene, hands down. Not only is it one of my favorite anime fights ever, Levi is gorgeous the entire fucking time.

Idea for a Story: I want a Levi x reader fic where levi is a secret billionaire, but hasn't told the reader. Like, they keep wondering why levi is able to take them to dinner every week if they are both broke ass college students, but levi is actually from a family of old money.

Unpopular Opinion: This is mostly about who people ship him with. I don't like LevixHange. It feels forced to me, but I know there is canon evidence for the ship too.

Favorite Relationship: Ooooo, I love this question, but I'm going to take it the shipping route. I love a good selfship. I'm a sucker for Eruri, but the AO3 fics for Ereri are soooo good. The Little Titan Cafe by pocketsizedtitan is a comfort fic for me.

Favorite Headcanon: I headcanon that Levi's love language is physical touch, but it also makes him very uncomfortable. He's been fighting his whole life so physical contact was alway in a violent manner, so once he finally falls in love with someone and they touch him he looses his shit a bit.

Jean

First Impression: I didn't hate him. He was fine when I first saw season 1. Honestly, he didn't make too much of an impression on me.

Impression Now: Oh how I love this man. Especially, post timeskip Jean. o m g. I'm dead. Not only is he a great character, but he is also. He's probably one of my favorite characters.

Favorite Moment: The funny moments with Jean always warm my heart, but I also love the moments when he realizes his strength as a leader. It's not really a a specific moment.

Idea for a Story: I'm craving a good slooooow burn jean x reader fic in a college au. I am also down for a domestic high school sweetheart going to university jean x reader fic. I need pain with the second one. I've been reading Respectfully, an Absolute Mess by Ercthesloth and o m g it's the best jean x reader fic i've read so far.

Unpopular Opinion: Post-timeskip jean is superior. fight me 🥵🥵🥵

Favorite Relationship: I'm gonna share my ships. idc. Jean x reader, obvi. I'm a sucker for jearmin and jean x marco.

Okay okay hear me out. What if one of the reasons Levi has so much trouble sleeping is because Kuchel used to cradle him in her arms in order to coax him to sleep - it made him feel safe and loved and when she died Levi was never really able to sleep normally without someone wrapping themselves around him. However, the world is already pretty shit and Levi is resigned to think that in the grand scheme of things not being able to sleep isn’t the worst thing in this world. Enter one bright-eyed titan shifter named Eren Jaeger who somehow, someway is able to grow infuriatingly closer and closer to Levi each passing day. To think that this little shithead is able to weasel his way under Levi’s skin (and sheets) is absolutely unbelievable. But Levi has to admit - it’s the best sleep he has gotten in years.
