♫ The House Of The Rising Sun ♫ (Redux)
This makes the fourth time I’ve played this one here, but it remains a popular one, and it’s been nearly two years, so … here we go again!  This one’s for you, rawgod! According to Wikipedia … Like many classic folk ballads, ‘The House of the Rising Sun’ is of uncertain authorship. Musicologists say that it is based on the tradition of broadside ballads, and thematically it has some resemblance…

On October 8th 2012 Edinburgh born, Captain Eric Lomax died aged 93.
A remarkable man Eric's story is told in the brilliant film The Railway Man if you haven't seen it look it up. Eric joined the Royal Corps of Signals at the age of 19 in 1939, right before the start of the war. In 1942, he was stationed as a lieutenant in Singapore when the Japanese took over the country, capturing him and many other Allied soldiers. As a prisoner of war, Eric was forced to march to Changi Prison, where the number of prisoners exceeded the maximum capacity of the prison. The prisoners were divided and sent to smaller camps, and Eric was sent to a camp in Thailand.
Along with many other prisoners, Eric was forced to build the Burma Railway, which ran from Bangkok, Thailand to Rangoon, Burma (now Myanmar). The conditions in which the prisoners were forced to work were horrific, and malnutrition and mistreatment were widespread. While he was working on the Death Railway, as it was known, Eric was subject to severe torture, which psychologically haunted him years and years after the war ended.
After the war ended, Eric returned to Britain and was awarded the Efficiency Medal, as well as receiving the honorary rank of captain before retiring in 1949 from the army. Eric found it difficult to adjust to civilian life due to the psychological damage that he suffered during his years of imprisonment, and he joined the Colonial Service and served in Ghana until 1955.
Later on, Eric sought treatment for his psychological trauma and travelled to Thailand to face one of his cruellest torturers, a Japanese interpreter named Takashi Nagase. Eric wanted to bring closure to his tragic past that continued to haunt him, and when he discovered that Takashi spent his life trying to make amends for his war actions, he found that closure he was looking for.
Lomax's story was made into the BBC television drama Prisoners in Time in 1995, starring John Hurt as Lomax, a film adaptation was released in 2013. and stars Colin Firth.
Eric Lomax died on this day 2012 in Berwick upon Tweed.

For most people, House of the Rising Sun evokes memories of the 1964 hit The Animals. The song itself, however, has a hidden and shockingly extensive history that began much earlier than the mid-1960s.
Tumblr media
The melody itself is a traditional English ballad, but it has become popular as an African American folk song. It was recorded by Texas Alexander in the 1920s, then by a number of other performers, including Ledbelly, Woody Guthrie, Josh White and later Nina Simone.
But it was Nina's version that The Animals heard.
No one can claim the rights to the song, which means that it can be recorded and sold without royalties. But many bands made covers of it after it became a hit with The Animals.
Tumblr media
Historians have not been able to definitively identify what the "House of the Rising Sun" is, but here are two of the most popular theories:
Tumblr media
1.This song is about a brothel in New Orleans. The House Of The Rising Sun was named after its owner, Madame Marianne Le Soleil Levant (which means "Rising Sun" in French). The brothel operated from 1862 to 1874, and then closed due to complaints from neighbors.
Tumblr media
2.We are talking about a women's prison in New Orleans called the Orleans Parish Women's Prison, the entrance gates of which were decorated with paintings of the rising sun. This could explain the phrase from the song "ball and chain".
Ethnomusicologist Alan Lomax recorded his version of the song in 1937 with a 16-year-old girl named Georgia Turner. In this context, the song is sung in the first person in the present tense, when the singer laments how the House of the Rising Sun destroyed her life. In this traditional folk version, the main character is either a prostitute or a prisoner. The Animals changed the character to a gambling enthusiast to make their version more suitable for radio.
Tumblr media
In 1964, this folk song became a worldwide hit for The Animals. Their version reached number one in the UK on July 9, and in America on September 5.
Animals vocalist Eric Burdon explained in a 2010 interview for Songfacts:
House of the Rising Sun is a song that I was just destined to perform. She was made for me, and I was made for her. It was a great song to tour with Chuck Berry because it became a way to reach the audience without copying Chuck Berry himself. It was a great trick, and it worked. In fact, not only a trick, but also a great record.
Tumblr media
Bob Dylan included this song on his first album in 1962 with a folk arrangement like that of American folk singer Dave Van Ronk. When The Animals recorded it two years later, it transformed Dylan. The musician realized that he could apply a rock rhythm to a folk song. Bob bought an electric guitar and started playing it, which made him famous at the Newport Folk Festival in 1965, where he performed an electric set for the first time.
Tumblr media
The Animals recorded the song in the studio in just one take, as they honed it by constantly performing on tour. John Steele, the band's drummer, recalled this.:
On May 17, 1964, we played in Liverpool, and then went to London, where Mickey Most booked a studio for the ITV show Ready Steady Go! Because of the reaction we got to Rising Sun, we asked to record this song as well, to which he said, "OK, we'll do it in the same session." We tuned in, played a few bars for the sound engineer – it was mono without overdubs – and recorded it only once. After listening, Mickey said: "That's it, it's a finished single." The sound engineer said that the song came out too long, but instead of shortening it a little, Mickey plucked up the courage and said, "Now we live in a microgrove world, we'll release it." A few weeks later, the song became No. 1 worldwide. When we knocked the Beatles off the top in America, they sent us a telegram that read: "Congratulations from The Beatles (band)."
Producer Mickey Most added:
Everything was in the right place, the planets were in the right place, the stars were in the right place, and the wind was blowing in the right direction. It took only 15 minutes to record, so I can't take much credit for producing it. It was just an incident that captured the atmosphere in the studio.

Recently unearthed video, produced for German TV in 1968. Lomax was an old Liverpool friend of The Beatles, and George Harrison wrote this song for him. The backing band: Guitar: George, Eric Clapton Bass: Paul Drums: Ringo In other words, about as close to a Beatles record as you can get without it officially being The Beatles.

During the mid-to-late 1970s, Rundgren regularly played the eye-catching psychedelicGibson SG (known variously as "Sunny" or "The Fool"), which Eric Clapton had played in Cream. After he had stopped using it ca. 1968, Clapton gave the guitar to George Harrison, who subsequently 'loaned' it to British singer Jackie Lomax. In 1972, after meeting at a recording session, Lomax sold the guitar to Rundgren for $500 with an option to buy it back, which he never took up.[140] Rundgren played it extensively during the early years of Utopia before retiring the instrument for a short time in the mid to late 1970s, which in that time he had the guitar restored having a lacquer finish applied to protect the paint and replaced the tailpiece and bridge to stabilize tuning, bringing the guitar back out on tour during the 1980 Deface the Music tour and using it on and off throughout the 1980s until 1993 when he permanently retired the guitar, eventually auctioning it off in 1999; he now uses a reproduction given to him in 1988 by a Japanese fan.

Air Raid Shelters, Princes Street, 1939.
This evocative description of the first air raid warning in Edinburgh is from The Railway Man by Eric Lomax:
‘At 11.00 am on 3rd September, we heard Arthur Neville Chamberlain say in his exquisite reedy voice that we were now at war with Germany. Fifteen minutes later, the air raid sirens sounded throughout Edinburgh. On Princes Street, the trams came to a standstill; every motor vehicle stopped where it was. Passengers walked with a swift nervous urgency, making for the air raid shelters in Princes Street Gardens. Within minutes the streets were deserted except for the immobilized vehicles, some with their doors open, stretching away down Princes Street. A hand had swept over the city, stopping its heart; the war came in silence.‘

The last Memphis player to wear No.10 was Damion Baugh, who transferred to TCU after the 2020-21 season. Lomax joins a long list of notable Tigers to wear No.10, including Andre Turner, Jeremiah Martin, Rodney Carney, Tarik Black, Alvin Wright and Otis Jackson. He landed on the ground in the last minute of the NIT Championship game against Mississippi State. The former East High star missed eight straight games at the end of last season after sustaining an ankle injury. In three seasons at Memphis, Lomax played 85 games (19 starts) and averaged 5.9 points, 3.5 assists and 1.4 steals per game. Charmaine (inset at the 2013 movie premiere), her sister, and mother were left out of the film. The real Eric Lomax with his daughter Charmaine in the late 1960s. Upon his return, he ended up staying with his fiancée Nan and her parents, a living situation that likely hastened their impending nuptials. In researching The Railway Man true story, we learned that not only did Eric Lomax have to deal with his physical and emotional scars from the war, he also had to face the reality that while he was a prisoner of war, his mother had died and his father had remarried, leaving Eric without a place to call home. What did Eric do when he came home from the war? Eric and Patti were "both living rootless and not altogether happy lives." Patti had three sons of her own, Graeme, Nicholas and Mark, and she also had a daughter. She had grown up in England where she became a nurse, but she moved to Canada after marrying her first husband who was part of the Canadian air force. In his book, Eric states that Patti, portrayed by Nicole Kidman in the movie, had been in a marriage that was as reduced as his own. Dad had made life very tough for her: Mum deserved better." -The Guardian "It was hard," says daughter Charmaine, "but we wanted to concentrate on our mum. Soon after, Eric officially ended his marriage with Nan and married Patti in 1983. A fondness for one another developed and in 1982, Patti left Canada for the United Kingdom, her place of birth. While riding on a train to Glasgow in 1980, the real Eric Lomax met the then 43-year-old Canadian nurse Patricia "Patti" Wallace, who was seventeen years his junior and back in Britain visiting her mother, sister and some close friends. In his 1995 book, Eric refers to Nan merely as "S." He left her in 1981. (born June 18, 1948, died at birth), and Charmaine Carole Lomax (born June 17, 1957). After the war, they were together for 37 years and shared three children: Linda May Lomax (born December 14, 1946, died December 13, 1993), Eric Lomax Jr. Following his capture by the Japanese after the fall of Singapore in 1942, Nan waited for three-and-a-half years not knowing whether he was alive or dead. Eric and Nan got engaged the night before he left. He had been courting her in their native Edinburgh prior to leaving for the war in 1941. Completely absent from The Railway Man movie are Eric Lomax's first wife Agnes ("Nan"), whom he married on November 20, 1945, just three weeks after he was liberated.
