The SAG awards came and went. The Oscars were held on April 25. It was a bit of a yawner and why would a show set themselves up for an awkward end?? There was a commercial from P&G right before the broadcast that stated, “ Widen the screen so we can widen our view.” Nice sentiment.  Mank had so many noms and only 2 wins. People looking their best to me were Leslie Odom Jr., Glenn Close, Riz Ahmed, LaKeith Stanfield, Colman Domingo, John Batiste, Mia Neal, Questlove (gold crocs and a mask!), Desmond Roe, Travon Free, Trish Summerville, Marlee Matlin, The Lucas Brothers, Andra Day, Carey Mulligan, Amanda Seyfried, Nicolette Robinson, Regina King and Margot Robbie. Laura Dern looked like Big Bird, there were just too many feathers. Tiara Thomas had feathers but they looked great.  Angela Bassett had some power sleeves and Tyer Perry looked like a little boy.  Hooray for Emerald Fennell for her win for original screenplay but not sure about the dress. And Viola Davis?? Dana Murray?? Ashley Fox?? Hmm?? Winners seemed to have trouble getting to the stage. They often refused the steps or the walkway and sort of climbed up the side. I did love the intimate setting and it did remind me of the old clips of years before. Sound of metal and Ma Rainey both won. Tyler Perry and for the first time, an organization, the motion picture and television fund, took home the humanitarian award. I was thrilled to see My Octopus Teacher win for Doc. I loved Crip Camp too, that was a hard category.  The acting winners went in all directions.  Many critics complained that the films were real downers . Nomadland won best picture. Michael Moore put it best I think. Of the films this year, he said, “They force you to look backward with 2021 eyes.”

Nice Horse is currently touring across Canada and we caught up with them before their show in Kitchener, Ontario on Tuesday, where they were opening for The Washboard Union.

It’s been a while since Boots and Hearts 2017 when we chatted with Nice Horse last and there have been some changes. Most notably there’s been a lineup change on the guitar. Tara McLeod has stepped in for Kaley Debra. Tara brings some serious guitar chops to the band. She’s been shredding since the age of 12 and joined acclaimed metal band Kittie in 2005. Additional credits include studio work with Before the Damned, Shawn Desman, and Fefe Dobson.

We met up in the dressing room at Kitchener’s Centre in the Square but we were fortunate enough to be experiencing a beautiful, warm, late October day, and we took full advantage of it and suggested we head outside for our chat.

We had a few distractions before getting started including a puppy visitor, a fan who spotted us, and asked if he could get a photo with the band. There was a lot of laughter, and we may have even been told by people passing by, that we were having too much fun. We were having a lot of fun.

I started off the official questions by asking about their YouTube video series “Bandsplainin“. If you’re a fan of Nice Horse, you’ll know that in March of this year, they released a super fun video for their song Mansplainin‘. It’s gorgeous and carries a great message. The definition of “mansplain” is: (of a man) explain (something) to someone, typically a woman, in a manner regarded as condescending or patronizing. They took it upon themselves, during the year to turn it around and explain some things to some of our favourite bands.

Nice Horse has bandsplained Paul Brandt, James Barker, Aaron Goodvin, Midland, Clayton Bellamy, Jeff Dalziel, but our favourite bandsplainin’ video may have been Brett Kissel. Take a moment, watch them all. I promise you won’t be disappointed.

I wanted to know if there’d be more bandsplainin’ videos coming and Katie reassured me that there would be. She let us know that bands have been asking to be bandsplained, and we’re very glad to hear it. There was even talk of possibly bandsplainin’ The Washboard Union!

At this point, I switched gears and asked about Coalition Music. Coalition Music mentored the band before to managing them, and they were always available to answer questions. If they didn’t know an answer, they found someone who did. Coalition runs Canada’s Music Incubator. “Canada’s Music Incubator (CMI) is a not-for-profit incubator based in Toronto with a mandate to help artists and artist managers evolve from starter companies into sustainable businesses through hands-on networking, mentoring and collaboration.”

Coalition helped to guide them towards taking the Nice Horse project more seriously, and while they always have a fun horse pun for us, they’re taking this business very seriously. They support all of their artists, but they also expressed that the artists support each other. It’s the story we hear over and over again in Canadian music, it’s like a family.

I managed to sneak a question about Johnson Crook, one of my favourite Toronto bands because I knew they had a relationship. Turns out Nice Horse had a relationship with Johnson Crook before their Coalition days, and one of the first shows Brandi did was with Noel Johnson, before his Johnson Crook days. Brandi talked about being in a band with Krista, and the two of them bringing Noel out on tour. There were some fun stories, but we’re going to make you ask Noel about the PlayStation.

Katie mentioned that she knew Eric at Coalition through Simple Plan. Simple Plan used to record at a recording studio where Katie worked, and Sebastian pointed Katie in Eric’s direction. Simple Plan continues to support Nice Horse through their journey.

Next on my list of “Must Asks” was, “Tell one thing that your fans don’t know about you.”. Tara) “Everything! I have recently admitted to the world that I’m super domestic.” Brandi) “I’m a way more open book. I’m a total tea fanatic and my favourite thing about being off of tour, is going home, and I have my special tea kettle that boils the water to the perfect temperature, and Krista got me this milk frother for Christmas one year, and I dream about going home and making myself the best matcha latte.” Katie) “I can’t think of anything that people don’t know about me, let Krista go first.” After Krista answered, it came out that Katie is petrified of snakes and spiders and for that reasons, she’ll never go to Australia. Krista) “Most of my home decor I purchase during Halloween and the week following. I have little skull shot glasses, little plates with tasteful skeletons on them and Brandi just got me a pillow that has skeletons doing yoga on it.”

I had to ask about new music. Nice Horse has a brand new single out for Six String Outlaw, and they’re calling this one The Sundown Remix. The remix sounds very different, and part of that’s because Tara’s put her own spin on the guitar parts. Have a listen.

Katie also told us that they were just in the studio two weeks ago working on brand new songs and that we expect to hear them in early next year. Hopefully February.



We wrapped up our interview, and Nice Horse got back to preparing for the show. Later that evening they took the stage by storm. Full out energy and enthusiasm. They told us during their set that one of their very first shows was in this venue when they opened for Tom Cochrane. It was good to have them back.

Their set included Six String Outlaw, Jim, Jack, Johnnie & Jose, Tonight and more. They closed out with Pony Up and energized the crowd. They did an amazing job of getting the audience ready for The Washboard Union. As their set ended the ladies behind me asked “What was their name, they were great.” I was happy to tell them.

Nice Horse plays in Red Deer on November 1st with Meghan Patrick, Medicine Hat on November 2nd with Lindsay Ell, followed by four dates with The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and then they’ll finish up the tour with The Washboard Union. Awkwafina 'SNL' Sketches Ranked Worst to First: Kanye Confusion and Kavanaugh Confirmation

Awkwafina is edgy and hilarious in her own stuff, but she seemed mostly toned down throughout her debut appearance on “Saturday Night Live.”

The “Crazy Rich Asians” star came to life the most during a baby shower sketch later in the night, while her first appearance outside of the monologue offered very stiff line deliveries, telling us she got more comfortable as the night progressed.

Impressively, the show tackled the Brett Kavanaugh confirmation vote both in the cold open and during “Weekend Update,” so you know they were hustling to finish writing this show up to the last minute. Sure, it was a safe bet he’d get in, but still it was an impressively fast turnaround, giving them the first comedy response to the news.

They even addressed their own controversy, with Pete Davidson returning to the “Weekend Update” desk to talk about Kanye West’s off-script pro-Trump rant that drew rave reviews from the president (who hadn’t seen it) and looks of discomfort from the cast before they edged off the stage.

As usual, we’re ranking all the sketches from worst to first, including the Cold Open and the regular “Weekend Update” segments. We’ll skip the musical guests, because they’re not usually funny – unless Ashlee Simpson shows up. We wrap up with a look at the cast-member who had the strongest week.

Dance Battle

Okay, this sketch was pretty stupid and we’re still trying to figure out how it was the first sketch of the night after the monologue. Two dance crews come out and compete, only one of them did so with game show themes. The problem was none of the dancing was particularly memorable for being good or bad. Even the addition of Travis Scott as a Mariah Carey backup dancer who apparently only dances with his arms didn’t inject anything into the bland bit. The theme songs were the only joke and it wasn’t funny enough.

MONOLOGUE – Akwkafina

“I was gonna come out dressed like a water bottle, but apparently someone did that last week,” Awkwafina cracked at the top of her monologue, poking fun at her name. She cracked a few jokes about her grandma possibly watching the wrong network tonight and her dad sounding like Trump, and admitted she was more a “Rebuilding My Credit Asian” than a “Crazy Rich Asian.” She then took a moment to credit Lucy Liu’s hosting of “SNL” back in 2000 as a pivotal moment in her young life, redefining what might be possible for an Asian-American woman. Awkwafina’s incredibly dry delivery kept her jokes from hitting quite hard enough; she needed more time to draw you into her approach to see funny the way she does, and she just didn’t have it.

Presidential Alert

This obvious sketch had a cute twist ending that made it fun. The bulk of it was about the kind of nonsense Trump could send through the Presidential Alert system, namely the same kind of things he tweets about only even more inane and pointless. But the twist was that the whole thing was a Cricket Wireless commercial, because their service is so bad you won’t even get the alerts. Suddenly, you might find a reason to want awful service. The whole bit was executed well enough, with good reactions from the cast, but there wasn’t anything fresh at all until that closing moment, which kept it from being a totally lazy sketch.

Cleopatra

What if Cleopatra had modern-day stylists? It turned out as weird as it sounds, with Cecily Strong taking on the Cleopatra role while Awkwafina led a team featuring Kenan Thompson’s Xerxes and Kate McKinnon’s Becky. Yes, it was weird anachronistic moments like that that actually made this work at all. When Xerxes showed her a vase with her picture painted on it, she demanded he delete it, which he did by smashing it to the ground. This was a History Channel special, which added another layer of funny because you can imagine that it’s the network’s fault this is so historically ridiculous. By the end, Cleopatra was bickering with Alex Moffat’s Caesar and it was all a little too twee. But mostly, the sketch had no real punch at the end, which would have been nice.

New York Film Festival

Marion Cotillard (Cecily Strong), Allison Janney (Heidi Gardner) and Sandra Oh (Awkwafina) are joined by Debette Goldry, one of Kate McKinnon’s most ridiculous characters. She wasn’t as outrageous as in previous appearances, but she’s always a fun counterpoint to add levity to discussions about #MeToo and issues of sexual harassment in Hollywood. But without any ridiculously over-the-top stories or antics, the whole sketch fell a little flat.

COLD OPEN – Kavanaugh Confirmation

“SNL” kicked off its night with a wild “locker room”-style post-game interview for the Brett Kavanaugh confirmation, so either they threw this together in a hurry or they anticipated the result. Honestly, it’s probably the latter as it was pretty evident how things were going to go down. The whole thing was fun, though they could have leaned a little more into how awkward and angry Heidi Gardner must have been as the female reporter interviewing the exuberant GOP. Beck Bennett was a lot of fun as Mitch McConnell, complete with prosthetic neck he tried to suck his chin all the way through, but McKinnon still hasn’t quite found her take on Lindsey Graham, even with some of the best lines. “This was for the fans,” McKinnon said of the protesters. “And I know they agree with us because they were all shouting #MeToo!”

So You’re Willing to Date a Magician

This sketch mostly worked, despite the fact Pete Davidson couldn’t get through his lines and both Awkwafina and Leslie Jones broke several times. All four magicians were funny and uniquely different, though Alex Moffat and Heidi Gardner as a brother-sister team who go everywhere together was particularly humorous. We’re not sure what Davidson was supposed to be doing at the end when he crawled over to Awkwafina and popped up, but it was just weird. Was he supposed to do another self-harm gag? As it stood, the ending deflated what would have been one of the night’s strongest character-driven sketches.

The Pumpkin Patch

It’s a good thing this aired late in the night, because it was totally about boning pumpkins. Mikey Day confronted three of his employees at a pumpkin patch after they got caught doing the deed, egged on by Awkwafina, and had to fire them all. It was uncomfortable and funny, but then took a turn to creepy when he left them with a parting gift of a trunk full of pumpkins. Like … ew! But despite our best efforts to believe we were better than this, we did laugh.

Baby Shower

Cecily Strong invited her dog walker Deedee (Awkwafina) to Heidi Gardner’s baby shower because she’s so cool. And she totally had Cecily’s back as the only single one in this group of friends. We loved that Cecily was both put out and so arrogant and cocky, calling herself the cute one in the group. Then Awkwafina wanted to get rid of all the baby stuff to make her feel better … at a baby shower. We’re not sure what her strategy was smacking the balloons around — one hand was holding a slice of pizza — but it was rather pointlessly funny.

Ted Cruz Hype

It was the awkwardness that made this sketch work, with Kenan Thompson and Awkwafina working as an enthusiastic hype team for Ted Cruz (Beck Bennett). Cruz immediately set off feedback in the mic multiple times before breaking it. He even flopped dribbling a basketball and shooting off confetti. The message was clear, there is no way to make him look fun and hip. He even broke his own nose trying to dab. It was short and sweet and kept the laughs coming from top to bottom.

Weekend Update

“50 is the lowest number of votes for a Justice in history, but keep in mind it’s also the most yeses Kavanaugh has ever heard,” Colin Jost said, going for the low-hanging fruit. Again, though, props to “SNL” for being this timely with their content. He then called out Kavanaugh for lying under oath during the interview, saying, “That’s like cheating on your wife during the wedding.” The jokes were sharp and funny, with a brilliant “Law & Order” parody of the proceedings. Then, Michael Che asked if the five GOP women who voted for Kavanaugh were hostages. This is when “SNL” can shine, when it’s bold and biting in its satire and jokes.

Everybody’s favorite bros — at least this version of them — dropped by “Saturday Night Liberals” to talk about their plans for the upcoming midterms. As always, Alex Moffat and Mikey Day absolutely slay in these characters, with Moffat’s Eric a particular delight responding to and reacting to everything day’s Don Jr. says. When Don suggested they could tell jokes, Eric chimed in with, “What did the gay, black, Jew–“

Michael Che had a great callback to the jokes about Trump’s “scary times” for young men in America quote as they moved on to other topics. They poked fun at Starbucks baristas complaining about hypodermic needles (they use them as stirrers at 7-Eleven), gay penguins stealing a baby penguin, and a kid barber. Spoiler alert: they suck.

Finally, “SNL” addressed the elephant in the room, with Pete Davidson reflecting back on Kanye West’s impromptu pro-Trump speech. First up, he said they’d considered having Michael Che do it, “because Che’s black, but I’m crazy and we both know which side of Kanye is at the wheel right now.” He called it one of the most awkward things, “and I’ve seen Chevy Chase talk to an intern.” It was a pretty blistering attack on Kanye’s behavior, with Davidson suggesting that he just take his medicine. “Being mentally ill doesn’t give you permission to be a jackass,” he explained. It was both funny and well reasoned. West deleted his Twitter and Instagram accounts before “SNL” on Saturday, as reported by TMZ, so any response he may have remains unknown … for now.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK

The guys had the strongest night, with Beck Bennett’s Mitch McConnell working really well, and both Mikey Day and Alex Moffat slaying as Don Jr. and Eric Trump on “Weekend Update.” Moffat was also hilarious as half of a brother-sister magician duo and douchey Caesar, while Day played it straight in one of the night’s most uncomfortably funny sketches, “The Pumpkin Patch” and Bennet was funny again as hapless Ted Cruz.

But we have to give the edge to Moffat for his clueless Eric Trump. This week, he was terrified by Day’s exploding fist, and the way he kept eying it after only added to the conviction of his performance in the role. Then, his interactions with the puppet were just perfect. This is one of the funniest impressions in the history of the show, and Moffat always nails it.

Firefighter Dies as Blaze Erupts at NYC Ed Norton Film Shoot

A massive fire that sent flames leaping from a New York City apartment building where a star-studded movie was being shot has killed an FDNY firefighter, according to witnesses and officials.

Michael R. Davidson, 37, died from his injuries while battling the fire on St. Nicholas Avenue in Harlem, the FDNY said at a press briefing around 3:30 Friday morning. Firefighter Davidson, a 15-year vet with the FDNY, is the 1,150 firefighter to die in the line of duty in FDNY history, according to Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro.

"This is an awful night," Eric Phillips, Mayor de Blasio's press secretary, tweeted. "We’ve lost an NYC firefighter."

Officials said two other firefighters suffered serious burns in the blaze that broke out Thursday in the basement of the building around 11 p.m., the FDNY said. Those injured firefighters are being treated at an area hospital's burn center. Three other civilians suffered minor injuries.

Firefighter Davidson was the nozzleman of the first engine 69, the first to arrive at the fiery scene. 

They rushed to the basement, but the FDNY said once they got down there, the fire got worse, forcing them to retreat out of the building. Nigro said Davidson somehow got separated from his group and officials quickly began to search for him. 

When firefighters found him, he was unconscious, the FDNY said at the press conference. Davidson was unable to be revived and died. 

Davidson leaves behind his wife and four young children. He comes from a long line of firefighters. His father, Robert, who is now retired worked in the same firehouse as Davidson. His brother, Eric, works at Engine 88 in the Bronx, Nigro said. 

The blaze broke out on the set of "Motherless Brooklyn," which, according to IMDB, is being directed by Ed Norton and stars Bruce Willis, Willem Dafoe, Alec Baldwin, Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Leslie Mann.

An NBC 4 New York photographer spoke to one of the actors, who said they had just finished filming for the day when they smelled smoke while they were breaking down.

The St. Nicholas Avenue building where the fire started is the old St. Nick’s Pub, according to a witness who lives nearby. The witness also tell News 4 New York that the movie shoot has been going on at the building for the past few weeks.  

The crime and drama film, which is set to be released next year, is about a lonely detective afflicted with Tourette syndrome, working to solve the murder of his only friend, according to IMDB. The movie is set in 1950 and is based on a novel by Jonathan Lethem. 

The FDNY tweeted the 5-alarm fire was under control around 2:30 a.m. Friday, more than three hours after it was reported. It’s not clear what may have sparked the blaze.

How to Master Photography

To start, I don’t consider myself a master. But, I have mastered myself, and I have mastered photography for myself.

1. Shoot yourself!

I’ve studied the masters of photography for a long time, and there is no formula.

All wisdom in photography:

Know Yourself.

Or a better way to think:

Shoot Yourself!

That means, know who you are as a person. Know your personal preferences. Know what you like to shoot and what you don’t like to shoot.

For me, I know:

I like to photograph human beings.

I know my life is limited, therefore I will only focus on photographing personally-meaningful moments to me.

I see myself as a street sociologist. I shoot street photography to understand cities, urban architecture, human interactions, and to document the human soul.

What are your preferences in photography? Why do you shoot photos? This is the first step to self-knowledge in photography.

2. Master your tools

The two cameras I have mastered is the Leica and Ricoh GR.

Why master a camera? You don’t think before shooting. You shoot from the gut, and you focus on composition, emotion, and soul.

Stick with one camera, one lens for at least a year. Then when you are ready to graduate and move on, then pick up a new camera system.

Don’t move onto a new camera setup, until you’ve mastered the gear you (already) have.

3. Exploit your opportunities

We are all given decisive moments in life. It is our power to seize those opportunities, or not.

In photography, it is rare you see a good moment. You can’t control that.

But, you can control how many photos you shoot of a scene. You can control how hard to “work a scene.” To learn more, study CONTACT SHEETS.

The best way to understand how to make better photos: learn how to NOT waste good photo opportunities.

Work the scene by:

Shooting both horizontal and verticals of the scene.

Trying to shoot as many photos as possible: I try to shoot 30, 40, 50 photos of a scene if possible.

25% principle: When in doubt, shoot 25% more than you think you should.

My favorite photo book: MAGNUM CONTACT SHEETS. To debunk the myth that great photographers only get the shot in one photo.

4. Copy the masters, then kill them.

Learn from the masters of photography and copy them. But once you’re done with your apprenticeship, kill them.

Whoever says they have never been influenced or inspired by other photographers or artists are talking bullshit. Even Henri Cartier-Bresson was inspired by his masters, like Matisse, and a lot of other surrealists during his time.

Pro tip: to find better sources of inspiration, study who YOUR masters studied under.

Who did Picasso copy and study? Who did Leonardo da Vinci find inspiration from? Who did Steve Jobs look up to?

All art ultimately imitates nature (study FRACTALS).

My suggestion:

Find inspiration from the masters, and collect data, information, techniques, style, and mood. Then when you have collected enough pollen of inspiration, create your own unique honey.

Blatantly steal from others, but give credit where credit is due.

Aim to be GOOD, not original. (Bauhaus concept)

5. Never stop shooting or publishing

If you’re not growing, you’re dying.

Never stop learning from all of art. Never be satisfied. Seek more artistic wisdom, ideas, and power. Steal liberally, but REMIX the art you consume.

Study Bauhaus, Cubism, Renaissance art, modern architecture (Frank Lloyd Wright), and other geniuses who married the humanities with technology. Good books to study: Einstein, and Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson.

Find inspiration from those who dream big. Walt Disney, Elon Musk, Howard Hughes, all the great titans.

No boundaries, no limits. Only mental, intellectual, physical, and artistic growth.
